Great experience for delivery. Food was hot and fresh. It also was delicious. I started with the pot stickers and Crab Rangoon. Great flavor. The food was still so hot I had to wait a little bit to let it cool off I then went to the main dish Mu Shu Pork. Loved how they presented tortilla shells folded nicely so it was easy to grab to put together. One thing that would have been an add would be a plate for the type of food I purchased but overall a great experience If we are back in the area I look forward to dining in person. read more

Honestly, I just wanted Chinese and also to try somewhere new. (AND to not have to cook... or do the dishes... or leave the house for that matter.) I popped on CHOMP Delivery to see what my options were-- alas, China House. I didn't even know where it was located, and now looking it up-- I have driven by it 138294702198740128 times on the Coralville Strip! I feel like I have a good beat on the local eats, I am amazed I never noticed this hole in the wall. Four reasons to get China House. 1. DELIVERY. During a pandemic, yes please. Now knowing where this restaurant lives, yes please. 2. Prices! $5.50 for 8 Rangoons?! $2.95 for 2 Egg Rolls? Yes, please. 3. No frills, but hits the spot Chinese. Kids had the chicken lo mien, loved it. I had the sweet and sour chicken, yes! Add in the veggie rolls, rangoons and egg drop soup?! We weren't clean plate club-- due to the serving size-- but we were very, very satisfied. 4. Location. Just off the Coralville Strip (apparently) is a very convenient spot! I'd order here again. (If half stars were a thing, it'd be a 3.5 IMO.) This spot isn't trying to do too much and I'm ok with that! Grab some takeout or order in any day of the week-- China House will hit the spot. read more

I'm new-ish to Iowa City and originally from the east coast, and this is the best "East Coast" type of Chinese food I've found since I left two years ago. Staff is super friendly and it's just really great comfort food when you want Chinese. This is now my go-to place! read more

This is by far the WORST Chinese food I have ever eaten. It was almost tasteless. I ordered thru Door dash and could have received a refund if I had taken a picture of the food, but I had eaten it before I knew (because I do not waste food). Unbelievable. We stayed in Coralville last night and used a credit card for a delivery order at your establishment. Then you all proceeded to charge up 3 ATT charges after you charged our meal. How fantastic of you. We've turned it all into the credit card company and I hope they figure out how to prosecute you. Not happy to say the least. Yuck. MooGooGai Pan had 200 mushrooms, 1 carrot and a few pieces of chicken with a slimey sauce. I threw it away.

The fact that there were no others vehicles in the parking lot on a Saturday night at 7 pm should have been a clue. The place smells a little funky-- not like food but musty or something. Neither my husband nor I liked our food. The chicken and beef are poor quality. The broccoli was cold--not room temperature, but actually cold. We will not be back. read more

1 star because I had to! The second star was for the pop! Where do I start? The service was a perfect example of what not to do. We were seated and watched staff walk past us for 15 minutes ignoring us. Finally a lady came and took our order but didn't write it down. When we ordered more than she could remember we had to repeat our order so she could write it down. The Rangoon's were ok 2 of the 6 were strangely different than the rest? The chicken wings were gross! It took 15 minutes to get 6 tiny little wings, no sauce on them. Even though the menu said they came with sauce. But I'm glad they forgot the sauce because the wings were, crispy on one side and raw and weird on the other Side? My guess as a chef is that they microwaved these then deep fried them, to small to do that! We didn't even really touch them but I didn't want to waste any more time complaining. I was hoping for the wings hunan used to make, message me I'll show you how to do them! Food was less than ok, we both agreed that Panda Express would have been a better choice. Overall took 90 minutes to eat here not good enough food to wait that long! read more

My wife and I are new to the area and tried this place out by delivery through Grub Hub. I ordered a beef dish only there was no beef when it arrived. We called and were put on hold and then told there "should be beef just might not be very much. We offered to come pick up a replacement and they insisted there was beef, just only a little bit. Thinking we were crazy we dumped the entire container and sifted through. No beef. The only beef is now the one we have with China House. Very disappointing. read more

Worst Chinese food I have ever eaten. As a college student, I decided to spend some of precious dollars and order some Chinese delivery. After almost two hours, the driver getting lost several times, and my patience wearing thin I was excited to eat some warm food. That was the only good thing about this food, it was warm. I ordered vegetable fried rice and it was bland, burnt, and tasted like BBQ. Both of my egg rolls were severely burnt as well. Finally, my tofu soup was quite literally chunks of uncooked tofu in lukewarm water! Ended up throwing most of it away because it was almost inedible. Terrible experience, I wouldn't recommend this place to ANYONE. read more

I am AMAZED that this place isnt better reviewed! This place has the best Chinese food hands down that I've ever had. Unlike other Chinese restaurants, China house uses more than two types of veggies in their vegetarian dishes. They deliver quickly and the food is always hot and fresh. The white rice has been a little crusty a few times but I don't mind because they give me so much sauce! The veggies are cooked well but the chicken texture is off but I find that to be the norm at Chinese places. Highly recommend the egg rolls, veggie lo mein, and spicy orange chicken. we ordered spicy chicken, guangshi fried noodle and garlic veggie. The guangshi fried noodle is totally my style. It is not oily or salty. Like it! The spicy chicken isn't spicy at all. For me, it is just mild. But it tastes good. Worth a try! read more

China House is occupying the restaurant of the previous tenant of the building, Hunan. The restaurant got some fresh paint and remodeling during the transition. Gone is the luncheon buffet. Instead there is a lunch menu with about 20 options for a very reasonable price of under $6.50. The food is cooked fresh to order. Nothing fancy or special, but solid food for a good price. This restaurant is worth a visit, especially if you are getting tired of all the Chinese mega buffets with mediocre food that sits way too long in warming trays. read more

This place is a complete rip off and will never eat here again or ever recommend this place to anyone. We had two orders: a chicken fried rice-it was a dish of undercooked rice and vegetables with two pieces of shredded chicken. The second order was chicken lo mein- this time with ONE tiny piece of shredded chicken and plain noodles- not even veggies. This is terrible Chinese food. Period. I ordered sweet & sour chicken (presumably with a side of white rice, as is customary anywhere else), chicken egg drop soup, and an almond cookie. What I received was deep fried chicken blobs, nearly flavorless neon red sweet & sour dipping sauce with a side of equally flavorless yellow rice with 3 brown peas and a brown carrot chunk in it; egg drop soup with zero chicken; and a decent cookie that only slightly tastes like it burned even though it is evenly baked. I also asked for chopsticks with my delivery and did not receive any. This is truly Americanized Chinese cuisine at it's best. read more

If you want a basic, run of the mill Chinese place, this will be perfect for you. I ordered the orange chicken for my first time and chose the hot and spicy option thinking it would be... well, hot and spicy. It was probably the sweetest orange chicken I've ever had. Not bad if that's what you like, it's just not what I ordered. The chicken had no texture to it at all, and the flavor was pretty unremarkable. My boyfriend got shrimp in lobster sauce and it was basically just miso soup but with shrimp in it. The proportions also seemed on the smaller side for Chinese. I don't think I'll be ordering from here again, because I can get better flavored Chinese food from other places in the area. read more

Our family really likes this restaurant, especially under the new ownership. The food is better than before. We really like the Mongolian Chicken, Fried Rice, and Beef Noodles. The staff is courteous and kind. My children like the indoor fountain and wood carving of horses. I like the big, round tables and the decorations. They served us tea and ice water (with lids for the kids!) and offered chop sticks and forks. Dining-in and the take-out food are both excellent. read more

This place has really gone down hill and it wasn't that great to begin with. I hope that they can turn things around by providing meals that aren't designed to cut costs. The food is flavorless and is devoid of any sense of pride or even a base level of interest in cooking. They do not comprehend good customer service. Our order wasn't correct, and when we called them they must have pretended to understand and said the items would be there in 30 minutes. 30 minutes later-no sign of them. Called again, and they proceeded to argue-put on hold-argue-put on hold-for at least 20 minutes (probably hoping we'd give up). They said we'd have to pay for food we had already paid for but did not receive. It was OUR FAULT we received someone else's order along with ours but were missing items (once again, that we'd already paid for-it was on the receipt). Spoke to 3 different people who pulled the "act like we don't speak English well" card until the very end of our conversation, when they finally agreed to somewhat fix the order (and their English miraculously improved). My real rating is minus 5. I ate at this restaurant a month ago and it is my first and last visit. So please don't waste your time trying out this place. The only thing good about this place is the authentic Chinese decor on the wall. Food was thrown together, not sure if there was an actual chef in the kitchen, seems like they got anyone off the street to cook. I don't know how they managed to still be open for business, my biggest worry leaving was if I could be infected with Hepatitis B from eating there. read more

This is not the same restaurant as Hunan. But the quality and flavors are well worth the visit. Food was fresh and on time. The inside of the restaurant was remodeled and this is now the best place for Chinese in Coralville. While I miss Hunan this is a viable alternative. read more

China House is Hunan under new management. The make wonderful home made pot sticker and their sesame beef is outstanding. Their traditional Chinese dishes are great and very authentic. I order from them at least once a week. read more
