Having had to buy a house generator when age undermined my ability to cope with BG&E unreliability with a portable one, I was not particularly impressed by my 24 years experience with them. If there was one thing I hated more than anything else in Baltimore from my time spent living there, it was BGE. From incorrect bills...to being put on hold for hours at a time...to rude customer service...to shady field employees...to service technicians who never showed up for appointments...to regular bill increases of over 20% per rate increase...BGE had it all, with some left over to spare. I was paying roughly $350 per month to BGE when I lived there...moved back to NY, now my electric bills are under $100 per month. BGE is an awful company to work with. Their website is confusing and difficult to navigate, their over the phone customer service is practically non existent, and the way they bill is just horrifying. Who sends you a bill the day before it is due? That's why I switched over to E-bills through my bank. Still, BGE manages to screw that up by combining the amounts of past bills with this one and trying to double bill you, all the while NEVER showing on the Bill itself where the extra cost came from. UPDATE...They did it again. Another estimated bill with no rhyme or reason to what they are estimating to. If you look at LY the temperature for the month was exactly the same yet they estimated we used an additional 2000 kilowatts. REALLY. They are making money off of the estimated bills at the expense of the customers. If they cant read the bill then they should not charge us until they can. Maybe that would make them actually read the bills each month! Needles to say I got a $1200 PLUS bill I now have to pay. read more

About two weeks ago, we had trouble with our A/C. Our smart thermostat was black so we had no idea what to do. My husband checked all the breakers but that wasn't the issue. I read online to reboot the router but that didn't work. After trying a few things we read, I called BGE. The agent's first question was about Home (I didn't know that was the name of their program)...did we have Home? I told her that I didn't but that my a/c wasn't working and that the outside temp was in the 90's...she said we would need to wait 3 days for service since we were part of "Home". I explained that my husband who is 70 had some health concerns but she said that she couldn't override the system. Earlier appointments are for Home customers (Don't we all pay the same rates of our electricity?)....I asked to speak with a supervisor but she didn't have the capability of transferring me and I was told someone would call back. A supervisor called back and started the same conversation,,,implying that I should be a Home customer....and I may want to consider signing up...She stated that she couldn't change the appointment schedule inspire of our age and health issue. We would have to wait...We finally called our thermostat company who were so helpful and was able to determine that there was some water from the humidifier in the furnace pan which shut the a/c off...after questions and some pics, the problem was solved....BGE just wanted to sell a Home plan and send someone in....terrible customer service. I can't believe that BGE supplier washes its hand of any issues with customers....what a terrible thing...just created a system where people are forced to pay more to get service. I had a thermostat installed in the home by BG&E 2 years ago and it was supposed to be programmable from the internet, but has worked about 10% of the time during the past two years. I have put in 3 request to have it resolved and it was never resolved. They then came out with a different programmable thermostat, which I arranged to have installed, but they had to reschedule the first time, and then the second time never showed up and never called and I sat at home waiting for them for nothing. I have now rescheduled for a third time, which is 3 weeks out. read more

This place is a joke. The sales people tell you one thing when you sign up. Then they tell you something different a year later. When you all them out on it all they say is "I'm sorry but you are out of luck and just going to have to wait." My spouse is military. We are moving soon. We were told that a year after we got this service we would get our deposit back. When I called to ask I was told we wouldn't get it back for another 4 months because that's when our account goes for review. When I asked what would happen when we moved and she said we were sol. Wish we had a choice of who delivers electricity. BGE would be the last choice. They are on a countinuous downhill spiral for reliability. Constant electrical outages and most occur in good weather. Our electrical service is worse now than in the 1950's. Repeated outages, patchwork fixes and never an attempt to resolve the root cause of these repeated outages. Predatory company, they prey on the poor. They require deposits, which they lie to your face about when they will refund. They say IN WRITING that they will refund it after a year if you pay on time every month. I paid on time every month for a year, and then was told I wouldn't even be reviewed for a refund until 17 months after I opened the account. This same piece of communication ALSO stated that I would get my refund after 1 YEAR. I pointed this discrepancy out. BGE sent me a duplicate of the first email. After that, no matter what I asked or stated, BGE just copied and pasted the same statement at me, until I asked for a supervisor. Then they simply refused to respond to me anymore. read more

I recently had BGE come out to put in a new smart meter. The old one had been disconnected because I had a new AC unit installed. Well the tech that came out proceeded to hook everything up, and then left without a word. After he was done my AC unit would not run! I called customer service and was told appliances aren't something they do! My brand new AC was working fine before they messed with it! Thankfully my neighbor is an electrician, and after looking at it, he told me the tech that did this didn't splice the wiring making it incapable for my AC to turn back on. So thanks BGE ! You not only did something incorrectly but refused to send someone out to even look at it, and took ZERO accountability! Thankfully I was able to take care of the problem since they refused to! Made appointment for Tuesday, they called me and moved it to Thursday with a window from noon-6pm. At 2:36 the technician called me and left a message, I missed that call because I was in the restroom. Saw the miss call and called them back around 3-ish. My appointment was already cancelled because I missed the efking call. The only way was to reschedule, who does that?! Give a window of 6 freaking hours and cancel the apointment because I missed a call. What is that 6 hours efking window for?! I took a day off for this, and waited since noon, now it's only 3:59, they can't get anyone to come out here before my window ends...absolutely completely rediculous!!!! read more

Bge customer service is horrible. I called them to I was going to move but it ends that I wasn't going to move ,they cut my power off . After I called them the guy I spoke to was sooo rude with me he was talking like he didn't like his job . He told me that I was supose to pay again another $250 security deposit and he didn't care about me at all. I called back one lady told me that I was not supose to pay security deposit. I am moving to a new apartment. Because the last tenant apparent defaulted on their bill, I am unable to move into my new apartment until BGE has verified vacancy. Problem is they won't verify it until I can let them into the unit. And they have a 4 window "you must be ready and waiting for us window". So I have to get my keys in the morning and sit around and wait for them (and not move in yet), then they will confirm nothing is in the apartment and that is it vacant before I can move in. So I am supposed to pay a day's worth of rent and sit around and wait up to four hours for these shady aholes to start my service because of some lien the last tenant had. What kind of B.S. is this? I asked them to verify vacancy with my landlord before hand and they said no, you have to work that out yourself. read more

Baltimore Gas and Electric Company (BGE) This company is not trust worthy when it comes to security deposits and billing issues. I have encounters(2) different issues with this company and they were unable to explain why the add charges placed on your account before the billing period ends and you have a zero balance. Please don't let this company convince you to do a auto payment every month because you will be sorry, They stole part of my security deposit after (1) complete year, $210.00 with.24 cents in interest. The company tired to apply the entire amount to a zero balance but got caught when I called them to refund my deposit in full as agreed the year prior. BGE took it upon themselves to remove $74.00 out of the deposit and apply it to my pending June 15 bill that has not even been process, which I consider is theft and deception. When they were called on it the second time they stated that they didn't see a problem because the money will be there for the next billing period. BGE are the scum of the earth! I had my power shut off yesterday with no notice because my address was flagged as " theft if energy". I've lived here 13 years. After talking to the service department I was told only the investigator assigned to the case could give the ok to turn my electricity on and it could take 7-10 days for that. Seriously? No AC or anything up to 10 days?? I told them my5 month old grandson live with me and I can't keep getting a hotel room so so he can be in a cool climate so he won't have a heat stroke or something. I mentioned that to them and didn't care one bit. Finally the investigator called me today and said the flag was because as of 3/1/13 I have been stealing electricity. I told the lady that's the day my ex wife moved out before our divorce and the bill was in her name. The same day I called and had an account set up in my name. I put a deposit down ( not going to go there) and have paid my bill every month. So how does one steal their own electricity and pay for it monthly? Yes they are idiotic asshats like that. Long story shirt I showed the inept investigator the error of this crap companies ways and the power will be restored. Not on the same day mind you that would make too much sense they're doing it tomorrow. So another hot night to suffer for their error. I also asked will I be reimbursed for my spiked food since it was your mistake? They said they don't do that. Well tomorrow I'm contacting local news agencies to let them know about BGE's practices. I paid my two bills, as the paper bill said. The online version says I owe more, but I only found out by getting a shut off notice. I'm unsure why they went so fast to threaten me. I am not too happy. Could I suggest maybe the company communicates better and gets their online billing portal to link correctly with their billing department, which prints and mails paper bills. Horrible service. Tried to get connected online and said it would be ready by friday. When friday comes I call to get a status update and they inform me my house is flagged because the previous tenants didnt pay there bill. So I have to spend the day trying to gather the documents needed to send them and on top of that its a holiday weekend so of course i cant get an answer till tuesday on my request for service. Sunday i finally received an email telling me i needed to send in documents. So not only would they have informed on the weekend when they closed and no one there to help but I wouldnt have been able to submit all my documents until tuesday. So there internet service is totally messed up. Might as well call for everything with them. When i called tuesday of course i got there standard answer of i need to wait 72 hrs. So it will be about 2 weeks i been waiting for power. Something as important as electricity should not be looked at as if you applying for a credit card or loan. Even in those cases i can get an answer and service faster. Wish there was another company so BGE would get there act together. read more

I am happy to add to the string of 1-star reviews, based on my recent experience with BGE's on-line payment system as well as their customer service (or lack thereof). I switched from paper bills to the on-line system 2 months ago. When I received my first on-line statement, I attempted to pay directly from my bank account. The web site prompted me for the account number, routing number, and "name on account," all of which I entered. Two days later, I received a notice that the payment had been denied by the bank. Thinking that I must have entered one of numbers incorrectly, I tried again, and this time the payment went through. I then signed up for automatic monthly payment, using exactly the same account information I had previously used. Well, when this month's bill was due, the automatic payment was again rejected by the bank. I called the billing department and talked to a representative who was somewhat helpful. Her explanation was that since our bank account is held jointly by myself and my wife, I would actually need to enter both names (even though only one of our signatures is required on checks). I did point out that this is NOT explained anywhere on the web site but indicated that I would try it. Unfortunately, when I logged in to the web site later that day, I discovered that because I had now had 2 returned payments, my account status has been changed to "cash only" for the next year. In particular, they will not even accept a check for payment, even though none of my checks to BGE over the past 19 years have ever bounced. When I called them today and explained the situation, they told me that the only way to have the hold removed is to get Bank of America to fax them a letter indicating that the fact that payment was denied was not due a mistake on my part. In other words, despite my having made a good-faith effort to pay my bills, they are not willing to own up to the fact that their web site instructions are unclear, instead treating me like some sort of deadbeat. Clearly all they care about is make no money, with no consideration for their customers. read more

Can I give no stars? Senior citizen, customer for over 40 years. Husband lost job and unemployment ran out. Recently got new job, but more than $28,000 so we don't qualify for help. Made two late payments in last year. Have to pay $400.00 security deposit. Not behind in payments, just late, day after due or a week late, don't owe anything. Won't accept any less, only willing to break it into monthly payments. How wonderful! $400.00 is food and medicine money. Thanks BGE! read more

I moved in December of 2016 to Baltimore from Michigan for work. I was very surprised that BGE wanted to charge me a $67.00 security deposit for my first 3 months of service (I've never heard of such a thing from an electric company). They said if I ever cancelled my services with them they would deduct my last bill out of the total security deposit I paid and my check for the remaining deposit would be mailed out a month after my last bill. I decided to move back to Michigan the beginning of June and called to cancel my services in May for June making sure to provide the forwarding address for my check I would be expecting from the remaining security deposit. July rolls around and still no sign of my check. Around July 15th I call BGE again and get myself through the frustration of trying to talk to an actual customer service representative to speak to someone that told me my check was mailed out on July 12th and it would arrive to the address I had provided and that I should be expecting it in 7-10 business days. Let me take a moment to tell you that this check I was expecting in the mail was for $195.00. I am a broke college student now and $195 is a car payment for me. $195 to an average person trying to do something with their life is a lot of money to just not get in the mail!!!! Anyways, August 4th rolls around and still no check. I call BGE and finally reach someone to speak to just to be told that my check had made it safely to my apartment address in Baltimore! I cancelled services BECAUSE I MOVED BACK TO MICHIGAN!!!! Seriously?!? I confirmed my address to send this check to when I cancelled in May and then again in July....but it was sent to the address where I'm no longer living... I cannot wrap my mind around that. So after giving the billing customer services rep my address for them to send my reissued check to he said I should expect the check in about 5 days. I tell him that is unacceptable and I needed them to priority ship the check, that I needed it sooner. He told me they were unable to do that so I asked to speak to his supervisor. After being on hold I spoke to a supervisor who had worse customer service skills them the guy she was supervising. She said she had no control over how fast they could send out the check and that I'd just have to wait to get it in the mail. I ask her when I should be expecting it in the mail and she said in 7-10 business days (twice as long as the last guy said). So now here I am on August 18th exactly 10 business days after that unprofessional phone call on the 4th. The mailman just left and surprise.. surprise.. still no check in the mail. I have $3.00 to my name because I planned on having this check in the mail by today! I call BGE for the 4th time. The representative said they mailed it out on the 15th! That's 11 days after the last phone call! And I should be expecting it in 10-14 business days now! I am soooooo exhausted, discouraged, and sadden by the lack of professionalism and care by BGE for their customers! I paid the security deposit and all of my bills before the due date and made sure to provide an address for the check to be sent to. I seemingly did everything right on my end I avoid this kind of frustration. It would be nice if their employees were on the same page as far as when to expect something in the mail and where to send it! The way they have this end of their business set up is ridiculous! I bet it'd be run better if they were the ones getting the check in the mail! I don't expect to get an apology from BGE themselves but it'd be nice if somebody from BGE agreed that this isn't okay. I'm a friendly person and this is the first ever online review I've ever posted, this company has brought me to it! Sooooo glad I will never have to deal with this company again! i am not going to tell a story how ever i will say this they trick people and they mighty good at it i was with them for a yr and i just move out i told them i wanted my power off on the 15 of June. a week before i had my power turned off i told her i would like to cancel my service. she said what date would i like to cancel on i said the 15 because i move that day she said ok very nice about it i moved that day. this is all how it began two days later i came back to get a few things my power was still on??? so i called them they said it should not be let me take a look and so i fell for it like like a chump. i came back later the next day keep this in mind i drove 45 mins to check to see if my powers on alot on gas. i called bge again ask them what the hell is wrong with you i want my service gone stop sending power they said ill take a look i said come here now and show me i told them not driving 45 again they said ok well they took 1hr to come to the adress keep this in might there HQ is 20 up the road i was mad as hell with the guy. the guy was surper rude and i told him to fix it didnt care how mad he was he was not paying for my WATTS any way it was finely done with now part 2 i am waiting to receive my security deposit now i put down 250 last year guess how much i got back 13.65 yes you guest it i was surper piss off i called them up ask how the hell they got that number ?? they keep going around and around my questions i was so tired of the lies and bs took 150 as a cancellstion fee i didnt even know there was one no body even told me and did the same thing around and around i told then there money hungry and i am going to replace them with a wind turbine and told them i never want to have any thing to do with you ever agian Please think twice and i hope this helps any one who reads all this if you dont read all this do your research first read more

BGE cut off our power with no notice. When we called to find out why, they explained that the address had a large balance on it that had not been paid. We explained to them that we had moved in about a month ago and that the person who did not pay the bill no longer lived at the residence. BGE explained that an investigation had been opened on the residence and that the power could not be turned back on until the investigation had concluded, which would take a minimum of three business days. We have actively been paying our bill and they will not turn the power back on until the "investigation" is over. This is causing unnecessary hardship us. We are not able to do laundry or shower with warm water, and we had to throw out our entire fridge and freezer contents. We tried to explain to them that we are active duty military and I am pregnant! They obviously don't care about their customers and the hardship that they put onto them. read more

Worst company EVER and they deserve a negative review! I have been trying to get a refund since beginning of April when I shut my service off. I updated my new address with BGE at the end of April (twice by email) and I still have not seen my refund yet! Then May 18th I got a letter from them (addressed to my new address) stating they made an error with refunds and sent two checks (apparently this was a company wide mistake not just for me) so they stopped payment on both checks due tot he error. Why not just stop payment on one? THEN I called them on May 22nd and asked about when a new check wold be mailed and the incompetent person told me they didn't have my new address...crock of shit! So the lady told me a new check would be issued and mailed to the correct address and I should have within 5-7days. Today is June 5th, still no refund check, so I called AGAIN! I talked to two people a CS rep and a supervisor. Both of whom gave me two different answers. I was told due to BGE's mistake of mailing duplicate checks I have to wait 30 days for the stop payments to go through and then I will be mailed a new refund. WTF! So all the customers waiting for our refunds are being punished to wait even longer then expected due to an error on BGE's behalf. The kicker....the first rep I spoke with today told me the check would be going to my old address...I have no clue when I'll get a refund or where the hell it is being mailed to as the supervisor indicated the check hadn't even been mailed yet. BGE, please get your act together and get your reps on the same page so when customers call in seeking help they get the correct information. Is that seriously too much to ask? I have been with BGE since 2011. My first year with them was ok, normal billing rate with the budget billing, and service after storms. I deployed, then came back and bought a house. My second time having BGE was completely ridiculous. Now, I know strange things happen like lighting striking my "green box" electrical box. Obviously BGE needed to come and fix the wires running from the box to the house. It took 2 1/2 weeks for them to come out. They had to get to the wires under the driveway so they had to drill 5 holes and dig up a 3x3 hole in my driveway. I was told "We will be back in 5-6 business days to fill in." After FOUR MONTHS of calling they finally sent someone, just in time for winter. Winter time...My bill goes up from $120 to &190 because I was "being billed from last Nov-Jan." I didn't even live in my house last Nov-Jan. When I purchased the house the electrical was paid and I was provided proof of this. So when I asked why I was being billed for a time that was already paid and I didn't live at the house, the response was "That is our policy." I asked to speak with a supervisor and was not transferred to one, instead I stayed on the line with the same lady. I called back the next day and got a different response to why I was being billed for this time frame and it was "I owed more money from my budget billing."I asked to be emailed a copy of this and the last policy that I was previously told. Got nothing. I pulled my records and it was said that same was already paid off. The lady insisted that I owed more even though it did not say it on my bill. Being in the military I was hardly ever at the house, my kw usage for two months (Oct-Nov) was 340-560. Now that is having ONE light on in the house, nothing else. My bill was higher than the last THREE month period when it was 1237-1298. I asked to have this explained. I couldn't get an answer. Instead, the lady called me a liar and that I was reading my bill wrong. No, I see the kw usage and the money doesn't add up. I asked her to add it up over the phone and explain it, she repeated over and over "Is there anything else I can help you with?". Really, my customer service representative did this. Months go by and my bill is only going up for no reason. I had to rent my house out due to moving. I asked when the next time that my meter was going to be read since I would be renting my house out and I could verify that the correct reading was taken. I was told no one comes and it's all electronic. I didn't know that. I asked what the meter reading was before I transferred service. Wrong reading. I was billed $599.09 for a cancelation fee. This company is a complete joke and I would like to see their policies on how the billing, cancelation, and meter readings are done. Seems like no one I talk to at BGE can get me these. Customer service is joke. Billing is shady if not illegal. I would very much like someone other than myself to look into these practices. read more

Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE) is also business killer and job killer. Last week due to no payment Jeff from BGE came to my business disconnect the power while customer was eating. We were force to tell the customer that they have ten minutes otherwise there won't be any power. I have requested BGE that I have spoke with BGE and I got grace period till November 10, 2016 but the person came was very rude and unprofessional telling me that there is no record I called and I have ten minutes to pay or else he have to cut the operation of my restaurant. I understand I owe money and trying my best to pay them off. He wanted money on the spot that kind of person work for BGE. Now my business is close not making any money. But now BGE Executive is having cocktail and champagne how much profit they are going make end of the year by killing businesses and jobs in Maryland. I hope Governor Hogan office is aware of it what is going in the grass root level for struggling businesses in Maryland. I wonder what BGE do with the fuel fund for poor or force to take advance from small business for three months (in my case). read more
