I called the company that offered trenchless sewer lateral with the highest rating and over 1,000 reviews. They were ready to send someone out to inspect and write a quote until I told him that we lived in San Leandro. Apparently, the City of San Leandro Permit process is not as user friendly as some other cities. I've heard that before from other contractors. Not because the inspectors are rude or demanding but because there's simply not enough of them and that slows down the process of starting and completing jobs. The person that I was talking to on the phone suggested that I called Beyond Plumbing. While their review count is very low, their score is very high. With nothing to lose, I called and left a message. We had a few conversations on the phone, met at the house, talked about the scope of the work. He arranged for another company to come out and clean out the sewer lateral to the sewer so a camera could get an accurate picture of what we were actually dealing with. That done, he offered two quotes. One based on straightforward replacement without complications. One with some trenching in the street if necessary to complete the job. Once we agreed, he called out PGE and others to come mark their underground utilities. This past Tuesday, I received an email with a couple of documents to sign for the city. Once signed and returned, we were scheduled to begin work at 9am on Thursday morning. Signage was placed on the sidewalk to restrict parking on Wednesday. The crew arrived on time Thursday and began their tasks. They came en masse in two vans, a pick-up and two larger trucks, one pulling a medium back-hoe. With two guys working as flaggers, they proceeded to do their thing. In order to maintain our sanity, we checked with them and then left, returning Thursday afternoon around 5:30pm. All the signs were gone. There was a metal plate in the middle of the street. I had received a text around 12:30 telling me they'd be done around midday and the only thing left to do was final inspection. That is dependent on the City Inspector. After inspection, the plate will be removed and the street patched. In the meantime, the connection to the sewer has been completed and we wash clothes, dishes and shower as desired. We live in the Oakland Hills, and what started as a "small" sewer leak (that we were going to repair ourselves, HA!) quickly turned into a total replacement of both our sewer AND water lines. Both lines are about 175' down a steep slope, but Beyond Plumbing handled everything smoothly and professionally, explaining everything that they would be doing, why they were doing it, and how much it would cost. My neighbor actually found Beyond Plumbing, Inc. In order to get his remodeling project signed off, my neighbor was forced to do his sewer lateral. Turned out that our sewer pipes were joined under MY driveway. So, I was forced to do mine also. On one hand I could have been totally pissed, but then I felt like I need to get mine done anyway. Fortunately, I had enough money to pay for it. What would I have done if I didn't? This ended up being a complicated job. They thought they were doing one regular sewer lateral and then they find that they have to do 2. Can you imagine having that kind of wrench thrown into the works? They had to pull another permit. Beyond plumbing are truly GREAT! We recently purchased our home and had a quote in our paperwork for our sewer lateral replacement from Beyond Plumbing. After having a horrible experience with another company, I decided to give Beyond plumbing a try. Before I called, I decided to check their reputation on YELP. The reviews were decent and so I decided to contact them. Our first interaction was very positive. Tony responded and set up a time for one of his techs to come out immediately. Luis showed up on time and ready to resolve our issue. He thoroughly examined the issue and came up with a plan. A couple hours later, the issue was resolved and he provided recommendations for follow up. We later called them back to address another issue (The joys of home ownership) and yet again, they came out, fixed the issue, and charged us a fair price! After a couple months later, we were ready to address our Sewer Lateral. Of course, the timing coincided with this awful COVID-19 outbreak. Had a great experience getting our sewer lateral inspected and replaced by the team at Beyond Plumbing. The owner (Tony) helped us get scheduled right after the holidays, with only a couple weeks of lead time. His crew was awesome -- super friendly and organized, and completed everything on time with no problems with EBMUD and city inspections. Our property is steeply sloped in the Oakland Hills, with a backyard that's difficult to access. The Beyond Plumbing team went the extra mile to deal with getting their heavy equipment into this difficult area, and even ended up replacing our city sewer connection (which is not normally required for sewer lateral compliance) at no cost to us, which is normally a $550 job. They told me the plumber guy who did the service was a part time back up worker for the company. Then, when they did the job I guess they discovered the work was more complicated than they anticipated BUT they did not charge me the extra $1,500 it would have cost me to complete the job. $1,500 was still less than the 1/3 I mentioned earlier, too, so either way they were a good deal. I called Tony in a bit of a panic on a Friday afternoon. A different plumber/sewer rooter company had given me a run around and tried to charge me for sequential and increasingly expensive fees to "clear" an obviously broken sewer main/lateral that definitely needed to be replaced urgently.
