On a road dotted with chain quick serve restaurants this stretch of Dunlawton does have quite a few unexpected and delightful places and this is one of them! The restaurant is small and the decor is what I'd call cozy chaotic - lots of beautiful Thai shrines and figures, but then funky Christmas lights strung over whimsical photos. Don't let the "Reserved" tags on every table cause you concern, we and every party that came in after us were assured we could sit anywhere. We started with the Som Tam papaya salad at a medium and it had a perfect kick with the sour-sweet-funk punch of lime, fish sauce, rock sugar, probably some tamarind? It was fresh, cool and crunchy and a refreshing start to the meal. I had to try the Summer Breeze Rolls because I was actually first introduced to this restaurant by their stalls set up at various local farmers markets and the peanut sauce is out of this world, perfectly sweet and salty and a little curry spice kick as well. The rolls were wrapped a bit loose but I love that they grill the shrimp and also stuff mostly with lettuce instead of a ton of noodles so the rolls were more crisp than squish/starch. I got the panang curry medium and I think I could have gone a step up on heat but it was a nice mild burn that let the flavor of the sauce shine through. The veggies were crisp, the chicken tender, and I was happy with every bite. My father got the Lard Na 100 with crispy duck (a $10.50 upcharge but so worth it, so well cooked and crisp!) and loved it, just had no heat despite ordering it medium. I was impressed with the noodles - wide rice noodles but cooked firm so they didn't fall apart but had a delightful chew. The service was friendly, attentive, and super helpful with suggestions on heat level since we hadn't been before and didn't know if they pulled their punches (they don't, so start at a level below what you usually get elsewhere). We have been ordering to go food from here for years. We stay at a nearby hotel and it's super convenient to pickup the food. Tonight we had the "winter pockets" (crab rangoon) and chicken pad Thai. The pockets were a lot smaller than they were a few months ago. Taste was good. Probably wouldn't order them again. Chicken pad Thai did not have peanuts or bean sprouts ?? This seemed odd to us. It was not the best pad Thai we have ever had. It wasn't the worst either. I ordered medium spicy and the food as not spicy at all. Overall, we were disappointed. Love this place - truly reminded me of my time living in Thailand when I walked in. It's a small restaurant with interesting decor. We've been twice now and service is always great. The food is delicious! Our favorite appetizer so far is "Winter Presents" - little packages of fried wonton goodness filled with cream cheese and served with sweet chili sauce. (Love some of the names of the dishes - "Lady in Green Sprinkle," Jasmine in the Pool") I've had the basil fried rice and the panang curry - both great! They close the kitchen at 7:50 on a Saturday night we had no opportunity to eat our dinner and decide on any dessert. The coccunt soup Tom Kha had too many ingredients it was odd. With no offset heat or curry it tasted like milk. Pad Thai was good the chicken was over cooked the shrimp was perfect. The appetizer the pork that takes 15- plus minutes was 5 stars. The deep fried chicken dish the pieces used were too small. We had big expectations that fell short. They are always busy, and they will always be upfront with you when you call in to let you know about how long for pick-up. If you are wanting a dead shop that takes 10 min for to-go, this is not your place. If you like fresh, wonderful, authentic food then they are your best best. People I know rave about certain Thai places in Daytona, this place blows all the other out of the water. Absolutely terrible! I will rate based on service but also food. Ordered Chix Pad Thai lunch special and it was a good deal but as we know you get what you pay for. They wanted to charge me $5 extra for making spicier than Thai hot and I declined that. Then when I went to pick it up I asked for the 4 containers to go and they said I could only have 2 for to go and if I wanted all 4 I would have to dine in next time or pay $2 extra. Ummm no thanks. It was so hot in there too. The girl said "Ya everything is expensive these days" like I need to know that from her. Then said if my "tummy hurt later.." I stopped her there and explained how I eat the hottest peppers etc and she was just full of attitude. The food was the worst! Very greasy and oily and just not something you feel comfortable eating but I ate it because I paid for it and was hungry. This was absolutely amazing!! We had a pad Thai and a Pad nam prig poa (white rice with vegetables in a reddish sauce. I added beef) and it was absolutely delicious!!! I grew up in Scandinavia and believe it or not, we have a huge Thai population up there so we are VERY spoiled with amazing authentic Thai food and coming here to America I've been extremely disappointed in the Thai food in particular but this food right here at Saowanee is the real Thai deal!!! We have eaten here many times over the last 2 years. Today I picked up food and was shocked at what we got. The Pad Laard with seafood only had 2 tiny pieces of squid when there should have been scallops, shrimp and squid. The vegetables were totally overcooked and the soup was filled to only half of the container? When I tried very politely to ask about this, the manager or owner told me " things have changed" and started yelling at me?! I said ok I guess we won't come back. First, I think it's important to say that we've actually lived in Thailand off and on for a number of years(8). So by now we should be reasonably expected to appreciate authentic Thai cuisine versus something that has been adapted for the American palate. We ordered five dishes plus a papaya salad. I tried the Chef O Pad Thai at lunch. I found it rather bland. Not very spicy and lacking in umami. It tasted like there was maybe no fish sauce in it. No smoky flavor from the wok. I didn't see or taste any eggs at all, though the waitress said they were just too small to see. They served it with no peanuts because they said many people were allergic. I came here with a coworker of mine who is a vegan so it was key that we find a place that accommodated our dietary restrictions and this place did just that! My ultimate go-to when I go to any Thai restaurant is red curry. The meal was packed with an abundance of veggies and herbs and it was a delightful explosion of spice and coconut creaminess. The you can add soup, salad, and spring rolls to your meal and if presented with the option, I would highly recommend anybody to do so! I was also thrilled to see that they offered vegan appetizers. I walked in and was told to wait and they would be right with me. Didn't ask if I had a pick up or done in, just wait. Then he found out I was eating on and said"sit where you want". All the good had an authentic name or a fun name so you really had to read the menu for most items. I had crab Rangoon as an app. They were pretty good but had these strings on the top. Be careful, they are not edible and really should be removed before serving. Someone not paying attention or a small child would choke on these. The green curry medium spice, had a traditional name but it was just green curry. I had a discussion with the server about spice level. He recommended that I try mild, when I told him it like some spice he said will then I would stay with medium. The spice level here is very low. I am confident 1 level up would be perfect for the average American. The portion was huge, there were a lot of vegetables but the amount of protein was minimal. Everything was OK but nothing was great. The service was really bad. I was never asked how my food was, my drink was refilled once before the food was served and no one checked on my table after. I had high expectations based on some reviews. One of our party ordered Pad Thai and was brought Pad See Ew. She didn't complain as that's her second favorite dish and it was "OK". I ordered red curry and spice level hot. I was told they have mild, medium, hot, and Thai hot so I was very surprised by the lack of spice in my dish, it barely qualified as mild. The other dishes were acceptable to the people with us but we were over all, disappointed. The menu notations give the impression that this is authentic Thai, and customers are encouraged to educate themselves about the food before coming in. Sweet little restaurant right on Dunlawton near I95. Definitely worth stopping on your way in or out of the beach or Port Orange. Has a funky little vibe with the colorful walls and art. The staff seemed to be short handed and did not come back to check on us, but the food was definitely hot and tasted authentic. Parking + Location They have a great little parking lot. Since they're located with other businesses along a strip mall kinda layout I can imagine parking might fill up quickly during holidays or busy dinner times but o went around 12 pm for lunch during the week and it was no problem. So its def in a great central location in Port Orange (near Daytona) Food Oh wow. I cannot say enough great things! I'm a vegetarian and their options were plentiful! The tofu is also fairly thin triangles of firm tofu that is lightly fried so it doesn't have a ton of breading or anything. You can for sure taste the coconut milk is fresh on their massaman curry tofu. It was awesome! They also have amazing spring rolls and ginger salads!! I'm hooked. This is EASILY the most tasty and best Thai food in Port Orange!! I also had their Thai tea and it wasn't too sweet. It came so cold and was extremely tasty! Prices Prices are very reasonable. You'll end up paying about $15 per meal for full (dinner) portions. But they also have lunch specials for $8 which is an appetizer, soup and salad! Ambiance + service It's a cute place. We tried the dumplings as a appetizer and they were fantastic. They definitely looked different than the traditional dumplings you see but really tasted great!!!! The Pad Thai in a soy sauce and chicken was so delicious and had a nice kick. "Not too hot and not too weak". I highly recommend you give them a try if your craving some decent Thai food.
