Before I visited SC, I said there were three kinds of food I wanted to try: Fresh seafood, BBQ and Lowcountry cuisine. I'm glad I did some research and found Florence's. I ordered the 1/2 honey fried chicken w/ mac & cheese and collard greens. For dessert, we shared pecan pie. The chicken was moist & delicious from being brined and seasoning in the batter. The batter was crunchy, and perfectly applied so you didn't bite into a hunk of just batter. Likewise, the sides were some of the best I had during my trip to SC. Lastly, the pecan pie was really good also. However, I was expecting a bigger & taller slice. Regarding the ambiance, its smart casual here. The decor is fancier vs the down home cooking. Danielle took very good care of us. She was friendly & attentive. Florence's did the trick for us. We had eaten a lot of raw seafood and BBQ. I was excited to try this new spot. The updated decor and inviting atmosphere looked great. We started off with the fried green tomatoes and tomato pie. My friend said the tomato pie was really good but it's all cheese and tomatoes. The fried green tomatoes were crispy but needed seasoning. They were incredibly bland. For the main dish she ordered the smash burger and I ordered the fish and grits. She took one bite of the smash burger and sent it back saying it tasted like a frozen burger you'd get at Walmart. The fish and grits were ok. They too were bland and needed salt. A LOT of salt or any other seasoning. The okra, Lima beans and corn that come in this dish also tasted like it came out of a frozen bag. There is no seasoning in this dish whatsoever. Unfortunately this place was a miss and we won't be returning. Also the bathrooms look like a porta potty. You know the cheap plastic that porta potties are made out of? Yeah that's what the stalls are made out of. It looks so cheap and a big contrast from the rest of the restaurant. The staff was nice but they also look like they hate working here. read more

Dinner at Florence's Lowcountry Kitchen Tonight's meal at Florence's Lowcountry Kitchen was everything I'd hoped for in a classic southern experience! We started with the she-crab soup, rich and delicious with a perfect touch of sherry. Alongside, we had the fried squash and okra, which had a unique cut that really let the flavors shine--especially the squash. The texture was just right, letting us enjoy both the fresh veggies and the breading. Since Florence's is known for fried chicken, we had to try it, and it definitely lived up to the hype. The chicken was fried to perfection--crispy without any greasiness, which made it so enjoyable. And the sides? Absolute comfort in every bite! The greens and mac and cheese hit that perfect note for southern comfort food. We also went for the shrimp and grits, and the waitress kindly recommended adjusting the spice by going light on the sausage. It came sizzling hot with plenty of cheesy goodness, and I'm glad I took her suggestion--it was such a satisfying dish. If you're in the area and craving southern cooking, I'd highly recommend Florence's! It's the perfect spot to enjoy some true lowcountry deliciousness. Everything we ate was so good. The She Crab Soup was amazing. Friend and I shared the hot honey chicken with some slamming collards and creamy Gouda Mac and Cheese. Another friend had Fried Flounder with red rice. Nothing we had was disappointing. For apps we had the Lowcountry Hot Shrimp, She Crab Soup and fried okra and squash. All were very good and flavorful. The She Crab Soup alone will make me book a flight. LOL What made our experience so perfect was the service. We came from Georgia, Florida and North Carolina and even though we got there late (8:30 PM on a Saturday), they still gave us A-1 service with hot and fresh food. Our server, Gabe, was the best. He was so patient with us and very attentive. Gabe explained the menu and sold it very well. He took very good care of us making sure nothing was missed. If I could give 10 stars I would, 5 for the service and another 5 for the food. I most definitely will see this place again. This place is a "can't miss" stop when visiting Charleston again. Breakfast bowl with shrimp andouji sausage and cheesy grits was amazing. The jumboylia was good as well (note has a bit of sweet tomato sauce). The She crab soup was salty, which was a bummer because you could tell it would of had good flavor - our server was super nice and removed the charge. We also had a spicy bloody mary, which was tasty. The place was busy, but it was also Mother's Day - we were seated fast, and food came out within 10-15 minutes. Overall, great food, cost was to be as expected $15-$25 p/p for food. Very clean inside and lots of tables. If I lived around here, I would be back for those grits. read more

Florence's was a great dinner after spending the afternoon at Folly Beach! They were able to accommodate our large group (14 people) and service was quick, which was a blessing with so many children in our group. I had the seafood florentine and my husband had the jambalaya. Both dishes were large and flavorful - we definitely did not leave hungry or unsatisfied. I didn't catch our waitress's name, but she was wonderful all evening. Our toddler spilled a glass of water and she was very understanding. She brought out the children's food first and checked in frequently. At the end of the evening, she saw that we were taking a group photo and insisted on taking a picture as well so everyone could be in the photo. Good family times anytime. Out of town cousins and in town cousins 10 total unite and feast! Only thing that was forgotten was to make reservations!! Last minute trip and last minute call but we made it! They offered outside seating under the covered patio and we graciously accepted. The pouring torrential rain storm didn't dampen our spirits because our 4 families were together and that's what mattered most. So don't forget to make those all important reservations. This place is very popular and was extremely busy. Yummy looking menu. Andrea was EXCELLENT to put up with us Crazy Cousins trying to make decisions. She took our orders with a smile. She is very kind and caring, so much so that she was able to talk to one of our little ones and calm him down as he was having a hard time breathing. Not sure if was anxiety or a panic attack from his breathing difficulties. Nursing comes in handy when on and off of the job. There was a plethora of choices as most of us chose different entrees. We did however share some delicious Lowcountry Hot shrimp, Lowcountry crab dip and fried Okra & Yellow Squash-YUMMERZ for all. I chose to start with a bowl of Shecrab soup which was pretty good but my husband still ranks #1 which was his specialty!! For my entree I chose the Pork Chops with collards and Mac n cheese. The sides were delicious but the chops, although flavorful, could've been more tender with less char on the grill marks. Several others chose the Southern Hot Honey Chicken, Shrimp n grits, Seafood Pasta Florentine several burgers also and all seemed to be very pleased. We were looking for a good restaurant without fighting (or paying (again) for parking. Stumbled onto Florence's by just looking at what was easily accessible from the hotel. (Thanks to Yelp and the Yelpers for the reviews.) We decided to sample some appetizers and the soup since that is usually enough for us. On this trip we got the Low Country hot shrimp, the Low Country shrimp dip, and the she-crab soup. Even though my wife was initially scared by the "hot" in the name she absolutely loved the hot shrimp. The shrimp was battered perfectly and was fried so the batter was crispy and the shrimp was still tender. Now that sauce! Perfectly spicy addition. After such an amazing dish the shrimp dip was a bit disappointing. There was plenty of shrimp but the dip was just okay. I think it was because the hot shrimp dish had just blown us away and the bar was set high. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't subpar or bad, we were still basking in the glory of the hot shrimp. It would be great if you don't like spicy shrimp. Now the she-crab soup; it did not disappoint! It was thick, creamy, a little briny and filled with plenty of crab. Definitely a great example of this soup. We debated on splitting the cobbler of the day and were so glad we decided to get it. The cobbler of the day was peach raspberry and it was great. Obviously made to order it was a fruit filled delight topped with a white chocolate drizzle and whipped cream. We really enjoyed it. I would not hesitate to recommend this restaurant. Stopped by Florence's this week with a couple of friends to check out what is replacing Jalisco. I had never been to the previous Florence's location so I wasn't sure what to expect. We had some drinks and appetizers (Pimento Cheese, Fried Green Tomatoes, and the Hot Shrimp). All of the food was great for what it is, highly recommend the hot shrimp!! The menu is pretty classic Southern Food, you're not going here to expect anything fancy or off the beaten path. The cocktail list sadly does not have anything exciting, just your basics (margarita, rum punch, old fashioned, etc.), leaving a lot to be desired. The ambiance is nice! Overall, a good spot for a quick meal with friends or family, but not necessarily a recommend to everyone or bring out of town guests to kind of place! read more

Place seemed very clean and new. I was looking for a local old fashioned southern place. This place was nice, but didn't give me that vibe. She crab soup was incredibly salty, I love salt and I did eat it all but you should cut the salt back a bit if it was too salty for me. Fried green tomatoes were good, but I really think they should be cooked a little longer they were hard to cut thru. Flavor of the tomatoes and remolaudw was good. What a discovery ! Whenever I am in this part of the country I am always looking for some good Low Country food. Florence's happened to be very convenient to my host's place. We all ordered the most typical dishes: She Crab Soup and Shrimp & Grits. And started with some Fried green tomatoes. Everything was excellent and actually the She Crab Soup was the best I've ever had as well as the Shrimp & Grits which was made properly with Sausage. Touristy, well known places with much higher prices don't hit the home run that Florence's does. The evening was made even nicer by our Cheerful and helpful waitress Madeline Just to prove t his isn't a totally puff piece, the only semi-negative thing I can say is that the Peach Cobbler could have been better with riper peaches (hard to do in February) read more

We stopped in on a Monday evening off-season, assuming it would be slow. Wrong! All tables were taken by reservations. We sat at the bar, and after the bartender got organized, we were able to flag him down to order drinks. They were having a Restaurant Week special: 3 courses for $30. I had fried green tomatoes with remoulade as an app, gumbo as my main, and pecan pie for dessert. Excellent meal at a bargain price! We(3 of us) stopped by for 1 Margarita on National Margarita Day and ended up with 2 each and we ended up going from no food to 2 appetizers and then from no entree to 1 entree. Our waiter, Mike, was a pretty darn good up seller. Heck, we almost went home with the $6 hot sauce which was delicious. 1st, the Blood Orange Margaritas are wonderful and they were nice enough to make mine spicy and wow, those are good. A little spicy for my friends but on their second one they got theirs half spicy and loved them. The bartender did great on these. Appetizers next. Fried okra and squash. Outstanding, hot, yummy with a great sauce made even better by adding their special hot sauce. Bang bang shrimp or something like that which was also in it's own sauce which was delicious. Crispy even though in a sauce. Then somehow he talked us into the Fried chicken with collards and mac n cheese. Outstanding, half a chicken, and great for us to share. Mike almost talked us into desert as well. Crazy! I love this new location for them and hope they do well. Seemed busy last night so a good sign. Went for early dinner. They put us in small booth in bar area. My husband and I are not small people and the booth was tight. He had the jambalaya and said it was good but not great. I ordered the salmon and grits with the tomato gravy. The pecan crusted salmon was over taken by a bowl full of tomato gravy. The grits were not quite done but passable. My husband ordered the apple cobbler and it was excellent. The service was good but he was almost condescending when he came to the table. Overall the experience was good. read more

We had a fabulous dinner at Florence's. We started with the Hot Shrimp appetizer. The shrimp was crispy and the sauce was a sweet and spicy sauce that melted in your mouth. I had the seafood pasta with 2 pieces of garlic bread. The bread was warm, buttery, and soft. The pasta dish had scallops and shrimp. This was yummy! My wife had the Side Dish-- sautéed squash and onions, rice, and Gouda Mac & Cheese. It was all fabulous! The manager (Madeline) checked on us several times to make sure we were taken care of. Just got home from having dinner at the new location (where Applebee's used to be) and, I've gotta say: for a newly opened establishment .. it was really spot on. Yes, I know they had a place in South Windermere prior to opening this venture on James Island. However, there are always some hiccups in a new building, especially if you needed new FoH or BoH staffing. We saw none of that tonight. What we did see was a polished service with impeccable timing and food that was prepared with skill and good taste. There were four in our party and we each ordered a different entree for sampling. There was jambalaya, gumbo, pork chops, and hot honey fried chicken. The last two came with a smoked Gouda Mac & cheese and collard greens to die for! All agreed that next time, we would get double collards. Everyone enjoyed their meal with not a single critical remark about any of them. We decided to go for broke and each ordered a different dessert to sample around. Key Lime Pie, Bourbon Pecan Pie, Bread Pudding and Apple Cobbler. While I found the bread pudding a bit dry, the flavor was good, the key lime pie was fresh, the pecan pie was good, but the star was the hot apple cobbler. There are several other items on their menu I want to try, especially the shrimp and grits, but, that's for another night. read more

We were sad to see Jalisco closing but excited for the new southern food restaurant to open in our area. Ergh it was really disappointing. The burger appeared and tasted like McDonalds (I'm not a fan) thin patties and plastic cheese. The jambalaya was tasty because of the spices but they were stingy with the amount of shrimp and sausage. The rice was clumpy. It all came out very quickly so felt and tasted like a glorified fast food venue. Not much ambiance - same "dead space" as Jalisco in fact other than the pots and the smaller bar, it looked the same. Service was ok but we didn't require much. I think everything has been downgraded from what it was. I'll be surprised if this lasts. read more

We went to Florence's for dinner last night while in town to visit our daughter. Food and service were excellent. My wife had the Seared Salmon Salad, our son the Jambalaya and I had the Gumbo. We all also had a side of Collard Greens. Salad was perfect for my wife, Jambalaya was nice and spicy and Gumbo was classically done and perfect with a little hot sauce. Collard Greens were an excellent appetizer for our meals. We will be back. read more

Wow! Florence's Low Country Kitchen is back!! Although we were a big fan of Jalisco, we are very excited to have this low country gem back on James Island! We had the fried shrimp and flounder platter with creamy smoked gouda mac and cheese, fries and southern slaw. The shrimp and flounder were fresh and local with the perfect amount of light breading. The mac and cheese was creamy and not overly rich. I am not the biggest fan of slaw, but this was the best I have had! The hot fried chicken wrap was very good, with the 82 Queen Charleston Hot Sauce adding just the right amount of heat--so good that we bought a few bottles of the sauce to take home! The menu has a few new selections that we can't wait to get back to try! The restaurant is cozy with a great bar and has a lovely outdoor patio (although it was too cold for us to enjoy last night!) Best food we've had on our trip to Charleston! It was near the house we booked so we took a chance and Florence's did not disappoint! We had the blackened mahi mahi plate and jambalaya, both were delicious!! Our server was a delight and catered to ALL of our needs!
