We had BB remodel and finish our basement. Absolutely worth the value. BB was clear and precise with their estimate before the work started. The design phase was easy, stress-free, and clear. It was a pleasure to work with Better Builders on our bathroom remodel. We did a complete tear-out of one bathroom (even two of the walls and part of the floor) and a few small items in another bathroom. Everyone we worked with was personable and respectful. The design team took extra pains to make sure our plumbing would be up to code, which required a second opinion due to the challenges of our site. Our construction manager, Chris, did an excellent job of rolling with the punches as items were back-ordered and scheduling was tight. We now have a beautiful bathroom with a respectable ceiling height that has plenty of storage for the three teenagers who share it. After my husband tried out the new shower, he said the bathroom made him feel like he was on vacation. We are well pleased! read more

Making a bid in a market they don't play in (Buildout ADU) and they came in 7-8x the average bid. Avoid these folks. Wasted my time.

Bill Babb and Better Builders are as honest as it gets. We had a job that was a tight timeline due to the pending birth of our second child. Due to this we HAD to fix our bathroom so that we could give the kids a bath together without it leaking into our basement. Not only did they do on time, on budget, despite one hick up with one of the subs, they were also a pleasure to work with while my pregnant wife and I slept just 10 feet away from the construction zone. They used zippered plastic to keep our bedroom a sanctuary while the master bath was gutted and transformed. Being in property management myself I've seen lots of builders. When a client wants a job on time and on budget, Bill's card is the one I give out. read more

I feel like a 5 star review simply will not do them justice! We hired Better Builders in November 2011 to do several projects on our new (old) home. Being 1st time homeowners we were nervous about hiring a contractor but boy did we pick the BEST! Bill came to our home to take a look at things we wanted fixed/replaced (roof, electrical, furnace, water heater, stairs...). He provided a quote the very next day and we were on our way to home improvements! On day 1, Pete (the project manager) took the time to walk us through each and every detail of what they would be doing. We were able to tweak a few things here and there (no extra charge)! Pete answered our millions of questions with a smile and lots of patience. He called us each day to check-in and update us on their progress and next steps. He took care of EVERYTHING! Needless to say, we were more than impressed with everything they touched! Better Builders is an exceptional builder/contractor. This was a premium remodeling experience for us. Removing an old, faulty solarium style window was a project requiring framer, roofer, electrician, drywaller, and painters. Matt Cummings and MRC Remodeling, based in the south end, ran the job for Better Builder's Bill Babb. Matt handled the permitting and the six inspections. Each person assigned to our project was a master craftsman. We hit a snag removing the old wallpaper, which required drywall rehab which we hadn't planned on, but Dennis is the Michelangelo of Drywall and turned those rough, uneven walls into a beautiful paintable surface...which Clint and his team painted perfectly. During the process the crew exhibited some OCD by cleaning everything up every single day, inside and out.They also took great pains to protect surfaces like the wood floors, and containing the dust as well as could be hoped. Seriously, it looked like an operating room at one point. Several of the neighbors have been in to see the results, and all agree it's impossible to believe the new window, ceiling, and recessed light fixtures are not original to the house. The same goes for the exterior - perfect match. We like Better Builders's approach to the job, giving a guaranteed price rather than an estimated subject to change. These guys are the cream of the crop. I would definitely do business with them again. read more

In summary, Better Builders had poor communication, with my 6-8 week job turning into over 6 months and my having to call regularly for updates. They were just too busy for good service, taking weeks to provide a bid. During the job, numerous mistakes were made that affected the quality, things were broken, I got excuses, and had to take some of the work on myself. But ultimately, dishonest billing practices trying to turn a bid into a T&M, exaggerated time cards, and double charges to make up for the mistakes were all disappointing tactics. The cleanup was also poor leaving me with a lot of debris and needing to hire cleaners due to the stretched out job. They even cleaned up their paint in my bathroom sink. Things could not have gone more poorly for us compared with the other yelp reviewers who got a prompt bid, service, and quality. I'm wondering if any of them are related. We just can not recommend Better Builders and in fact, because of the issues, and because Bill did not make it right given the opportunity but instead left us hanging with an incomplete job to this day, his company was taken off the preferred builders list at the referral service that recommended him. His focus is not on the customer but on his bottom line so I'd beware. These are problems with the approach and not just with 1 or 2 jobs. read more

I requested an estimate on getting my stairs replaced. I was told that the job would not require a permit, that it would be done to code, and that it would take one week. I signed with them. After 3.5 weeks, I was left with a staircase that did not meet code and a huge pile of garbage (including rusty nails) in my yard. Further, I discovered that a permit was required. I was told that corners were cut "to protect the company" and that I did not get to choose which codes I wanted to follow. When I threatened a lawsuit, the owner pleaded with me to settle with him out of court, and promised that he would be willing to work with me to "make things right." We agreed that I would not have to make the final payment. When I contacted him again later with further things that needed to be done in order to "make things right," he had his attorney send me a series of bullying letters. The best advice that I can give you is to not even get involved with these guys. read more
