Best coffee & always busy .... OMG ! Try fresh juice .... Delicious !

Bertoni is a Balmain institution. Locals stream in and out, everyone known by name. And as new cafes continue to pop up on Darling St, it seems that Bertoni is working hard to keep its stronghold on Balmainers. The back shelves of the cafe are lined with Bertoni Cookbooks, pasta sauces and coffee beans, all emblazoned with "I Only Eat Bertoni" in an assertive red font. Any spare space is filled with Bertoni branded olive oils and balsamic vinegars, bringing home (quite literally) Bertoni's local and loyal branding. Lunch at Bertoni was a confusing experience for me, as I felt like I should have liked it more than I did. I ordered the chicken schnitzel from their cabinet of food ($7 or $10 with side). The schnitzel was warmed in a way that meant the crumbs were soggy and the chicken itself, whilst tasty, was quite dry. What's more, both the schnitzel and the side salad came served in plastic take-away containers. Whilst I'm not against replacing stock-standard white plates for something less conventional, eating schnitzel out of chinese containers aint easy. This might sound like a finicky whinge, but there's a reason we eat off plates, not boxes. What's more, serving everything in plastic boxes doesn't make for a particularly environmentally friendly workplace. And yet, there was lots that I did like about Bertoni. There was a lot of variety in their Italian lunch menu, offering toasted sandwiches, paninis and pastas (including stuffed capsicum and spinach and ricotta cannelloni). Their pork and veal meatballs ($10) are somewhat of a local legend and they offer a range of pretty good looking salads. Their prices are pretty good too and between 11.30am and 2pm weekdays, they untoasted paninis, small salads and small pastas are only $5, which is a great way of maintaining a steady lunch crowd. Bertoni won points from my boyfriend, selling Zuccherati, long cylindrical doghnuts filled with vanilla custard ($4.50), potentially meaning no more weekly trips to Haberfield bakeries.

A cute and trendy, much needed and well deserved Italian restaurant establishment in Balmain. Every local and their dog is here; coffee is king here, although for me their latte is a bit on the milky side. Maybe a bit overrated; although a small, chic and trendy locale. Love their cookies though, and their coffee (despite the milk) is still of an exceptional and terrific quality. Maybe a little less milk and more of a coffee taste, and then arguably this establishment would probably be nominated for the best latte award in Sydney. Not quite made it to my 'the best latte in Sydney' list if I was to write an article of this nature. If they stick by this simple rule; they could easily outdo and outshine Bill and Toni's in stanley Street on the coffee making front. Otherwise pretty good. A word of warning: this establishment does get busy, and yes I mean quite super busy; yet the service and greetings received by the staff members is fairly consistent, and that is an exceptional thing. This is to this establishments credit. Just work on their baristas and the coffee a little bit more in terms of coffee making technique, and once mastered the world could be their oyster.

Really bad for breakfast. If this is the best they can prepare is better they don't offer breakfast at all.

A beautiful rich roast of arabica and robusta blended coffee beans and a delightfully casual Italian feel.

The panini's at Bertoni are Sydney's best kept secret. Incredible service and the city's best sandwiches.

Great coffee, friendly service and a very nice bacon and egg roll to top it off (they even have HP sauce)

as far as coffees go, too expensive. I felt they should be wearing balaclavas as they took my money. not going back even for the Cannoli.

My friends took me here on my last day in Sydney, and it was the perfect farewell brunch!…read more There was a festive menu at the time that we dined, and it was great! 3 courses for $40AUD (or 2 courses for $35AUD), you know I had to get the 3 courses! For Starters, I got the Ora King Smoked Salmon Pate. For my Mains, I got Primavera Ravioli. For dessert, I got the Jamie's Black Forest Panna Cotta. Everything was soooo good! The ambiance was chic & cute, and the server was great! I honestly felt like I was back in the US for some reason!

My second and most recent visit helped extinguish that memory. Our waitress was very lively and sweet. She gave us plenty of time to look over our menus and made solid recommendations. I ordered the Spaghetti Alla Norma and it was pretty tasty. I also sampled some of the polenta chips which were surprisingly good. We opted to get dessert elsewhere but overall the food was pretty good. I'd like this place more if the prices were a little lower and they had more basic pastas available. I'm not a fan of seafood or mushrooms and can't handle spicy so I felt a little limited...although the pumpkin ravioli was tempting. Next time!

Fratelli Parlamento…read more What's available? Antipasto. Pasta. Pizza. Salads. Wine. Wine. Wine. Desserts. No specials. Great CBD location. On Macquarie Street next door to the Land & Environment Court and across the road from the NSW Parliament. When you get to the Macquarie Street entrance walk down the stairs. You will be greeted by a friendly maître d and a similar layout to its Italian brother on Bridge Street. There is a bar and restaurant (Café Sopra) which offers delicious meals made with fresh ingredients. No fresh produce available at this Fratelli's. The restaurant was buzzing with suits. Which was to be expected due to its central business location! Loved the green chesterfield style seating and dim lighting. The service was great with our waiter being very attentive even with the a full restaurant. Could not fault our visit. Will be coming back here again and again.

To start we got the zucchini fritters, burrata, and the cold meats plate. All very tasty. Then for mains i got the pork sausage pizza - i thought it was ok, hardly much pork on the pizza. I got to sample a few other pastas such as the lamb raguy and the polenta with mushrooms and gorgonzola - the polenta was very good! Lots of sauce and went really well with the polenta. For wine we tried the fratelli fresh pino grigio and it had more of a sharp after taste. Overall, I thought the food was good, I enjoyed all the entree's and the other mains except mine.
