It is an absolute shame that several people gave low ratings because of their experience with other aspects of the Honor Health practice. Wish folks would find the name of the Surgical Center and rate that center or their staff---NOT add it to Dr. Bertrand Kaper's review. He does NOT deserve to receive a low rating because of staff issues or scheduling issues out of his control! The Surgical Center deserves those low ratings--written separately! Dr. Kaper is a WONDERFUL, HIGHLY SKILLED SURGEON and deserves nothing less than the highest ratings. He came recommended to me by several individuals in and around Prescott, Arizona. I started out seeing a Banner Orthopedic surgeon for evaluation of bilateral knee pain. I immediately knew this Banner surgeon was not someone I felt comfortable performing two knee replacements on me. I then took the advise of others and made a visit to Dr. Kaper's office in Scottsdale (from Prescott). I felt an immediate sense of calm in his presence. With my knee MRI pulled up on a computer, he showed me and explained exactly what was wrong with my right knee (the first knee to be replaced). He made several recommendations. He wasn't pushing surgery but giving me all options available. I respected this as the Banner surgeon merely walked into the exam room and said, "You need both knees replaced." No other discuss. The BEST decision I made was to have Dr. Kaper replace both knees (2025 and 2026). My recoveries were unremarkable and I was pain free almost from day one! During my rehab and physical therapy I can't begin to count the number of people I met that had joint replacements done by Dr. Kaper. I've never hear one negative remark about him or his perceived skills from anyone who had surgeries done by him. Nothing but praise from so many others. He IS simply the BEST!!!! Dr. Kaper is an excellent surgeon. On my initial visit he was patient and answered all of my questions. I am now entering my 3rd week post-op and my recovery has been amazing. His PA's respond quickly to my questions on My Chart, and Dr. Kaper has also called when I had a question on the weekend. He has an excellent staff, all of whom are kind and return calls promptly. Dr Kaper was referred to me and highly recommended, however, unreturned msgs by Staff made it difficult to schedule an appointment. I recently received a return call from 9 days ago and then another call 10 days later from a different person. I have never met this Dr in my visits. I finally had an appointment to see Dr Kaper, but due to Funeral Services and his schedule running behind, I had to reschedule, the next available date, a month later! I've made a decision to end my anticipated procedure w/this Office and Transfer my Partial Or Full Knee Replacement to another Facility. read more

I only gave one star because I had to. My boyfriend is physically disabled, he has cerebral palsy, spina bifida, scoliosis, and hydrocephalus. He has had 47 surgeries in the 45 years he has been alive. He had fallen in August 2024, which cause the hip socket to break, leaving his hip "chronically dislocated". We went in to see Dr. Kaper to see about getting a total hip replacement, which he said he would do, but he had a stage 4 (healing) pressure ulcer on his bottom, and it needed to be healed before the surgery, due to the risk of infection. We went to see Dr. Kaper in April 2025 and that is when we were told about the wound needing to be gone. Fast forward to December 2025, we healed the wound COMPLETLY, and we made an appointment to get the surgery scheduled. We got a surgery date of February 3, 2026, and the day of surgery, we drove the 2 hours to the hospital, arrived at 830 AM, got back and prepped (shaved, wiped down, IV started, MEDS GIVEN). The surgery was scheduled at 1100AM, and the doctor came in at that time, and told my boyfriend that it was not a smart idea to do the total hip replacement but wanted to cut the ball off the femur and leave it that way. They argued for about 15 minutes; my boyfriend was against the other surgery and Dr. Kaper would not hear any reason or even listen to him. He walked away when my boyfriend was talking. The only good thing that came from it all was that the nurses were shocked that the doctor did that and they were very helpful with us and apologetic. read more

I had a left TKR in September and am scheduled for my right TKR in February. This office is pretty organized but it takes months to get in for an appointment and there is a fair amount of back and forth between the imaging center and his office. The staff are kind and responsive but seem to lack empathy about patient pain. I had a lot of pain after surgery and was told the meds "should be working." They weren't. My pain levels were well above what they and the surgery center told me to expect. I was given a muscle relaxer one week post op but I think it would have made a big difference to have had them on the first day. Dr. Kaper is kind and thorough. I was incredibly anxious on the morning of the surgery and he gave me a lovely pep talk to calm me. I think he is a very competent and highly skilled surgeon. The assisting staff at the surgery center (North Valley Surgery Center - I highly recommend this facility) had wonderful things to say about him and described the surgery as a "well practiced ballet." If you need knee surgery, I highly recommend Dr Kaper. read more

I have had three major surgeries on my left knee over the past 50 years with the most recent being a total knee revision performed by Dr. Kaper in October 2024. A prior surgery was done by a surgeon and hospital that have reputations as the best in the US. From my experience, however, Dr. Kaper and Honor Orthopedics are hands down the best in the US. I now have better range of motion in my knee than I have had over the past 50 years. My two prior surgeries were agonizingly painful. Dr. Kaper's was not. Dr. Kaper uses a device that pumps a non-narcotic pain medicine continually into the knee over a 5 day period of time. That, and his proscribed ice machine and surgical techniques, made my revision surgery pain moderate and not agonizing. Because of Dr. Kaper's skill and experience the revision surgery was performed quickly with very little bone loss. He is the best. His team is outstanding. Not the doctor but the process is out of control totally! Called for appt. Was told until review images would not be scheduled. Would call after review of available images was my understanding. Got a call to schedule - okay. When arrived did bring a disc of prior images - they had not seen any - so went online and looked at ones I brought. Was told by PA that I made the mistake - I was to send them the images. Oh well. Then went downhill further - was to have an MRI - of the left knee - referral was for the right knee. Referral was to go to local imaging where they could compare with my '21 images. Instead was sent to Phoenix (I live in Prescott) and not a sister entity to review priors anyway. Then after my call to correct - sent to right imaging center but without appropriate signature - sent back on the 10th - now the 15th - not sure I want to deal with them anymore if they cannot get an easy order done correctly. Sorry I darkened his door for a TKR! Kaper got into trouble even before the TKR began ..... by nicking a blood vessel .....while numbing the limb using a spinal approach. (An anesthesologist follows by delivering unconciousness, He/She is NOT responsible for the limb numbing.ONLY Kaper is responsible to numb the limb.) Apparently Kaper didn't notice what he had done & continued on to place the prosthesis. Post surgically the limb was wrapped with two canulas. One with a metered liquid anesthetic & another attached to a polar cube (with ice) to control swelling. The unattended nicked vein was also wrapped up in the several Ace bandages. After an overnite hospital stay, I was returned to my rehab facility with Kaper's instruction to staff there to not disturb the Ace bandages, an instruction they had a tough time dealing with. For 2 days they tried stuffing sponges & gauze but could not contain the active bleed. My primary care physician intervened & ordered an ambulance to the ER. (It was 10 PM) . The ER PA called Kaper at his part-time Scottsdale home for advice. The PA never returned to meet with me after talking with Kaper, a nurse took over at that point. So I don't know what was done to stave the bleed. (A common maneuver among medical staff when there has been a known snafu). It has now been MANY, MANY months. I should be able to walk without holding on to a cane or walker, but after many months of both pre & post op physical therapy I am unable. The TKR done by this man has been deemed a failure. I had both hips replaced in Illinois before I retired, bad installation with cobalt and chromium, and one of them squeaked. Then came Dr. Kaper after retirement. The hips he gave me were just like the ones God gave me, with no issues. Nuff said! Roger read more

I'm considering a THR with Dr. Kaper following a hip fracture 5 years ago and so far I have to say I've been very pleased with the care I've received from him as well as his office staff. I've been with his PA who took the time to review everything with me and then had a follow up with the NP who was equally as kind and efficient, explaining the options and benefits of alternatives leading to surgical intervention. Should things proceed to surgery itself, I'll be sure to include a follow up, but so far, so good! read more

Dr. Kaper performed my husbands medial compartment knee replacement and he had problems with it starting at month 3 post op. The most concerning aspect was the manner in which we were treated. Basically , Dr. Kaper said "the xrays look good, I don't know what to tell you." We were dismayed at his lack of concern and the fact that he didn't order any other diagnostics. We later visited anoTher proVider who discovered the new implant was not tracking coRrectly, causing my husbands incessant pain. Not at all happy with Dr. Kaper or his care. I don't know what the first two posts have to do with Dr. Kaper as he doesn't do hands or Urgent Care. He does knees, hips and shoulders only and these posts need to be removed as they don't pertain to Dr. Kaper. I had my first total knee replacement on June 11, 2018 by Dr. Kaper and it couldn't gone smoother! He started me on a regiment of vitamins an physical therapy and kept me on same throughout my surgery and afterwards for several months. It was a total breeze - and when comparing my healing updates with others who've had the same surgery by different surgeons, mine is SO much better! I would not hesitate to not only refer him to ANYONE who needs this surgery, but I will definitely use him to do my other knee when needed! Not ONE complaint! read more

Dr. Kaper Is a fantastic orthopedic surgeon. My first 2 surgeries were Meniscus surgery. He did such a wonderful job on my meniscus surgery. I did not need knee replacements for 5 to 6 years . In 2018 here place my right knee in September. Now my flexibility is awesome. My left knee was replaced December 2018 once again he did a wonderful job on replacing my knee. I have wonderful flexibility in my left knee I would never see another orthopedic surgeon ... Dr Kaper is the only orthopedic surgeon for me. Kathy read more

I had arthroscopic surgery done by a bad doctor last July. In desperation I contacted Dr Kaper. He came highly recommended. I had been in such pain for so many months. He did arthroscopic surgery on my knee a couple of weeks ago and I am in great shape. I'm still recovering but the pain is minimal. I am so grateful for his kindness and expertise. Dr. Kaper was highly recommended by several medical professionals and with great reluctance I had my shoulder replaced. All my concerns about how painful and how long it would take to resume normalcy were unfounded. Dr. Kaper was a skilled professional and my recovery was surprisingly quick and compared to my broken tibia several years ago it was very painless. He and his PA were great. The use of my shoulder was with in days better than the pain I had before the operation. I highly recommend Dr. Kaper and would not hesitate to use him again for my other shoulder, God forbid that day should ever arrive. read more

I had my first knee replacement at a nationally very well known medical institute.. I went through Hell.. the pain was excruciating ( worse than childbirth! ) and that terrible pain lasted for 2 weeks before I started to lessen... ice packs and opioids barely took the edge off of the horrific pain even though I powered through that terrible pain and pushed the PT twice a day for 2 weeks . four years later I had my second replacement from Dr. Kaper...what a difference! NIGHT AND DAY ! NONE of that excruciating pain! Two nights in the hospital .. no pain . .no swelling .. not even a Tylenol after day 4 ! the scar is 5 inches compared to 10 inches from the first surgery . It's been 3 months since my 2nd surgery and I am scheduled to have the original replacement re-done in a couple weeks... ( it's very unstable ) plus Dr. Kaper will replace it with non-nickle hardware . I would tell anyone who needs knee replacement to go to Dr. Kaper ! He walks on water ! Such a difference between what the " big institute" did and what he does . I'm looking at 2 days in the hospital and then home by myself... no problem ! I LOVE Dr. Kaper ( a very nice man too !) I had an appointment regarding my right knee with Dr. Kaper on June 29th at 4:00 pm. I scheduled that appointment in May, over the phone with his office team, who sent me for an x-ray in preparation for the appointment. I arrived before 4:00 and was told that they had no record of my appointment. However, they had all the notes regarding my Right knee, which I gave to the receptionist when I made my call, and they had my x-ray results, which they would not share with me over the phone. No one apologized for the mistake. Instead, staff just smiled at me, and said the office manager would have to approve fitting me in. Which she did 15 minutes later. I was roomed and my vitals done and then the waiting began. Half way thru my 1 hour and 45 minute wait, I approached staff and asked when I would be seen. I was told that other people were waiting ahead of me and I would be seen after them. No one bothered to check and see how long I actually had to wait. After 1.45 hours, I did not feel I should have to wait any longer. No med tech, PA or doctor came in during my 1.45 hour wait, to apologize or give me an update on how long I would sit there. No one seemed to care. As I was leaving, I told the front office manager that I was angry with how my appointment was handled. In return, I was told Dr. Kaper was behind due to staff from Honor Health dropping by earlier. So is this how it goes? Do patients merely wait longer every time someone drops in and then not be told appointments are running late? Given the large number of Orthopods in Scottsdale and Phoenix available to choose from, you would think patient care and feedback would be of utmost importance. Obviously Dr. Kaper could care less. He just lost a loyal, repeat patient (he did my Left knee 4 years ago. I won't be recommending him to anyone. read more

Dr Kaper did a full knee replacement on me Feb 2019. It was outpatient surgery performed in Prescott. Everything went as planned and it was a relief to be home in my bed on the same day. A PT and nurse followed up with me the next day and every couple of days for a few weeks. I have had overnight stays in the hospital before and it is never restful so I'm thrilled that I was able to choose to have this surgery as an outpatient!! My knee has healed perfectly and I am soooo glad I had the surgery and was lucky enough to have had Dr Kaper as my surgeon. Not only a superb surgeon but a genuinely nice guy!! Dad had his hip replacement done. Dr. Kaper made him feel as though everything was going to work out perfectly. It had been a pretty bad 6 months in which the broken hip had failed to repair using pins. Finding Dr. Kaper to fix this disaster probably saved my Dad's health and happiness. He not only replaced the hip, he removed the other doctor's pins, and lengthened Dad's leg that had shrunk from his inability to use it. He treated Dad with dignity and respect and gave him the confidence to know he would walk again. The surgery was fast and precise. The recovery at Scottsdale Healthcare Thompson Peak hospital was easy and comfortable. Dr. Kaper turned things around for our family. read more

I have had a total knee replacement on 4/18/2016 and I have been in pain ever since. Other than acting like it was my fault, Dr Kaper has not offer any real type of solution other than giving me a bottle of pain killers. First I told it should heal in 3 or 4 months then I was told it could take a year. It has been 1 year and almost 8 months and it still keeps me up at night and hurts throughout the day. Going to see another doctor to see if he fix whatever went wrong in this operation. Very disappointed in myself. Just because he does a lot of surgeries does not make him good. Maaco auto body and paint does a lot paint jobs but that does not make them a custom paint shop. My advice is to shop around! read more

Dr. Kaper came HIGHLY recommended by an orthopedic nurse I know. I called 5 weeks ago and left a detailed message for them to check on insurance and if he'd look at my knee due to lymphadema. A WEEK later I got a call back from the office and said it was all good, Insurance was in network, and an appointment was made a full MONTH down the road. Today....24 hours before my appoint with the good doctor, I came home to a message saying they were not going to see me as they had just ran my medicare and found out they did NOT take my plan! FIVE WEEKS in pain, FIVE WEEKS waiting for some relief from my torn up knee, only to get "geee, i'm SOOOOOOOOOOO sorry"!! Really!!! I was told FIVE weeks ago it was all OK.!! This just stinks but is so typical of todays employees. So now, I have to start all over again, making calls, waiting and hoping to find a phone person that actually has a clue!! This is totally unexceptionable! There are some clueless phone staff that need DIFFERENT JOBS!! Like at Burger King!! read more

Although he is a good technician, he did not respond to phone calls and the pharmacist said he gave me one of the mildest painkillers. I had a total knee and was in excruciating pain. He never corrected the pain medicine. read more
