It's been more than a decade since my first wonderful experience at this fantastic bike store, and once again it did not disappoint! From the easy to use website with up to date information, to the person answering the phones who knew exactly what was in stock and had the bike I was interested in locked up outside ready for me to ride, it was an absolute pleasure to buy a new bike with zero snags. The selection in this store is much bigger than it might first appear- they're known for cargo bikes and an increasingly large supply of electric cargos, but they have kid's balance bikes and the lovely step through commuter bike in the pic, too. Their website is very easy to search for what you want in advance. You can also get all the things you need to put your new bike in use from racks, bags, baskets, bells, gear, and safety supplies. It was fast and easy to select high quality items and they attached it all so my bike was done and ready to take home that day. Another huge advantage over the first time I bought a perfect bike- bike lanes! You can try your new bike in a safe bike lane before cutting back to the store on a side street then a less well traveled road. Gives you a little descent, little bumpiness, and a little ascent so you can get a real feel for the bike. I love that there's no pressure, just a plan to help you find what works best for you. I own multiple bikes, brought an older but still solid Italian Bianchi bike I ride daily for short errands there to get advice on tune up, but was mansplained by some 20 year old that my bike is basically trash and belongs to the junkyard. Really really nice people working at this place. I came in and the woman at the front of the store asked me if I have appointment made, I said that I don't have one and she said that unfortunately they can't look at my bike because they are really busy and they have appointments schedule until the end of the year. I understood that and I was ready to leave, but few seconds after the other woman who I am assuming is the owner, said how she can check my bike. I didn't know how to explain what is the problem with bicycle, since the English is not my first language and I just said that it makes a loud sound when I turn the pedal. She fixed it after a few minutes and did some other fixes too that I didn't ask for. The charge was really small. Highly recommending them! read more

This review is shamefully overdue considering that I've loved this shop since it opened. Carice is one of the nicest, hardest-working people you'll ever have the pleasure to meet, and this shop is a beautiful little gem that Massachusetts - nay, New England - is lucky to have. As for my own experience with Bicycle Belle, I bought my bike (a Paper Bicycle) from Carice in August 2013. I had a pretty good idea what I was looking for going in, but I took almost every bike in the shop out for a test ride in order to make sure I knew what I wanted. Carice was helpful and patient, even letting me test ride the Bakfiets (Dutch box bicycle) just for fun. I decided to go with one of the Paper Bicycles that she had in stock, with the addition of wooden chainguards and a rear rack. Carice ordered and installed it all for me, keeping me updated every step of the way. When it was done, the bike was a thing of beauty (especially with a new Brooks leather saddle). That was far from my last visit to the shop, however. I've popped in there frequently to browse and see what's new, as well as picking up a few additional accessories for my bike. Then the Belles Who Bike monthly gatherings started, which were fantastic. I was only able to attend a couple because I had a baby and then moved across the country, but I plan on becoming a regular once we're back in the area. Please keep them going, Carice! Finally, as a new mom, I love that Carice is such a strong advocate for biking with kids. I was only able to talk with her a little bit about it before I moved, but even that was very useful. I live 3 blocks away from this place. The first time I went there I brought my bent mountain bike rim to be straightened. They said that they couldn't straighten my rim. A few years later I brought a bent wheel from my road bike and wanted a replacement. They did not have one in stock so they dismissed me. But I asked if they could order one. They said that they could not. This is a true story. So I don't know what kind of bicycle shop cant fix wheels or order them. They have a lot of urban bikes on display but no nomad or mountain bikes so maybe they just stick to their ? Specialty? Bikes? Bicycle Belle is the closest shop to my house, so I've stopped by a couple times when I needed a part or a hand with my bike (I do most of my own service, as I enjoy that, but I'm no professional mechanic). The first time I came in and asked if they could do a repair I'd never done (which now that I've done it myself I know would have taken them about 15-20 minutes). The owner informed me, rather curtly, that they only work on the bikes that they themselves have sold, which is a policy I've never heard before at a bike shop. OK. The next time I was in was because a bolt had come loose and fallen off my bike while I was riding and I happened to be right there when I realized it, so I dropped in to see if they could pop on a replacement for me -- I've never known a bike shop not to do at least that. The mechanic in the shop, who was clearly new and didn't know all the -- shall we say, "unique" -- policies of the shop, kindly looked around, picked up an old bolt from the floor (which, by the way, is completely fine so long as its head and threads aren't stripped out, which they weren't), put it on in about 15 seconds, and told me to have a nice day. The owner had come in as the mechanic was fishing around on the floor for a bolt to give me, watched the whole thing, and then, having observed all this, pulled him aside to scold him *for not charging me*. The mechanic bashfully came back and informed me apologetically that the service would be $5 -- for a small used old fender bolt and fifteen-second install. This was clearly as much of a shock to him as to me. I've been to a lot of bike shops for a lot of things, but I have never been charged $5 to have an old bolt slapped on in an emergency situation. Bike shops almost always kindly do these tiny services for free and tell you to come back in and tell your friends about them. It's disappointing to have a bike shop so tantalizingly close to my house that is so completely pitched toward those who would buy/have bought one of the shop's rather expensive bicycles. I can only imagine being someone who doesn't live so close or know so much about bikes who might need their help in an emergency. I would urge the owner/s of this business to open up their policy somewhat to engage with those who might not have bought (or, likely in many situations, not been wealthy enough to buy) one of their bikes. read more

But hey if you're looking for a 3,000 dollar e-bike to transport your spoiled rotten kids to their overpriced private school then this is your place. However if you're hoping to go into a bike shop and come out with a penny left in you're name I advise you stay away. Also the staff is not enthusiastic to do small work on non "designer" bikes. I adore Bicycle Belle, and I feel very fortunate to have a woman-owned-and-operated shop in my neighborhood. I bought my first commuter bike here recently (a Biria Citibike) and it's been great! The staff was very helpful while I was picking out my bike, but it's really been the service ever since that's made me a fan of this store. There have been a few minor issues with the bike and installing various accessories that I don't have enough knowledge for, so I've stopped back for help about five times. Each time, the staff is so nice and friendly, and they've promptly helped me out with everything! If you buy a bike, you get a free 30-day "checkup," and then for the next year, all the labor on your bike is free (if you need to bring it in for anything else). I love this policy and it's great to know they'll be there for you if anything goes wrong. The rest of the store has a good selection of accessories, too - I bought a pannier bag, wheel lights, cargo straps, and a crate, so I'm totally set for biking around the city! read more

Great service and information! All I needed was new handlebar grips. I thought I could do it myself but for a modest price they suggested in a low-key but compelling logic that they could make sure the replacements for the original pair fit properly. They explained how the shifters might need to be moved and I had just a Leatherman with me and had to get to a meeting nearby so it worked out well for me. They also answered my curious questions about the electric assist bikes. All in all a great visit and I'll be back. That Gazelle looked very tempting! read more

I have a Dutch bicycle, an 'omafiets', that I brought with me on the plane when I came to the US over 20 years ago. I knew at that time I wouldn't be able to get a sensible all weather bike like that in the US. But getting it serviced proved to be a challenge as local bike shops didn't know these bikes, only Broadway Bicycles did but they didn't really have specific parts for it. I am so fortunate that Carice opened Bicycle Belle. She and her staff have the expertise and the parts, and my Dutch bike keeps going, now not alone on the Camberville streets anymore, as more and more people discover the comfort and safety of these well proven bicycles. I am dreaming of getting an electric cargo bike now. I highly recommend Bicycle Belle for buying a new cargo or commuter bike, and for repairs of these. read more

I'm a middle-aged dad who liked shopping at Bicycle Belle for a bike for myself. Deal with it. First, don't call them "ladies' bikes," they're "low step-over." And fellas, tell me again why it's a good idea for so-called "men's bikes" to have a top horizontal bar? Really? Did we lose a coin toss 100 years ago or something? True, I didn't need a box bike or a one-less-minivan bike, but Bicycle Belle clearly understands the whole "City Bike" genre: Safer, sturdier, practical, internal hub, easy-shift, visible, upright posture, low step-over. They had a lot of great choices and were patient in their explanations and generous with test-rides (be sure to bring a helmet). As it turned out, I found a used beauty on Craigslist, but was sure to go back to Bicycle Belle for all the other things a city bike needs: headlight, tail-light, mirror, U-lock (with cable) and, yes, a bicycle bell (brassy and clear). read more

Background: I'm living in Philadelphia, and I had my heart set on buying a Workcycles Gr8 (I wanted a cargo bike that is the same length as a regular bike, not a longtail, and it's one of the few bikes that fits the bill). Workcycles is based in the Netherlands, and it's quite difficult to buy their bikes in the US, especially on the East Coast. I attempted to place an order with a fellow starting up a bike shop in NYC, but he wasn't able to collect enough orders to make shipping costs from overseas make sense, and had to give up. Bicycle Belle was the closest Workcycles dealer to Philadelphia, so I decided to make a road trip to them to try out the bike and purchase it. Before my trip I had a couple of lengthy conversations on the phone with Bicycle Belle and then a long email exchange with Carice, first about the merits of purchasing a Workcycles bike, then about the Gr8 model, and finally about the pricing and specifics of each accessory I might want. Bicycle Belle was courteous, helpful, and resourceful every step of the way. I felt a bit snippy on the phone with Carice one day for unrelated reasons, but when I apologized to her she reassured me she didn't find me short at all. I needed a rear seat pad so that I could transport my girlfriend with a chronic illness, but Bicycle Belle didn't have the Workcycles seat pad in stock... happily they thought of using an Xtracycle "Magic Carpet" seat pad instead, which they did have in stock and was much cheaper. When I finally arrived at the shop I was able to get the bike set up and kitted out exactly how I wanted it, test ride it a couple times (once with my gf on the back and once without), and purchase it rapidly and with minimal fuss. The bike is a beautiful ocean blue, rides like a dream and I think I'm in love. I'm extremely happy with my experience at Bicycle Belle. Please go there and give them business so that they stay open and continue selling Workcycles bikes :) East Coasters shouldn't have to fly to Seattle or Amsterdam to get a quality Dutch bike. read more

Bicycle Belle is a new bike shop in Somerville. Despite not being able to swing a cat without hitting a bike shop in the 'ville, this new shop may actually bring a unique element to the mix. It is clearly catering to the cutesy crowd. If you imagine yourself on a new but vintage looking bike, maybe in a pastel or a bright color, wearing a polka dot dress and matching helmet, maybe with a baguette or tiny pug mix in your basket, then this is the shop for you. I'd been there on opening day, and it seemed like a very soft open. I returned just recently, and the inventory is still very low, and completely scattered (bicycle bells in three different locations). I think as she gets her feet wet, the owner will understand she has an excellent piece of the market here. Bicycle Belle should embrace the Anthropologie-inspired merchandising they are now just toying with. Artfully arrange your cute merch on rustic wooden tables!! Have a bigger selection of bike accessories. Stand behind the thing that makes you unique: be the bike shop for "that girl". The pics on Instagram are great (bike porn) and they show what's in stock. I finally found the perfect "classic" bell at Bicycle Belle because I saw a photo of it on Instagram and went in just a few days later. I was expecting it to be expensive, but it was only 7 bucks! The staff here is very friendly and I was happy with their selection of products. I did buy a tire pump for $47.00 and when I looked on Amazon I could get it a lot cheaper. I think if you are looking for a more affordable option maybe this isn't the first place you want to go. I was also irritated that when I stopped by to ask if they did bike tunings, they advised they only did tunings and repairs for bikes bought in the store. Maybe that is a common policy amongst all bike shops but it was a bit of an inconvenience at the time. read more

I had a great experience buying my new bicycle here! I've been to this shop several times, browsing, test riding, and agonizing about my decision to buy a new bicycle. They were very kind and helpful each time, even after the third time I left to 'go think about it' (I'm a grad student; this is the financial equivalent of a new car purchase :-)) Anyway, I finally decided to get a basic gazelle bike, but both the shop and the distributor were out of stock. But when the distributor said they had a fancier, more idiosyncratic version that they were looking to move quickly, the owner remembered that I liked all those old touches (rod brakes, generator lights) and gave me a call. I ended up getting the most gorgeous old-fashioned dutch 'oma fiets' with all the trimmings for less than the cost of a basic gazelle. That's one happy customer! :) read more

Yesterday morning I took a children's bike to be serviced at Wheelworks (Belmont) where I was repeatedly ignored. In fact, one employee walked past me asking, "Who's next?" And helped the man in back of me while I tried to get his attention. Soooooo, I decided to go for a different approach, and shop more locally. Which brought my family to Bicycle Belle where we were greeted by the friendly staff, who, despite being incredibly busy, were welcoming and very helpful. I think we were helped by the owner, who went out of her way to try to get our sons bike on the road that day. She put a kickstand on the bike while we waited, and helped us pick out new grips for the handlebars. She explained how to swap out the grips ourselves, and helped us order some new pedals when none of the ones she had in stock would fit. She even suggested that another shop might have the pedals in stock if we wanted them sooner. But we ordered with her, wanting to support her and the shop. While we were in the shop I noticed the fantastic selection of high quality helmets for kids and adults. I'll definitely be coming back to Bicycle Belle. read more

Now that I've been enjoying my new bike for a couple of months, here's a report on the shop where I bought it and its many accessories. I initially visited this neighbourhood shop solely for the sake of politeness, having decided in advance that the Linus Dutchie, much loved by mommy bloggers, was the right bike for commuting with my toddler. But the friendly, laidback and very knowledgeable staff at Bicycle Belle helped me to think a bit more about what I wanted in a step-through, were very responsive to my questions and concerns, and offered test rides on the inexpensive stepthrough brands they carry, the Bobbin Birdie and Papillonaire. The former turned out to be a surprisingly good match although I'd never heard of it before. I thought about my options over the next week, then decided to go back to Bicycle Belle and purchase the Bobbin Birdie. Bicycle Belle's staff had some helpful suggestions about registering the bike with local police and such. And when I declined the child seats they sell, opting instead to share my husband's iBert, they didn't bat an eye. The bike came with complimentary front and back lights. I've since made two return trips. Shortly after purchase a cable came loose and prevented shifting; it was fixed for free, on the spot. More recently, my kid's sudden growth spurt necessitated a new seat and all of the gear that goes with it (new rack, extender for panniers, panniers, double kickstand). The labour cost ten dollars, the work was completed in under an hour and we felt really safe and looked after by the smart, compassionate staff, who made sure we knew how to hoist our child into the seat, strap him in and so forth. Whether you are an experienced cyclist or just want a starter mum-plus-one bike (I'm definitely the second kind of customer), I cant' imagine a better way to start or continue a family biking experience. read more

Let me first say that I do not own a polka-dot helmet. Okay? My helmet is plain black and if it goes with any of my outfits, that's strictly accidental. But, I am a woman and I do like upright cruisers. I was not satisfied with the selection of uprights available at other bike stores (and at one, I was told straight out that hybrids are "just better," sigh). This shop has plenty of them. I bought one after multiple test rides and was told that service for the first year is free. I had occasion to test that theory since my shifter cable came out when I was putting a handlebar basket on. Sure enough, she fixed my bike for free. Didn't even ask me for ID, just remembered who I was. This is a good place, and it feels good to be taken seriously. I recommend this store especially for women cyclists and anyone who prefers cruisers. read more

I chose this bike shop to install a bike charger on my racing bike and hybrid bike... I came with two custom bike chargers they would need to install. One of the chargers did not work, so they worked closely with me to try and resolve the situation on a tight timeline... I was doing a demo for an event and only had two days to get it working. They were totally flexible and had high attention to detail... I was really impressed with the equipment they sold me... they had a replacement bike charger that was extremely high quality and they gave me a discount. I was totally pleased with their customer service and pricing. I was really pleased with my experience overall and you can not beat the location... which now has an awesome bike path right on Beacon street. read more

I am so excited to have Bicycle Belle in my new neighborhood! I love the idea of a lady-run bicycle shop that also does repairs and tune-ups. Before I rode a century last weekend I had my chain replaced and my shifter repaired. The shop attendants were friendly and helpful. They were busy with lots of repairs, so it took a couple of days for them to get to my bike, but this is to be expected for a shop of their size. They assured me it would be done before my ride and it was done a day prior. I look forward to stopping in in the future and maybe learn a thing or two about tuning up my own bike. read more

I just wanted to add another 5-star review in here to offset some of the other (strange in my opinion) reviews because these ladies definitely deserve it. My bike is a unique one to be sure, an antique english rod-brake "roadster" known as the Raleigh DL-1 tourist. They have always given excellent parts and real world service advice for this long-lasting but unfortunately nowadays rare bike. The selection in the shop is impressive and consists of high quality well thought-out stock. The people who have helped me have always been professional and a pleasure to work with. They are never pressuring and always friendly and informative. Heck, if they served latte here I'd probably stop by just to hang out. While this is clearly a store aimed at women, there are definitely great things for men in here as well. This is basically like the many high quality shops I saw while in Munich aimed at proper everyday city cyclists. Clearly more bike shops could use more of a "woman's touch" because this one is top notch. read more

Really hate to do this, especially for all the reasons mentioned in prior reviews (entirely owned/operated by women, awesome location and selection, etc.). I'm a novice biker but did a lot of research and parted out a 2013 Cinelli Mash Probuild fixed gear bike. I'm a busy grad student and the frame has been in DC for over a year. My Dad built the bike to spec at a local shop and shipped the bike in pieces to me. It was simple enough to put together but I didn't have the needed tools at my house and wanted a professional to assemble/look over for safety purposes. I got the bike together enough and researched shops within walking distance. Bicycle Belle was the closest, so, I literally carried the bike a little over a mile to the shop. The woman who greeted me was awesome but told me the bike wouldn't be ready until the following Thursday. I wasn't thrilled at the prospect of waiting over a week for a simple assembly but less thrilled at the prospect of hauling a half put together, $3,500 bike around Cambridge so, based on the reviews, I left it. The price was reasonable and I didn't think much of it. So, today rolls around and I'm super pumped to get the bike so, I walk to the shop and arrive promptly at 3p, the stated pick up time. The woman in the shop was the one who was going to put the bike together and it was pretty obvious she hadn't completed it yet. She mentioned waiting for my permission to order a part for the flywheel, a setup I explicitly told the woman who greeted me upon dropping the bike off that I wanted. She said that she would pass the information on to this lady building the bike and obviously, despite writing it down, my permission was still required to order a part that was necessary to set the bike up how I requested. Additionally, whether or not my permission was needed aside, the stated pick up time was 3p and the shop has had the bike for well over a week for a very simple task. I asked them just to put the bike together, I'm waiting now at a local Panera wasting my time because a business can't deliver on a stated promise and pretty much the basic task of being a full service shop. Don't waste your time, take your bike and business elsewhere. As I was writing this, get a call from the shop the bike is done.
