My family has been spending summers at The Waldhiem for most of two decades. There is no cell phone…read moreservice, no television, no radio. It is an amazing and relaxing vacation, and one of the most beautiful places in the world. The family that runs the campis amazing, not only in their care for their patrons, but for their love of the institution.

My parents, grandparents and I began going to the Waldheim in the summer of 1957. My father was a…read morestressed-out executive at GE and the Waldheim was exactly what he was looking for: no telephones, no tv, no noise, very few motor boats. It was heaven for him. My mother loved the food in the dining room, especially the pies. My grandfather loved the three hearty meals per day and the walk through the woods to go to the dining hall. My grandmother loved to sit in an Adirondack chair and look at the lake. Every morning at sunrise, Duane --- a jack of all trades -- would come in and make a fire in our fireplace. I slept on a rollaway bed in the living room, and I was always awake when Duane came in. The morning fire warmed up the water heater that stood behind the fireplace and it took the chill off the room. My grandfather woke up early, and he'd come out of his bedroom and every morning he'd call Duane by the name Larry. My grandfather and I would get dressed and hit the trail early to reach the dining room precisely when it opened. We'd walk up to the porch and a waitress would ring a large bell to let the resort know they were open. We could smell wood burning in the fireplace, bacon frying, coffee brewing, bread baking and pancakes on the griddle. By the time we were finished with breakfast, my parents would arrive with my grandmother and we'd all enjoy the rising sunlight dappling off the lake. When I looked through contemporary photos of the Waldheim today, I swear nothing has changed. Green water glasses in the dining room, canoes from the boat house on the dock, hikes to nearby lakes for picnics, fishing and swimming off docks in front of the cottages, reading lamps in the windows....it's all still there, unchanged and charming. When we stayed in Longview, we chased a huge white catfish around North Bay but we didn't catch it for years. When we did, we took a Kodak black and white photo of it that I still have. We spent hours canoeing around, floating through massive populations of exotic water lilies with massive blooms that were forbidden by law to pick. As we canoed, we would look down and see fish swimming lazily below us. I remember dragon flies darting around us, dipping to the surface and leaving circles like rain drops. At night, we would play cards and read. No tv. Everyone drank, and in those days my father would take an ice pick and break off large chunks of ice from a bin on the front porch. He'd carry the chunks to the bathroom sink and chop it up into cube-sized pieces. The ice had been cut from the lake in the winter and stored between layers of sawdust in the ice house down the road. All of our senses came alive at the Waldheim and, 47 years later, the smells and sunlight and canoeing across a silent bay all come back to me as some of my best memories of childhood.

The room itself didn't have a fridge or a coffee pot, but right outside of our room was an area with coffee, ice, refrigerator, toaster, bagels, breads, yogurt and more. The location of this Inn was super close to restaurants and the Harbor(right in front of the Harbor), Sackets Harbor village is lovely also! I would definitely stay there again. It is located on Lake Ontario. Highly recommend!

We weren't expecting an incredible experience but we certainly got one! Judy was wonderful managing our reservation and warmly greeted us when we arrived. I like the concept of boutique hotels but sometimes find they can be too cramped or stuffy, not the Harbor House Inn. It's intimate but rooms are spacious so you feel like you can breathe. The room was absolutely amazing, farmhouse chic with a splash of coastal aesthetic. The soaking tub was to die for! The bed was very comfy. All the staff were friendly. Our room had a partial view of the lake, was a welcome surprise. The hotel is right in the center of town, perfect walking location to the battlefield, shops and eateries. All we wanted was a night away from the little ones but Harbor House Inn delivered a sweet experience. Highly recommend and will definitely return. It was worth the money spent!

Firstly they have plenty of parking including quite a few electric car charging stations so good for those who need it. Location wise you are near a plaza with Pizza Hut among other stores and plenty of store and food options in the nearby area. Check-in was simple enough with a friendly worker who even apologized for the wait as we were behind one either person. I think due to the holiday weekend lots of rooms were booked and we ended up having to get a two queen room as that was all that they had available. Bed is comfy enough but neither my wife or I really enjoy the pillows they have. The shower/tub and bathroom in general is nice enough. Their housekeeping is offered every other day so you won't get it unless you are staying longer. They do offer complimentary breakfast that seemed very typical but appreciate it being free compared to most hotels charging you. A good option for the area for a place to stay. By no means my favorite hotel but minimal complaints overall. I would stay again, but may bring my own pillow.

Guest service and housekeeping were very kind, especially towards the kids. The interior decor is really eclectic and modern, definitely different in a good way from your routine generic hotels out there. Bed was super comfy, big bathroom (no tub), large screen TV and everything very clean. Excellent spa quality bathroom products! The standouts were the common areas, dining space, gym, outdoor patio and pool areas were so beautiful. While the pool is on the small side, the kids had a blast. Only slight negative was the breakfast. Food quality was not as high as other hotel breakfasts I've had. The breakfast sandwiches were premade ones and limited hot items were microwave quality. Although the mango water was delicious! There is a plaza directly next door which was nice for a quick Pizza Hut fix. We paid about $160 for one night on a holiday weekend, overall an okay value. We'd recommend and return!

My room is not cramped at all as it is very spacious; very long and very wide. It comes with the following amenities: * Large bed * Large couch that comfortably seats two * Flat-screen LG tv * Table for two * Coffee table * Medium refrigerator * Microwave * Iron & ironing board The bathroom comes stocked very well. The free WiFi is a great addition to the room. I can't count how many installations I've been to that charged military personnel for this very much needed feature. The staff are very friendly, courteous, and professional. I would definitely stay here in the future and recommend this hotel to my friends and business associates. *** The hotels out in Watertown are outrageously priced in the $115-$175 per night range! I don't know what they are thinking. I was offended when told that, due to my being in the military, that they would adjust my rate to the per diem rate. First of all, per diem has nothing to do with commercial businesses. They thought they are doing service members a favor by meeting the per diem rate. I found this to be extremely disrespectful and felt their business is taking advantage of the money I am provided by the government for temporary housing. Holiday Inn Express??? Comfort Inn??? Ramada??? These hotels should never be above $65 per night and they are asking more than double that! We are in upstate New York! Don't get me wrong, it is beautiful up here. However, I've travelled to over 26 states in the U.S., and I know when the need arises to pay that much money for a room, but there is nothing out here that would drive their prices up that high! The fact that there is a military installation in the vicinity of your business should not drive up your prices. You should instead be greatful of the added business and increase in the local economy that the installation has created for your business. Do not take advantage of those whom provide and protect your freedoms.

This is not a Hilton, and you should go into the experience understanding that. That being said, for the price you really can't beat it. The rooms are fairly spacious (more so than the Days Inn off post where my husband I spent two weeks at the beginning of our PCS here.) Ours had two queen size beds, a small table with two chairs, a TV armoire, a large dresser, an armchair, and little kitchenette. The bathroom is small, but again...I wasn't exactly expecting a jacuzzi tub & double sink. The free, continental breakfast served each morning is one of the more varied ones I have seen. They have your typical breads, bagels, muffins, cereals, & oatmeal. Plus yogurt, hard-boiled eggs, a small fruit selection (apples, bananas, & oranges- don't get too excited) and frozen meats, eggs, waffles, french toast you can heat up in one of the two microwaves. Sure if you're staying there for as long as me (1 month) you'll probably get sick of it, but I'd get sick of anything after eating it for 30 days straight. There's microwavable food available for purchase at the front desk, which saved us many a late night. The free coffee & tea available 24/7 is a nice little perk, too. Oh and a free laundry room is a great plus! There are only 3 washers & 3 dryers, so it does tend to get a little crowded. My few complaints: the little kitchen area is very small and doesn't have a stove. Eating microwavable meals for every meal gets old, quickly. Also, the WiFi is AWFUL. You can access the internet, but don't expect it to be fast and certainly don't expect to watch any videos online. For some reason, the cell phone reception is terrible here too. It's weird, once I'm a few feet away from the hotel, my cell phone gets its bars back & I can use it. That was pretty inconvenient. Overall, a fine place to spend some time during a PCS unless you're a millionaire and can afford to stay in luxury for more than a few days. Which, if you're in the Army, I'm pretty sure you aren't. :)
