I applied to adopt a specific dog from this shelter. Linda let me know that dog was not a good fit,…read moreso I thanked her and let her know to put my application on hold. A week later she called me while I was at work saying she had spoken with my landlord and that my apartment did not allow pets. I was quite confused because I had never heard of the woman she had spoken to, and I had asked her to put my application on hold and was now midway into adopting a dog elsewhere. I tried to calmly get to the bottom of the miscommunication, reminding her that I had sent her written proof of my pet policy over email, and that this was not my landlord she had spoken to. I suggested maybe it was a wrong number, or a new employee at the leasing office. She snapped at me "Would you just be quiet and let me talk!" At this point I told her to withdraw any of my information from her system, and never contact me again. I called my landlord and she said she had never spoken to Linda. This strange miscommunication should never have happened, as I had already requested my application be put on hold. It also could easily have been resolved if Linda had listened to me and conducted herself with professionalism. I am so happy I will be picking up my dog tomorrow from a more professional shelter. For these reasons I can unfortunately not recommend this shelter. But please, adopt (elsewhere) don't shop!

I have worked with Linda and Ed from Gerties Small Dog rescue for several years. Reading negative…read morereviews makes me feel sad. Linda and Ed are marvelous, honest, and very hard working and really care with a massive heart about what they do. They are strict about requirements to adopt from them. That is only because they want to do their very best to make sure any adopted dog is in the safest hands possible and that potential adopters are fully prepared and able to take the best care possible of any dog they may adopt. It is a lot about the dog and minimizing return to shelter situations. They really do dig deep into potential adopters, again this to make sure any adopted dog will be safe. Linda and Ed have made Gerties Small Dog Rescue their life, they have an excellent track record and are well respected in the community as well as within animal and rescue circles.

I see there have been some negative reviews- know that they are operating with volunteers and are very low-budget. With that said, the volunteers I worked with were very nice and doing their "job." They want to know that you will will provide a loving and safe home before adopting. You will be "screened" and need to wait a few days before taking your new kitty home. There is also an adoption fee, they need to cover costs. The sweet cat we adopted was in a foster home and clearly very well-cared for. She was socialized with other pets and the owner gave her lots of attention. We are so happy with our new kitty, Phoebe Katz, THANK YOU!

I honestly don't know why anyone would give this place a good review. After no one responded to my…read moreon line application I went in person. They had me fill out a written application. Then I got to see the cats. The cat I was interested in was listed as gentle and loving. The gentleman who came to get her out of her cage had to call another staff to help him because he said she was "difficult". They let you interact with the cat you choose in a small room in the back. The room was crowded with random furniture and generally unpleasant. I understand that cats can be really nervous with strangers but there was no way to tell what her temperament might be in these surroundings. They offered to have the foster call me to talk more about her. Again, no call, no response. I'm guessing some of the people in there were probably volunteers but they didn't seem to know much about the cats in there (or much about cats in general). All in all it was a really disappointing experience. I ended up adopting from another agency.

When I called they said they didn't have my pet. I gave them my phone number just incase and when he was brought him, by someone who had no permission to, they purposely chose not to call me. They then said to me and the co-owner we're not permitted to have him returned to us. They also lied and said the co-owner went into Lollypop yelling and cussing. This is a lie because Manuel has never been to Lollypop Farm. This just proves what I've been saying to Manuel for years; there are no decent White people in Rochester This means if you're in a bad marriage or whatever and your violent ex drops of your beloved pet as revenge they're not giving it back cos they sure didn't care to bother letting me know or returning our pet to us when he was illegally brought in May they all suffer from stage 4 cancer and may this facility be shut down, and trust me read all the 1 star reviews. Also, I assist police departments on solving cold case homicides. I said to a homicide detective in another region of NY I'll never never assist on cold cases in Rochester because Fairport, NY police work for Lollypop Farm and well, yeah this and other 1 star reviews explains all you need to know

Some of that can be overshadowed a bit by the rather surly woman who works at the desk. I do feel bad for her as I'm sure it's not an easy job to do but it can definitely dampen the experience. Beyond the staff and volunteers, the shelter itself is depressing as hell. The two rows of kennels that face each other in the middle are intimidating to walk down and the dogs really seem to trigger each other, very stressful environment. The building needs a HUGE makeover. Also, It smells awful, even when you first walk in. I understand there are animals there but the whole lobby doesn't need to smell like urine and various other unidentifiable smells. It doesn't even smell that bad where the dogs are contained, why so gross out front? Anyway, I'd give five stars because I love our dogs so much and would def support from them again but had to take off a couple of stars because the building itself and overall mood is quite abysmal. It seemed there have been efforts lately to change that but they've got a loooong road ahead of them.
