I had somewhat high expectations for this restaurant but it fell short. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The interior is comforting and warm. It feels like you've come to dine in your relative's home.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Our waiter was kind. We ordered the blackened catch sandwich and the tomato pie omelet. Our food came out very quickly. Complimentary biscuits- Amazing. I usually stray away from biscuits but damn these were good. The butter is also super light and whipped! Blackened catch sandwich: Do not recommend!! The fish just overpowered everything else in the sandwich. I truly cannot remember any other ingredient that was in the sandwich. Truly. The fish was also a bit dry. And I'm pretty sure my sandwich was missing the heirloom tomato..I was halfway done when I realized there was no tomato flavor at all and there was no trace of one inside. Tomato pie omelet- I don't remember tasting it but my boyfriend said he didn't really enjoy it. I really wanted to like this place, but it was a bit underwhelming. The brunch menu was severely lacking in vegetarian options, so I ended up ordering the Southern Caesar Salad. It was ok, but nothing to write home about and it's not a menu item that you will reminisce on and crave. It had a weird smattering of like 10 butter beans, which seemed out of place since there were so few as well as they didn't really go with the rest of the salad. I also tried a piece of somebody in my groups Fried Green Tomato's, and those were also unremarkable. The best thing I ate here was a biscuit with butter, which they brought out for free to the table after we had ordered. Service was also not great, our waitress seemed annoyed and had a bit of an attitude from the minute we were seated.
[[HIGHLIGHT]]What an adorable place for a lunch date![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We have been here before, and we were as equally pleased with this visit! Our server Judd was so sweet and outgoing, he was proactive and quick with service and keeping our waters filled on the outdoor porch. We chose the seasonal burrata salad & the chicken & waffles. Both were incredible!!! The burrata was so fresh, as well as the fresh peaches and arugula. The chicken & waffles portion is HUGE! I was glad we split both items! Such a perfect lunch date!

After we ordered, we got some free biscuits and our entrees came out surprising fast. The portions were huge for the cost, and everything tasted great.
Poogans Porch is one of the highest rated restaurants on Yelp in Charleston and its got that rating for a reason. It's located inside an old house in the heart of downtown Charleston. It's named after their late dog, you can even see the grave in the front yard. There are photos of the dog all over the restaurant, it's really sweet. First off, you MUST get reservations. They book up so fast so if you want to make sure you can dine, make a reservation. They were turning people away when we were waiting for our table. We were a part of six so we were able to see a variety of dishes at our table and everyone was very happy with their meals, even the one friend who is hard to please! We got the pimento cheese bites as an app and they were delicious! I got the Lowcountry Hash as my entree and it was flavorful and just the right amount of food. My SO got the crab cake benedict and it looked so good! He said it tasted good too! This wasn't my first time to Poogans and it won't be my last!
The food and service were fantastic. Our bartender Zoey - the best! We had the fig jam martinis, pimento cheese balls and the shrimp and grits - all delicious and all pictured.
Poogan's Porch is worth a flight to just eat there lol. It's absolutely a beautiful place and the best southern food, I have ever had!! I got an omelette, that had tomatoes, bacon, and green aioli on it with home fries. We also tried the biscuits and gravy and the fried green tomatoes. The Banana Pudding is what I imagine heaven to be like :) It was so good, you could tell it was made from scratch and not boxed pudding. The staff were very friendly. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It was a lovely and quiet place to eat.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Beware, if the hours - many places in Charleston close early :) so keep that in mind!! I'll be back ;)
Overall, it was just ok! Long, long lines, but I was told that the community table was available. Service was decent. I ordered a breakfast plate and the best things were the grits--they were very good! However, the biscuits were hard and the ham was very salty. I was kinda disappointed because Charleston is a great food city, but this missed the mark.
I'm a regular visitor to Charleston, but had never been to Poogan's Porch. How did that happen?! It's delightful! Poogan's Porch is a couple blocks off the main Market/Bay path, but it's still close to a good number of hotels and historic sites. It was a casual 15 minute stroll from my hotel right on E Bay. The service and food were excellent and the setting is inside a finely converted historic style home. We had a reservation for brunch on a weekday, but it wouldn't have been impossible to walk in that time of day. I would assume that it gets busier on weekends and in more tourist seasons. There is an option for outside seating, but in the Charleston heat and humidity, we opted for sitting inside. My friend and I each got cocktails and entrees. Cocktails were generously sized and reasonably priced. I was right to get the cajun remoulade on the side of my Fried Chicken Sandwich as this allowed me to dole out my spice as I could tolerate. My friend's Chicken and Waffles were fluffy and moist. The seasoning on these boneless chicken tenders was *chef's kiss*. Here's the only thing that I will mention as a drawback: The bathrooms. I understand this is a converted house and the historic-ness is part of its charm. However, when your women's bathroom has two stalls and one of the toilets isn't screwed into the floor and you cannot close the door without straddling the bowl... there's an impact to your enjoyment of the restaurant. I would emphasize this even more when the waste basket in the bathroom is overflowing and there are multiple hosts at the host stand waiting for customers to come in. If you haven't been to Poogan's Porch, it's worth a visit the next time you're in Charleston.
Food and service were both outstanding! The portions were incredibly generous--the chicken sandwich came with three chicken filets, making it an amazing value. Our server recommended the fried green tomatoes and the pimento cheese fritters, and both were absolutely delicious. Everything exceeded our expectations, and we can't wait to come back!

The restaurant was opened in 1978 so they must be doing it right! We kicked off the meal with cocktails, a Bloody Mary for me and a Mimosa for my wife. Biscuits were served with the meal. Our server recommended the Pimento Cheese Fritters so we had these as a starter. These were delicious, served on top of bacon jam. My wife went with a classic egg dish and I ordered the chicken and waffle. This was a lot of food! It was all very good though. If you're in Charleston looking for a good brunch, I can recommend Poogan's Porch!

Probably wouldn't return, but worth a one-time visit.
It turns out the pooch that this place is named for passed in '79 but you can still enjoy dinner in his honor! We snagged a seat at the community table on a busy Saturday evening and ordered - tea Collins cocktail: which was supposed to taste like tea infused gin and hibiscus and lemon but instead tasted of watery tartness - Fig jam martini: did not taste like fig at all, just sweet gin - Caesar salad: delicous corn bread cracklings and white beans for some vegetarian protein. I always love a twist on a classic Caesar! - Mac and cheese appetizer: a GENEROUS basically standard full size serving for an app, hit the spot - Banana pudding: very different than Magnolia's in that it contains mills wafers and tastes both more and less like banana but a fun way to end the meal served in a mason jar Logistics: - indoor and outdoor seating - Limited street parking nearby but there's a public paid garage a few blocks away - Expect a long wait at peak times or try to grab a spot at bar or community table

1/10 (Service) - 10 1/10 (Food) - 6, based on two meals I had 1/10 (Ambiance) Down- Home Breakfast - very basic, If one is used to flavored food, this dish wasn't it especially not for the price! Farmhouse Burrata - Now this was flavorful and more on the sweet side because of the pickled peaches, Although I did switch out the Arugula for the Spring Mix which personally if you don't like Arugula than the switch is definitely necessary! Overall, I definitely be open to coming back to try different dishes to give a proper food review. read more

Make a reservation first. This will very much improve your experience. Poogan's is a staple when it comes to downtown Charleston dining for us. One of the oldest in Charleston and super cute from the outside in. I also love that they named the place after their loyal pupper dog. For my taste, Poogan's makes one of the best shrimp and grits I've ever had. They also have phenomenal she crab soup, pimento cheese fritters with bacon jam, and collards. My friends got the fried chicken which I hadn't had before and the fry was literally perfect. Not too thick but a major crunch. We will continue to bring our friends and family here when showing them downtown. read more

During our recent 35th anniversary trip to Charleston, SC, my wife and I made reservations at Poogan's Porch well in advance after seeing countless recommendations and glowing reviews. Based on the hype, we were expecting one of those "must-visit" Charleston dining experiences. Unfortunately, our experience didn't quite live up to those expectations. [[HIGHLIGHT]]After checking in, we spent some time in the room that houses the bar, waiting to be seated. With servers, bussers, and other employees busily moving through the area, it felt crowded and somewhat awkward as we tried to stay out of everyone's way.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]While we were waiting, water suddenly began pouring from the ceiling and down a doorway leading into the kitchen. Apparently, something had tipped over upstairs and leaked through. While accidents happen, it added to the feeling that things were a bit less polished than we expected.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We started with the fried green tomatoes, which were excellent and easily the highlight of the meal. Crispy, flavorful, and exactly what I hoped they would be. My wife ordered the crispy Caesar salad and thoroughly enjoyed it. I chose the egg white - tomato pie omelet for my entrée, and while it was perfectly edible, I found it to be rather average. It lacked much flavor, and the sun-dried tomatoes were quite chewy and difficult to bite through, which detracted from the dish. [[HIGHLIGHT]]One thing we couldn't help but notice was that the restaurant had a distinct old-house smell. While the building's historic character is certainly part of its appeal, the odor was noticeable.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The service experience was mixed. Our server was friendly, attentive, and did his best to make our visit enjoyable. However, most of the other staff members seemed disengaged and unhappy to be there. The greeters were not particularly welcoming, and the employee who delivered our food didn't bother to smile or even speak to us. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The overall atmosphere lacked the warmth and hospitality that Charleston is known for.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I would also caution anyone considering paying extra when making reservations to secure specific seating. Based on our experience, I don't believe the upgraded seating options would be worth the additional cost. Poogan's Porch wasn't a bad meal by any means, but given the reputation, reviews, and recommendations, it fell short of our expectations. When we return to Charleston, there are simply too many other restaurants we'd like to try before returning here. read more
Amazing place for brunch/lunch!! The complimentary warm biscuits were absolutely delicious with the whipped butter!! I got the poogans chicken sandwich and it was the best I've ever had! The chicken was light and not greasy at all! It was so good! We will be back! read more

This spot is famous for its She-Crab Soup and Pimento Cheese Fritters, so naturally I figured this would be the perfect spot to try both for the first time! Turns out, they're just okay. Same goes for the Fried Green Tomatoes - not bad, just not memorable. I'm usually a fried chicken enthusiast, but Poogan's Famous Bone-In Fried Chicken missed the mark. The batter was super thick and salty, to the point where we ended up peeling most of it off just to enjoy the meat underneath. Ironically, the unexpected MVP of the meal was the complimentary buttermilk biscuits with honey butter. Warm, fluffy, slightly dangerous - I could've happily eaten those all morning and called it brunch. Service was on the slower side. Since the restaurant gets pretty busy, I recommend making a reservation. I booked outdoor seating and ended up on the back porch. There was no real view, but at least a nice breeze. Overall, the experience was fine but didn't quite live up to the hype. Worth a visit if you're curious. Remember to save room for the biscuits! read more
Went to Poogan's Porch with a friend and only waited about 15 minutes to be seated. We got the fried green tomatoes ($15) and the award-winning shrimp and grits ($24) and both were really good. The fried green tomatoes had the perfect amount of tang, and the sauce they came with was so good -- definitely a standout. The shrimp and grits were comforting and flavorful, and the whole place has a cozy Southern vibe. The staff were incredibly sweet too. Overall, a really solid Charleston spot I'd happily go back to. read more

Good choice for breakfast or brunch. Shrimp and grits were tasty, biscuits fluffy and moist. Their she-crab soup is generous on the sherry so it's surprisingly sweet. The bacon was a bit flimsy and bland, so it is likely uncured. I had the grapefruit mimosa, which is much more sparkling wine than juice. My daughter enjoyed the Bloody Mary. The establishment is charming, with so much of the home's original flooring and fixtures preserved. Beautiful. read more
Stopped here while visiting downtown one day. The restaurant itself being in this old historical house was super cool. Our waitress was also amazing and so kind. The menu felt small. I ended up getting the Down Home Breakfast and the food was good, but nothing unique. My mom and sister got the Chicken and Waffles and the chicken was great and so was the waffle. The peaches and syrup were extra sweet and should have gotten those on the side. read more

My wife and I just had a late lunch at Poogan's Porch. It was fabulous. My wife ordered a salad with shrimp and I had the fried chicken sandwich. It was absolutely the best chicken sandwich I have had in my life. Big juicy, plump pieces of chicken with Southern seasoned breading (similar taste as KFC original chicken seasoning, but better) and the sauce with pimento cheese and bacon jam was subtle yet delicious. I'd come back from California to Charleston just for the chicken sandwich. Yum. read more
What a charming gem on a side street in Charleston. An old home hosts this restaurant. Seating is both on the main floor and on the second. We were given a nice table near windows. During season, near holidays I do suggest reservations. Food is really good southern flair style. Large biscuits upon arrival if you check in, which we did. Fluffy and hot. We ordered the chicken and waffles (with everything) and a fried chicken sandwich/fries. Peach slices, pecans and a gooey syrup top the waffles. It is good BUT- I would request syrup on the side as it deteriorates the crunchy waffle quickly. Hot chicken strips adorne this. Plate is large enough to share! Hubs got the fried chicken sandwich. Again, great chicken. This could use a sauce tbh. Overall, a good value considering where they are located. read more
Wow, this place is a gem in downtown charleston. Truly some of the best breakfast/brunch we had during our trip- filling and perfect for a cold day. The restaurant itself is in an old house, adding to the charm and ambience. Tucked right behind king street it's an easy find after your shopping day. We got seated with no wait on a Wednesday morning in January, it's off season so we didn't expect a wait. The food came incredibly quick, which was great because we were hungry. I got the eggs and bacon platter with home fries, my husband got the chicken and waffles. If you're debating getting anything on the menu, definitely get the chicken and waffles. They were a hit. The sweet blueberry syrup with the stewed peaches complimented the salty fried chicken perfectly. read more

This is becoming a must stop for brunch each year that we come to Charleston Today I tried the new menu item - crab cake Benedict. It was absolutely amazing. We never miss a chance to come here because of the awesome food! We got our favorite room with the fireplace and a nice quaint few tables. Our server today was Zachary. He was absolute awesome and we hope to get him next time as well! Such a great guy. read more

My favorite Charleston restaurant so far! Started the meal with their homemade biscuits with honey butter and wowza SO good. The Caesar with fried chicken was great - huge portions. Fries were also great. You HAVE to get the ranch. My significant other got the market blackened fish sandwich and he said it was excellent. So much so that I didn't get a bite ;) read more

It LOOKED amazing but me and my guest were underwhelmed with the appetizer and entrees, HOWEVER, we would come back, literally just for the peach cobbler. The peach cobbler was the highlight of the whole meal and I would wait in line for a taste of it again. read more

Everything was amazing. The waitstaff, the manager, the everyone. And THEN there's the food. Wow!!! We shared the dried green tomatoes and pimiento cheese fritters on BACON jam. Oh my goodness. And then I ordered the tomato pie omelette and our wonderful waitress asked me if I wanted the fried potatoes that comes with it or if I wanted to get fancy and get the grits.... With pimento cheese on top. Yes, please. My husband got the shrimp and grits with an egg on top. Also did not disappoint. If you throw a stone in Charleston, you're bound to hit a restaurant with top tier food. Poogan's Porch is no exception! When I say this is the best Shrimp and Grits I've ever had, I truly mean it! In town for work and got this recommendation from locals. It is in a unique old house with two stories and outside dining also. The service was great and food also very good. My favorite was the friend green tomatoes app. The pimiento cheese fritters were not hot enough and kind of tasted like just cheddar. Shrimp & grits were really good but the Caesar salad was only pretty good, it sounded better than it ended up being for me. My colleagues liked their meals, too. Great dinner in Charleston! read more
What a terrible thanksgiving dinner for 9 people! When you charge $75 per person, you don't expect to see the food items be shaped like the ice cream scoops used to put them on the plate! The Caesar salad was awful. So much cornbread stuff on top that it should have hardly been called a salad. The turkey dinner was incredibly salty no one person could finish theirs and there just wasn't enough water in the restaurant to help keep up swallowing that! I ordered the beef tenderloin for an additional $5 and it was the tiniest plate there was and I could only stomach one little medallion due to the salt level. Because my dinner was inedible my niece gave me a chicken thigh from her fried chicken dinner. I cut into it and it was completely raw!! We all gagged and immediately wanted to leave. The dessert was a teeny tiny banana pudding or a simple pecan pie. I'm just appalled the we spent $1,000 on dinner that not one of us enjoyed. Such a shame! Made a reservation to stop in here on a recent trip to Charleston. Our table was ready right away. We sat in the back room on the bottom floor. It was nice because there's a big window so it felt like you are outside without the heat and humidity. It did get super loud in there for a bit though. Service was very friendly and helpful. ALL of the food and drinks were so good. We got the pimento cheese fritters, fried chicken sandwich, crab cake Benedict and peach cobbler. I will say the peach cobbler was not my favorite because they crumble already cooked biscuits on top instead of baking the biscuits on top. But we still ate it! My sister, my good girlfriend visiting from the DMV, and I decided to grab dinner two weeks ago while she was in town for a wedding. I gave her three options and sis chose Poogan's Porch. Now listen... I live and work right here and had never eaten there (don't judge me, lol). So I went straight to the menu and that swordfish was calling my name like we were cousins. Parking? BABY. We found FREE street parking downtown. Already a blessing. I made reservations beforehand (and you definitely should too), and we got seated right away. The whole place screams Old Charleston charm--tiny courtyard, creaky floors, autographed celebrity photos like you're walking through Charleston history. We ended up upstairs with the sweetest server ever. We asked her for her faves while we scanned the menu--even though I already knew my spirit was aligned with the swordfish. Our server brought out their signature biscuits while we waited--pretty presentation, but whew... very heavy on the baking powder/soda. My sister is the family biscuit baker, and her face said everything. She was not pleased. I started with the She-Crab Soup because I love me some She-Crab... however. They add sherry. And I don't like sherry. And sherry does not like me. Our server noticed my face wasn't giving "yes ma'am," asked what I thought, and when I told her it wasn't my vibe, she took it off the table and the bill. We love a considerate queen. My sister got the Southern Caesar Salad with the butter beans, cheese cracklin', cornbread gremolata--the whole situation. She said it was "different," but she enjoyed it once she pushed that cheese cracklin' to the side. My girl from the DMV went with the Shrimp & Grits--now she KNOWS seafood, okay? Charleston and DMV seafood don't always speak the same language, but she still enjoyed it. Only thing: she asked for the andouille sausage to be removed and it still showed up. Now let's talk about my plate. When the Lemongrass-Crusted Swordfish came out? Oh, she was pretty. She was plated like she had somewhere important to be. Between the sweet potato and the spicy peanut butter gravy, it was giving African diaspora flavors, and I was here for it. I have a gluten sensitivity, and they were super willing to accommodate, but I wanted to keep the fried banana. I was thinking fried banana like we fry plantains or those sweet pan-fried bananas. But no--these came out battered. So that part wasn't my fave. BUT the swordfish + sweet potato + spicy peanut butter situation? BABYYYYY. That was chef's kiss perfection. Service was amazing, vibes were good, food had personality, and we even had a whole table moment laughing about a little "Charleston guest" who popped out while we were eating--lol, if you know, you know! Overall, I'd definitely give Poogan's Porch another go. They've got gluten-free options, the ambiance is authentic Charleston, and the service alone is worth the visit. read more
What a cute restaurant in downtown Charleston set in an old house! In an effort to balance healthy and unhealthy, I ordered a house salad (healthy!) with fried chicken and ranch dressing (not so healthy) but at least it made me feel slightly better about indulging in all the delicious fried Southern food on my trip. read more

There's a patio in the front that's accessible, and the tables are not high.

There is a bar! It is first come first serve and they offer the full menu there.

The restaurant was closed for the month of January but is now back to normal operating hours!

No issues. They accommodated my Resy booking without problems or confirmation.
Has anyone had issues of this place not picking up their phones? We have called multiple times to make reservations and no luck on hosts picking up.
They are too busy providing delicious food to their patrons. Not sure if they take reservations, but it's well worth waiting in line for the shrimp and grits.
Are there heaters for outside dining?
When we were there in November there were not any outdoor heaters.
Is there a dress code for dinner?
There isn't a dress code per se, but the south is generally more formal. I would recommend at least khaki shorts for gents and a sundress for ladies.
