I've traveled to places like New York, Orlando, Los Angeles, Chicago and Detroit to find some of the best Thai food, so I wasn't expecting to discover such a gem in Port Orange. I stopped into a small family-owned Thai restaurant and ordered one of my favorite dishes, Pad Prik King with beef, along with sticky rice and ice cream for dessert. From the very first bite, I was impressed. Their version of the Prik King was different from what I'm used to, featuring an extra ingredient that elevated the dish and made it absolutely phenomenal. I requested it moderately spicy, and they delivered a perfect level of heat--bold, flavorful, and authentic without overpowering the dish. The freshness of the string beans, the tenderness of the beef, and the rich, unique sauce all stood out. Every ingredient tasted fresh and thoughtfully prepared. Then came dessert. Their homemade sticky rice served with ice cream completely exceeded my expectations. It was easily one of the best sticky rice desserts I've had, and I've visited a lot of Thai restaurants over the years. What made the experience even better was the warm hospitality. The waitress was incredibly friendly and welcoming, making the entire meal feel like you were dining in someone's home rather than a restaurant. The restaurant is small and the decor is what I'd call cozy chaotic - lots of beautiful Thai shrines and figures, but then funky Christmas lights strung over whimsical photos. Don't let the "Reserved" tags on every table cause you concern, we and every party that came in after us were assured we could sit anywhere. We started with the Som Tam papaya salad at a medium and it had a perfect kick with the sour-sweet-funk punch of lime, fish sauce, rock sugar, probably some tamarind? It was fresh, cool and crunchy and a refreshing start to the meal. I had to try the Summer Breeze Rolls because I was actually first introduced to this restaurant by their stalls set up at various local farmers markets and the peanut sauce is out of this world, perfectly sweet and salty and a little curry spice kick as well. The rolls were wrapped a bit loose but I love that they grill the shrimp and also stuff mostly with lettuce instead of a ton of noodles so the rolls were more crisp than squish/starch. I got the panang curry medium and I think I could have gone a step up on heat but it was a nice mild burn that let the flavor of the sauce shine through. The veggies were crisp, the chicken tender, and I was happy with every bite. My father got the Lard Na 100 with crispy duck (a $10.50 upcharge but so worth it, so well cooked and crisp!) and loved it, just had no heat despite ordering it medium. I was impressed with the noodles - wide rice noodles but cooked firm so they didn't fall apart but had a delightful chew. The service was friendly, attentive, and super helpful with suggestions on heat level since we hadn't been before and didn't know if they pulled their punches (they don't, so start at a level below what you usually get elsewhere).
