GREAT Store! I was on the hunt for some Liquid Latex & Ben Nye make up - you can't find those just anywhere, and I didn't want to pay for shipping for something so small! This store is pretty cool - A TON of gag jokes & very awesome selection of stage make up! I don't know the name of the employee who graciously helped me - but he had grey hair & seemed very into SFX make up. He was so helpful he sampled some of the cream colors on my hand just so I can compare colors. I also showed him the costume I am creating & he was just a cool guy overall. He also was very knowledged in the products - he explained the differences between the fake blood products which helped a ton in picking which one to buy. I walked out paying $60: 4 cream colors, the medium size jug of liquid latex, sponges, one brush, & a small bottle of stage blood. That may seem pricey, but you really do get what you pay for when you buy professional grade SFX make up. I am very impressed with Bill Nye the colors are SUPER pigmented & does not fade away! I mostly came here for the Ben Nye fx make up, and they have quite a variety! From little sample sizes to bulk sizes, you can literally find everything! So I'm prepping for my road dog Russ' birthday party and what do I need? A fake mustache. Yes, that's right. You ask "Why?" I ask "Why not?" I'd seen the crappy ones around at the big box costume shop but I wanted something a little nicer, so I checked with a friend who is involved in local theater and she pointed me to this place. She couldn't have been more right. (Thanks CJ!) Drove down there with the family on a rainy Saturday. There are a few people there when we get there and the workers are busy so I randomly walk around to get a feel for the place and see if I can find what I need. Soon enough one of the gentlemen finds us and points me in the right direction. The wife and kids amuse themselves with the fake vomit while I look over some fake mustaches. I found the cheesy ones for about $2 each, but behold I find a nice theatrical real hair one for $10. Bottle of spirit gum, one $10 mustache and a couple $2 ones for my friends (hey, if they want a nice one they're more than welcome to buy their own) and I'm out of there for $20. Works were great, this store has freaking everything. My wife was happy because there are times my kids need costume things for school or girl scouts or whatever, and that stuff is tough to find when they're out of season. Store is pretty crowded and I didn't really get a sense to any rhyme or reason of the layout, but I'm sure if I looked around more I could. Not a negative, but I think the cash register there is older than I am. Total old school mechanical register with a laminated card next to it to figure out the sales tax. I love it. Oh and on the way out one of the guys did a magic trick for the 2 older kids and they loved it. I was in desperate need of finding better makeup to wear on Halloween. The cheap makeup in the Halloween stores wasn't only just breaking me out but also cracking within minutes making my skull face look like a pathetic attempt to do a last minute costume. After searching for theater makeup I ended up finding this magic shop right down the street from where I live. I've driven past by this place for years and never thought to drop in until the other day. I came in and was welcomed immediately and went over to the makeup counter. I love this place! I have been looking for a local shop that sells theater quality makeup and Best Magic has a great selection of Ben Nye makeup. I was helped by Robert, who was very knowledgeable and super friendly. If you ever need stage/costume makeup tips, go talk to him! The prices were comparable to what you would pay if you were to buy Ben Nye online, and convenient because you can see what the colors look like for yourself, unlike buying online. Best Magic and Costumes... Alright, first I'll confess that this placed used to amaze me to no end. But as the years went by and I grew more experienced in the craft, it came to my realization that I was ripped off more than CIA document being shredded 5 times. Selection: When I was still young and first started magic, I always wanted to step foot in a magic shop. After a couple of years of fumbling around with simple tricks, my dad found this place and took me here to get my birthday gift. I got to choose whatever trick I liked the most within reasonable price. I have to say, they have a nice selection of magic for such a small shop (I'm not counting the costume section because I had no interest in that side of the store). I ended up choosing the "Wonderful Pen", which is a version of the pen through dollar trick that has an examinable pen. So they had a great selection... but I'll tell you the kicker later. Service: When I was young, these guys were amazing. They were so nice an interested in getting me into the craft. They demoed the tricks and even astonished me with some of their originally crafted tricks. I'm not young anymore. I go back and realize these guys are all pricks with obviously faked concern, only getting you in the craft to hope that you buy more stuff from them. Only one or two of them are genuinely nice and willing to help you out, while the other ones have unnecessary egos. To have an ego, you need to be a somebody. Demos: Yes, demos are great. I was so amazed when they demoed the tricks when I was younger. Now I think it's such a waste for them to demo the trick... These guys are bad! Their technique is bad, their patter is bad, their performance is like David Blaine's "shaman" act crossed with Keanu Reeves' Neo act. Lifeless, lifeless, lifeless! The actual trick is only a tool to the real "magic." I guess if you want to just see the trick straight on, then this is a good thing... but it's not how it will look in the real world. I feel guilty each time I see a trick they demo because their technique is so bad that it's like they are giving the secrets away. Prices: OMG!!! I can NOT believe I used to think I was getting great deals! That Wonderful Pen I mentioned earlier is $10 tops at every online retailer... whereas it cost my dad a whoppin' $50 for that birthday gift!!! Obviously for magic, there's no return policy... but they should make exceptions for matching prices. I understand there are costs with ordering and reselling, but a $40 profit margin sounds too steep for my blood. Overall: 5/5 when I was 7 years old, and 2/5 now that I'm 24 yrs old. If you want to see tricks demoed and possible unintentionally figure them out, by all means go here. If you want useful advice that will guide you down the right path in magic, stick to online forums. This place is no place for magic guidance; it's nothing but a business. Nothing but egotistical hacks here that would go any lengths to make a profit. read more

Disappointed they recently decided to stop renting costumes and they're selling off what they have left. They, unfortunately, didn't have what I needed (80's costumes/gear). The magic selection for kids seemed minimal but my nephew got a couple new tricks he liked. This is the place to go for costumes, gag gifts and magic trick thingies. The service is quick and knowledgeable. I could hang out in there for hours thinking of all the gags I could pull on people. The fakey vomit is really gross looking, and they have like 4 varieties. They had fakey poopies and mini fart things. Fake scar things and that kind of stuff. Price: Cheaper at the mall, but it's not that much more. And you get it now, instead of waiting for the mail. It's quick to get in there and out...unlike a Spencer's at a mall. About 5 years ago, I decided to be Lizzie Borden for Halloween. I went to 6 or 7 different shops to find an appropriate ax, but couldn't find one anywhere- I needed something that really resembled a hatchet, something that would have been used for chopping wood (and people). I wound up making my own from a plastic battleaxe head and an old ax handle. I've kept my bloody dress since it's a great last-minute costume to have hanging around, and I've kept my eye out for an appropriate ax, but I haven't held out much hope. I went to Best Magic for the first time about a year ago, and today I was there for some buckteeth (of which they had several types of varying prices). I casually asked "So, what's your hatchet situation? Got any hatchets here, or what's up?" I was at the makeup counter when I asked- I turned around and saw the perfect ax directly behind me, and it was less than $7. Obviously, I grabbed it along with the buckteeth. After that I was allowed to paint a third-degree burn on myself with some awesome stage magic, given a sample of some stage blood (minty!), and was shown a magic trick by the most charming man ever. Oh, and I got to pet an adorable tiny dog. The moral of the story? Always go to Best Magic first. read more

I visited this local shop 4 times in the last few weeks and everytime I went, I walked out more inspired then the time before. They carry a wide variety of special effects make up and costumes; they even have incredible costumes to rent!! I recall coming here in the late 80's as a kid, who even then, as much as I am now, infatuated with "make believe" and the make up effects process,etc. I can remember an uncle of mine buying a bag load of gimmicks and magic trick gas and so forth and just having a ball. I ofcourse, being only 7 or 8 at the time, maybe was allowed two gags at most. Hey, I may have known between "right and wrong" but that didn't stop my Dad from knowing that going overboard on the gags, could have the potential for "more of a mess". I don't blame him. I would've done the same thing. But all the more, times were good and I was more than okay with that, I just embraced with what my uncle had purchased. I was living in Corona during this time, my first time going to Best Magic, which I want to say 1988 at the earliest. It may very well have been 1989. Best Magic in located in Anaheim (Dur!) and coming from Corona was literally an "half day" worth of driving. It seemed so anyway. Even now. Traffic..the 91? Come on. Okay, so I just remember vividly wanting to return there so badly and couldn't wait until my next trip down there! Besides, my grandparents didn't live too far from there so that would be a good excuse. That next time would come in the next coming years, I'd say the second time being in the early 90's. 1991 or 1992. It was for a brief stop in, as my dad would stop by the nearest 7-Eleven close by anyway, so he would do that for me, knowing how much I had loved the place. Though short the time was in there, it felt like forever but not forever enough. 10-15 minutes in there was "long lasting" for the time being, but it sure went by fast. Every time when I entered the store, I would see autographs strewn all over their walls, lining it like a border and even noting, even back then, Actor Harry Anderson (of the TV Series Hit "Night Court") and find that to be a very cool thing to see. Then there would be endless magic gas, fake hands, limbs, fake blood, all kinds of make up, prosthetic make ups, and so much more. Then there is the one half of the entire store, consisting of nothing but masks and costumes, which the masks would just line the walls and isles would be just full and packed with all sorts of varieties of different costumes. It was a place of utter awe as a kid. Even in recent times when I've been in there. But no matter what, i would always leave with something from there. Whether it be a fake scab, scar, wound, fake blood (the mint flavored Stage Blood--Nice) or a magic gag, it was well worth the wandering of the store, to just leave with some remembrance of a visit. My hopes were met again in 1993 when my Uncle (the same one) and my Aunt visited us where we were living in Fullerton. We took the trip down to Best Magic once again, just being a few years later, after we were in Los Angeles all day on that very heavy rainy day and even witnessing Actor/Comedian Richard Lewis crossing the street up off of Sunset Blvd and my Brother seeing what looked like Actor Chevy Chase in a small red sports car. To cap off our wet and rainy day in L.A. with a trip to Best Magic was just a way to cap it all off I must say. Stepping out of our large 15 passenger van (we had a good sized family-family of nine) right there off of Magnolia Ave and Orange Ave, with the rain flooding the street up and over the curb, like the great water wake....getting wet up to my calves...it was all worth it. Stepping into Best Magic for another little go around, was just another day in Fun-ville. Good times. It wasn't until about 1995, when my family had moved from Fullerton and into Garden Grove, is when I really started frequenting this place almost like a monthly routine. I would ride my bmx bike for a good 4 miles every time to just hang out in there, and I would be in there for anywhere up to two hours. I just really loved the place. But hey, that's just me. I even bought many gags, make ups and Halloween things there over my time. I put in alot of miles on my bike and even the occasional bus ride into going to this place. 1995, 1996, 1997, and on...I was there all the time. Every single time I stepped in there it would take me back to 1989, to my first trip there. Just a nostalgic "never seemed like I left" feeling. My friends even dug the place too and if it weren't for me, they never would have discovered nor witnessed such a place as cool as Best Magic. Great times!! I went again in 2008 after about 6 years of not going here. I felt just like it had every time I visited. Time has stood still for this place. You can't say that for many places or business in today's world or market. It's now 2011 and I have been a few times in '08, and this time I think I will be going in to buy a enough to make up for loss time and purchases. Hehe. Best Magic? Yes. Best Magic Indeed. I was so pissed about the way that he treated me that it took every strength I had not to tell him off right then and there. I stayed tight lipped, made a stank face and immediately decided to come on here and write about my experience so this asshole loses out on future business. I work in entertainment and know what products I like to use. I found myself in a bind and needed some make-up NOW. I searched for the closest costume store in Anaheim on Yelp and this was the place that popped up. "Best Magic - Gags & Costume" The reviews seemed okay except for one guy who felt that he was ripped off and treated rudely by some prick. Anyway, I had a feeling they would have what I needed on the fly, so I decided to look into it more. I ended up calling-in first to make sure they had what I needed before I bolted over on my lunch. It was probably the same dude who answered the phone that was the douche to me in the store, because the male voice I spoke to was short and sounded very bothered by my questions. I didn't catch the asshole's name who helped me, but he had a salt & pepper extra long pube looking like beard, an old black t shirt, and a bunch of BO... oh yea, and a lazy eye. Aside from being a complete dick to me for NO REASON, he also never informed me that there are NO REFUNDS OR EXCHANGES. He'll just stamp it on your receipt and send you out the door as soon as he gets your money. I will never take my business to this dump again. A few years back, I ran into this place during a filming makeup emergency that required me to scour Orange County for a certain Ben Nye product. Turns out, this place had it (and a fabulous selection of other FX makeup essentials), and they were kind enough to hold it at the front for me as I rushed in and hurried out again. Cut to a few years later, I am currently visiting my parents and felt the need to sate a little of my drive to buy a couple of magic supplies for my burgeoning magic interest. With my familiar magic shops all gone, I googled around and found this one not even knowing it was the same place I visited initially. I was absolutely blown away not only by the incredible selection, but by their staff. As I mentioned, I have only been conjuring for a few months now, and am a bit green around the gills. I got so many amazing tips and was really pointed in the right direction on several fields of interest (including escapology) and was able to complement my magician's tool box with a few select items from their huge stock. A pretty motivating and inspiring place for both amateurs and serious conjurers alike. Seriously, go, even if you're not into magic, you will be once you talk to these guys. This place is my Go too for the Ben Nye Eye Black makeup, good quality and they have a good quantity of them to choose from. They have other stuff in there but I only recommend the Ben Nye. Everything else is a 50-50 chance like masks I've tried on there were dusty and smelled old like they been sitting there for a few years. But overall the Ben Nye is the star of the shop and the workers in there are cool and down to earth, good guys that want to help you out and have a good convo with. First, before coming to this store and making a purchase, let it be known that there are no refunds, so you don't have the obviously atypical experience the angry reviewer had here. Ben Nye is not sold everywhere. These guys can find you just about anything in the catalog. You can't order over the phone though as they'd like payment beforehand. They have a neat little selection of just about everything, and what they don't have they can probably order. I received personalized experience from a man with a blond ponytail. He was helpful and made a few suggestions of things I might need. Honestly, I really liked that this place is in Anaheim because the others I can think of are at least 50+ miles from this locale. I really wished i had asked for his name! He was wonderful! Answered all my questions, was very helpful with tips and ideas for my costume.. The #1 reason they get 5 stars? Once it was time to pay for the merchandise, I handed over my credit card, he asked for ID, which I provided, but I had my ID with my maiden name on it (didn't realize my husband had kept my current ID with my married name on it) He apologized and asked for an ID with a name that would match the credit card, (that's when i realized my hubby had my ID) luckily i had another picture ID with my married name on it and the transaction was completed. he apologized again for the trouble but I told him, i really appreciated them looking out for us customers!!! they shouldn't have to apologized for protecting us customers from fraudulent transactions.
