Because of that foundation, my kids entered public school confident, independent, and ready to learn. We even skipped TK because we knew they were already prepared -- and the transition went smoothly. This is my first-ever Yelp review, and what inspired me to write was a small moment that happened several days ago: I was struggling to roll up a yoga mat when my almost 10-year-old daughter walked over and said, "Mama, let me help you. I know how to roll it up. I learned at Beyond because that's what we did every day after nap time, we rolled up and put away our own blankets." Then she confidently demonstrated exactly how to roll up the mat like a pro! This simple moment stopped me in my tracks. Five years after graduating from preschool, she still remembered and applied something she learned there--not just the skill itself, but the confidence and independence behind it. To me, that is the lasting impact of Beyond Montessori! My daughter joined Beyond Montessori shortly after turning two and stayed until she graduated from preschool. Before joining Beyond, we were trying to find a suitable preschool. We visited several so-called "Montessori" schools in the area, but none felt right. We knew we wanted an environment that respected children, encouraged independence, and nurtured curiosity; not one focused primarily on academics at such an early age. When we visited Beyond, we were immediately drawn to the spacious playground, the garden, and most importantly, the atmosphere. Meeting Ms. Sophia was what truly convinced us. This was during the post-Covid transition period, and I truly appreciated the stability and care the school provided. Long overdue review but I had a recent event that reminded me of how bad this school was. My son went to this school 7 years ago but the reason I pulled him out was because another child bit him on the arm. He had a deep bite mark that I discovered when I took him home from Beyond Montessori. My husband and I asked Sophia about this and she said no one was aware of this happening, didn't hear a kid scream or cry which I find highly unlikely given the deep mark he had on his arm. Also, a male teacher who got fired informed me that they do not like writing incident reports to keep their files clean. Beware at your own risk. This was some time ago but if it happened once, it could happen again. Oh and Sophia also kept telling me for some odd reason that my son had a big head. I thought that was odd to make such a remark about a kids physical appearance. Hopefully, she is still not commenting on the appearance of the kids enrolled at her school. I have two boys who attended this school and its afterschool program until the pandemic hit since 2015. This school exceeds Montessori standards, with teaching plans based on authentic Montessori curriculums and language immersion. They also teach Chinese culture and background, translating common nursery rhymes into Chinese to help children connect the two languages. My older son has been a part of the Beyond Montessori family in Dublin right from the beginning, almost 5 years now! My younger son has attended for about 2 years himself, and will likely continue for a couple more before it's time for him to move on. Both of them have learned so much, especially as they've developed language skills in the immersion Montessori program. I am constantly blown away by the language progress my older son has made to speak, read and write in Mandarin at an ever improving level. To my knowledge there is no program anywhere nearby that would have had similar results - it's simply phenomenal to hear him speak so well. And I look forward to that with my other one as well. It's not just the language either. I'm constantly surprised at what they've learned at school to lay the foundation for continued learning, whether that be simple things like buttons, zippers, shoe tying, or more complex things with math, problem solving and English. Sure, it would be great to have more progress reports automatically, but the school is responsive to requests to assess and report where your child stands across a broad spectrum. Why is it so successful? Put simply, it's the novel immersion program approach in the Montessori framework that Beyond Montessori has created. It's different from anything at other schools. Rather than a vocabulary-based, traditional approach, it teaches the languages in context. Even if my kids don't know the Mandarin words to respond, they still understand and act on the instruction. A couple of examples: a couple of years ago I was dropping my son off one morning. As he put his stuff away, he spoke to another boy in Mandarin. Even in the moment I thought that was pretty cool, but later I was surprised even more when I asked him about it. He told me that the new boy spoke no English and to help him putting his stuff away he needed to speak Mandarin to him. Wow. And then, just 2 weeks ago we were down in LA waiting to cross the street for some morning coffee. Connor just started speaking in Mandarin for 3-4 sentences as we waited (very cool!) and then I asked what he was saying. He said he was just explaining how to wait for the lights, green and red, to know when and how to cross the street. Again, never would've asked him but I was floored how he knew the language in the context of everyday life. Of course over the years we've seen turnover: teachers we loved, teachers we liked, even some that we weren't as crazy about. The thing to keep in mind is that their approach relies on no single teacher to be successful. The program perseveres through those changes and I'm glad we have stayed with it to reach where we are today. After all, teacher turnover is one of the few constants at every preschool and daycare..that's just how it is. The Beyond Montessori program structure provides a teacher the opportunity to adapt their approach to be successful in it. It requires the teacher be open, adaptable, flexible and willing to change the rules, and possibly their mindset, from their training or experience. I've seen it process as it happens with the teachers we've had there, young and old, successfully and unsuccessfully. We didn't go into Beyond Montessori even looking for Mandarin - I really just liked the feel and structure of the program. I always wanted my children to be bi- or multi-lingual, but at home it's pretty much English. We speak no Mandarin, and while I do my best to muddle through some Spanish with the boys, that's as much as I can do. Is the school perfect? Of course not. There are always ways to improve. Is it for every kid? Not necessarily but more importantly it's not for every parent. Ask questions and scope it out well to understand how it's different from your other options. Our kid started at Beyond Montessori a month ago. We toured a lot of school around the tri-valley area and this one made the most impression to us. The teachers are diverse, the curriculum is great and most of all, it's very clean. It has been great and we are so glad we chose it. After the first couple of weeks, we noticed a lot of differences. Our kid is more talkative, seems more confident and sleeping much better. One of the main concern of ours is always the nap. It takes a very long time to put our kid to sleep and teachers here spend a long time helping our kid sleep in the first couple of weeks. After that, sleeping is much easier and it even improved sleeping at home. Another thing I noticed is that my kid learned how to put on shoes, washing hands, putting dirty towels away to a destinated location, the basic stuff. We could never have taught our child these skills if it won't for school. My child even made a simple fish artwork that I proudly put on the fridge now. The teachers always talk to us about our child when we go there in the afternoon. It's not like they are giving us a report, but more like a conversation. They will tell us what we need to do at home, ask about our concerns and if there's anything they need to improve. Overall, we couldn't be happier to have chosen this school. read more

My daughter has been attending Beyond Montessori since she was 2. She is now 3.5. We love it so much here that we enrolled our son a year in advance to ensure that he would have a spot when he turns 2. We originally toured the school before my daughter was born. My husband and I were so excited about the curriculum that we enrolled her at 6 months for a spot when she turned 2. Now, a year and a half after she started there, we know we definitely made the right choice. Ms Sophia is passionate about teaching, and she works hard at developing her staff. We have seen our daughter progress from a 2 year old who was still learning to communicate with words to coming home singing Chinese songs. When I talked to Ms. Sophia about reinforcing the Chinese lessons at home, she gave me lesson books and learning tools, and guided me on how I should teach them to my daughter at home. We enrolled our 2-year-old son at Beyond Montessori in the Fall of 2014 after attending an open house over the summer. At the open house, we were able to speak with the staff and get the educational backgrounds of all the teachers. The teachers are well qualified, with Early Childhood Development training and have earned BA's or Masters degrees. Over the school year, our son's speech development really began to blossom. He is now a chatty young man and likes to count in Spanish and Mandarin. He has learned social grace and is sharing amongst his friends. The children are independent and know their responsibilities, even at a young age. The recent graduates are at the 1st and 2nd grade reading proficiency level in English, Spanish and Mandarin which is amazing! The school also offers cooking projects, cultural studies, yoga, music classes, gardening and composting. The program is well suited for following Piaget's stages of development; where the child learns at their own pace, but still learns sequentially. Manners and grace are well taught throughout the day. During snack time, the children sit and wait until everyone is served, sing a song and then proceed to eat. Moreover, the physical space of the school is inviting, clean, and well organized. It's not overcrowded with toys or sterile from any imagination, unlike some other schools that we visited. The play area is AMAZING! It is surrounded by redwoods and has a big gazebo that offers afternoon shade for the children. The program director Mrs. Sophia is wonderful with the children and is always looking to improve upon her program. The staff is warm and inviting and really know the children based on their individual personalities and preferences. When it comes to mandarin immersion programs, it seems to be really slim pickings out here in the east bay. I was thrilled to have found Beyond Montessori and not only does it offer mandarin immersion, it offers spanish immersion as well. Mrs Sophia Jai, the School Director, is an excellent communicator about her school and program. I have enjoyed my chats with her about the montessori method, her own teaching philosophy and I appreciate her passion for educating and nurturing these young minds. She has carefully crafted her curriculum and has personally trained the teachers to follow the program. The teachers are all well qualified and there is a biography of each of their qualifications as you enter the school. My daughter attended a traditional preschool previously and is currently 4+ and so coming into a mixed age group, which is a Montessori philosophy, was new to us but she has adapted well. The school covers a broad range of topics; which at first I thought may be a little advanced for the younger kids aged 2+ but learning is afterall through exposure. The teachers definitely work hard to keep up with the curriculum and I have seen my daughter progress in her phonics and reading of simple words, she was able to sound and blend the alphabets and I was impressed and she told me Mr Steven, the english teacher, taught her that. She seemed better with her simple arithmetic and came home singing an addition song that Miss Jennifer taught her. I like that they are using creative methods to teach concepts so that learning is fun and memorable. She even sings the Beyond Montessori school song. =) Other wonderful things about the school is that they have diverse programs throughout each months - yoga, cooking, music, and weekly show and tell. I think these are all great exposure especially when as a working mom, you would like to provide them the opportunities to bring them to such activities but just simply don't have the time. The school also has weekly communications about the new things they learned at school. Their play area is also amazing and it is out in nature and shady and if offers many activities for the kids to do, interact with nature or just run around. I love the place! Our son started in the school several months ago and he totally loves it! The program is amazing, the director, Mrs Sophia, is wonderful, thoughtful and very gentle with children. She hired only the most experienced teachers with extensive experience and Montessori backgrounds. It is also notable how all teachers work in great coordination with each other. Tri-lingual program helped our son to start speaking not only our native Russian and English, but also some Mandarin and Spanish. He loves to sing and sometimes he comes home and sings in Mandarin or Spanish, which is a great way to learn for a three year old. The most important for us when we were enrolling were two things: low student-to-teacher ration and gentle kindness and compassion from the director and the teachers. Best curriculum I've seen to date. My son seems to be learning something new and actually absorbing the learnings - singing months of the year, days of the week songs, etc. My son has also improved his Mandarin speaking skills over the last few months since attending. We speak to him at home but when he was in English only speaking schools his Mandarin was struggling, so I know the immersion program here is working for my son. He doesn't speak as much Spanish but every child is different and possibly he is speaking Spanish I just don't understand it! :) The playground is very shady (which is a huge plus in Dublin) and the toys are very simple which allows the children to be more creative and be closer to mother nature. He has also acted up the least while at Beyond Montessori, compared to the other preschools. He obeys most of the teachers there as well, they are good at communicating with children, especially the head of the school - Mrs. Sophia Jai. She is the reason why I enrolled my son as she has a very loving and advanced philosophy on teaching and she puts a great deal of effort and time into the curriculum and training her teachers. The school is also very clean and my son hasn't gotten sick as often as at other preschools. Over the last few months, more students have begun to join the school as word is getting out on the merits of Beyond Montessori. I expect they'll be at full capacity soon, so definitely reach out and get a tour and I believe you'll find a good home at this preschool. I look forward to many more years here! read more

We enrolled our child at Beyond just over a year ago and have been pleased with many attributes of the school. Coming from a strictly traditional Montessori program in SF I can say Beyond really has a nice balance of traditional Montessori values, cultural awareness and fundamental skills one hopes to instill in their child. They teach the children to respect and love nature, they encourage exploration with reasonable boundaries and they provide an enriching environment to learn/work in. The overarching theme is indeed harmony! The teachers are knowledgeable, the aides are helpful, and Sophia has been delightful as a Director. I particularly appreciate the milieu of the school which is clean, open and organized with literary decor all of which is complimented by classical music playing in the background (I often feel relaxed walking in after a busy day at work myself). The large playground offers my active child many options for running, riding, teetering, exploring, etc. Combined, it's a nice balance between classroom and nature I think. The language component is tricky as it's not a full immersion program (in my opinion) but I'd say we've also noted an appreciable improvement in our child's comprehension and use of the Chinese language. Our child has gained familiarity with Spanish, speaking some words/phrases and singing songs as well. I think it's important to realize that Beyond isn't just teaching languages, but they really do focus on cultural enrichment using Montessori techniques. We are skipping TK and keeping our child at Beyond another year as we see much value and success with this program! It's been almost a year now since our daughter started preschool at Beyond Montessori. I remember first visiting the school and sitting down for a few hours, and leaving feeling that we finally found it. The give away was, all the other preschools felt like they were managed by babysitters. Whereas in BM, everyone is an educator. And that was important to us. Through time, I've also learned to appreciate the exchanges I have with Miss Sophia (school's directress) whether we were discussing our daughter's progress, or sharing about our experiences growing up. My younger cousin currently attends this school, and I can tell he is having the best time learning here. When I dropped him off in the mornings, he would naturally jump into his morning routine of greeting his teachers and playing with his friends at school. Sometimes, he would forget to wave goodbye to me because he would get too excited to start his day here. From my observations, my cousin truly enjoys the friendly atmosphere the school offers. Aside, based on the conversations I had with them, I think the teachers here are qualified. Potty training has been smooth, and etiquette has been decently taught. Since atttending, my little cousin has also grown out of his "everything is mine" phase. He is more willing to share his toys and is more mindful about his words. In the long run, I think he will continue to develop good social skills under the guidance of his teachers. It's crazy to mention that my cousin has also been picking up Spanish and English. He often sings children songs on the car ride home, and will teach basic Spanish to me. Beyond also focuses on Mandarin; even though we speak Mandarin at home, I can hear the improvements my cousin are making in his native language. Overall, I am glad my aunt and uncle decided to enroll my cousin at this school. This is the place for him to grow and spend his youth. The great reviews that past 2018 are no longer valid. Our child went to Beyond Montessori for about a year. It was okay when we started, but it's really sad to say the school is going downhill quickly due to poor management. I have chatted with other parents and they agreed. At one point I saw a ton of kids with not enough teachers, hence the high turnover rate due to burnout and heavy workload. Most of the good teachers I know were gone which is very concerning. The remaining teachers can only be described as individuals who show up for the paycheck, they stand and watch as the children play, pickup after them, rather than teaching skills or imparting any knowledge to the children. What also bothers me is the teachers avoid saying hi or even make eye contacts with parents when we walk in or walk out. Ok I guess this place does not promote social skills here, but I didn't know how my child was doing at school because the teachers avoid conversations. Imagine how children can be happy if the teachers are not providing loving, educational, and attentive care. I believe they recently had a city/county inspection and had to change a signature policy (if parents miss a signature, they charge a fee). I hope the school owner would take this warning that, for safety reasons it is far more important for teachers to know who is walking in and out of the school/playground than pick errors from a book of signatures to charge parents. For multiple times I have walked in the school to drop off my child and there is only one teacher there with too many children and she's too busy to even make eye contact. It is also misleading that the place is called a Montessori school. The owner/director is the only one that has Montessori Credential but she's barely there. Not to mention my child don't really learn much Chinese/Spanish while they also call themselves a "Language school" that with a curriculum of 40% in Chinese and 20% in Spanish. All I can say is don't keep your expectation higher than sending your child to a day care center, and hopefully the teachers at least start paying attention to who's walking in/out and keep all the children safe. read more

I have enrolled my son Bryan for almost three years now, and I have got to say, in these three years as a parent I can not be as proud as I ever was for my son... he has progressed so well in math as we have figured he has a strong interest in it. Not only in math, my son has established a decent foundation for both English and Mandarin and a slight foundation for Spanish. Beyond's curriculum is what i would stand by and i am very happy with their staff looking over my child. The environment is very welcoming and "green" as their play yard isn't just normal play structures its "closer" to nature and very down to earth and serene. This place is the best! My son has been attending here since he was 20 months old and has learned so much since he started here (currently 2.5 now). The fact that he is exposed to Chinese, English and Spanish is just the beginning. There are many activities that the school provides to have all the students well rounded (culture, math, stories, puzzles, dancing, art, cooking projects). As a bonus, teachers actually teach manners (!) and he has become a very polite little man. All the kids are very happy and the owner (Sophia) really puts her heart and soul in making the school the very best. You can tell this is her passion and it's noted by the way she understands every kid's behavior/personality, her choice of teachers and the curriculum that she created. I decided to make an updated review after staying a year with Beyond Montessori due to the greatness and how much benefit my son has received from the teachers and director. My son has language delay, but after a year of study at this school, he can name a lots of words in Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese(it's his mother language) and English. Even the speech therapist at school district got amazed by his big progress after a summer. My son is very slow adoptive and did having some behavior issue between the time; but the school did help me and my son to learn his mistake and solves the problem which is very important than just asking for accommodation. I am so proud to see his independence and big progress.To make statement short, school is nicely organized, curriculum is courses, teacher and director is responsive and easy to work with. Not truly a tri-language immersion program if you're looking for that. Of all the staff that watch the children, most speak English only including the lead teacher. There is circle time taught in English, Mandarin or Spanish however the days we observed, English only. We asked our child what languages were spoken to him during his time there, he said English. Curriculum schedule and who's teaching and when is not up to date in what they publish either. Double check and interview all the teachers if you're planning to commit to this expensive preschool. I was very picky at choosing a preschool for my son. I've looked for so long and when I came across Beyond Montessori, I told my husband right away, this is THE one!!! Beyond Montessori is a preschool that offers an Immersion program. I wanted my son to attend a preschool that would teach him more than just English and Beyond Montessori has that. They offer 3 different languages; English, Mandarin and Spanish. AWESOME! Another reason why I love Beyond Montessori because I really support their teaching philosophy. I really agree that if you teach kids all the right things, such as cultural literacy, mannerism and humanity at an early age, you are building and giving them a strong foundation. It is really sad to see that today, most schools do not teach our children cultural literacy, mannerism and humanity at an early age. This is a reason why most children don't have respect toward their parents, the elders and or just people in general. I know we cannot put all the work and responsibilities on schools. However, it schools would teach these, I believe our children would be a better person to our society. We as parents, we MUST also continue to do our part to continue to teach our children the basics: table etiquette, cultural literacy, humanity, and manners. Pretty disappointed with this place, just few days ago they change a signature policy (5$ for missing signature) to extract money from parents. They retroactively forced everyone to sign contract addendum, this is just crazy of course I had no choice. This is really not a first time they try nickel and penny us. My child has attended this school for three and a half years now. I am very pleased with his progress in terms of learning. The teachers are always respectful and provide a professional environment for both parents and students. Also, he seems to enjoy this Montessori a lot -he would always look forward to the hands on activities, specifically their culinary activities. As a parent, I feel very reassured sending my child here knowing that he is very well taken care of under the staff and is provided a quality education. I personally would definitely recommend this school to prospective parents looking for Montessori for their own children. read more

We enrolled in this pre-school but dropped finally. The only thing I regret is that we didn't withdraw my child sooner. We were attracted by the curriculum design and at that time we were also looking for a caring and gentle environment for my child. But my child really felt depressed at this school and cried hard in the morning on the way to Ms. Sophia's school. We thought she just needed some times to get used to the new environment so we kept her there for a while. But finally we made a wise choice to withdraw her because there were some other dramas going on in parallel. Director and some teachers were warm before you enrolled but turned to be cold once you were in. Maybe they smile to you if you drive a fancy car but that's not my case. I don't see much "Montessori" there rather than a commercialized pre-school. Not all of the teacher were Montessori certified. read more

Beyond Montessori was first recommended to us by a friend. After intensive review of the curriculum (as well as comparing with other pre-schools) and seeing how fluently my friend's kid can speak both English and Chinese, we decided to enroll our son to Beyond Montessori. He has been attending the pre-school for 6 months now. In such a short period of time, he has transformed from a spoiled and ill-behaved kid to a polite and well-behaved little young man. He has learned to clean-up his toys after play, listen and follow instructions, and minimize his temper tantrums. He has also learned to speak English, sing English songs and translate most of them into Chinese (since we speak Chinese to him most of the time). My wife and I were very surprised and excited to see such impressive changes since it took my son almost 2 months to adapt the pre-school environment. We look forward to seeing him grow and thrive in Beyond Montessori and beyond that. This is a great pre-school that we would recommend for parents especially for those who are looking for a true tri-lingual (English, Chinese and Spanish) immersion program. read more

My wife had been a Montessori teacher for 10+ years. So when we were looking at schools, we were very critical in how we evaluated. We wanted one there was a good balance of those principles at the same time wanted our child to be more immersed in other languages. Beyond montessori has turned to be a great school with a strong curriculum. The teachers are caring and attentive. Additionally, the school has good security and is very clean. They charge potty training fee but not really training,when I pick up my child he said they didn't help him change diapers,they tell us bring gloves by self $100 potty train fee not included gloves?Sounds so cheap. When my son started with Beyond Montessori last year, he was not at all comfortable adapting to preschool environment. Thanks to all the caring teachers, he was able to gradually overcome the anxiety and start to enjoy the activities there. I'm so grateful for the teachers who patiently comforted my son when he was crying for long time. Once you talk to the program director, Ms. Jai, you'll be impressed by her deep philosophy and great passion for early education. They have a well balanced Montessori curriculum. And I especially like their emphasis on teaching good manners and self helping skills, which I don't see much from other preschools. Everything there is kept clean and organized. The playground area is big and shady, which is very nice for the hot summer days in Dublin. I definitely recommend this preschool to anyone. read more

This truly is an immersion education program. As a former educator, I have been trained in and participated in several teaching techniques. As a parent, I have researched many immersion programs. Here, all classes are taught, directions are given, questions are asked and answered in the language of that particular lesson. I have watched several lessons over the past six months and I am very pleased with my daughter's progress. My daughter, who is American( with no Asian or Hispanic heritage nor do we speak Chinese or Spanish in our home), is speaking and singing in Chinese and Spanish. Her Chinese pronunciation is so great that when we are in public native speakers complement her on her speech and pronunciation. The staff members are very caring and attentive. I am very happy that I found this school and would recommend it to any parent interested in building a strong tri-lingual foundation for their child. read more

My daughter has been enrolled at Beyond Montessori for 3 months since September 2015. It is not immersion at all. Not only that but the 40% Mandarin figure they cite is 40% of the weekly lessons, there are 2 lessons a day so 40% equals 4 hours per week! My daughter came from a true immersion preschool in Berkeley. She spoke fluent Mandarin. After a time I noticed she no longer spoke to us in Mandarin at home. I also noticed in the morning during free play, when they got the kids ready to go outside and when they played outside all the teachers spoke to my daughter in English, even the Chinese one. When I started asking questions, the true story came out. If you are looking for a preschool, you'll be fine here. But if you are looking for your kids to learn Chinese or Spanish, look elsewhere. The Director has also been incredibly defensive and unresponsive to my complaints. She has not even provided me with a daily schedule which I have requested repeatedly! read more

Currently we have three kids at Beyond Montessori, one in preschool and two in after school care. Our two younger ones started going to Beyond Montessori about two years ago. It is amazing how much they have learned at Beyond Montessori. Before they went to Beyond Montessori, they did not speak any Chinese. After two years, we can carry some conversations in Chinese at home. Beyond Montessori not only has really good academic programs for the children but they also emphasize good manners and behaviors. We noticed that our two younger children have developed great interest in reading and have learned lots of vocabulary that surprise us quite a bit. This is not all. the school director, Mrs Sophia Jai and her teachers are the keys to the success of their programs. They are truly educators with hearts and mission to help the children. Whenever there are issues with our children, they are so willing to talk to us and resolve issues in positive ways. They are so good that we recently transferred our 10 years old from another after school care to them. We will see what wonder they will do to our 10 years old. read more
