I'd give it a 3.5 start but will round up do to it being locally owned. I wanted delivery on a weekday. I scoured for a new Chinese spot (since my favorite doesn't actually deliver). I came across Best China that does in-house delivery. Perfect. Plus, I could order online. We ordered a plethora of appetizers. (The rangoons were a fam fav.) As well as the sweet and sour chicken. (Another hit, especially with the kiddos.) The only thing I will say that we would never order again would be the dumplings. You can order online, which I love. I did so and got to choose when I wanted it delivered. I entered my credit card information... but for whatever reason it didn't register that I wanted to pay that way and I ended up having to pay cash. (Don't get me wrong, I like that they have that option for people-- just wasn't expecting it at the time.) Overall, this is a solid spot on the East side of Iowa City. This spot has been serving up tasty dishes for over a decade now-- that has to count for something! If you want to try something new, Best China is a great option. read more

There are a lot of Chinese restaurants of similar price and menu throughout the Iowa City area, but this is the best for lunch. Best China does not charge you an extra fee should you not exceed a specific dollar amount when using a card. A Crab Rangoon is included as part of the lunch. They're also sensitive to the working clientele, and had the food ready quickly (under 10 minutes ) with whole meal taking 25 minutes. I left feeling full, happy, and relaxed. I made it back to the office quickly and ready to have a good afternoon. If I didn't normally bring my lunch I would be here more often. Next time: the snap peas that came with my lunch were bursting with flavor. Should I return, I will definitely find a dish that highlights that ingredient or perhaps I will just ask for extra. I will be back again, hopefully sooner than later. read more

This is my favorite carry out Chinese, their Shrimp with Chinese vegetables Szechuan style (spicy) is delicious. It also has large shrimp which most places have the small ones. Before ownership changed recently (Spring 2022), this was undoubtedly our favorite Chinese restaurant in the area. We encouraged others to try it and would even go out of our way to go there. No more. Ownership has changed. Recipes are different (not in a good way). It is cluttered and less clean than in the past. I'll never understand why someone takes over an obviously successful restaurant and feels obligated to change the very things that made them so popular. There are many other choices in the Iowa City/Coralville area. I wish them well, but we will not be back. read more

If you're thinking about ordering here, I recommend to get carry out. The roast pork mei fun, fried dumplings, and crab rangoons are the best from here. What I don't recommend is eating in and the egg rolls are terrible. My husband gets the Americanized Chinese food- the mongolian beef and general tso's chicken- and he feels its the best he's had around. As for the previous comments about how dirty the place is- if you've ever been to an authentic Chinese restaurant with linoleum floors, like in any Chinatown across the US, the lack of cleanliness of this place shouldn't surprise you. I say as long you don't get sick, then it's safe/clean enough. I would've given more stars if I didn't just get my food, did the calculations, and realize they slightly overcharged me. Also, they are very brief on the phone- they don't tell you how long or how much you owe. Needless to say, this is the only place I've consistently ordered Chinese food from in the past 3 years, outside of the local grocery store (HyVee). This is my favorite. What can I say? Nice portions, fresh, hot, delicious. Talk about eye candy. Chinese food should make your mouth water with the vibrant colors and Best China never fails in the regard. Their triple delight entree is a true delight! The staff is nice and the food is great. Excellent Chinese fast food! For $4.00 you receive 8 delicious and flavorful crabmeat rangoons with sweet and sour sauce to dip them in. I love their shrimp fried rice and chicken fried rice. Tons of little shrimp and very filling. Family ran so it's always the mom or daughter at the register and dad cooking. Super quick in preparing my meal. Clean restaurant if you are eating in. Good food but awful customer service ruins the experience. Twice I've ordered online and instead of receiving my order with fried rice after picking it up I realized they gave me steamed rice by mistake. I didn't complain the first time. The second time I called and asked to be credited back for just the rice which they said they wouldn't do. The only option they gave me was to drive 20 minutes back to switch it for fried rice. I didn't think this was fair since they could clearly see on my account this was the second time they had made the mistake and the least they could do it credit it back. They blamed it on me for not writing that I wanted fried rice in the special instructions section of the online page...which is ridiculous because the meal I ordered says it is is served with pork fried rice... read more

If you want chinese take-out/deliver this is my favorite place. The price is right and the food is good. Unless you call during a dinner rush they are really fast with their delivery- I clocked them at 19 minutes from the moment I hung up the phone (the pizza place about 2 blocks away from them can never get here in under 45 min). My husband loves the boneless ribs (asian style/chewy) and we get the sweet and sour chicken or shrimp which is also really good. I love their fried/steamed dumplings (the sauce is awesome) and of course their crab rangoons are really good. All their lunch menu options are right about 5 bucks which makes them priced right and if you call when you leave work it'll be ready by the time you get there to pick it up. Best China is the BEST New-York style Chinese food I've had in the Midwest, period, and I've been all around Chicago and half the world looking for it. Ordered in last night and it was prompt and extremely delicious. The dumpling sauce is exactly right - sweet, soy, scallions - and the dumplings were deliciously constructed. Also got the Yang Chow fried rice - GET IT. Best fried rice in the midwest. And lastly hot and spicy beef, which was just right in terms of spicy and the beef was good quality and not chewy. This is pretty much the same as all the other take-out chinese places (Taste of China, China Star, etc) except for two things. They have a CLEAN eat-in area and they have really good Moo Goo Gai Pan with a nice LIGHT (not greasy, heavy or brown) sauce. Also really fast delivery (one of the few that does deliver). read more

Iowa City has a number of Chinese restaurants and they are mostly disappointing--Best China is better than the bunch. They have the usual menu, but the flavor is a cut above the rest. They have excellent vegetable lo mein (better than Taste of China, which was our previous favorite). I like their mongolian chicken and kung pao chicken, my hisband likes their hot and sour soup. Called in for take-out and I am nothing short of pleased with this joint! I ordered hot and sour soup and crab rangoons. I'm usually skeptical of Chinese restaurants that have the backlit faded menu boards- the food quality can be unpredictable. HOWEVER! The hot and sour soup was made pretty perfectly- just the right consistency and ratio of veggies/meat/mushrooms. The crab rangoons were nothing short of fab- perfectly cooked, no fishy crab taste, I don't know what they put in there but it is scrumptious. Incredible rude. I ordered a small chicken and broccoli with a extra small rice and a can of mouth and dew. During this call they switched people I was talking to 3 times. They send a large chichen and broccoli with mushrooms and no mouth and dew. I called to resolve this issue and instead I got yelled at on the phone for almost 10 minutes before they hung hung up on me (they wouldn't answer when I called back) refused to bring me new food and refused to refund me. We got delivery and they didn't bring half of the order and this last time we decided to get pick up-since delivery didn't go so hot. Every time I've gotten best china it was really good. I think they have a really good lunch deal where u can get fried/steam rice and a entry. I'm a person who loves buffet and would dominate it but the portion best china gives you is a fulfilling amount. Dinner can get pricey of course since it's dinner but I recommend lunch. None of the places I grew up had much of a takeout culture, so the fact that you can get Chinese delivered to you after 9pm is still novel to me (even though this is a standard service in most parts of America and especially in a college town like Iowa City). It just never occurs to me get food delivered. I don't know if my good impression of best China has to do with being so super excited to have their fairly standard beef w broccoli and some very standard pork egg rolls magically appearing on the front doorstep after an evening out, but I'll go ahead and give it a solid recommendation. They change the price on you so when they show up if you paid with a card it's between $3-$5 more then it should be. Food isn't that great. The egg rolls have no meat or shrimp in them and are essentially all cabbage. They also clearly haven't changed their frying oil recently. Then their delivery driver never fail gets lost and says he is there and is clearly not so by the time he gets there your food is cold. read more

So don't eat here they can not take a simple order and when you dare to correct them they charge you for changing your order they of course charge you for your new meal and then they charge you for other ridiculous things no way a meal for two people in a Chinese place for lunch should cost forty dollars I was not pleased with this and we will never go back here again. It was over priced and I have had better tasting water . The food had no flavor or texture and I paid an arm and a leg for it. Perhaps they should teach their employees how to take an order and correctly because she was nice enough to repeat it back to me but I am befuddled because she still made the wrong thing. We had the Boneless Chicken. That was a mistake. Greasy fried chicken breast with thick dough over minimal vegetables at the bottom. We also had Seafood Delight. Was OK. No taste. They charge $1 extra for fried rice over steamed rice. Fried rice is extra yellow and too much grease. This is my first visit. I am sure they have some other entre that we might like. They also have ribs which is an American dish. May be they need to simplify their menu and stick to chinese food with the an eye for healthy food. Drop the deep fry crap and reduce the salt intake. Best lunch deal in town! They are fast and usually have my meal to me in 5 minutes. It's not too crowded so me and my lunch buddies can have conversation with no issues. Since the food is ready so quickly, there's plenty of time to talk and eat during our lunch hour. Just a perfect atmosphere to have casual meetings. Staff there is always courteous and patient with my indecisiveness at times. I also love how the meat platters aren't overloaded with vegetables. Exactly how I like it! :) read more

This place was absolutely terrible. Chinese food is my favorite kind of food and I have been eating it all my life from a variety of different places. Out of all the places I have ever gone to this was the worst. I ordered the chow mein, my favorite dish to get from places, and it did not come with any noodles like it was supposed to. I called and asked why i didnt get noodles and the woman on the phone stumbled for a moment and then said the crispy chips that comes with every dish was supposed to be the crispy noodles. I told her that I know thats not the case because my girlfriend ordered from their last week and just got egg drop soup and the same exact crispy chips came with the meal. So she kept just saying that was the case and they were not going to give me anything else, even the i tried explaining to her i know thats not how chow mein comes. Then i try tasting it and the chow mein was absolutely bland, no flavor, 2 or 3 small pieces of chicken and pretty much just a whole dish full of onions.
