Pork Chop meal. Red rice, fried okra, cornbread.
    Jeff R.

Tried Shugs today and was not disappointed. I ordered the pork chop, red rice, and fried okra. The meal came with cornbread as well. Along with my meal I ordered a fried chicken thigh. The pork chop was fried well and juicy. Red rice had good spice and was very good. Fried okra was seasoned well. The fried chicken was okay. It was very salty and fried hard. I was hoping to have a good fried chicken but oh well. I gave it a go. We will go back because most of the food was good. The dining room was small and really run down. Service was okay considering it was busy. Hopefully they will get a bigger place which is also more updated.

Lovely mom and pop restaurant w friendly workers and tasty food. Quaint atmosphere with tv's along busy Central Ave. The food was delicious and served hot. The portion size and price are very reasonable! I'll definitely return.

    Garlic Fried Crabs

This restaurant is truly a gem! You feel welcomed from the moment you walk in the door. The ambience is warm, inviting, and beautifully done, and the hostess -Roxanne and owner -Noah, make you feel welcomed the moment you walk in. Let's not forget about the cooks, talented, warm and friendly. This is our first and last stop where ever we are in town. The music sets the perfect vibe, just the right mix to make the experience even better. The food, though, is the real star. Absolutely phenomenal! My husband had the garlic butter crabs that are out of this world, perfectly seasoned, tender, and literally melting in your mouth. Everything is cooked with care and rich flavor, and you can tell they take pride in every dish. And let me just say, Sunday dinner is unmatched. I had turkey wings, macaroni and cheese, collard greens topped off with their buttery bread pudding, chef's kiss! Large servings of comforting, delicious home-cooked soul. Highly recommend this place delivers an unforgettable dining experience every time. Thanks Noah and Roxanne!!!

The facility was clean and well stocked. The quality of food is not worth the crowding or wait time that so many are subjected. As a single person party, I chose to find a seat at the bar. It was not overly large and was monitored by 2 servers. I was fairly quickly addressed to get my drink and I ordered a starter without prompting due to the number of patrons. Another sat beside me but she was overlooked for quite a bit of time, finally having to ask for a menu. Once my starter arrived, the okra basket, I was ignored. The okra was ok but nothing special, standard premade restaurant supply brand of thickish breading that was intermittently soft or crunchy. I was 1/4 way through the basket before I had a chance to request cutlery and seeing that the servers had started to focus only on the person next to me that they had initially overlooked, I also requested my entree. I had reviewed the menu prior to arrival and decided on my order in advanced. Unfortunately it was not available on the brunch menu and lunch was not an available option. I should have asked for the check at that time but selected an omelette instead. While waiting and consuming my starter, I requested a menu draft to be told it was unavailable too. The suggested alternative was decent. My entree arrived about 20 minutes later. It was dry, both the eggs and protein. I was able to request and receive a sauce in a short period of time. My refill did not need to be requested but it was incorrect so I did have to ask for another. I know the staff is most likely good, the popularity produced by the Travel Channel keeps them too busy and complacency is prevalent. I had hoped that the publicity did not change the uniqueness of the menu but I will trust my intuition in the future and continue to avoid these types of restaurants.

This time they were very dry and overly seasoned with pepper. The cole slaw had big chunks of cabbage in it. The bisquit, that I normally love, tasted off. Ordered a piece of carrot cake to go. It was awful - definately not cream cheese icing. Cake was very bland. Not our favorite place to eat anymore!

We both absolutely loved our meals! She said it was one of the best things she's ever eaten in her life. Mine was really good too. The Mac and cheese is very much southern style. Both dishes did not skimp out on the meat. The crawfish in mine was really flavorful. The sausage in both dishes was great as well. Really a standout meal here and compared favorably to what I have had in New Orleans. Our server was super friendly and personable (I tossed the receipt and forgot her name unfortunately) and good came out fast and was presented nicely. Atmosphere was fun, there was a karaoke contest with prizes going on. Beignets for dessert were perfect. Overall price was slightly steep but given the quality I don't mind at all. J.Ja

Lovely waiter suggested I get it as I don't drink....LOVED IT! Did not care for gumbo nor étouffée that we ordered. The beignets were just ok as well....oh I did like that the spinach dip was served with pita chips

Sausage is ok, and likes the chicken when he is in the mood for it. He hasnt had anything there that he doesnt like. I loved the turkey, baked beans and Mac n cheese. Our Hurricane drink was pretty delicious( with part of the proceeds goes to a charity for that one particular drink). The server was polite and friendly. They smoke and bbq all the meats right out back of the restaurant so the food came out quick, fresh and amazing! I personally loved the Mustard and Sweet Red sauces while my husband prefers the slight heat of the Jalapeño sauce . The recipes for the sauces are hanging up on the walls as part of the decor. The only thing i could knock them for is the bathroms were a little dingy. Not really super dirty, just needs some updating with new tiles and paint. Overall great place and we will definitely will be returning!

However, I feel like we've had better barbecue up north than we did here... We ordered a brisket plate + a pork belly plate to share with mac & cheese, grits and corn pudding. I'm giving two stars for the sides & sauces being pretty good but that's about it. I don't know the area but I'm sure you can find better meats elsewhere :(
