I tried Berthas again last week and got okra soup, collards and fried whiting. All of which was delicious and pleasantly plentiful. I've not been here in a number of years, but the rich and flavorful food is consistently delicious. I need to try their bread pudding next time!

Had our first lunch there today. Amazing home food. We shared fried chicken and five sides. ALL OF IT was incredible. Well spent $150 on dinner downtown tonight, and I'll be shocked if it's better. They were SUPER enjoyable to talk to as well. We'll be back next time we're in town!

This was a whole experience. We were in Charleston Saturday night through Wednesday afternoon and Bertha's is only open Wednesday through Saturday til 5pm. So we took an Uber there on our way to the airport, luggage and backpacks and all. The line was to the door. Most people get their food to go but there are a handful of tables in the dining room. We parked ourselves and our bags at one by the front wall and settled in for our fried porkchops and fried chicken, lima beans, cabbage, red rice, mac and cheese, and corn bread. And while we waited for our food, one of the kitchen staff walked around passing out free frozen punch. It was good! This was the perfect choice for our last meal in Charleston. We were in and out in 45 minutes, full and satisfied. The only thing is we are still confused about pricing. We think there was an error because somehow we paid $29 for one meal and $19 for the other. Can't be right...but we didn't have time to sort all that out. Pay it forward.

If you want authentic then you gotta get up in it! Bertha's is the soul food spot for you to make a stop. I came straight from the airport. A short drive. The outside is unassuming but the inside is booming! The line was backed up to the door. The sweet tea was SWEET!!! A bit too sweet for me but when in South Carolina... drink sweet tea. The red rice is also a staple of South Carolina. So get it. It was good and they give a big portion. The fried fish was on point. It was 3 big pieces. The Mac and cheese was very good as was the corn bread. Although there were a lot of people, the food was served in a timely manner. When the locals are waiting in line then that's enough data for me!

Best food I've ever had at a food truck. B's Soul Creations, Breakfast and Brunch. Good service and great food. I will definitely go back the next time I'm in town.

I was visiting from out of state. I had a carry out, I enjoyed my food. Most people carry out their food. It is a small place.

The food was tasty and fresh! I enjoyed every morsel of my meal. Loved it! I also ordered a fried stuffed crab! Out of this world! Seasoned to perfection and the ambiance in the restaurant very friendly and made to feel like you were eating at home! Thank you for the experience!

Ahhh I will dream of this fried chicken every day until I have it again. The 5 stars is 100% for the food. I visited Charleston and looked up where to get fried chicken and came across this place. It did not disappoint. Highly recommend coming here! This is definitely a no frills place - hole in the wall, dust in every nook & cranny, questionable levels of stickiness on the tables.... But the 5 stars is solely for the food. Came for lunch on the weekend and anticipated a very long line of tourists, but the line was short and it seemed to all be locals (which is always a great sign!) You order at the front. There's a few tables upstairs & downstairs. The fried chicken was soooo succulent and savory and flavorful. And it's MASSIVE. Skin was super crispy too. The sides were all good. Side portions are fairly small, but the chicken is massive & meal comes with cornbread so you will leave full. For sides I got: yams, mac and cheese, green beans, & corn. Enjoyed all but my favorite were the yams & mac and cheese. We also got the red rice which was delicious. We also tried the fried pork chop with gravy. Sooo flavorful. Recommend all of it!

Tried Bertha's Kitchen and loved it! I had collards, white rice, macaroni & cheese, and cornbread. The mac & cheese was cheesy and delicious, and the collards were seasoned to perfection. Everything tasted like real soul food, and the wait wasn't long at all. Definitely worth the visit!

I ordered the 1/2 honey fried chicken w/ mac & cheese and collard greens. For dessert, we shared pecan pie. The chicken was moist & delicious from being brined and seasoning in the batter. The batter was crunchy, and perfectly applied so you didn't bite into a hunk of just batter. Likewise, the sides were some of the best I had during my trip to SC. Lastly, the pecan pie was really good also. However, I was expecting a bigger & taller slice. Regarding the ambiance, its smart casual here. The decor is fancier vs the down home cooking. Danielle took very good care of us. She was friendly & attentive. Florence's did the trick for us. We had eaten a lot of raw seafood and BBQ. This Lowcountry cuisine gave us a nice change of pace during our trip.

My friend said the tomato pie was really good but it's all cheese and tomatoes. The fried green tomatoes were crispy but needed seasoning. They were incredibly bland. For the main dish she ordered the smash burger and I ordered the fish and grits. She took one bite of the smash burger and sent it back saying it tasted like a frozen burger you'd get at Walmart. The fish and grits were ok. They too were bland and needed salt. A LOT of salt or any other seasoning. The okra, Lima beans and corn that come in this dish also tasted like it came out of a frozen bag. There is no seasoning in this dish whatsoever. Unfortunately this place was a miss and we won't be returning. Also the bathrooms look like a porta potty. You know the cheap plastic that porta potties are made out of? Yeah that's what the stalls are made out of. It looks so cheap and a big contrast from the rest of the restaurant. The staff was nice but they also look like they hate working here.

One of the oldest in Charleston and super cute from the outside in. I also love that they named the place after their loyal pupper dog. It was Labor Day and things seemed on the quiet side in town. The ambience was great and we were on the second floor. We got right to the libations (he had a Malbec and I, the cider they had available). And then the entrees - hubby got the shrimp and grits, that's usually my dish but I was glad he got it so I could taste. I got the fried chicken, with hoppin John over white rice, and collards. So good! And I wasn't even hungry but I had to test the "award winning" and "famous" labels on our dishes. The chicken is a huge serving - 4 pieces of juicy, tasty chicken - an entire quarter. The hoppin John was good - I just wish there were more hoppin John and less rice. Service was 5 star. Donte was a real treat and looked after us well. For dessert, I was hoping for bread pudding, but it wasn't on the menu, and everyone in the dining room was ordering the banana pudding so we got that to share. It is a large serving, enough for two. The presentation was cute, the taste was regular, and I didn't taste a hint of alcohol (it was a bourbon or some other alcohol).

Also, this place is huge so they were able to accommodate my friend's post-wedding party (about 20 people) at the last minute and we had a blast. Everywhere else we tried to go either didn't have the space for us or were closing so it totally made our night! We just made sure to call ahead to check and they were more than happy to have us - the bride was happy so you know it was good :) Bottom line, the Peacock is a local gem hidden in plain sight on East Bay and, as a local, it's become one of my top go-to's in Charleston. The roof was closed so we weren't able to check out that. The staff was friendly albeit a bit out of it for being as dead as they were.
