A shame this Big 5 closed in early 2026, they were my reliable local go-to. Their prices were always good (way better than Dick's or Sports Authority when they still existed), especially for shoes, which really matters when you have multiple kids who outgrow their existing ones every 6 months (or sometimes 3 months once they hit their teens!). This store's selection was always good even though they weren't huge (better if you include the website, but I like to try most things in person). And the staff was always helpful and knew their inventory pretty well. With this one gone, the next closest one is a 30 minute drive instead of 10, but I'll likely end up doing because the main alternatives are the new-ish Dick's a couple of miles north (except their prices are much higher) or... Amazon? Hell, no. Bezos-mart's mindshare and monopoly tactics are exactly what's killing my ability to shop in-person and locally, their customer service is lousy and their rep for always having the best prices hasn't been true for a decade+, despite a ton of their listings being Chinese fakes. read more

Zero assistance x zero customer service and add zero access to a restroom for customers equals a low zero if not a negative rating in my book. I remember the Big 5 in Daly City Calif...it had some great stuff. This Big 5 is very similar. Not a superstore but they have a great selection of most everything. I needed a exercise mat for my new house here and they had a fantastic selection. Plus I would rather support these guys than Bezos. Help was fine and prices are reasonable. read more

I bought a tent that I thought was NEW. Either way, I asked about their return policy and was told I couldn't get a refund, only store credit, and only if the tent was defective. It definitely wasn't new, and it was defective. It was filled with dirt, it was missing stakes, and smelled VERY strongly of urine (even after 2 days of airing it out). I won't be purchasing a tent from Big 5 ever again. Why would I return for store credit, when I don't want anything else from their store? I just want my money back. read more

Great Spot I come here occasionally to add to my workout collection. I picked up a nice pair of dumbbells here once, but I didn't see any heavy ones for sale on my last visit. It looks small and a bit unkempt from the outside, but it's fully packed inside. Definitely a unique shop. It's worth taking a poke around and seeing what's what. read more

Denver transplants: this is the place to get your starter gear! We had quite the harsh wake up call when we were shopping in Denver for ski gear. We are beginners and needed equipment that would do they job but wouldn't break the bank! We must have gone to 3 or 4 locations in Denver before driving out to the burbs to go to Big 5 Sporting Goods. A truly laid-back shopping experience. Staff is casual and relaxed as are The customers. A lot of odd lots and over-stock purchases of merchandise along with out of date merchandise. So what-- if you find what you need, they will probably save you money. They send out coupons for discounts as well but most purchasers seem to be unaware of the discount coupons. I needed two raquetball gloves. I first tried Dick's at Park Meadows. That store is a mess - merchandise randomly place on the floor, and no sales staff around to help. I found Big 5 online and happened to be driving by this store, coupon in hand. We were promptly directed to the right spot on the floor, but I could not find a left-handed glove. A nearby sales person overheard us and showed up with a LH glove (unfortunately inside was a RH glove). Then the manager approached and tried to help too. While they could not find the LH glove, we were treated to a "manager's special" and bought 2 RH gloves - and got to keep our coupon for later. This store is nicely laid out and has a good stock on hand. I felt WAY more comfortable shopping here for that reason, and the super helpful staff. Thank you, Big 5; we'll be back! read more

Of all the sporting goods stores Big 5 was the only one who sold interchangeable dumbbells for such a good price. I specifically bought the $40 40 lb. total ones (20 each.). When I came in a few days ago in search of them they weren't in stock and I asked the young black man working at the store (don't remember his name) and he told me free weights are in such high demand that they sell fast. He also told me the day the store usually gets shipments of them so I returned on the later day and found them in stock! Kudos to that employee for such helpful information, you just brought in a new customer! I'd be happy to return here for more equipment in the future especially as long as this current crisis persists. read more

Big 5 is the poor man's or (women's) version of REI minus the expertise of an REI staff. I can't say that I've ever had a bad experience at Big 5. As for a sporting goods store with great prices on things, if I need something in a split second I know I can come here and find what I need usually with no problem. The staff here is ok, they at least acknowledge you as you come in and will ask if you need help finding something. That's all I really ask for when I go somewhere to purchase something. Nothing more, dont hover over me or ask me the same thing ten seconds apart from the first time you asked me. Here so far when I've gone that hasnt happened. There's always a huge sale of some kind going on. Check the paper every Sunday as they have a huge ad each week. I've purchased many pairs of running shoes, as well as hiking boots, ski goggles and many other items from this Big 5. read more

This used to be my favorite place to buy sporting gear when I used to live in SF. This one sucks, it feels like you are inside of the movie "Waiting", young kids as staff and playing around throwing objects like they were in a park, no one greets you or ask if you need assistance, They have cheap stuff, cheap tennis parafernalia, and not to many to choose from. When I arrived, they helped me review the others they had to see what best met my needed. I never felt pressured to spend more mone, and they really knew the prodicts well. I love big 5 and partly because I live a mile away. I've been struggling lately with a Colman shoe. Bought three pairs and the last one just fell apart really quickly (3 weeks). I'm in construction so naturally I'm very rough on my shoes. I brought in a stinky pair of shoes to Kendrick the manager and he as outstanding. Explained to me I can contact Colman but then took the time to walk the entire shoe department with me and let me exchange a pair for a different kind. Yes, I walked in with no overhead money to invest so I couldn't get the shoe unneeded but he was a true rockstar that showed every sign of a good manager. I seem to have had a much better experience than Hans at this place; then again, I dropped by about 6:30 on a Saturday night after driving back from Colorado Springs. I'd decided I needed some new shoes, both normal and a pair just for working out, and a combination lock. I walked in and the place was pretty quiet, thank goodness. Outside of an occasionally overzealous sales clerk who may have been bored, but occasionally creeped me out with his questions as soon as I was done on the phone (like asking me excitedly if my brother was coming down when I left him voice mails about the good prices), the selection was excellent and the prices couldn't be beat -- Big 5 typically sells sporting goods and shoes, but shoes are where you can make out like a bandit -- even though their normal prices are extremely low, they were offering about 1/3 of their models at an additional 30% off -- there were so many $50-60 pairs of shoes priced at $20 or under I was too lazy to count them all. They have both "2nd tier" manufacturers and then the big names like Reebok, Nike, New Balance, and all the rest. Running shoes, walking shoes, tennis shoes, basketball, skate shoes...you name it. They probably have a secret shelf somewhere with ballet slippers too. :) They even have "service shoes", so like any good respecting person in a position of authority, you too can get some steel-toed boots (that aren't hiking boots) and kick the living hell out of whomever bugs you. ;) And all on sale. The running shoes I settled on were implied that they were $50 down from $85...that turned out not to be the case; there was an almost identical model that was however. But I liked the color scheme on the ones I picked out. Aforementioned salesclerk discussed with cashier...and I got it at the $50 price. Awesome. :) The 'normal' shoes were normally $55, I got them for $28. Don't be a sucker and go to places like Foot Locker, Dick's Sporting Goods, or any mall store/specialty sporting goods store. Check out these peeps first -- I got excellent service, people went out of their way to bend prices for me, and I walked out saving well over $50. I mean, unless you get off on some kind of ego-high paying full store asking price for shoes -- then by all means, go to those other stores. (Nice selection of combo locks, baseball bats, helmets, biking clothing, hunting stuff and other things too...) There are many locations around the Denver metro area, but this one happened to be convenient for my whereabouts at the time. read more

Great customer service! Walked in and saw all the great sales and everything was neat and orderly. I had called ahead and the salesman held a pair of hard- to- find shoe orthotics for us, called svenco, after I called the manufacturer in Texas to be told there would be nothing in a fifty mile radius, so I was very excited. Found an excellent pair of hiking sneakers for $19.00, reduced from 42.00. Found and used a 20% coupon from my phone at the register. Can't beat that! I'm coming back for sure. read more

I had a good enough experience here, after spending all morning trying to find somewhere with rollerblades, I finally stumbled upon this establishment. They had a pretty fine selection of blades compared to everywhere else I looked, for men, women and children! The customer service was great, but the prices were a little steep. This location of Big 5 Sporting Goods is about the same as the others I've been to in the Denver area. That is a good thing. I like consistency. I was able to find a couple of Adidas gym bags, a few Nike Dry-Fit Tees in my size and some accessories. They seemed to have a more comprehensive MMA and/or boxing selection at this store than at others. They have a fitting room. Free parking out front and a competent staff rounded out my pleasant shopping experience at Big 5. Greatest sporting goods store ever? Not really, but very functional and useful for what I needed on this trip. read more

The store feels like its straight out of the 1990s. The items throughout the store just reek of poor quality and shabby construction. The staff members look disinterested. I needed a pair of super cheap flip flops. I found them thankfully. I couldn't get out of that store fast enough though. I wonder how a crappy place like this survives. read more

I have generally found what I am looking for at Big 5 Sporting Goods in other parts of the country. The one in Denver on Colorado Blvd should be avoided for several customer care and service reasons! These include; 1. Being harassed with "can I help you sir" right out of the store. It is one thing to acknowledge customers and be helpful and quite another to stalk and harass. It crosses the line when employees stare at you, follow you, and even whistle at you as you try to browse through the merchandise. This has happened to be pretty much every time I have attempted to give this store another chance and buy something. 2. The previous reviewer could not have said it better. Employees are playing ball and visiting with their friends in the store. Management does not seem to see the issue here. I have even heard employees snickering and making derogatory remarks about customers to each other such as "when is this clown going to find what he wants?" 3. Needless to say, many of the employees are as surly as you can imagine. They are not fooling anyone hiding in their pleases and thank yous either. I have seen them flit with and even scold customers a lot. It is the type of place that makes you nervous when there are more employees working in the store than customers which is usually the case. My advise to you is do not disturb their party and darken their doorstep. I might return if I see a large sign that reads "UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT" indicating that things have changed. Keep in mind that I love Big 5s because I have found that this company offeres the best selection of the sporting goods franchises. Instead of choosing one of thier competitors I went to the other locations in the Denver area and received way better treatment, service, and selection. read more
