    Ferdinand calls to me
    Jeff C.

A spur of the moment decision lead me to Bestway Supermercado, and I have to say that the experience wasn't all that bad. I often hit a Latin market on Rt 1, so I'm not new to this type of shopping experience where the smells of real food hit you as soon as you enter the doors and strange but exciting items can be had just a few coin. Yes, this place is pretty much the same; however, it is well-lit and stylistically, its layout seems a bit closer to Safeway. Still, overall, it was a pretty nice experience. Oh, and they even had my Mexican style sour cream in a squeeze bottle, which is supposed to enhance the taste of tacos and salads, but let's face it, I squeeze that stuff into my mouth like Bart Simpson and Milhouse drink frozen Squishies from Apu's tap. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=61kHpmenkT8 Yup, it was all there for the taking: Sour cream, green mangoes, cheese, ears of corn, a ton of Pepsi, and lunch meat...All of it for just under $20, which I am pretty sure that I could never pull off at Safeway. But the prize that really caught my eye was a row of pinatas lining the front window. They were exquisitely made, and my eyes soon settled on an Aquamarine bull that seemed to be calling my name. "Jeff, buy me. It will be mootastic!" "Look, Ferdinand, I'm sorry, but I have absolutely no use a Toro pinata." "You do, my chubby little matador, you do....You just don't know it yet." "Well, if you're going to get cheeky, Ferdinand, you can just hang up there until next year's Cinco De Mayo, for all I care." So it was that I somehow managed to resist this bovine siren's call, but on the drive home, I couldn't get the idea of owning an aquamarine Toro pinata out of my head. What could I possibly use it for? OMG light bulb moment!!!! I could stuff it full of mini bottles and turn it into the perfect adult birthday present...Ole!! It seems that Bestway really does have everything a shopper needs. Time to go pick up Ferdinand.

I shop at Bestway for one thing: cheap meat and poultry. Mostly to be fed to my dog. :P

Giant has platains that are "green" but they're soft inside and sweet and not ideal for when you want to make tostones.

The self-checkout area is a masterclass in frustration. There aren't enough lanes, the systems look like they were installed sometime during the Bush administration, and half of them are usually "temporarily out of service" with paper bags draped over the screens like little brown tombstones. The line regularly stretches toward the back of the store, so forget "quick trip." The few seasoned employees who work that area really do try, but most of the self-checkout staff have perfected the art of standing nearby while being remarkably unhelpful. Prices, of course, are sky high--which might be easier to swallow if the place didn't feel so out of control. Shoplifting is clearly a sport here; you can literally watch people grab cases of beer and stroll right out the door. Handheld baskets are scarce because those walk out too. Outside, the loading dock area frequently smells putrid, and the seating area that's supposed to be for paying customers is often taken over by loiterers and left dirty and uninviting. It's not exactly the relaxing neighborhood grocery vibe they're going for. And then there's the parking garage. The lighting is dim enough that you half expect a crime drama to be filming in the corner. It feels dingy, not safe or welcoming, and the escalators from the garage to the store are out of service so often they might as well be decorative art pieces. For a grocery store in the heart of Old Town, this place should feel clean, secure, and well-managed. Instead, it's giving "municipal chaos with luxury pricing."
