We had a berry great time strawberry picking! Although the farm was a bit small and slightly crowded, the atmosphere was very friendly and welcoming. Our toddler had a blast--definitely a highlight for her! We were pleasantly surprised that they didn't even charge us for the blueberries. Such a lovely vibe overall. We spent about 30-40 minutes and enjoyed every bit of it. Highly recommend for a fun, family-friendly outing!

My son enjoyed plucking fruits and veggies from this farm. Highly recommend!

It's a beautiful farm and very kids friendly. My toddler and the family enjoyed spending time here plucking fruits and veggies. Highly recommend.

The cool place to pick organic berries and take them home. This year the strawberries cost $5 per lb. At first I thought there were too many people for just a few fields with strawberries but further in the garden there were more of them. The owners are the nicest people. I also were able to buy the farmers eggs, jam and honey.

Great place for family/kids strawberry picking! Opened only Saturdays 9-1. Check their website on thursday/Friday to see what's available on Saturday for picking. Our family of 4 went today and it was great. Only small or big strawberries for picking today. Which was fine, out first time going. They had produce on sale: beets, artichokes, and fresh made salsa. Of course I grab one! I'm a sucker for chips and fresh salsa. Each box of strawberries were $5. Stop by the barn for other goodies. We picked up 2 jars of jelly, honey, and hairclips for my daughter. Parking is free. So don't have to worry about that. Cash only!!

A short and quick visit to the farm last Saturday for strawberry picking, and it was great! We arrived at 9am, exactly when it says they open, and we were shocked to see at least 20 cars before us, people already walking into the farm to pick. So yea, definitely come early, aka, by 9am before the crowd comes in. It was our very first time, so we didn't really know what to expect. Experienced it with our toddler, and it was pretty fun to find every red strawberry hiding here and there. I saw people tasting/munching on them here and there while picking, and after confirming that it was allowed, tasted a couple and they were indeed nice and sweet! Price was $5 per lb, and people definitely picked/bought a lot! I saw people buying boxes and boxes of them. (Plastic boxes were provided at the entry). It was a good experience! We'll be back another time.

This is our third year visiting Berry Island Farms. It produces the best strawberries I've ever tasted. They can go quite fast, so I recommend arriving at 9:00 to get the best pickings. Don't underestimate the small strawberries. They are packed with a lot of natural fruit sugar for their small size. Berry Island also has blackberries, tomatoes, peppers and other vegetables depending on season or availability. You can pay with cash. Card is accepted if absolutely necessary. They also take electronic pay options (shhh it's a secret).

What a fantastic place! We had a field trip to Berry Island and we've learnt a lot about organic farming! Ronald is amazing, the place is beautiful and the strawberries are out of this world delicious! Best U-pick place we've been in the whole Bay Area.

Berry Island Farms is a great place for fruitpicking throughout the year! Right now, they have blackberries, boysenberries, raspberries, and strawberries, as well as green bell peppers and shishito peppers. There's no entrance fee, and berries are $5 per pound (cash only). They also have a great selection of local jams and honey, so definitely check those out too!

Online Catalog offered 30 varieties to choose from for $10 a plant. However on the day, they offered 47 tomato varieties (see pic) The Local Makers Market event also had local owned business booths, from a flower van, champagne, crafts, olive oil booth, salsa booth, bath products like lotions and potions and likely a dozen more I can't recall. A food truck called "Pupusa Lady" and of course I ordered 2 empanadas. Delicious ! Parking was easy as one actually parks on the main road. Not sure if there was other parking. All in all, it was a warm breezy day and amazed how many ppl were buying these starter tomato plants. Even the owner was in the midst talking to customers. So glad they accepted plastic. Process was super easy as one finds the vanities, grab the pot (and free cardboard box, if needed), then walk to "cashier" table and pay. I bought 4 varieties : Brandywine, Nepal, Martha Washington and Tasmanian Chocolate. Tip: During the tomato season, This farm offers an honesty cart where they leave their beautiful tomatoes of the season on a cart outside and one pays based on prices and place payment in a lock box or similar. I haven't experienced that YET as tomato season is not yet here. But once summer arrives and on my way to the Gilroy Outlets, I'll be sure to buy fresh in season tomatoes.

Braeburn Fuji Gala…read moreGolden Delicious Granny Smith Gravenstein McIntosh Pink Pearl Pippin Red Delicious Why exactly am I naming these apple varieties you ask? Prior to my visit to the Hillview Farm these were the only 10 varieties of apples I could name if someone were to ask. For somebody like me who eats more apple pie and drinks more apple juice than I do eating fresh apples I thought 10 was pretty impressive. Then I met Joe Stabile. Joe and his wife own an 18 acre apple orchard in Watsonville. When they bought the property in the early 1980's 4 varieties of apples were grown at this 450 tree orchard. Joe and his wife now have over 200 varieties of apples on this orchard and nearly 4200 trees! Yup, shows you how little I know about apples! For the Stabiles it's all about custom grafting and creating new varieties of apples. Many of the varieties found in the Hillview Farm orchard are not found anywhere else. Joe, a former IBM engineer who retired in 1992 to become a full time farmer, is a man of great patience. He loves the art of taking different types of apple trees, grafting the branches together and playing the waiting game on how successful the graft will be. Some grafts take years to develop. That doesn't faze Joe though; no matter how long it takes the bottom line is that the apple has to taste good. Overall taste is the deciding factor in deciding whether a custom graft is successful or not. For our recent farm tour the Stabiles went all out and pre-picked three big baskets of delicious Gravensteins, sweet Sansas and tart Pink Pearls for our group to enjoy. Judging by how quickly the fruit in the basket disappeared I'd have to agree with my fellow farm visitors that the Pink Pearls were our favorites for its beautiful color and delicious taste. Joe showed us the heavy machinery that sorts his apples by size. Then he showed us his juicer and talked about his juicing techniques. Joe and his small staff presses 80 to 100 gallons of juice per day. He bottles the juices immediately and stores the fresh pressed, unfiltered juices and juice blends in freezers then sells the product in assorted sizes at local farmers markets. Joe also sells dried apples at the farmers markets. He uses an industrial sized dehydrator and gave us delicious samples of both the Golden Delicious and Fuji varieties to sample. Our group was already in apple heaven when we stepped out into his orchard to look at the fresh fruit trees and examine some of the grafting techniques used. In addition to apples the Stabiles harvest dozens of varieties of pears, plums and persimmons plus other tree grown fruits. The different sizes, shapes and colors of the apples in the Hillview orchard were mind-boggling. I took tons of photos but after awhile they all started to look the same to me. The Stabiles didn't seem to have that problem though. They knew exactly which variety was which and even gave us data on the fruit's characteristics when we asked. True apple geniuses those Stabiles are. After our tour we gave the family some business too buying up fresh pressed apple juice, and homemade apple products such as preserves, syrups, dressings and butters. Hillview Farm products are sold at three local farmers markets. They are at the Vallco Farmers Market in Cupertino on Fridays, the Danville Farmers Market on Saturdays and the Jack London Square Farmers Market in Oakland on Sundays.
