I attempted to order an item that was listed as 11.99 on the menu, but when it came time to swipe my card, the total came out to be around 16 dollars before tips. When I confronted them about this discrepancy, they pointed to a tiny sticker on one of the pages of the menu, indicating a $3 adjustment added to all prices. This practice is clearly a scam. If you have fallen victim to their deceptive tactics, I recommend contacting your credit card company to request a chargeback. At a conference at the University on a lovely spring day this week, I explored the many eateries in downtown Iowa City to find something other than the five hamburger joints that the hotel desk clerk recommended. Many of the restaurants and bars near the historic capitol finally had students sitting outside enjoying the sun. I chose Uncle Sun as I noticed six Chinese students having ordered a great variety from which each chose various morsels. Imagine my surprise when the Mu Shu pork came not with Mandarin pancakes and julienned vegetables but with loads of scrambled eggs, pork strips, cucumber slices and black fungus. It was delicious and very authentic. I hope I can find this version in Milwaukee. read more

The food we received was too salty and all the meat cashew chicken and sesame chicken were fatty and grizzle on it under a very thick and pasty salty sauce. Surprisingly great food! We were in IC for a shopping trip and needed dinner. The place is low key, and the food took a while, but what we got was delicious! The crab Rangoon was full and crispy; perfection. We had the entree orange chicken and Gen Tsao's that we shared. Very good heat and orange zest. Even the rice was good and not clumpy. We came in on a Sunday afternoon searching for bubble tea after our quest had hit some unexpected dead ends. The place is similar to the spot before - janky and smelling of old Chinese food. They do milk tea here rather than true bubble tea, but it was a nice silver medal. There were 6 or so flavors, of which we chose Strawberry. The tapioca balls were nice and at least provided some of the experience we were looking for. Judging by the grime, this place may be a decent Chinese spot. read more

I was curious about this restaurant because it looked like it had potential to serve tasty Chinatown style Chinese food. I really wanted to like the place because I love Chinatown style Chinese food and was hoping to find it here. We were quite disappointed. My partner (who is allergic to peanuts) ordered the cashew beef and found it to be full of peanuts with not a single cashew. It was tasty, nice and spicy with plenty of beef but he could've died from it. The order was placed online, so there was no chance of language miscommunication on our side. The rice accompanying the dish had undertones of basement and mothballs. I ordered wonton soup and steamed pork dumplings. The wonton soup cost $8 and came in a pint size container (I'm from NYC and I'm used to spending less than $5 for a QUART of wonton soup.) In addition to wontons, the soup had napa cabbage and shredded carrots in a very bland broth. The wontons were delicate and tasty. The steamed pork dumplings were small and seasoned a bit strongly with chinese 5 spice powder. The did not come with any dipping sauce, which would've made them a lot better. In summary, expectations not met but some degree of technical skill with making what seemed to be home made dumplings and wontons. read more

Since I regularly patrol the San Gabriel Valley I'm not going to say Uncle Sun ranks with the best Chinese food there. But certainly it's SGV quality food, and when you build in the value proposition, with pricing for poor college students, this restaurant deserves to be recognized. We ordered four dishes, all tasty, with the highlight being the fish with pickled cabbage soup. Broth was so tasty that I threw rice into the leftover broth so it wouldn't go to waste. Uncle Sun is a great example of how in the past decade small cities have become home to high quality Chinese food when near a campus with a significant Chinese student population. Also demonstrates that the "lo wai" portion of the menu at such a restaurant can be completely unrepresentative of what a restaurant can produce. read more

I always feel like I got punched in the gut after eating, but I wouldn't take it back for anything. Whether you are sober, blacked out, or just smoked a blunt, Uncle Sun is sure to fulfill your needs. I don't care how much they charge, or if I have never seen another customer in there at the same time as me. Or if their menu has a suspiciously large range of items to choose from. The flavor is authentic and there are many interesting choices, including a breakfast menu resemble dim sum and a late night grill/take out menu. It's decent and in point as far as Chinese food goes. OK. I feel a little bit bad only giving this place three stars. The wait staff was very polite, the food was excellent and we were even given two free appetizers. The appetizers were both small plates of some type of spicy cabbage and lettuce and they were very tasty. The reason I gave this place only three stars involves the "ambiance" of the establishment during our visit. We arrived about an hour before closing on a Monday night. There were few patrons dining at the time we arrived. On one wall of the dining room is a television and while we were there, the television was tuned to a program that resembled what I might imagine an Asian version of "American Idol" to look like. This was NOT the problem. In fact, the program itself was entertaining. The problem was that the volume of the television was turned up so loud that the onboard speakers in the TV itself were emitting the sounds of the program with a level of distortion that suggested that they were in great pain and could blow out at any second. It was LOUD, folks. The program was mostly musical, and any merit the music may have had was drowned out by 90dB of distorted agony that would have been too much for my 92-year old granddad who lost most of his hearing flying B-52s in the war. Oddly, this didn't bother the staff at all. In fact, they gathered at a table directly in front of the overworked TV and watched the show while they ate. Even the kitchen staff stood next to the kitchen door and took in the roaring program with no suggestion that it was turned up loud enough for the people in the restaurant across the street to hear. We attempted to broach the subject with our server, but she didn't seem to understand what we were saying so we let it drop. The moral of this story is that I recommend this restaurant highly. This was the worst Chinese food I've ever had. The General Tso chicken tasted like pure salt with no other flavor, and it came with MAYBE 3 chunks of chicken. The fried rice tasted like it was microwaved. The orange chicken... was basically just deep fried breading that had NO chicken in it. I thought I might actually chip my teeth on it, it was that hard. This is a very authentic place. It would be as if you walked off a street in China to a family restaurant. It has that same feeling...so ambience is a 2/5. Food taste is 5/5. Presentation is 3/5... kinda sloppy. Dishes are very large. The lamb garlic dish was excellent. I enjoyed the shrimp too...also excellent. I had rabbit for the first time which was meh. Maybe it's an acquired taste. And I had the A-vegetables which were decent. Too bad they were out of crab. Prices are excellent and very reasonable to very inexpensive. If you are a foodie...then come here. If you are an ambience snob...then avoid here. If you want to practice your mandarin then try it out. Heard him saying "why tf did she come again" in Chinese as I walked into the restaurant, though I don't even know him and it was my second time dine in here (didn't do anything bad during my first visit, always leave a tip for the waitress). I bet he enjoys bitching about his customers in the kitchen whenever he thinks they can't understand Chinese, just like what he did to me (sorry to disappoint you but I do speak Chinese ). I know some ppl who used to work here and got seriously exploited by the owner (wage arrears, super bad attitude, insulting language, etc.). Good for them cuz they no longer have to work at this hellhole and you shouldn't support this business if you believe in equality and workers' rights. Plus, food safety was a huge concern cuz during my visit this time I saw several roaches crawling on the floor and in the box where they store the food.
