I am a (somewhat) new dog owner of a very high energy dog and Best Friends is the best thing I could have done for my dog and myself. It's the only thing that can do exhaust her thoroughly. She loves spending time playing with the other dogs and after a day at Best Friends, she is a tired little angel. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. And most importantly, they truly seem to love what they do. It's also good piece of mind knowing that the animal hospital is right next door. As for pricing, they are pretty reasonable compared to some of the other places in the area, especially if you buy multiple visits. The only thing I would change is that I wish they were open a little later at night. But overall, Best Friends in Ashland is a wonderful place. read more

I can't thank Best Friends enough for their care of my wild sweet puppy! We were supposed to board her somewhere else this week, but that place canceled on us two days before our vacation. Best friends not only came in clutch but they took incredible care of my dog. They sent pictures twice in four days, and I watched her playing on the webcams throughout her stay. They clearly got to know and love her, and with the added bath she came home tired, happy, and looking/smelling amazing. I was so worried about leaving her based on feedback from previous places, but they made me feel so much better, and Luna was clearly part of the pack! ZERO STARS! Do not send your pets here. This facility has the shadiest business practices and are entirely unprofessional. I don't ever leave negative reviews, but I feel it my ethical obligation to steer people clear from this business. We moved to the area two years ago and travel quite regularly. We board our 3 dogs here each time we leave town-- I'd say we've boarded them at least 10 times at this point. Each time we board with them we run into some issue (i.e., random, unexplained fees, ignoring our attempts to check in on our pups, etc), but we chalked these concerns up to their busy schedules or a mistake on our end and have let it go each time. Today's interaction when attempting to board our pups was the straw that broke the camel's back... Usually, I make a boarding reservation through the website, but because one of our dogs had surgery 3 weeks ago, I called them directly to be sure that they'd take him and give him the care he needs. I carefully and thoroughly described the circumstances and the care our dog would need during his stay. My dogs are my children. I was not going to agree to drop him off anywhere unless I was sure that he would be given the appropriate care. I was reassured on the phone that they can take him and adhere to his post-op plan (isolated from other dogs, and taken on leashed bathroom breaks to limit mobility). The person I spoke to on the phone requested that I reach out to our surgeon and request a letter verifying the administration of his pain medication. Immediately after the call, I did exactly that. I sent an email to our surgeon, copied Best Friends in that email, and a letter clearing our dog for boarding and verifying medication administration was sent. In my email request to our surgeon, I reiterated the agreement that was made over the phone so that our surgeon's office knew that the Best Friends were made aware of our dog's recent surgery and were willing to adhere to his treatment plan. The person I spoke to made the reservation for us over the phone and again, reassured us that our dog would be in good care. Today was supposed to be drop off for a 5 day stay. We leave on a flight tonight. My husband showed up this morning for drop off and THEY TURNED HIM AWAY stating that they can't take a dog with post-op care DESPITE MY ASKING THEM THIS QUESTION DIRECTLY OVER THE PHONE AND BEING TOLD THE OPPOSITE. So now we leave in 5 hours with nowhere to board our dogs. To add insult to injury, after 4 hours, I finally heard back from the manager Alfredo (despite being told he would call be as soon as he got into the office) who took zero accountability and was painfully defensive. Don't bother giving this place your business. ****I'm adding this part of the review after Alfredo's response to the review. I also added a photo for reference of the email that all staff at Best Friends saw: The team at Best Friends had ample time to communicate with me that they cannot care for my dog in his current post-op state. They didn't. I did my due diligence as a pet owner to ensure that my dog would be given the care he deserves. I asked all the questions, and shared all the necessary information about my pet's care. As I said to Alfredo on the phone, my issue is not with the fact that they have boundaries around what care they safely offer. Frankly, if they don't think they can offer the right care, then I don't want my dog to be there either. My issue is that they ASSURED me over and over again that they could care for my dog, they even saw the email were I reiterated the agreement, and never, in 2 weeks, thought to correct it. I've now had the second horrific experience in 7 months and mostly result of front desk. I went to pick my cat up this morning. The gentleman whom I learned was the owner, yes owner came out back to take dog back to day care. He had miserable look on face and didn't interact with the owner. Just took dog. Comes back with miserable look on face. I said who I was there to pick up. Then asked to make sure nails clipped per my booking. He said well no groomer there who is comfortable trimming cats nails. Whaaaat? Proceeded to say they did best and couldn't do one leg. No apology or anything. Just a miserable look on face. This is where I lost composure and said then I need a refund since I didn't get what I paid for and now have to pay someone else. Instead of being nice to have a discussion he said services were rendered and no since my cat wasn't cooperative. Um no. Not my fault their groomer doesn't do cats. They should have reached out to me. Then he asked me if I can do them almost like if I can't how can they? Ummm moot point. I paid for professional to do them. After horrible exchange I did get money back. I then found out he was owner and said he wasn't very customer service oriented. He said he gives off energy he receives. I started out smiling and nice but I was angry. I then found out he's new owner as of a year ago which explains everything! For about 6 years it was a great experience and now front desk is so rude with attitude. When I walked in, the place smelled so bad and the rugs were covered in dog hair. Never ever have I experienced unsanitary conditions here. It's so unfortunate it's under nasty management. He nodes himself with degree in hospitality which is quite funny. Not knowing who he was when I dropped my cat off, I saw him sitting at front desk not smiling or acknowledging any customers. It makes me so sad that a former hidden gem has gone terribly wrong. Not only in unfriendly staff but sanitation. It's not a place I want my cat at. So so sad about this. Hopefully my cat doesn't get fleas or anything from the wads of dog hair in lobby and feel terrible I left my cat in a smelly place. read more

I've used Best Friends for my dogs since 2018 for boarding, day camp, and baths/nail trims. Everyone I've met there is friendly and great with dogs, and mine always seem happy whether I'm picking them up from day camp or a week away. My dogs clearly recognize and have a rapport with them, and they come home exhausted and ready for long naps. I like being able to watch them on the doggy day cams, and my fridge is plastered with pictures from all the Camp Parties over the years. Pickups and drop-offs have always been smooth from my experience. Something super helpful for me was how easy it was to bring them to a different Best Friends location - I took a day trip and was able to quickly get them signed up for camp at a Best Friends closer to where I was staying so they could just do camp rather than having to board for one night. Overall, I'd highly recommend Best Friends. Oh, also, they did an awesome job getting rid of the smell after my dogs found a skunk in our yard, twice, in two days... read more

I used this facility for the first time at the end of July and was excited because it was close to home and attached to my vets office. They also offered a first night free for new clients. I was expecting to pick up my dog on Monday, but came home early and called them to pick him up on Sunday afternoon. When I got there, the person who brought my dog out said that he must have rolled in something and would I like him to have a bath before going home. Of course I said yes because he smelled horrible and after about 20 minutes he came out somewhat bathed. On the way out of the facility he had diarrhea and again as soon as we got home. He vomited when I got him home and what he vomited was not his food. Some kind of orange substance and was completely undigested nuggets, much larger than his normal food. He should have been getting fed once per day in the evening so there is no way he should have had anything undigested, since it should have been about 24 hours prior that he had eaten. He continued to have diarrhea for 5 days afterwards and the facility had the audacity to send me a picture of my dog "having a good time", but in the picture he was covered in feces. So he hadn't actually rolled in something, he was having digestive issues that were unreported to me. And reading other reviews that have been posted around the time my dog was there, it apparently was because of a lack of cleaning at the facility and affected many others as well. I called to inquire about his stay and to ask what had happened, and they pulled up his records which were incomplete. He "may have been given pumpkin and probiotics because he had a digestive issue" although they couldn't tell me that for certain. They don't know when he was fed on Sunday and said it was impossible that he would have gotten fed another dog's food. If they couldn't tell me what he was given or when he was fed, how could they assure me that he was given the right food? I also inquired about the free night that was advertised on their website, since they had charged me for 4 nights (he was only there 3) and then credited me a "free" night, so I was actually charged for 3. When I called I was told that "that's the way it is" and was charged appropriately. No refund for false advertising (not to mention the subpar care). Thankfully my dog is okay now after some TLC for a week, but if I could give negative stars to this facility I would. STAY AWAY FROM THIS FACILITY IF YOU VALUE YOUR PET. We brought our dog in for a short stay over Labor Day weekend. Before dropping him off, the staff at Best Friends told us that they had recently had a case of Kennel Cough, but that they were clean now. They went into great detail about the steps they took to rid the facility of Kennel Cough, including disinfecting all the cages and common play spaces. Those claims were clearly exaggerated because after just 3 nights in their facility, my dog greeted us in the lobby lethargic and wheezing uncontrollably. We immediately asked what happened, and the response from Best Friends was, "We're not sure, he was fine this morning. He just started coughing." His coughs were so bad that a random man in the parking lot came up to us and said, "I hope you are taking that dog to the vet." We immediately did, and our vet told us that he has the worst case of Kennel Cough she has seen in her career, and that it was days from developing into life-threatening pneumonia. I have trouble believing that he went from fine to that state in a matter of hours like Best Friends claims. My mother called Best Friends to speak to a manager, Michelle, about our experience. Michelle's response lacked both empathy and responsibility. When my mom told her that our dog contracted the worst case of Kennel Cough our vet has ever seen, Michelle's response was "Well, I don't know how long she has been in business." Instead of being horrified that Kennel Cough is still spreading in her facility, she immediately chose to discredit our veterinarian. She also said that our dog's "existing health conditions" put him at higher risk for contacting Kennel Cough. His only existing health problems are issues with his joints and his thyroid. Nothing respiratory at all. Her response was completely unacceptable and shows me that she is more concerned with deferring blame than she is with protecting my dog's health, or the health of dogs who are unknowingly at risk of Kennel Cough in her facility right now. The most frustrating thing about the entire experience is that Best Friends is attached to a veterinary hospital, and my family had approved medical treatment up to $500 without even contacting us. My mother asked why he had not been taken there, and Michelle told us she would check and follow up. We are almost 24 hours later and she still has not called us back. I'm writing this review to caution fellow pet owners about Best Friends Pet Hotel. I feel completely misled, from the moment they told us how they were preventing Kennel Cough, to their statements about the timeline of my dog's illness, to the false sense of security I had with the attached veterinary facility. We've been using the boarding services for several years. I've liked it enough, clean facility and next to animal hospital, which made me feel a little better about leaving our dog. My dog, fully vaccinated and healthy 1 year old, went to camp ONCE and got a GI bacterial infection that cost me over $300. My poor pup was throwing up and having constant emergent diarrhea and on two weeks of 2 antibiotics. He has no previous illness, GI issues, or any other medical issues. The vet said this is from poor cleaning and I agree having many years in animal husbandry. Ok so my husband and I put our eight month baby St. Bernard up for an extended stay at best friends. We have had a relationship with them for many years but mostly with Heidi, the amazing and loving groomer! We had one of those "once in a lifetime" trips come up that we couldn't pass on. Well, the manager Kelly made sure everything went smoothly and without any hiccups. Our boy couldn't be placed in any play groups because he hasn't been neutered. Very disappointed with this place. I brought my 7 month old Maltese puppy here to be groomed, when I got back his hair was cut to be all different lengths. He had sections that were complete shaved and others with long hair. I also paid for his nails to be cut AND filed which neither got done. I brought him in with his flee collar on and asked if I should take it home, and they said no they have cubbies for the puppies. When I got him back home I called to explain his collar was never returned and they continued to tell me I didn't bring him in with it on, and that they would not refund me if they are unable to locate it. He comes home smelling great, his coat is shiny with less shedding and his nails are always trimmed to perfection. He is never stressed about going to be groomed. My dogs are currently in the capable hands of Best Friends Pet Care. We were dislocated due to a home emergency, and they've agreed to take on our two little rascals while our house is being repaired. One of our pups, grew up on the streets in Puerto Rico before he joined our family. He's never been interested in playing with other dogs. I've caught him twice on the webcam playing with his sister. I've decided that the fine staff are miracle workers, and I feel a lot more at ease about letting them take care of our loved ones. It is hard to find a place that will board cats!!!! Best Friends is clean and quiet, which i guess is about all you need when you are boarding cats. my 2 gripes are this though: 1. if you want your cats to eat the food they usually eat at home, you have to pay extra. huh? i have to pay to not use your food? i dont get it. 2. their daily rates are pricey. we have 2 cats and i think it comes to over $30/day to board the two of them. maybe thats not much (i have nothing to compare to since this is the only place i've ever boarded them), but it sure seems like a lot considering all they do is sleep in a cage all day. :( read more

I had an awful experience trying to book an overnight stay... It took me 5 phone calls, one online booking request, and an email (over the course of a couple weeks) to finally get a tour booked. I was promised over the phone that the dates were available and when I asked if I could reserve them in advance they said "no need, just book your stay when you show up for your tour next week." So I took time off of work to take the tour, only to be told then and there that they were booked up.* (At this point it took so long to get ahold of them that it was super close to our vacation, and their false promise really put us in a tough situation.) Lastly, the "tour" only consisted of peeking through a tiny window in a door at some kennels (not even the overnight ones) and I wasn't able to see the play area at all. I should add that I gave them a chance to respond to a private email before leaving this review, but still no response. I was really hopeful about this place, but it's as if they just wanted to push us away -- and they did. We found another place who accommodated us with one single phone call and no hassle. *I understand that many businesses have labor shortages and busy seasons, but if this is the case, please let your prospective customers know this on your website, or in an auto-response. Or at the very least, don't promise availability and then fall through at the last minute. read more

My dog has been several times to stay at Best Friends... He spends the night and plays all day with the dogs while we are on vacation. What makes this place great is that your dog has the opportunity to play all day and stay over night..I would never send him to a place that keeps him in a kennel all day with out any quality time outside. I have been looking into this place for sometimes now, no one seems to have a good reviews about them ( due to lack of knowledge of this place) I called to ask questions, the person on the phone was awesome and she explained everything. She helped to keep my nerves calm and was able to work through things. I dropped my dog off to them at 730 in the morning and i was told to check out live video. AT 8 am, i checked, and did not see my dog, 815 i checked again did not see her and again from 830 to 11 am. I called at about 1130 to find out what was happening. I was told my dog is too rough with the other dogs and that she was not able to play with them. of course , it bothered me because i checked the video at those times and did not see anything. I was more disappointed that no one called me, not even a supervising or whoever to discuss with me. After all this is the dogs first day there. Does anyone really think that the dog will be a perfect behavior? No, I know my dog more than anyone and i know her style and what she is like. I had set up overnight care with them and it was canceled right away. IT was canceled because : 1. they told me all kinds of dogs are welcome, no discrimination. 2. they will work with dogs with their best experience 3. my dog is half pit mixed and last , i asked them if it was because it is a pit mix, their response was " you know how pits can be. " Actually no, I do not know how pits can be. I have not had an issue with mine. I hung up the phone with them. I arrived to pick up my dog at 415 pm, the girl who was working had no idea of what happened, there was no manager on duty, or any kind of reports to discuss what was the situation. I asked for the manager to call me, heard nothing. My experience with dog daycare is long, i have board, dropped my dog off with no issues. She has mingle with other dogs with no issues, i have gotten all kinds of reports from each daycare. Except for this one. I am not trying to make this place sound hideous or the worse place. The people are great, the place is clean. My dog was happy when she came to me, but I was not happy with how the whole situation was handled. read more

I brought my dog here for grooming once & it was a huge mistake! Not only was the hair cut pretty awful (my dog is a yorkie & clearly the groomer has no idea how to groom a Yorkie), but we ended up at our vet afterwards to get STITCHES! The groomer, Tiffany, cut so close around her mouth that she took a huge chunk out of my dogs lip. The dog couldn't eat and was constantly in pain. Much like one of the other reviews here, the manager was defensive & said it was from something else. 2 vets confirmed exactly how she got the cut...the trimmer! In the end they paid for the medical bills & my vet, who once recommended this place to his clients, no longer does. Just the opposite actually. As for the groomer & manager, they stuck to their story all the way to the end. Sad. read more

We took our two dogs here last week for boarding. We haven't used the grooming or daycare service. We had no issues with their stay. Our dogs were happy and acting totally fine when we picked them up and didn't pull to get out- always a great sign! We were grateful that we received pictures emailed to us during their stay. I had my 10-month-old Aussie puppy stayed at this place as well as having him groom this summer; to say that I'm sorry to have left him there is understatement. We picked him up at around 11:00 AM and they inform us that that he was not ready because the grooming wasn't done so we agree to come back later, we received a call about 12:30PM and we picked him right away. To our surprise the "professional" grooming job had been butcher, so bad that I wanted to vomit, but I told myself that the fur would grow back and it wouldn't waste any energy arguing such a simple matter. About an hour later my wife called me stating that our friend would whimper every time he tried to get up or lay down and is not able to run or walk fast. As soon as I got home I immediately confirmed that my dog had been injured. I immediately E-mail Best friend pet care, which I received a response the following afternoon from Michelle the manager, she sounded a little defensive from the get-go and when I told her what had happened, she stated that it may be Lyme disease and there is no way that the puppy could have been hurt there, I kept my cool and I responded that my dogs has the Lyme disease shot and would be unlikely that he had Lyme disease, she responded that Lyme shots don't work at times. I told her that she should investigate what happened and I really did not want any other pets getting hurt there Further investigating the injury I found on my dog was a big bruise on my dog hind leg near his butt, This injury couldn't have been done by another dogs since he is not neuter and not allowed to play with other dogs. He did get better as the days went by. (About 5 days). It is too bad because I really wanted to like this place, it is so convenient located and I had taken my older bloodhound dog there in the past and everything seem to be OK. He's happy when he arrives and happy when I pick him up. I brought my terrier mix breed puppy here to get exercise and further her socialization skills. The staff was very nice and seemed to know what they were doing. I really like the online puppy cam feature. It was reassuring. The first day I brought my puppy, she seemed a little reluctant at first. There were several bigger dogs already in the play area. I only left her for about 4 hours. When I picked her up, she seemed a little skittish in the car and at home. She appeared jumpy. I chalked this up to her first time there and being with larger dogs. I brought her back 2 days later for another half day. I checked the puppy cam to see how she was doing. I caught a glimpse of her running around. When we went home, again she seemed jumpy for the rest of the night. I brought her back a few days later for another try. I checked the puppy cam a few times and didn't see her. I knew there are some parts of the outdoor area that can't be seen on camera. I assumed she was playing over there. When I picked her up she was not outside. I mentioned I hadn't seen her outside when I arrived or when I checked the puppy cam earlier. I was told she seemed "overwhelmed" so they separated her at 1pm from the large crowd to give her a chance to calm down. (I was picking her up at 4:30pm.) While I appreciate they wanted to protect her and calm her, I have a problem with putting her in a kennel alone for 3 hours. I would leave her home if I wanted her to be alone! I brought my 2 dogs today to Ashland animal hospital which is connected to best friends pet care and saw a young girl aggressively screaming and getting in the faces of the dogs. I have brought dogs there in the past, but will never bring them there again. read more
