Bertie's was close to our hotel on Grassmarket so we decided to give them a try & see if the Fish & Chips were truly proper. We got here around 7 & were seated right away. They were starting to get busy & the tables were 75% full. We started with a couple of Pints. The Pale Ale & the Lager (Morreti). Really enjoyed the Lager-refreshing & light! We ordered the grilled Halloumi for starter. The cheese was delicious & grilled perfectly-salsa was great for dipping. They have a wide variety of dishes so this isn't just a Fish & Chips spot. Despite all of the other temping dishes (vegan, veggie, gluten free, etc.) we both ended up ordering the battered Cod with upgraded chips. (Chip butty sauce & bacon/cheese/jalapeño). The fish was cooked just right with a light & flaky crust & wasn't greasy. Bonus-sustainably sourced fish. Definitely go with the "loaded" upgrade for the chips. The Chip Butty gravy was salty/tangy & the bacon/cheese/jalapeño option had a nice mix of salty & spicy flavor with just the right amount of cheese. The vibe was upbeat & the restaurant was full by 8. All of our servers from entrance to exit were excellent! We found out they just opened last fall. The fish & chips may be proper, but the customer service was certainly not. Upon entering, the man at the host station did not look up from his computer once to acknowledge us. Another employee came over to the host station three times before telling us to sit down in the bar area while a table was cleared; there was already another couple in the same predicament & three more parties would join us before our time in purgatory would end. Meanwhile, we got to watch someone who appeared to be a supervisor clear ALL the empty tables simultaneously & in the least efficient way possible--wiped all the tables, took napkins to all the tables, placed forks in all the tables, placed knives on all the tables...four separate trips to each table. So the couple who proceeded us into the joint got seated at the same time as the party who'd arrived ten minutes after we had. Needless to say, seating five parties simultaneously slammed the waiter staff, so another wait preceded our ordering. The food itself wasn't bad, but the service was so poor, I'd not go back. This was such a cool establishment to visit right on Victoria Street! The restaurant is huge and had such a unique atmosphere. An open layout with a open kitchen makes this place really feel like a fish market. On the way to the bathrooms you'll see funny comic strips and artwork that give the feel of busy city market where you can grab newspapers as you get your local grub. Our waitress was super attentive and had great recommendations for us when we asked what to check out while we were visiting the city. Food wise we got the haggis egg rolls which were am-a-zing!! If you're scared of trying haggis then this appetizer is an easy way to try out it because it was so delicious you did not need to bother about thinking where it came from. We got fish n chips which came out in huge hearty portions. Overall this was a great find and I'm sure it gets super busy during the on season. We were after some top-notch fish and chips one summer night in Edinburgh, and a quick google search pointed us quite enthusiastically toward Bertie's. The giant mess hall on the second floor feels a bit commercial, more like a mall food court than a restaurant, but the service was decent and the prices are fairly reasonable. This yank's honest impression of the Battered Haddock is as follows. The exterior was insanely crispy and puffed up, with the pocket of hot steam locking the juices in and making for some tender and juicy fish; however, the flesh was tragically under-salted and it could've done with a side of creamy mayo, which we promptly requested. The chips were thick and fluffy, but had gone a little cool by the time our plates made their way to our table. Now the Deep-fried Haggis, on the other hand, which is a traditional Scottish savory pudding comprised of sheep offal and spices, was magnificent and captivated us with rich, nutty tones and a hint of sweetness. Overall, Bertie's is not a bad introduction to the genre if you're in the area, though I'm not sure I would go out of me way to dine here personally. read more
