The food and atmosphere is pretty good. Located just past the downtown area of Canton, it is convenient. There is plenty of parking. Monday is burger night, Wednesday- wing night. The servers are pretty nice as well. My only complaint is the wait. The average wait time is about 45 minutes (we've definitely waited longer). I have never been this shocked before in my life. October 10th I got a call from my sweet son, you could tell he had been crying & terrified. He was dining in here with his friends that attend St Lawrence. He told me that the waiting staff cussed at him & threw his plate down because he simply asked where the restroom was. The food came out an hour later barley warm to the touch, he said he felt like someone was out to get him. Obviously you don't know my son but he's the sweetest boy on earth & this hurts me. Its a room, for an OK price. I had a much nicer room the 1st stay, the second time was a smaller room and maybe not as recently refinished as the 1st, but still, comfortable. The place does maybe smell like the pool throughout, but not so much inside the rooms. There is a restaurant - I have not tried that yet, but have 4 years of visiting my daughter in college to try it. There is also a lounge comfy little bar to have a beer before retiring for the night. Canton was in between the 2 places I needed to visit during my trip to the area. I've stayed here before and was good with coming back because the people here were nice and the rooms were decent. The property is older but the rooms have been remodeled and the beds are comfortable. I also like the fact that they have food and bar on premise. I did not use the fitness center but stopped by and loved the variety of machines. I have only been here in the winter and would love to come back when it's spring/summer to enjoy the views of the golf course. read more

Alright, this place is not awful but it needs a bit more care and thought into a bunch of things. The staff was alright, friendly, but not very enthusiastic, and Paul the manager when we asked a question, he snapped and was very rude. He did seem a lot nicer after he realized. No complimentary breakfast was provided which is offered at other hotels in the area. In the room the microwave and fridge (Which is awesome that they even offer that) looks as if they were their when they built the place really old, your grandparents probably have more updated appliances. BRING your own glass cups, they have paper and plastic ones. The paper ones say "caution when microwaving" (That gives the impression that you can) well for a quick hot water for tea, the cup burns at bottom and stinks the room a little. Big safety hazard if it burnt the hotel down if people put it in to long. Shouldn't even have them. The shower/tub Faucet is all messed up, don't know if its the design or if its broken but turning it all the way on is cold water and turning it halfway is hot...??? The water pressure is pretty bad too. I wanted to go to the pool, but as always, it closes to early (10pm) But it looked pretty nice and the fitness center was also very nice. Great equipment. When you first walk into the hotel it will smell like choline and the pool is way in the back of the hotel. The room as a tint of pool smell as well. The high speed internet is great, I didn't have to deal with signing in to anything, its fast, its FREE. BIG ++ I would most likely recommend another hotel in area, but there are very few. Do not stay here. They gauge for all college related stays, especially graduation weekend. They will tell you that there is a 2 night, non-refundable minimum. Don't believe them. Wait until the last minute to book. Rooms were available and at a lower rate. They do not care if you have unforeseeable circumstances that you need to cancel. They will charge you anyway no matter how much advance you give them. Do not believe that there is a waiting list either. There is not. This is how they try to get you to book early. The University Best Western in Canton has it ups and downs. A five star fancy hotel it isn't. The suite we had was dusty, the desk covered in fingerprints, and the closet shelf was filthy. The paint looked old and the windows were streaked with dirt and coated with a film. The bathroom was average size for a hotel and the shower had poor water pressure. The king size bed was so soft it was like sleeping on a marshmallow and irritated some pre-existing back problems. There are some plus sides to this place such as the restaurant. The wait staff however seemed to rush the diners but the food was excellent. The desk staff was helpful and very caring, greeting us as we walked in each time. The coffee in the hallway was just okay and much better than the room coffee. Our balcony was void of any furniture.. it would have been nice to sit outside and enjoy the beautiful fall weather. The hotel room we had was over priced for the cleanliness. Unfortunately the weekend we stayed there there were several sports teams staying there and at times it got a little loud with kids coming and going all hours of the night. Finally, you could hear the little kids screaming and yelling in the pool jut below our room. We were trying to have some quiet time and that was pockmarked by screams from kids splashing in the pool. Our windows were even closed. and we could still hear them plain as day. I would not recommend a stay here. for our next visit we are going to stay in another hotel that is better priced for the services it offers. *UPDATE!! Now I am dealing with a preauthorization mess!! These folks preauthorized over 1000.00 on my debit card for a room that cost 450.00. This is just me.. but I feel like they are trying to steal money from my account. STOLE MY EXPEDIA CREDIT $ THE M.F. my wife and kids drive 6 hours for college visit. When my wife checked in the hotel required a $25 on a credit card. We do not have credit cards but we had $25 in cash. Hotel refused and after speaking with hotel manager they still refused. Then my wife and kids wanted to try find another hotel but this one stole our credit from EXPEDIA saying that they have no refund policy. So they stole our money and with no services rendered. So my husband and I travel a lot together on business. That being said, we have stayed in our fair share of hotels and lots of Best Westerns. We are Platinum members. However, we could not upgrade at this BW. I guess due to a conference. The first room offered was on the ground floor. It had 2 double beds. And it was tiny. Barely enough for 2 adults to move around in. Plus, though it was clean, it has a mildew smell that flared my allergies. They moved us to the the floor above and this room had a queen bed. The mattress I must say was too soft. We are not a fan of ultra soft pillow too mattresses. It was really the same size room but with 1 bed felt larger. With a loveseat and coffee table. TV really too small to see from the bed. My husband felt the room was just too small in general (more like a box). The bathroom was really small too but we'll appointed. Husband made the executive decision for us to find another hotel for the remaining 4 nights. (no comp breakfast is a hassle in the morning too). *So, I thought I should add that the workout room/gym is very nice. It has newer equipment and is pretty big for most BWs. Also, husband and I really liked the spas in the bathrooms and the pool is pretty nice too. read more

I don't often write reviews & have found that many reviews in places like Yelp & Trip Advisor are far from accurate or trustworthy! Having said that, I felt compelled to write a review that should counter many of the old ...and older reviews. This being my first visit to the Best Western University Inn, I have no idea what the hotel was like years ago ...or even 6-7 months ago ...however ...whatever problems they may have had in the past have been corrected in flying colors, IMO. Someone complained about the in-room refrigerator & micro. I haven't tried the micro yet but the fridge is in no way an outdated appliance , as someone else described. In fact, it's the most modern hotel doom-size refrigerator that I've ever seen in a hotel, with an electronic, lighted digital temperature control inside, instead of the typical dial that's like playing Russian Roulette with your food ...and invariably freezes any liquid you keep inside ...even full gallons of milk. The beds are heavenly! I had moved from another local motel where the beds were so bad that my back was aching by the second poor night's sleep on them. Soft would not be accurate enough to describe the bed ...mushy would be more accurate! The Best Western Bed I sleep on was a brand new Simmons Beautyrest and I had the best night's sleep that I've had in years ...not exaggerating! Someone said the jacuzzi didn't work but I'm wondering if they didn't see the timer control switch on the wall next to it that turned the jets on ...which worked perfectly for me! Have only had a breakfast sandwich & hash browns in the morning to eat at the hotel's restaurant but the sandwich was tasty & hash browns were done well. The corporate room rates were very reasonable compared to some other motel/hotels in the area. The staff were very friendly & accommodating & I spoke to several of them at various times. All were great. In closing, I hope others will read my review & decide to try this fine hotel out with confidence. I don't think you will be disappointed! read more

Facing a long drive back home, we decided to take our time and booked a room here via Hotels.com. It was a bit more than we hoped, and our expectations were not high. When we arrived, we were put off by all the construction--it was not clear at all where the lobby was! But, it can't be helped and from what we saw of the plans, it will be a far nicer entrance when it is finished. We were exhausted so we thought a dip in the pool would be nice. And it was! It is indoors, with lots of windows looking out onto the golf course. So, we could watch and criticize the swings of the players off the first tee, while they could see us and criticize our physiques--so that's a bit awkward. There is egress to an outdoor patio, but the doors were closed--this seemed a wasted opportunity. But there are no guards or anyone at all on duty, so I suppose that it wouldn't do to just have random duffers come in for a dip while waiting to tee off. The gym is also quite nice--at least beyond our expectations for a chain like Best Western. The equipment wasn't perfect, the sauna didn't work, but I got in a good workout. The room was comfortable enough, the TV tiny, but since there is only basic cable, it wasn't like there was anything on! Oddly, the power went off briefly in the middle of the night, which doesn't inspire confidence. But we survived the night. Coffee was available in the lobby, but breakfast must be purchased. This doesn't bother me--I'm not enamored with dry donuts and plastic cups of bad yogurt one usually gets for free. But the night before, we did take in the restaurant since options in Canton, NY are few. It was average--no more nor less than one would expect. The food is obviously from a corporate service--like airline food. My daughter had a burger, which was OK, I had a greek wrap, which was vinegary and basic, while my spouse had a chicken dish. Average, average, average. A full bar was advertised but when we asked for a cabernet and a chardonney, the waiter didn't even know which was red or white. He was a sweet but incredibly inexperienced server--didn't know the specials, didn't offer us any hints, didn't know the menu. I was informed by my daughter that I was scaring him, and that might be true. My quiet voice can be unnerving, I admit. However, our expectations were low and so, met. We finished (and I regret it) with sort of key lime pastry bun. Like airline food--acceptable at 30,000 ft, but less so at sea level. Anyway, the stay did the job we wanted--a place to rest, to grab a bit, and hit the road. If you come to visit St. Lawrence University, you could do a lot worse. read more

Been here twice and the food was good both times. Ordered the pretzel roll sandwich both times. Was great the first time with generous servings of meat. The second time there was less meat and they charged us $1.50 for one piece of lettuce and one tomato. Will never go back because of this. A bit overpriced. The room was good sized, but the beds seemed small. The hotel looks old and in the room and bathroom you see dirt and mold along the corners. The place needs updating and it needs a deep cleaning. Service was very good and the staff was very friendly. There are not too many hotels in the area, but I do believe that this is one of the better ones in this area. I was booked for 2 days I got back to my room after day one at work and they cleaned out the room and my stuff was put out in the trash? The desk said they did not know if I was going to come back? They did not change the key card and the did leave my cell phone in the room maybe because a cell phone can be traced and tracked. My mom and I stopped here for the night before visiting Saint Lawrence University the following morning. This hotel was really a delightful place to stay. We stayed in a 2 double bed room - wasn't very expensive, the room was clean and comfortable. The people were friendly, kind, and informative about their services. The restaurant was nice, had good food, and has a wonderful view of the SLU golf course. The pool, sauna, and hot tub were great. Pool & Hot tub are open til 10, the sauna is 24 hours. Not a lot of choices in the area - bad and worse- this one is just bad. Although the tiny rooms are recently renovated and fairly clean, there's always a dripping faucet or toilet. Key cards take 4-10 swipes - even the maintenance guy's pass key took multiple tries. Front desk staff go through the motions but there's no warmth or enthusiasm - they need to learn what hospitality means! The equipment in the fitness area is rickety and felt unsafe. The pool/spa area was clean and well kept. Wi-fi was iffy at best and the last night of the stay it was completely out as was the tv. The maintenance guy was the bright spot - genuinely friendly and helpful! read more
