Boothbay Lobster Wharf is literally the best place to eat seafood without the inflated pricing in this tourist area of Maine. The lobsters are reasonably priced, and perhaps most of the food on the menu except the lobster roll (it's pricey). Triple soft-shell lobster with 2 sides was $39.99. You wouldn't find that anywhere in this area. Not unless you buy lobsters at Hannafords and have them steam it with current pricing this season at ($8.99) per pound. And you can't beat the buck-a-shuck oysters on Friday and Saturday, and they have really good clam chowder. This is the only place in Boothbay I look forward to going every summer. read more

I travel for food and experiences. I don't care about white tablecloth as long as the taste and service are good. I knew that I was going to be in Booth Bay for the botanical gardens and I really wanted a casual place to get off the boat lobster roll. I found the lobster wharf which is several food shacks and a bar with a to go kitchen. When you walk up there isn't anyone there to provide you any direction so you just have to figure it out which I like. There is a window with a large menu of fresh and fried seafood options. I ordered the jumbo lobster roll. I wish the picture could give you the scale but it's a huge amount of lobster no fillers. Just delicious and extremely filling. You can watch the lobster come off the boat and come straight up and be cooked. Sound good to you? Then read on. The first thing you need to know is that there are four different counters that you might end up going to: 1) lobster, 2) seafood shack 3) bar and 4) sweets. They all operate like separate businesses. If you want lobster (and you do), start there. Tell them your order. Choose between hard shell and soft shell and what sides you want. If you want a lobster roll, head to the shack. Ready for a drink? Go inside to the bar where they have 12 beers on tap or so. When you order lobster, you will order but pay when you pick up. You will need to leave a deposit for the cracking tools or $2. Use cash for the deposit. It's easier. The best seats are behind the bar, in the shade, and where you can watch the boats come up and drop off lobster. Unfortunately, it's almost always the place where giant families with annoying kids sit so good luck. They have live music in the afternoon. On Friday's and Saturday's they have buck a shuck oysters but it's cash only. Definitely a cool spot on the other side of the bay. You can get there by walking over the footbridge but it's a long walk. read more

Booth Decay FKA "The Boothbay Region Lobstermen's Co-Op," is an actual working Lobster Dock that also happens to have a fast-casual restaurant and bar. We arrived after a day at the nearby Botanical Garden and were ready for our first Lobstah Roll back in Maine. The Good: *Happy Hour daily 3 - 5 p.m. *Clam Chowder was fine, but I thought it should be thicker for my liking. Carissa thought it was fine fwiw. *Fairly large parking lot that could get filled during busier times of the year, but parking was plentiful upon our visit. *Full bar with everything from spirits to local micro and macro brews on tap. *Amazing views from their dog-friendly outdoor dining. They also have some indoor dining upstairs during inclement weather. The Meh: *Service wasn't friendly at all from the order or pickup booth. In fact, I'd say it was downright sassy-- and not in a good way. When we asked for our lobster buttered and not dressed (i.e., mayo) we got a giant eyeroll from the maître d'. Why she cares is beyond me, since she's not doing much beyond taking orders. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ *The bartender was slightly better service-wise, but she tends to disappear and you have to wait around for her to re-appear. *Fries were whatever, but at least they were cheap. *The Lobster was overcooked and chewy, which is disappointing. However, we will say they were very generous with the Lobster itself, as we both got fairly large pieces of claws. Pro Tip: If two people want a regular Lobster roll, you're better off ordering the large and splitting it. I'm pretty sure the large was at least double the meat of the regular, and it was only $10 more. *The roll they use for the roll didn't really hold up to the moisture, as it was fairly soggy by the time it reached our table. The Ugly: *They really have the gall to charge $2 for a tablespoon of melted butter. As if paying $40-50 for a sandwich isn't enough... 0_o Conclusion: Below avg lobstah roll with great views but grumpy Gus service. Hard pass. read more

We were having so much fun until the lights went out while we were finishing up our dinner. I went up to the staff to let them know we were still eating and they pointed me to the manager who simply said we are closed! At no time did anyone let us know they were closing soon and that we needed to finish up or anything. The manager was so incredibly rude about it and he refused to give me his name. Got the lobster rolls, lobster mac, some clam chowder another appetizer because some of the things we asked for were sold out at lunch time with noooobody eating there, and a couple signature cocktails. Lobster rolls had a lot of meat, but not a lot of flavor and "jumbo" was served on an "okay" tasting sub roll. That was a direct quote from the girl taking the order who also asked if I thought any sub rolls were actually delicious because they're just sub rolls. NOT WHEN IT'S A THIRD OF YOUR INGREDIENTS. The roll is important. Mac and cheese was flavorless and gritty. Obviously people there don't know that if you boil cheese sauce it coagulation and turns to shit, but because the flavor was already there, thats a moot point. I was told the clam chowder was better than the lobster bisque by the same worker so I went with that option. Bad call. Flavor was off, I asked if it was supposed to taste almost sour like and they said yes. One of the drinks was supposed to be titos and pomegranate juice. It came out orange and tasting like cheap vodka, I asked if that was the right, the bartender said yes. I guess she's just really really bad at her job. Maybe that's why she works midweek lunch and not weekends. Also, they store their drinks premixed in dollar store water jugs. These containers are not made to hold alcohol. They were not foodservice grade Cambro containers or any other type of foodsafe plastic container. Containers like these leech toxic chemicals out of the plastic into the liquid when they hold alcohol. There were workers milling around while most of the tables needed to be wiped off.Nobody stops around to check and see how things are so it's obvious that they don't care. Over all, I kind of thought that the place was going to be subpar because there were no cars there at lunch time. Boy was I right. People stand in lines for hours here for good food. The goal may be purist, unadorned lobster, but some seasoning can add to the magic. In Portland, to the South, à lightly peppered and garlic dry rub yields transcendent results. We went there on a busy weekday evening for lobster and shrimp. All was cooked as ordered with my 11/2 lb hard shell was definitely full size with fresh corn on the cob and coleslaw. My wife had fried shrimp with French fries and a baked potato (a bit of miscommunication on her order). The shrimp were delicious but on the smaller side (most likely Maine caught shrimp). We eat out on the dock to enjoy the evening and the waiter was great at bussing our table. One small wish is a better set of lobster crackers, hard shells can be tough to break open! Originally went for advertised happy hour which consisted of $2.50 draft beer, like bud or miller I think and house wines and a blueberry lemonade with vodka or rum for $5.00. The blueberry lemonade was actually pretty tasty, not too sweet. We did order a fisherman's platter with haddock, scallops, shrimp and whole belly clams and two sides for 37.00 it was okay and had enough food for the both of us but nothing to write home about. Best parts were the scallops and onion rings. Fish was dry, shrimp were very small, clams had a different taste I didn't like. Coleslaw was also good. The beer they have is very west coast style, I live in the Northwest of the US you can throw a rock and hit a brewery. The ones that last, make great beer, the ones that make good food don't last as long. I have not tried their food so I can't comment, I did see others with pizza it did look and smell good. Very disappointing. Went there due to the yelp and Google reviews, a local's recommendation, and based on how busy it was. Got bacon wrapped scallops, seafood sampler, sweet potato fries, coleslaw, and clam chowder. The scallops and sampler were all fried. The fried breading tasted old and disgusting on all the seafood. When the breading was peeled off the seafood had no seasoning or flavor whatsoever. The Haddock was somewhat good without the breading. The scallops were fried too and tasted slightly better with the bacon but gross. The clam chowder bowl should have been called a "cup" it was so small. Campbell's clam chowder tastes better to me. Even the coleslaw was not good. The sweet potato fries were the best item we ordered with am average flavor. I felt sick after eating some of the fried food. With two waters the bill was over $80. If I would have gotten steamed lobster at least I would have known what I was getting and enjoyed it. I cannot recommend the food I got from here. It was a very bad experience. read more

If you are looking for a no-frills place to have fresh lobster and more, look no further than Boothbay Lobster Wharf! We had such a good time there, that we came back two more times on our weeklong stay in Boothbay. The restaurant sits right on the harbor and has a massive outdoor deck. If that isn't your speed, they also have indoor seating in the main building. There is a full bar located in the indoor seating area. You order your food from one of three separate windows. One window has menu items, like salads, sandwiches, fried fish, etc. An adjoining window has dessert items. To the right of these two windows, is an open stand that has all of their fresh catch. Here is where you order your fresh steamed lobsters and clams! You give them your name after placing your order and they call you when it's ready. We were there mid-September, heading toward end of season. At that time, they had two lobster tails and two sides for $35. Nuts! They also had clams for $14.95 for a pound and a half! We literally spent our afternoons sitting on a picnic table, motoring lobster and clams with a bottle of wine. All of this while enjoying the gorgeous view of the harbor. Lobster Mac n Cheese was on their "featured menu" and noted as popular on Google so I ordered it. There are multiple "windows"/stations to order various things from. If you wanted whole lobster or steamed/boiled seafood, you went to one place. Want a drink? Go in the building across the way. Ice cream?, A different window for that. They also have a seafood market. Lots going on here! Most entrees and food was ordered at one window, though, and you pick up from another when your number was called. The ordering line moved fast. The wait for my meal seemed to take forever, 20 minutes based on my photo time stamps. I had time to finish the blueberry /vodka lemonade I ordered. Overall, disappointing. The mac n cheese was bland and portion for market price received was skimpy. I'm comparing this to the other lobster meals I've had this month. No sides, maybe offer a side salad? One veggie? $27.99 + tax. The drink from the bar wasn't great either. It tasted like a diluted lemonade. You know when your ice melts in your drink? That. If it had vodka, I couldn't taste it. What I will say is this place has fantastic views and even though I was disappointed with my meal and drink, there's still something special about sitting in the harbor having a meal at sunset... Let's face it, there are a metric ton of places in coastal Maine that you can get a really good lobster roll. Boothbay Lobster Wharf was recommended to us and I'm really glad we checked it out. Can't beat the atmosphere right on the water, eating at picnic tables and enjoying good weather. It's also part of a lobster co-op so you know that the very expensive prices are going to the people who actually got the lobster. Portion sizes are good and service is about what you would expect from a seasonal place. Make sure you poke your head in the lobster tank storage area.
