Trying out a new salon can be a daunting task. For one reason or another you make the choice to leave your current stylist in search of greener pastures, and keep your fingers crossed that you're not walking into something worse. It doesn't always matter that the library of photos is impeccable and makes you wish you could pull the trigger on vibrant colors that you definitely won't have the brain space to maintain... Stephanie of Bettie Bangs met me at the larger salon door, walked me back to her studio, and instantly made me feel welcome. We talked through my previous experiences, discussed future ideas I had, and she gave me a fabulous cut and style quickly and very reasonably priced. The salon itself was clean, cozy, and felt like a place full of friends - as the two stylists chatted between client conversations, interjecting stories and shared experiences. I went here for my first trim after my hair growing back after chemo. It was not very long, but needed a trim and dye. The cut was good, but the color was not so great and was running down my face for a few days. She also did not bother to blow dry and I felt awkward with this short cut soaking wet. It was not a good feeling, as I was already self conscious. Reconsider going, you can get better. read more

This review is especially for Brenna. On August 8th, my fiance and I were to elope at the Travis County Courthouse at 2:30pm. That morning, I was scheduled to get my hair and makeup done at 8am by April-Kelly Cashion (who was recommended to me by a stylist friend). We were scheduled to have an elopement photoshoot, then the ceremony, then more pictures. She flaked. Woe is me, the poor bride who was left to do her own hair and makeup on her wedding day, when one of the best photographers in Austin would be photographing her. I was livid. Through my rage, though, I saw a light in the darkness: what salon do I know of that specializes in gorgeous pinup styles? Bettie Bangs, of course! Somehow, the stars aligned, and the gorgeous and talented Brenna had an opening that would put me at the shoot just in time. She listened to me rant and rave, and after only an hour and fifteen minutes, I had an amazing 'do with some victory rolls and perfect pinup makeup! After seeing the results, I begged Brenna to do my hair and makeup for our big ceremony on September 20th, and she obliged. She quoted me a very affordable rate and was excellent at communicating with me to make sure everything went off without a hitch. On the morning of the big day she was punctual and in a great mood, and I had a blast, despite my nerves, as she made me beautiful once again. This was my first experience at Bettie Bangs but it won't be my last! Kelly was my stylist and she is wonderful. She listened to my requests then offered a few helpful suggestions to tie it all together. The salon is clean, tastefully decorated, and overall a pleasant place to be. I would recommend them to anyone looking for a permanent haircut home. They are honestly priced too, and will not add on surprise charges at the end of your visit. We can all appreciate that. I have to also add that I've had bangs for almost a year now and I have never loved them this much! I read some reviews here and decided to give them a try. Big MISTAKE! Kristen did a dry cut on my hair. I went in with dry hair and she sprayed it down with water. (I don't like to pay extra to have someone "shampoo" my hair). Since it was still moist when I left I was not aware of the horrendous cut I had received. I could not believe that the layers were so uneven and lopsided. She was not there when I called to ask if she would take a look at the haircut so I left a message. When I didn't hear from her after a day, I called back. AGAIN, a message was left for her, but I never heard from Kristen. Because my hair looked so incredibly terrible, I had to go pay someone else to repair that awful haircut. read more

Wow! She does not disappoint. First of all, she is just the most lovely person. I've been to this salon multiple times to have my hair cut and colored. It usually always come out really well, so I'm not sure what happened with my cut last time. I had my hair colored, and asked for shorter layers. I didn't realize until I went to style it myself that one side was completely different than the other. It looked like a chunk of hair had just been accidentally cut off. I emailed the salon directly asking for some kind of help and never got a reply. I know they won't give me a refund at this point and I don't really want to cut more off, so I guess I'll just be wearing it up for the next few months. Unfortunately I do not think I will be returning to this salon, I have a few issues that have come up. I had my hair colored here recently, and to do the color I wanted, bleach was required all over my very dark hair. My hair is naturally curly and I was worried about the damage, knowing some would happen but my hairstylist assured me it would only be a slight texture difference. Seeing as how I normally do not frequent salons, I trusted her opinion. Now she let me know that she might not be able to finish because she had a client right after me and it would take a long time to do my color, I was totally okay with that. I sat for a while while bleach was processing, and and in that time her next client came and decided to shorten her appointment, my stylist let me know that she might actually be able to finish my color, perfect. Except I wish she would have just told me she didn't have time for me because it was very obvious that she was rushing through the bleaching process, there are a few spots that she missed, and neither the bleach nor the color was very even. I'm only supposed to have dark purple at the roots yet I have light and dark throughout all of my hair, my hair is not really naturally curling anymore it is only a frizzy wavy texture. Not worth what I paid ($300+) at all. read more

I have been in Austin for 8 years and in that time I have tried several different salons. I have a hard time budgeting, let a lone legitimizing, $80+ for a hair cut, but I still want my hair to look decent. So a few months ago I decided to try out Betties Bangs, hoping it'd be the end of my search for a hair-home. I had looked on Yelp for something close to my house, and less than $45. You know what--Yelp was right. This place is awesome. Today was my second visit (first time I've ever returned to a salon in Austin--first time in 8 YEARS). I decided I'd wait to Yelp to see if I returned and to see if my first experience was a fluke or a trend. Its clear it is a trend. I see Chenoa and I have never had a stylist I liked so well--even when I was a teen and loving my hair. I went to her thinking I was going to cut all my hair off because I'd been showing other stylists photos of long, layered hair cuts and no one was willing to cut the layers for me. The other stylists would tell me layers are too hard to maintain and they wouldn't layer my hair like the photos (what? yeah, they wouldn't--very bizarre). Anyhow. Chenoa made my hair look like a frickin Pinterest post. I love my hair for the first time in years. I don't feel like a dowdy soccer-mom with Stevie Nicks hair, no more witchy woman. I'm much more Jessica Alba. Today for my return trip my daughter was concerned I was going to cut all my hair off--but I feel like the desire to hack of my hair is so far behind me because I'm no longer frustrated by stylists who either can't, or won't, cut my hair like I want. I feel like I can rely on Chenoa to continue to make me look and feel beautiful. I'm truly grateful. And she is a total steal. Seriously. Less than $60 with a 20% tip. I'm a fan for life. I first found this salon online as it was voted one of Austin's top salons! I checked out their yelp, Instagram, and asked around if anyone I knew had gotten anything done from them before. I was very intrigued and decided to make an appointment. I had been wanting to go blonde for a while (I'm a medium brunette) so I was counting down the days. I drove to Austin (40 minutes, not a huge deal I don't live in Austin so I figured it would take a while) And got there and met my hair stylist Ashley! She right off the bat was incredibly nice and asked me what I wanted. The first thing that came out of my mouth was that I wanted to be blonde and wanted to know the best way to do so to not completely ruin my hair. I also had some pictures of girls with brown roots and blonde hair (I wanted to keep my roots the same since I knew it would grow out) and she suggested a balayage. I asked her how much it would be and she told me $120 I believe? That didn't sound too bad so I decided to go ahead and do it. I asked her if that would make me blonde and she ensured that it wouldn't get me all the way there, but pretty close. The entire appointment Ashley was so nice and talkative and we really connected. I was very excited to see the final outcome. When all was done I looked at my hair and it definitely looked good and lighter! I really enjoyed it when I walked out of the appointment. However when I got home the first thing my boyfriend said was "I thought you were going blonde". Now after having spent $150 (including tip) on my hair, I was very disappointed when no one in my life even noticed I colored my hair. I sat with this for about a week when I was so frustrated I called Ashley and explained the situation with my hair. I told her that I wanted to be blonde and didn't feel like I was anywhere near. She agreed to go up higher on my roots again for me FOR FREE !! how sweet of her I thought! We made another appointment for the next week and I drove out to Austin again. We did another round of the same treatment I had gotten the previous week. She didn't charge me however I wanted to tip her anyways because she was nice and did it for me for free. I told her again that I wanted to be blonde so to go higher up on my roots. When it was all said and done it looked really good! I still wasn't blonde but it looked higher up, just not high enough. After a couple of weeks I really started to notice that after all of that, I STILL wasn't blonde. Now after 2 rounds, and $200 later, Im still very much a brunette. I called Ashley again and explained pretty much the same thing I did the last time to her over the phone (that I loved what she did, but was still not blonde) She said that she did not want to damage my hair and if we do another round of the balayage then she thinks it will be lighter. So if I want my hair to look the way I envisioned in my head I am going to have to spend $300 to do so. I did have a really good experience, but I don't think as far as my hair goes, I'll be going back. I know my sister has gone from brunette to blonde, much lighter than mine, and only spent about $150-200. I think Ashley is a wonderful hairstylist, however I didn't receive what I was looking for, not even close. I'm still very much a brunette and that is the frustrating thing about it. Though their location is seemingly hidden in the corner nook of their shopping center (their sign is very hard to see) I couldn't have expected better service. My sister and I had signed up for an online deal (along with half the city) and so I expected a long wait. I got a wash, color, cut and style and was in and out in an hour and a half. Loved my stylist (Brenna). I will for sure be back. You will love the laid back atmosphere and even more the fact that they host numerous charity events throughout the year apparently. I have two daughters, one in college and one in elementary and she cuts all of our hair plus my wife's hair, and she is very particular about who cuts her hair. So I found this salon by accident and WOW, am I ever happy to have found this place. Getting a girls haircut last minute on a Saturday was a lot more difficult than I thought but Bettie Bangs Salon came to the rescue. Its my daughters birthday celebration tomorrow and she was in need of a last minute haircut and our usual spot was not available. Upon walking in is a very cute and well decorated salon with an even more pleasant group of people inside. Kristen was nice enough to squeeze my daughter in for a quick cut and I'm so thankful for her. My daughter is a huge tomboy and usually hates going to "girly" places but at my surprise, when we walked out my daughter said " I can't wait to come back and get my hair cut again, she was amazing". As a male single parent raising a girl, girly things are not my specialty but Kristen definitely knew what my daughter needed and helped get her the exact cut & style she wanted. Like any other girl, I take pride in the way I wear my hair although I may not always wear it well. There was a point 3 years ago during which I just wanted a change from what I always did and wanted to try highlights ... I happened to drive pst Bettie Bangs while running another errand so I decided to give them a try and I have been going here ever since. My 1st ever stylist was Stephanie, the owner , with whom I just had a haircut and she was great. The next time round, I happened to get an appointment with Ashley for my highlights, and she understood my hair in a way no one else has - this isn't a diss at the other stylists here- they're all very very good, just that Ashley and I clicked. So every 6 months I make an appointment with Ashley who works wonders for me. Most recently I wanted a complete change and gave her a vague idea of what I wanted, one that she executed so perfectly I can't stop looking at myself in the mirror at this point. Their prices are pretty reasonable considering this is a "proper" hair salon. They sell hair products here and only use the ammonia free color. My appointments have always been on time, I've never been neglected (as with some of the snootier salons) and these ladies and gents take pride in the work they do. Highly recommend. read more
