We had a very nice lunch here. We got here about 11:45 AM and like 20 minutes later the place was absolutely jammed so if you don't wanna wait get here a little before noon at the latest. My husband had their fish and chips and I had their English meat pie, which was quite good. The service was spot on and they only take tap so cash won't work here. The place is large enough to handle a fair amount of people and although it's a bit of a tourist trap it was a nice stop for lunch. A little pricey, but overall, we enjoyed our lunch and had fantastic service.
Loved it. Went to scotland for a short trip. And I had to know about the raving on fish & chips. Bertie's was conveniently located around victoria st, and it was a huge place with 2 floors. We ordered a salad and the classic fish & chips for a snack. The portion of the fish was huge! Chips were great. Loved that they put us in a good seat with a view.
Fun looking place in the main touristy area of Edinburgh Old Town! I opted with the walk up take away option was was very convenient as you can get things ala cart. The Battered haddock was a bit on the dry side but had good batter. Grilled sausages were nice snappy with sort of a fruity schmear for dipping. The fried calamari was a little on the soggy side but had good flavor. I think I'll opt for the in dining experience next time!
We decided to have fish & chips for our first night in Edinburgh. Why not have some proper ones? I actually bookmarked this place because of the awesome menu items. It also happens to be on the most touristy street in the city. But don't let that scare you off. The battered fish is very good here. It was the twice-cooked chips that didn't live up to the hype. I think the sweet potato fries would have been a better choice. Their World Famous Battered Haddock is the way to go here. It's what they are known for. We loved the light & crispy batter. The haddock was white & tender. That was the high point of our meal. The chips were hard and lukewarm. We didn't say anything because there was no way we'd be able to eat them all even if they brought out a fresher batch. It's just a side item that we didn't need anyway. I'd usually go for mushy peas or onion rings, but I think it would have been an extra charge to get them. We did share a Deep Fried Mars Bar. It was a rich & delicious treat. A great sweet ending to a very nice meal. The décor and atmosphere is wonderful here. There's a big red bow above the entrance with a takeaway counter at the ground level. You'll see the Christmas tree on the second level as you're heading up to the restaurant. The bar & restaurant on the next 2 floors are bright & spacious with lots of seating options. The service was great as well. Noah made it a nice experience. We would definitely visit again if ever in Edinburgh.
This place offers a silly amount of dishes/drinks, but I loved all of them! Huge seating area (will never have to wait for a table) and fish and chips were very good and unique if you like a more Smokey flavor. Also thought we'd try the haggis spring rolls and macaroni cheese croquettes which were both great. Maybe next time I'll try the fried mars bar
Looking for fish and chips and Berthies comes up again and again. It was located in the old town and on a busy tourist street. So I was skeptical at first. I was seated promptly despite no reservations. Ordered their famous battered fish. Haddock is used instead of cod. Batter was light and crispy. Fries/chips were ok. Served with tartar but table has ketchup, vinegar etc. staff were friendly and quick. Take note that there is auto service charge added. Price is reasonable given location. Locations is convenient when exploring the old town and in need of a nice respite from the cold (I was here in January )
The fish and chips here are delicious and the batter is airy and super crispy!! Truly recommend coming here. Also beware the portion is huge lol. We also ordered the onions rings and they were soo good!!! People were nice our beer took a while to come out but the waiter apologized and brought it out shortly after that.
I have never had a fish flake like this. It was so mild in flavor, crunchy exterior, not a heavy dense batter that ruins your day from being so strong. It was just light, airy, and truly magnificent. I think about this often. The fries TASTED golden. Dipped in the sauces- both the fish and chips were amazing! Will return when I go back to Edinburgh. Our waiter was kind and gave his recommendations as well! (Also me and my friend split this and it was plenty)

Single traveler. This is a very warm, welcoming place. I did not love that they put me upstairs near the curtain where the staff stops to eat, but other than that I really enjoyed the atmosphere and the food. Service was good, the fish and chips dish was quite nice and I'm sorry I did not buy a tee shirt because Berties Proper seems like a place you need to be at least once when you're in Edinburgh. It was recommended to me by two different hotels in the area and I think they knew it would be a comfortable, fun atmosphere for me eating alone.
I made reservations after hearing my tour guide recommend it and seeing it the fish and chips are cooked in tallow. So grateful I made reservations as it was quite busy and a good crowd waiting for a spot. Service was kind and friendly. Our food came out quickly. The fish and chips were delightful. The fish was crispy and flavorful. The mushy pea side can be shared by two, a good complement to the fries. I appreciate seeing on the chalkboard where the ingredients came from, largely regionally. Don't let the tourist area of Victoria Street deter you, it's quite the legitimate spot!
Absolutely wonderful Scottish dining experience! The fish and chips were excellent, nice and flaky, add some malt vinegar and mayonnaise for the chips, just fantastic. The restaurant is right in the heart of Edinburgh on a cobblestone street, really sets the mood. Group of (11) of us, seated and served with a smile. Our waitress was a joy!

Stopped in without a reservation and they were able to get us a table for two within 10 minutes. The dining area was very aesthetically pleasing, the decor was nice and there was also upstairs seating. The staff were all very friendly, our server and the service was great. The menu was simple, there was some variety. I ordered the daily soup, mint + pea and the fish tacos. My colleague ordered the burger with sweet potato fries. We both enjoyed our meals--the fish tacos were EXCELLENT! As much as I continue to try dishes with peas, they aren't my favorite, but the soup was made well. Everything tasted very fresh! The fish and chips around us looked great, I just wasn't hungry enough for that main dish. There were a few other things on the menu I'd enjoy trying, when in town I'd recommend stopping by! read more

In what could've been a tourist-y nightmare, Bertie's avoided those pitfalls with great service and a great product. We entered and were told we'd be facing a 10-minute wait, which we decided to do at the bar. There, we ordered two pints but before they could be delivered, our table was ready. The beers were seamlessly transferred to our server, and showed up not long after we ordered our food. We started with the Fish Pakora, small battered fish bites with a sweet sauce for dipping. They were tasty and easy to enjoy. That was followed with the battered haddock on a giant bed of chips. Again, the fish was cooked perfectly, the batter light and crispy, with a dill-forward tartare sauce and a brown sauce and malt vinegar already on the table. Staff was quick and attentive, and the tables and toilets were clean -- no small feat in a space with constant turnover. read more

I'm not sure we would return to Berties, but that shouldn't stop you from visiting at least once during your trip to Edinburgh. The portions are generous and the service was relatively quick for a busy Saturday afternoon. What made it a 4 vs a 3 star review were the starters we tried- onion rings and the macaroni cheese croquettes. They were delicious and unique. To be fair, we wanted our first meal in town to be fish and chips, even though we've always thought the dish is bland. So while this type of food isn't our cup of tea, it was still a nice meal with our only regret being not having tried their mocktails, which weren't that much more expensive than soda. read more

Very friendly staff, good drinks, and decent fish and chips! I especially love that they offer really good gluten-free fish and chips! Can be hard to find and they do it right here. The regular fish and chips were decent, but the gluten-free version was the real standout. Great spot overall! read more

Amazing food, service, and ambiance! We are on a trip from the United States and we're looking forward to trying authentic fish and chips and these did not disappoint!!! Everything tasted fresh and delicious. Highly recommend! read more
Bertie's definitely has the feel of a chain, but it was spacious and comfortable when we were there. Service was excellent and fast- this was maybe the quickest restaurant trip I've ever had, simply because they were so on top of things. I had an espresso martini, which was mostly foam. It was delicious, but having less drink than foam was a little disappointing. The fish and chips, however, was not disappointing. There was way more than I could eat, but I wished I could keep eating because of how good it was! read more

Berties Proper Fish & Chips is a very popular place right on Victoria Street. If you go during the dinner service, like we did, you have the choice of placing a take-out order on the first floor, or you wait in the line on the second floor just to get in the door. Then its a good 20-30 minute wait at the bar to get a table. Once you are seated, the service is excellent and fast! We each ordered the famous battered fish & chips, the servings were so huge we could have shared one as neither of us could finish our meal! It was a hot, crispy coating on the outside and fresh, flaky fish on the inside. The chips were ok, a bit soggy. The specialty vanilla whisky drinks were served up in cute soda fashion style, but way too sweet to even taste the whisky. If you want the tourist experience, try Berties. But there are many fish & chip options in the city, try more than one! read more
We ate at their other restaurant (Vittoria Italian) and were very impressed, so we tried this fish and chips restaurant. I'm not used to servers asking about allergies, but it's a nice touch. We were seated immediately upstairs. Finlay was our server and did an excellent job. I love ginger ale. I ordered steak pie with peas and mashed potatoes and gravy. It was amazingly delicious! My husband loved their battered haddock and chips. We had yummy sticky toffee pudding and a chocolate brownie sundae for dessert. It was a great experience. Great location for a stay on Grassmarket. There is a separate takeaway counter from dining, so I can't speak to the ambiance of the dining area (upstairs) or service there, but the service at the takeaway counter (street level) was excellent. This was my first time trying haggis...I got an order of the haggis spring rolls...and they were crispy and delicious! They came with a sauce that was almost a sweet 'n sour sauce but it had a bit of a kick. They were honestly good on their own but the sauce was good on the m, too. The fish and chips, which is what prompted us to stop in, taste as good as they look/smell! You get a huge haddock filet (a change for me; I'm accustomed to fish and chips being cod, but the haddock was battered and seasoned well and it was delicious! Their chips remind me of frites from living in Europe for many years...thick cut and twice fried. The BEST way to make them, IMO, and the order was enormous!we truly could have shared an order. Ate lunch at Berties Proper Fish & Chips for the first time as my last meal out on a 17-day heritage travel trip to Scotland in July 2019. I arrived a little after noon on Friday 19 July 2019, somewhere towards the beginning of the lunch rush with traffic picking up as I ate. As a solo traveler, I got a small table all to myself. I went with the baked cod with lemon and herb butter served with tartar sauce, twice cooked chips, pickled onions, and garden peas. The peas were juicy and popped in my mouth and the pickled onions were perfect orbs and not too briny in flavor. The fish was flaky, lemon and herb butter tastable, and tartar sauce tangy. Super popular fish & chips spot in Edinburgh - make reservations! For two, we got the Battered haddock, Grilled smoked sausage, and the sticky toffee pudding for dessert. The battered haddock didn't have the fresh out of the fryer feel but it was still good, the grilled smoked sausage had an incredible smokiness to it, and 10/10 for the sticky toffee pudding. Ambiance wise it feels like a super gimmicky restaurant but it was still a great experience! read more

Came in for a late meal and enjoyed the place. Not the typical pub experience which was actually a nice change for this evening. We were referred here by a local guide for the fish and chips. This day they used haddock which was very good. Fish was not greasy. Service was good and place was very clean. I'd go back. read more

Fish and chips!! I haven't had in England so can't compare. I have had some good ones in the states but let's check it out. So the traditional haddock battered and fried. With twice fried frites. Oh wow!! Was worth it. Lots of tourists. But this was so good. Go for the fish and chips. And now trying the fried mars bar and sticky toffee pudding. Nom nom. Service could have been better but pretty busy. Had to get up and ask for water twice. Cool ambiance but too touristy. The food was good and the experience was good. Would recommend. read more
This was the first fish and chips in the UK I've had. I usually eat fish and chips with cod but they had haddock and I wanted to try it out. It was pretty good but I think I'd prefer cod over haddock. Still overall food was good. My wife got a steak pie and it was very good. The servers are very friendly and also helpful when asking for their recommendation. Was pretty busy and had to only wait 10 min for a table of 3. read more

While walking around Edinburgh for the day we decided to spontaneously stop in Berties for lunch. We went in with zero expectations and it wasnt one of the restaurants we had preplanned our knew about before our holiday in the city. Ultimately we were pleasantly surprised by how good it was. They have plenty of seating which was nice to be able to be seated right away after all the walking around we had been doing. For what seems like a tourist trap, their Fish and Chips was actually one of the best of our trip. read more

Wow. We stopped here after a visit to the castle because I needed to try some UK fish n chips before we ended our trip. My husband originally was not hungry, so I ordered the original style for myself. Of course when it came, I knew he couldn't resist. I sat there eating the fish and he asked me how it was, I replied possibly one of the best. The fish was cooked yet not dry, perfect. It was a large filet, and I was impressed. The outside was the best batter I've had. Not too thick, not too oily, and the PERFECT crunch. I'm used to mass produced tartar sauce in the states, and this was very good. My husband tried it and eventually had a few more bites because it was so good. We finished it off with their double fried fries. I would order this again and again. Inside was cute and I enjoyed the layout and decor. Comfortable seating. The service was also wonderful. We were greeted by a nice gentleman, and even caught him on the way out for some questions which he kindly assisted us. The server came over quickly for our order. Overall, if you're looking for a great fish n chips place, you have to try Bertie's. read more
Berties is the best Fish & Chips joint in Edinburgh for sure! If there is one restaurant you go to in this beautiful city, make it this one for their great service and menu. The fish is fried perfectly. The fries are crispy and delicious. Get a local brew to go with it and you're in for a very satisfying meal. Don't forget to try the mushy peas also! read more

If you want big portions, come here. Other than that. Don't. Monday night. We had a 5 minute wait. The service was good. Everyone was friendly and attentive. Food? What. The? Let's start out with the appetizer. The calamari. Zero flavor. Lightly battered which was nice, but no seasoning. Fish and chips? Ever eaten at Long John Silvers? Welp. Had to DRENCH everything in vinegar for any type of flavor. And the steak pie. Half of it was inedible. Super hard crust. Seems like a huge tourist trap. read more

We walked here from the Waterloo area looking forward to fish and chips. The fish was fair and mostly tasteless with much batter. I'm comparing this to English style fish and chips In Brighton, England and from a pub in Brooklyn, NY. The chips were good -- well prepared and not greasy. My husband tried the haggis and scotched egg. He was just okay with the haggis -- it was fresh tasting not much flavor. The fried mars bar was uneventful. It didn't seem mesh well and wasn't creamy. I spent a total of two weeks between Edinburgh and London seeking the best fish & chips. Of all the ones I went to, Bertie's Proper's was my favorite. I ordered the haddock. The batter ended up being the right mix of flaky and crunchy with the nicely tender fish in the inside. I also discovered my love for sticky toffee pudding during my visit abroad, and this one is also delicious. The service was awkward at first; it seemed like no one was assigned to my table to where I had to actually ask the bartender to go find someone. But once things got rolling, I had no issues. My server was friendly with just the right amount of attention. I recommend this restaurant if you're also looking for a well-made fish & chips! read more

For a touristy spot Bertie's does not disappoint. We got seated right away on a Thursday night. Pretty busy place for 8pm! We both ordered the battered haddock that came with the chips or (fries if you're American) and I also got a side of onion rings. Hard to mess up fried food but this was one of the best fish and chips Ive had in the UK. The haggis egg roll was very interesting not my cup of tea but it wasn't bad. Best sticky toffee pudding Ive had. Service was fast and price was reasonable for a tourist spot. All in all 5 stars. read more

Visited Edinburgh during the Military Tattoo and chanced a visit here. The place was packed but the service was quick to a large extent, pretty quick moving crowd I'd say. We ordered their classic fish and chips which was the most popular battered haddock and chips. Thankfully we ordered just one portion to share cos phew! Was the portion size huge. Having lived in the UK for a while I'd say I'm not a huge fan of fish and chips but the condiments on the table - tartar sauce made it pretty good. And ofcourse, as long as you have them hot and with beer or something soda-ish you'll enjoy it. If it goes cold or you don't have anything bubbly to wash it down, boy it's gonna seem too oily to keep it down. Still not a huge fan of fish and chips but this was pretty decent with the tartar. read more

Wanted Fish & Chips-this was a recommended restaurant. It was a great choice. The hubby and I both ordered the BATTERED HADDOCK served with twice cooked chips and tartare sauce. The batter covering the fish was flaky and quiet delicious. I tried the Edinburg Chippy Sauce which is a form of vinegar sauce. Yum. The fries were plentiful and cooked just right. I couldn't eat all of my chips but the hubby finished his and got dessert-STICKY TOFFEE PUDDING. He said I had to sample it so I could share it with you. I would consider it more of a cake than a pudding. It was scrumptious-very moist and the toffee sauce was like the cherry on top. Next time I'm getting my own pudding. Our server was Charlotte. She was very sweet and friendly. My husband wanted to adopt her. (We have three sons.) When you go in ask for her and tell her Tom and Kathy sent you. read more
