We had a very nice lunch here. We got here about 11:45 AM and like 20 minutes later the place was absolutely jammed so if you don't wanna wait get here a little before noon at the latest. My husband had their fish and chips and I had their English meat pie, which was quite good. The service was spot on and they only take tap so cash won't work here. The place is large enough to handle a fair amount of people and although it's a bit of a tourist trap it was a nice stop for lunch. A little pricey, but overall, we enjoyed our lunch and had fantastic service.
Loved it. Went to scotland for a short trip. And I had to know about the raving on fish & chips. Bertie's was conveniently located around victoria st, and it was a huge place with 2 floors. We ordered a salad and the classic fish & chips for a snack. The portion of the fish was huge! Chips were great. Loved that they put us in a good seat with a view.
Fun looking place in the main touristy area of Edinburgh Old Town! I opted with the walk up take away option was was very convenient as you can get things ala cart. The Battered haddock was a bit on the dry side but had good batter. Grilled sausages were nice snappy with sort of a fruity schmear for dipping. The fried calamari was a little on the soggy side but had good flavor. I think I'll opt for the in dining experience next time!
We decided to have fish & chips for our first night in Edinburgh. Why not have some proper ones? I actually bookmarked this place because of the awesome menu items. It also happens to be on the most touristy street in the city. But don't let that scare you off. The battered fish is very good here. It was the twice-cooked chips that didn't live up to the hype. I think the sweet potato fries would have been a better choice. Their World Famous Battered Haddock is the way to go here. It's what they are known for. We loved the light & crispy batter. The haddock was white & tender. That was the high point of our meal. The chips were hard and lukewarm. We didn't say anything because there was no way we'd be able to eat them all even if they brought out a fresher batch. It's just a side item that we didn't need anyway. I'd usually go for mushy peas or onion rings, but I think it would have been an extra charge to get them. We did share a Deep Fried Mars Bar. It was a rich & delicious treat. A great sweet ending to a very nice meal. The décor and atmosphere is wonderful here. There's a big red bow above the entrance with a takeaway counter at the ground level. You'll see the Christmas tree on the second level as you're heading up to the restaurant. The bar & restaurant on the next 2 floors are bright & spacious with lots of seating options. The service was great as well. Noah made it a nice experience. We would definitely visit again if ever in Edinburgh.
This place offers a silly amount of dishes/drinks, but I loved all of them! Huge seating area (will never have to wait for a table) and fish and chips were very good and unique if you like a more Smokey flavor. Also thought we'd try the haggis spring rolls and macaroni cheese croquettes which were both great. Maybe next time I'll try the fried mars bar
Looking for fish and chips and Berthies comes up again and again. It was located in the old town and on a busy tourist street. So I was skeptical at first. I was seated promptly despite no reservations. Ordered their famous battered fish. Haddock is used instead of cod. Batter was light and crispy. Fries/chips were ok. Served with tartar but table has ketchup, vinegar etc. staff were friendly and quick. Take note that there is auto service charge added. Price is reasonable given location. Locations is convenient when exploring the old town and in need of a nice respite from the cold (I was here in January )
The fish and chips here are delicious and the batter is airy and super crispy!! Truly recommend coming here. Also beware the portion is huge lol. We also ordered the onions rings and they were soo good!!! People were nice our beer took a while to come out but the waiter apologized and brought it out shortly after that.
I have never had a fish flake like this. It was so mild in flavor, crunchy exterior, not a heavy dense batter that ruins your day from being so strong. It was just light, airy, and truly magnificent. I think about this often. The fries TASTED golden. Dipped in the sauces- both the fish and chips were amazing! Will return when I go back to Edinburgh. Our waiter was kind and gave his recommendations as well! (Also me and my friend split this and it was plenty)

Single traveler. This is a very warm, welcoming place. I did not love that they put me upstairs near the curtain where the staff stops to eat, but other than that I really enjoyed the atmosphere and the food. Service was good, the fish and chips dish was quite nice and I'm sorry I did not buy a tee shirt because Berties Proper seems like a place you need to be at least once when you're in Edinburgh. It was recommended to me by two different hotels in the area and I think they knew it would be a comfortable, fun atmosphere for me eating alone.
I made reservations after hearing my tour guide recommend it and seeing it the fish and chips are cooked in tallow. So grateful I made reservations as it was quite busy and a good crowd waiting for a spot. Service was kind and friendly. Our food came out quickly. The fish and chips were delightful. The fish was crispy and flavorful. The mushy pea side can be shared by two, a good complement to the fries. I appreciate seeing on the chalkboard where the ingredients came from, largely regionally. Don't let the tourist area of Victoria Street deter you, it's quite the legitimate spot!
Absolutely wonderful Scottish dining experience! The fish and chips were excellent, nice and flaky, add some malt vinegar and mayonnaise for the chips, just fantastic. The restaurant is right in the heart of Edinburgh on a cobblestone street, really sets the mood. Group of (11) of us, seated and served with a smile. Our waitress was a joy!

We're in Edinburgh, and not being from the UK, were scouting for a classic fish and chips. In addition, I wanted to get somethingbat least haggis - like. Berties had over 50k Google raters, Yelp over 500, and each were in the 4.5+ range. We were not disappointed. One plus for a busy operation like this is that you are likely to get fresh fish. The haddock was very fresh, perfectly cooked, and served with a not-overwhelming quantity of chips. I tried, but wasn't a fan of the Heinz mayo (even though I was a Pittsburgh native and they make the best ketchup, I'll take a real aioli any day). I used the malt vinegar and it was just right. Liquid refreshment was in the form of a draft oatmeal stout. The really cool find was the haggis spring roll. With a crispy shell under my and a fascinating meaty filling, served on a sweet / spicy Asian sauce, this was a tasty, if unconventional intro to the Scottish staple. Great app for 2 or 3 or 4 to get a little taste. Great spot. read more

The Haggis is so delicious and they serve it two different ways. Our server was amazing, & they really take allergies and dietary restrictions seriously. It was a little loud but they have a take out counter as well if you prefer to eat somewhere quieter. read more

Our first night in town on a surprise trip for my wife and i could not ask for a better "casual/ reasonable cost and good fish and chips for my bride of 38 years. Great place and service was prompt. Dessert came before the meal for some reason. My husband thoroughly enjoyed the fish. Big enough to share. Crispy on outside and tender on inside. First time eating a deep fried candy bar. It was good. There is a lift to get upstairs. The fries could be better. Not cooked long enough. Was thick with no crisp. read more

We are fish and chip aficionados and Berties nailed it - very proper fish and chips indeed! I had Yelped "best fish and chips" in Edinburgh and Berties was at the top of the list. We were exploring the Royal Mile and passed by Berties just as we were thinking about a place to get lunch. The fish was a very nice and very large full thick haddock filet fried to perfection. I asked for a lager to go with it. It was so good that I really wished that I had room for more but could barely finish my first order. read more
Told this was the best fish and chips in town. It was good and the fish and chips were great. If you don't have a reservation you may be waiting awhile at dinner until the crowd starts to drop around 8:30 or so. Service is just okay. They are trying to get you in and out so take your time with your ordering. read more
We ordered a takeout here while wandering around Victoria Street. The restaurant is nicely decorated, there is a takeout order booth downstairs, and upstairs has a big dining area. I knew immediately it's going to be good the moment I walked in the door because it smelled so good. Not many restaurants open before 11:30 am in Edinburgh, so it's a huge plus that Berties opened at 10am. I also liked that their menu has gluten free options and kids menu. We didn't feel like to dine in, so I ordered a GF battered Haddock fish and chips takeout. It tasted as amazing as original. The fish was fresh, flaky and well-seasoned. The person took my order also recommended the IRN BRU - Scotland's beloved national drink. It has a pretty unique taste- I didn't think I liked it, but I was glad I tried. We waited about 15-20 minutes for my order but service was great and inviting. When we walked by half past noon, I saw a long queue compared to a nice quiet ambiance when we were there at 10:30am. While in Scotland, I wanted to try out a good fish and chips, without letting my gluten-free dietary requirements get in the way, and I decided on Bertie's, which is a short walk away from St Giles Cathedral and the Royal Mile, in the city centre of Edinburgh, on Victoria Street. Bertie's is perhaps the only business that I've found offering cheaper prices on Uber Eats, compared to dining in, I'm not sure if that is a difference in portion size, but I only dined inside with them during my time in Edinburgh. Haddock and Chips would be £14.95 in the restaurant or £12.95 on Uber Eats. The venue inside is clean, modern and comfortable, you go in through the steps or elevator (the latter was out of order during my visit so I opted for the stairs). I was able to get a table easily, I had a reservation but they didn't seem too busy when I came in, I presume reservations are needed at peak times however. I ordered the gluten-free haddock and chips, other than the fish and chips, the gluten-free options are limited, with many fish and chip shop favourites including gravy, curry sauce and sausage, not having a gluten-free option or alternative. They did provide gluten-free vinegar and a "chip shop brown sauce", but I wasn't a fan of the sauce and would have liked a curry sauce or gravy better. I had mixed feelings about my food, the fish and the batter were fantastic and looked almost indistinguishable from my guest's regular fish and chips, the haddock tasted so high quality, and it came apart with my fork, no need for a knife. The batter also tasted good. The chips on the other hand were awful, they were bland, a little hard and didn't taste nice at all. My guest did mention her chips were considerably better than mine which makes me want to ask why they need to do different chips in the first place, surely a high-quality fish and chip shop shouldn't need to add things to chips (such as flour), and can easily use their own chip frier, ensuring both gluten eaters and coeliacs alike can enjoy chips with their meal. We shared some mushy peas on the side plate, they were fine, nothing too special, but they were cold, and I would have liked them to at least be warm. For my drink, I had pineapple juice, which was nice, but I would have preferred it without ice. A service charge was added to the bill, which for what's nothing more than a large chippy with a sit-down aspect isn't something I'm a fan of. 3* - The fish was fantastic and probably the best gluten-free fish I've ever had, but with a lack of a good sauce and the terrible chips, it left a lot to be desired, especially as it is a tad expensive for fish and chips. read more

The best fish and chips in the UK. I would fly back to Edinburgh just to eat at Berties. The restaurant is very cool inside and the people are very nice. If you're in the area, you would be remiss to not eat here. read more

The food and ambiance are great at Bertie's! Got seated right away, I suggest making a reservation online! The ambiance is casual dining and the staff is friendly. We wanted to try haggis for the first time so the haggis egg rolls were the way to go and they did not disappoint. The black pudding egg was interesting and didn't really feel cohesive. They were able to quickly accommodate a very large group of us without a reservation which was greatly appreciated! Food was great. Personally recommend the fish and chips with curry sauce. The only issue we had was the service was a bit slow when trying to pay our bill but otherwise everyone in our group enjoyed eating here. read more

This is only my third visit to Edinburgh and I always avoided this place because it screams "tourist trap." But after hearing high praise in a travel group, we decided to check it out. We had no reservations but we only waited a couple minutes until a table was ready. We both had the battered haddock for £14.95. We were surprised that it does not come with mushy peas as is common practice elsewhere. They do offer them on the side for another £3.50. No thanks. Our dishes came out immediately so it seems like an assembly line approach but this is the dish they are known for so I suppose it works for them. However, while the fish was hot and crispy, our chips were room temperature and soggy. You can get better fish and chips elsewhere. read more

I have Celiac Disease and am constantly on the lookout for good and safe gluten free foods. I've had to sit back and watch all my friends eat fish and chips and never been a part of it. I finally found Bertie's Proper Fish and Chips and... wow. They're AMAZING. I asked all the questions about allergies, and they answered everything thoroughly and thoughtfully. Clearly they're very educated about this stuff. It came out in a take away box clearly marked all around it that it was gluten free (and there are other boxes and stickers that come out with it for other options). And when I tested my food, the staff wanted to learn more about how it worked!! The rest of the restaurants I've been to pale in comparison to the customer service I got here. If I could give it 100 stars I would. I cannot recommend this place more, especially if you have an allergy. read more

Gluten free fish and chips!! And they were delicious. Bertie's saved my husband and I late one night when we realized that restaurants in Scotland close the kitchen earlier than the official restaurant's closing time, and we had been to three restaurants already with no luck. Enter Berties! Staff was really courteous. Much bigger on the inside as well. Flaky fish and crispy fries really hit the spot and let my husband sample the local cuisine safely, as they have a dedicated fryer. Really satisfied. read more

Berties deserves its title for the nation's best fish and chips --seriously! Despite being located along the touristy Victoria Street, you're welcomed to a huge open-space upstairs. The restaurant has an open kitchen for an airy feel with ample lighting and clean decor. It has a great atmosphere for a casual sit-down restaurant. The main reason you come here should be for the fish and chips, of course. But let me warn you that the fish and chips come in humongous portions here. I am so glad that my flatmate and I decided to share instead. Between the two of us, we ordered the Battered Cod and Chips (£12.95), single Vegetarian Haggis (£5.50), and side of Onion Rings (£3.00). Everything was delicious and came in hefty portions. We both really enjoyed the haggis, which was fried as well and came with a beetroot ketchup that paired perfectly. The battered cod was flaky and fresh with the crispy batter covering outside. Because everything we ordered was battered and fried, it was a bit overwhelming towards the end. For future me (or yourself if you don't want to be overwhelmed by all the fried food), I'd opt for the breaded haddock instead of battered. Also, share a few different entrees as one entire fish and chip order by yourself can be quite unbearable. Otherwise, everything was delicious here. Definitely come for the fish and chips that really live up to the hype! read more

We dined on a busy Friday night. We showed up about a half hour early for a reservation. We were asked to wait at the bar, as we were getting our drinks our table was ready. Although the restaurant was packed, it was still a good place to have dinner, and the service was on point. The food was delicious. Definitely a place you want to visit while in Edinburgh for fish and chips! Make sure to book reservation online ahead of time. read more
