The great Yelp reviews lured us in, and the fabulous haddock sealed it -- Bet's is a wonderful home to a really scrumptiously tasty fish 'n chips. It's just a tiny little shack on the side of the road (we missed it first time around and had to circle the roundabout), but do they ever serve up the right stuff! They serve a huge -- really huuuuge -- portion of fresh, crispy haddock with homemade tartar and lemon dill sauces. It's not a plate of fish, it's a BOWL of fish, And it comes with crunchy fries, also a big serving. We think that may ruiined us for anyone else's haddock for a long, long time. There are picnic tables for your dining and a small parking area. Oh, it's also cash only, so come prepared. I've tried to eat at Bet's Fish Fry on multiple occasions. Each time I visited this place, I either arrived when it had just closed or when I arrived, they ran out of food. That's how popular and good this place is. Finally, after two years of trying, we were able to enjoy the amazingly delicious fish fry that everyone raved about. The batter was light and flavorful... And the fish was cooked to perfection. Not one millimeter was overcooked or overly seasoned. The ladies who make this food know what they're doing, and it's been worth every single attempt. Can't beat the locations right at the Common, and I love her artwork, but this is not my favorite fish and chips. The fries here have been kind of soggy and I didn't love the breading on the fish. Fish quality was very fresh and the portion was good. There are other options I prefer up 27 for takeaway or in the Harbor if you have time to sit down. read more

What a surprise this place was! We drove past this little hole in the wall with a full parking lot which speaks volumes. They specialize in fried haddock which was outstanding. It's okay. Amount of food for $20 is out standing. However... Fries were soggy. Fish coating came right off the fish. This shouldn't happen on Fish & Chips. The crunch wasn't there due to batter coming off the fish. Also, the fish weren't seasoned. Not enough tartar sauce for the amount of fish that was given. Nice place to stop by to eat because locals love it. Few tables with umbrellas next to the hut. However, it's not even in my top 10 fish and chips places. We've been trying to come to Bet's for about three years, but every time we try, they've sold out of fish and had to close early. This time, we made it! The fish was amazing. I do, however, have two complaints that keep it from getting five stars: first, there was a sign which read, "No French fries today, too hot." I've worked in kitchen. Yes, it gets hot, having to constantly drop fry baskets. But it was barely 80 degrees outside. It was really disappointing to set out for "fish and chips" and discover that there are no chips. Second, there was no price adjustment given for half of the menu being unavailable. A "small fish and chips" (being a 1/2 pound of fish and a side of fries), is the exact same price ($12) as a "small fish in a dish", which is just a 1/2 pound of fish. logically, there should be some sort of difference in price. But, the food was fantastic, the ladies were friendly, and the long line moved very quickly. Hopefully next time they will feel like cooking fries! read more

When I first moved here to Ocean Point I was told to go to Bet's fish fry so I went. It was wonderful. Waiting on those lines was just a slight inconvenience when compared to the excellent food. Well, time passed by and we decided to try it again. What a disappointment! The fish was dry, the fish was bland, the service was reluctantly friendly. In your humble reviewer's opinion, the recipe needs to be rejuvenated and the owner needs to take a deep breath and pretend it's the grand opening again. We need the ole Bet's back. read more

If you are staying in Boothbay Harbor this place is an absolute must! Worth any line or long travel. The Haddock was incredibly fresh and flaky. Just the right amount of batter. Nice crispy crust. Perfectly tasty fries. Comes with tartar and dill sauce. I am a malt vinegar fan and they put it in spray bottles which makes it easy to coat your fish. The culinary highlight so far from two trips to Boothbay is Bet's Fish Fry. They're open 11-2 and basically only do two things: fish and fries. The fish (probably haddock) are very lightly battered, impossibly tender and extremely juicy--not to mention the length of a football. I liked it without any additions, but they've got standard tartar sauce and a dill version too. The fries are very thin and very very crisp--with some approaching Durkee canned potato sticks texture while still being fries. A large platter with two giant pieces of fish and a bowl of fries the size of a salad bowl: $21, easily feeding two. The only disappointment: they're closed on Sundays, or we would have returned the next day. We did come back in our next visit, ordered the same thing, and were just as happy. Sure, have your breakfast and/or dinner overlooking the water--but at lunchtime, skip the views and enjoy the fried fish of a lifetime right here. read more

Nevertheless I was amazed when my name was called and the massive tray of food was given. Bet's only does fried fish. No shrimp, no clams, no lobster, just fried fish. My sandwich was a small and it was overflowing with over half a pound of the lightest, fluffiest,freshest tasting haddock I had ever had. They also had a dill tartar sauce that was amazing with it. The sandwich was on a nice fresh water roll....no lettuce, no tomato, just fish. I could eat this fish all day. Such a light and flavorful breading, not at all greasy and fried to order. The fish and chips was two huge fillets of fried haddock with a gigantic bowl of hand cut fries. Fantastic value and delicious food! Did I mention only two people work in this place? We discovered Bet's last week ( thank you Yelp reviewers! ) while driving from Ellsworth to catch a plane home from Portland. We debated going out of our way, but wow, was it worth it. Wonderful, fresh, lightly battered fried fish, in sandwiches or just plain. The fries are so delicious. They serve homemade tartar sauce, and they also have a homemade dill tartar sauce that you could eat just plain. The food is prepared at lightening speed, so it it hot and juicy.
