In regards to discharge planning and your rights: My sister was discharged to Ellis Nursing home in Norwood from BIDN because the Case Manager said her "friend" works there. As a patient you have a right to a list from that case manager of possible places as it relates to your Insurance- You or your family can research and then packets requesting a bed are sent to those places- This is informed decision making. My sister was never given a list after asking multiple times and was told they only had "1 star" so the case manager said she took them off the list. It isn't up to her. I research places on multiple venues including licensing deficicencies not just google and Yelp- She had no right to make that decision for my sister and not give her time to research places. I say this because you don't know what you don't know. Because a friend of the case manager is trying to fill beds is unethical practice. My sister ended up in a room at Ellis in Norwood which is not a good facility to be in. (Read Ellis Review and see pics) My sister observed what appears to be maybe black mold and an awful unidentifiable smell (maybe the mold) and multiple infection control concerns. I saw the pictures and agree. Now we are trying to get her discharged out to places we had time to research. I left a message on the complaint line at BIDN, I hope it doesn't get swept under the rug or erased and their practices put the patient first. This is an unethical practice by the Case Manager and against my sister's patients rights to be part of her planning. I don't think this facility treats patients as a whole. There were some wonderful nurses caring for my sister and an excellent surgeon. read more

This place is horrible! The nurse in the ER was rude and condescending. I called to ask what happened to my son and she made up a stupid answer. Then this hospital location sent him home with a broken leg saying there was nothing wrong with him. Three days later he's in a Boston hospital having surgery on his knee and leg from being hit by a car. Two weeks later and he's still in the hospital recovering after surgery. I don't know who was the incompetent doctor there but the quality of care was awful! This is so unnecessary and unprofessional. I would try everything to avoid being taken to this Needham location. Since Norwood Hospital was flooded and my PCP became part of Beth Israel network, I've had excellent care at both BI Needham and other doctors in that healthcare system. I was very sick last December and was admitted to BI Needham and had a great team of doctors and nurses take care of me. The ER is inundated with patients due to the shutdown of Norwood Hospital so you can't hold that against them. read more

Terrible ER experience. I had a particularly bad time from an ER nurse. I came to the ER with shortness of breath, chest tightness. I had several tests, lastly a CT. I had asked the CT techs when the results would be in they said it could be as soon as a half hour as they weren't busy and the ER wasn't busy. I asked the nurse when I was back about an hour to please check my chart to see if the results were in. He told me that they wouldn't be back and I explained that I was told they could come back in 1/2 hour and again requested he look at my chart. He became very aggressive, came right up to my face and asked if I wanted him to keep punching them in the face until they gave the results to him. He also found it important to get me to understand that he works 12 hour days. What he didn't realize was that I heard and saw him, throughout the day and evening, sitting outside my room chatting with 3 other hospital employees. As he only visited my room 4 times at most, I do not believe he was there to stay close by. I explained to him that I was uncomfortable with the IV needle that was in the crook of my elbow and that my husband, who was with me, is undergoing chemo for a very serious cancer, and I really wanted to finish and be on our way. He offered that I could check myself out. This was at 7 hours of being there without a clear explanation of findings. I said I didn't want to check myself out. He left the room and came back with discharge papers saying the doctor said I could leave. I got a call when I got home from a doctor with the CT results advising me to follow-up with my doctor. Today, reading my chart, the doctor noted that nursing checked me out without notifying him. I've had testing and procedures at BID Needham. At those times, the staff was efficient and professional. I do not recall any of them complaining about how long their days were or yelling in my face. Never mind checking me out without the doctor's directives. Time for hospital leadership to improve the ER. read more

Allyson F Coopersmith, MD took care of me on my most recent ER trip I don't know if she didn't take the time to read my chart at all or just trying to make the hospital extra $$ but she is the first and only Dr or nurse in any setting to order and run a urine pregnancy test on me in 5 years! ( I had a hysterectomy) not only is this in my chart I also told the nurse at intake too. My insurance should fight this charge they paid a lot of money for that surgery. Lazy staff.. also she put notes about examining my body she didn't touch my stomach or back or listen to my breathing! But she wanted me to do a spinal tap like no thank you I'll go see my doctor who actually knows my chart and care! She should have a job at BI not up to their standards. nurse also lied to me about giving me IV meds when I was "sleeping" I wasn't sleeping I had head phones for noise cancellation fighting a 48 hours migraine! I thought he lied but billing proved it! Like why lie about giving me another dose of iv meds! read more

My mother had to go to the ER for passing out. I am her healthcare proxy but they deliberately cut me out of the loop and I wasn't allowed to go into the ER and explain what happened to my mother for over an hour. Eventually, I was allowed in but they didn't listen to me or ask for approval for any tests. They then decided to keep my mother overnight for tenuous reasons. The next day they continued leaving me in the dark and treated me horribly. My mother began declining from this day. It turned out that my town's Fire Dept. EMS made outrageous claims about my house and my mother's living conditions. (I discovered through reading previous reports that they had been lying about my mother for awhile. Since December she has had to be taken by ambulance to the hospital several times. Apparently EMS was getting tired of it and wanted her removed from the house so they wouldn't have to deal with her anymore.) The hospital without informing me called Elder Services and claimed they revoked my healthcare proxy and wanted to begin court proceedings in order to get a court order to remove my mother from her home. They lied to ES and claimed that I tried to remove my mother from the hospital! I had to call everyone up in order to find out what was going on and demand answers. It was a terrible experience. And even though I found out from Elder Services that the hospital told them that they were not going to go to court after all and began talking to me and telling me what was going on. The damage had been done in my mother's condition. Long hospital stays affect her stamina and her eating and drinking, etc. Instead of letting her come home to be taken care of the hospital forcefully recommended rehab, which has been a disaster. I am now in the process of trying to get her home from rehab as my mother's condition with all the medication that Beth Israel ordered for her without any consultation with me is preventing her from being awake long enough to eat! There are some stand out doctors and nurses and hospital staff at this branch, but, unfortunately some very terrible problems can occur because of the not-so-good ones. read more

This is not the place to go for ANYTHING. Been in the ER since 3PM yesterday...not upset about that... haven't seen the doctor yet, not upset about that. Ordered lunch at 9AM, it's now 3:15PM and still no lunch. Spent 8 hours on a gurney, parked in the hallway. moved to a room finally but no meds, so no sleep. Pain level is a solid 10, no help in sight. The techs are awesome and really care the nurses are good too, I don't know about the doctors, so overall, it has to be MANAGEMENT that has this hospital this bad. this is the last time I go to BETH ISRAEL. If there was a 0star option I would have used it. Absolutely terrible experienc, brought my daughter in for what seemed to be a rash and they had no clue not even the supervising doctor Bryan Stenson. after seeing 2 previous rationed that treated her like she was a leper. not helpful at all. after we left we used AI to diagnose the picture of her leg and said it was staph infection. We made appt with primary care turned out to be staph and spreading. I highly recommend to not go here until they get the right staff into emergency room. They were all laughing and joking in the pit we waited an hour and half with no help. Absolutely disgusting. . read more

A year and 1/2 ago went here very sick. Immediately got me a scan. They saw something and knew immediately they are a small hospital and had me transferred to Boston where further tests were taken. My mother went here twice in the last week. After the fact that they treated her like garbage they also didn't tell her about a kidney stone. She went back a second time because obviously she is still in pain and they treated her like shit again. Wasn't until her PCP got the report and told her what the Docs/Nurses here wrote down. BEWARE!! There is a small island at the entrance of the parking lot that is not visible in the dark or rain! We, and according to AAA, many people crashed into this island on the way in and ruined our tire. They know it's a problem, but don't care. I asked to be reimbursed for the tire and they refused. It's a terrible feeling when you're going to the hospital and you ruin your tire, it really adds insult to injury. They could put lights on the island or a sign, but clearly they don't care that people are repeatedly having accidents here. read more

Told me my A1C was 600. I would have been DOA.if.rhat was the case. They were both insulted and cluelezs.as to why I said I couldn't trust then because their communication sucled. In truth I have had a couple of OK visits to this ER over the years, but this past weekend I had one of the worst ever. I came to the ER with a sore swollen eye, pain level 3/4, pleasant triage, pleasant resident, all set to get a med prescription and go home when the supervising doctor appeared and proceeded, with no warning, to yank my already swollen eyelid up to my forhead so he could take a look. I grabbed his arm it hurt so much. And he did it again. After he left, I waited, painfully, for about 10 minutes and told him, nurses, etc I was leaving. I was so shocked, and so nervous because I wondered if he'd made matters worse. Because I was upset they accused me of "yelling at staff" - not true- and called a 20 year old security guard to escort me off the premises. I'm 69 years old. I had a library book and a bag. I am filing complaints all around. No one will listen, I know. And they will lie, I know. But people need to speak up. Healthcare is now too big to heal. read more

We had brought my son here for a mental issue...i was told i could come and visit. The first visit i jad gotten kicked out and now om my second visit (which was scheduled) again i was told i was unable to see him. Now i am waiting to speak to a counselor and hoping that gets me somewhere. I hope none of theirs children become ill and are told they are unable to see them . Wife was brought in after a severe bout with Covid-19 for vomiting, nausea and dehydration. Was checked in soon enough at approximately 3:30 pm. Given a gurney in the hallway for her and no chair for me. We waited for an hour until she was "addressed". Hooked up to an EKG and BP cuff at 4:30 pm. Ok. Still there for an hour with EKG leads and BP cuff after the nurse left without saying anything. An hour later, nurse comes back to do a blood draw. Two hours later, 6:30 pm, a doctor finally comes by and says, "So you were vomiting? You had Covid? Ok. We'll look at the blood work." An hour later, 7:30 pm, she comes back, same statements. Never saw her again. Wife left to 11:30 pm on guerney until I finally said something. No offer of a glass of water. No compassion or statement that "we're overwhelmed, but I just wanted to see how you're feeling? We're working on your labs." People were asking, "you guys seem overwhelmed." A nurse yelled "all hospitals are that way." Finally, at 12:30 am, a nurse attempts to hook her up to an IV for electrolyte solution and an anti-nausea med. Two blown-out veins later, another nurse finally gets her hooked-up. No one comes by again until 1:30 am. A doctor showed up who had an incomplete understanding of her case. They did find some cardiac issues, but ruled them out as "chronic" - see a cardiologist right away. "Let's discharge and get you out of here." This is not how to run anything. Some compassion and a bit of customer service should be on tap. Not leaving people to cool in the hallway. Nurses spent more time staring at computer screens for 20 minutes at a time only to interrupt their "screen time" by texting someone. Lots of horsing around, talking about NFL playoff bets etc. At 2:00 am, I asked who I suspected to be a nurse; what happend to the discharge. He looked at me like I had six heads and after I explained to him that my wife was seen by the attending physician, said he'd get the paperwork and get us out in 10 minutes. It's now 3:30 am. Another nurse came back with the discharge papers. Took out the IV tap and said, "good luck." Twelve hours for a blood test, IV, EKG and go home - see cardiologist? Nope. I never saw what I would call a "head nurse" in charge. Only saw one physician on duty for the whole floor. I counted 15 patients in the ER suite at 11:30 pm and two persons in the waiting room. I was also yelled at by some 20-something for going to the kitchen to get a glass of water after being instructed to go there by another floor nurse as where to get the water. This ER is being run similar to a call center. I am positive they are being held to some sort of Erlang Service Level percentage. The computers are dictating actions; and not the other way around as evidenced by the "hypnotic state" the nurses seemed to be in. I would probably be in the same state with endless beeping from unattended alarms, static computer screens, a screaming injured elderly man left on a gurney in the hallway, text notifications from my friends and on and on. read more

Hospital and services are fine. Business office is not. They will bill you for services not rendered and then make you dance around to try to figure out how not to pay for a surgery that never took place. In the meantime, they will continue to call and hound you for money that you shouldn't have to pay. Worst business office! read more

This is my local ER if my spouse or I need care after-hours. I like the fact that it's in the BI system, so they can see records (with some difficulty/work-arounds) from the main BI hospital as well as outpatient clinics, labs, and urgent care centers. I recently went here late on a weeknight after urgent care had closed, because I cut my hand with kitchen shears. The check-in process was quick, the waiting room was almost empty, and I got into a room quickly. It was very quiet, so I imagine it was a slow night. The nurses and techs were really nice; the gentleman who cleaned the wound--worst pain of my life, literally--was sympathetic and caring. The doctor was pretty straight-forward, and answered my questions when I asked them (I know to advocate for myself), but there wasn't as much forthcoming information as I would have liked. For example, would bruising be normal? Swelling? Pain? It was only 3-4 stitches but it was a deep cut so I had all of that, and wasn't sure if it was normal. I also got contradictory information in the ER vs. the urgent care center [also BIDMC] where I got the stitches taken out, but I think that's more the fault of the urgent care center. The discussion was around whether to keep the wound covered until the stitches came out: the ER nurse said to cover it when possible to keep out infection and to minimize scarring; the urgent care nurse who took out the stitches 10 days later said I shouldn't have done that. [Note: I'm not docking the ER for this, because based on my research/talking to other doctors, what I did was perfectly fine. There were also other things that the urgent care didn't do right, so I'm leaning in favor of the ER. In fact, 1 month later, it's healing quite nicely with a smaller scar than had I followed the urgent care instructions.] No billing issues. I'd 100% go back again if I needed something simple done. However, for something more involved or complicated (or for someone with chronic illnesses), I'd opt for the Boston BIDMC ER to have access to a wider range of specialists. read more

I was admitted around nine in the morning after a night of violent stomach problems (no need to go into detail). The hospital was empty and they took me right away. The nurse, Nancy, was thorough with my intake, quick and very attentive. The doctor decided I needed two IVs to replace fluids. My entire visit lasted two and a half hours and I was only released when they were sure I had the strength to make it home. The best part was the warm blankets they laid on top of me to help me fall back asleep and the constant cups of ice chips. For two seconds I felt like I was at a spa. [Those passed quickly.] If you don't want to deal with a huge hospital but still want the same caliber of care, I recommend Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. read more

Too much time of waiting. I spent more than 3 hours and I just got pain in my tooth. Also, there were only 2 people before me.

Terrible !!! Avoid if at all possible. The emergency room has no nurse to evaluate injuries. My son had a huge, deep multi inside out stitches gash. The receptionist never got out of the seat and put down laceration without noting severity, pain (which was very bad) or anything else. We waited 75 min. and when we were finally seen it was "oh wow that's pretty severe". We will never come back. Newton Wellesley is not much further and they know what they're doing - and they have triage. read more

My daughter in law went to the emergency room at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Needham a few days ago at night. She was there for eight hours. Her CAT scan and X-rays were read as negative, so they released her. She continued to feel so terrible that she went to a Boston Hospital today. She has a broken nose, probable concussion, and one of her blood counts is "dangerously low." She is being held overnight on an IV. Someone at BID Needham really screwed up. read more

Went there for a covid test and we were turned away because they said we were not on the schedule. They were not busy. 3 or 4 phlebotomists sitting around chit-chatting. We called scheduling and they confirmed that we had an appointment. We went back to phlebotomy and told them we indeed were on the schedule and they rudely made us sit there and wait for 45 minutes while the four of them sat around chit chatting before finally giving us a test. Made us late for our next doctor's appointment. We sat there for 45 minutes and not another single patient came in. they just sat around and made us wait and made us late for a very important doctor's appointment. These people do not understand the impact of their actions when they make people late for no reason. read more

She got good care from one nurse, but another nurse was genuinely mean, and another one told her--as my mom was explaining that her husband died when she, my mom, said it was OK to stop CPR--that at this hospital they do CPR for up to an hour and people sometimes come back. Even if this is true, WHO THE HELL SAYS THAT TO A GRIEVING WOMAN? That's the part that gets me! read more
