Called Bernard's Honest Sweep after the recommendation of many of my neighbors. Bernard was busy so we had to wait a couple of weeks for our appointment but it was well worth the wait. His fee was very reasonable and he did a thorough job. We even had a couple of cracks in the mortar that we were going to ask him about and he patched them as part of his sweep before we even had to ask. We also thought we needed a cap put on but he told us there was already a screen in place an that the cap wasn't necessary. Top notch! I got his name recommended to me by a retired plumber who used Bernard for his jobs (not everyone wants to get up on a ladder!). I just had new furnace put in, they exhaust directly out, no longer up the chimney, so my HVAC guy told me I should put a liner in for my hot water heater exhaust, to eliminate moisture in my chimney (which can really cause expensive chimney and brick repairs). I told Bernard over the phone what I wanted, he questioned me on a couple things, he gave me a quote and I hired him for the job! He provided me with a few dates, I selected a Saturday am, and he said he would be here between 8:30-9am, he arrived at 8:25. He walked me through what he was going to do, had all the parts out for me to see and outline how each provided me with my protection. I used this company to do a chimney inspection before buying a house. We identified a leak while snow was melting into the chimney. This was a concern and I told my lawyer that this would prevent me from closing if it turned out to be a big repair. After having them do a sweep and an inspection I received this as a result of the inspection: "Everything looks to be in good working condition and I did not see any areas where water can leak in" Satisfied I closed on the house. For a few months we didn't receive heavy rain so I didn't notice any issues, but slowly over the next few month the leak was occurring and increasing in severity. Fed up after several months of the leak increasing in frequency, I finally had two different experts confirm independently that I needed a chase cover. They also both independently confirmed that this was not a new problem and had existed for a significant amount of time. Given that I noticed a leak and two experts independently verified the same cause, it can be concluded that this issue was there when I used this companies services. I spoke to a lawyer and I basically just had to eat the 1-1.5k dollar cost to repair the leak as I didn't have any recourse otherwise. Hopefully this review acts as a warning and saves someone money in the future. read more

Previous owners put an incorrect chimney cap which was blocking the flue. I've never had a fireplace before... thought I understood the basics, but I couldn't get it to work. We recently purchased a new home and we had a Level 2 inspection done on our fireplace chimney and our heating chimney. The inspector told us that, essentially, we needed to do a bunch of work including replacing liners in both chimneys. We called Bernard who was very gracious and accommodating from the start. Bernard came over on a Saturday morning (everyone else we had called could not give us an exact time as to when they would be able to come over and they could not come over on weekends). He inspected both chimneys and told us there was nothing wring with either of them and that, as much as he would like our business he could not in good conscience advise that anything was wrong and that we should spend the money on our children.
