Parking is a nightmare, directed to the baseball gloves, but struggled to find the right size for my left hand player. Staff was MIA when I needed help. I get that there is no public restroom, but not very sympathetic response when directed to cart my 3 year old to another store just to come back and ask for help (which I wasn't getting in the first place). Good reminder why I shop online. Able to come home and buy the items on Amazon much easier, quicker and cheaper. Finally some good customer service at a Big 5 Sporting Goods Store. I came in to find out if they had any hiking boots that would suit my needs, and weren't to expensive, but were of good quality. Angel asked right away if he could help me. I told him what I was looking for,. He was very patient with me. Since the store is set up that the sales associate has to go in the back to pull the shoes/boots from inventory. I put a lot of miles on Angel today. I think I tried on every possible hiking boot that they had available. The answer was always nope this one isn't going to work for some reason or another, mostly due to comfort. I was about to walk out again defeated when he said "Why don't you try these Bearpaws they look similar to the boots you have on." I said "Sure, let's give it a whirl." He came back empty handed saying they didn't have my size in stock. He quickly added that he could see if another store, in the valley, had my size, and he could have the boots transferred to that store. He called around, the store in West Valley had my size. He said I could drive all the way across town, or I could come back when they transferred. I opted to come back. I didn't want to drive across town, in traffic, to try on a pair of boots that I wasn't sure would fit me or not. He said it would take around 10 days. Just to come across town...ummm ok. I wasn't in a rush so it was ok I would have to have to wait. Angel was so helpful in this seamless process. I was also able to find a new hiking pack similar to the one I've used for years. It was a disappointment that they didn't carry the same style, but that isn't Angels fault, and the pack was similar enough that I'm sure I will enjoy it just as much. Fast forward a few days later my boots were in to pick up. That's faster than the 10 days I was told. I told them I would be by on the weekend to pick them up, well actually to try them on to see if I liked them. The next day someone else called to tell me my boots were in, I told them I had already spoken to someone, and I would be by this weekend. So the weekend came, and again I went hiking in my old boots. I stopped by to check out these Bearpaw boots. What a difference a week makes when it comes to customer service. I had to ask for help. I asked if Angel was there, and they said he had the day off. I told them what I was there for, and the two sales associates at the counter looked at each other like "what is she talking about". Someone found the boots, and handed them to me...and I was left on my own. After trying them on, I decided to buy them, and try them out. They were similar to the ones I already own, and hoped for the best. The cashier surely wasn't friendly when she rang up my purchase, which is the case with most Big 5's. Big 5's are a lower end discounted sporting goods store with a self serve vibe. When you shop here you know what you're getting or you should. read more

I stopped by to get some shoe in-soles (desperately needed for my flat soled-boots) and to see if they had some free weights. Luckily my fiancee knows about in-soles and directed me to the pair I needed. I promptly inserted those suckers as soon as I left the store, and I am happy with the purchase so far. As far as the free weights, who knew they are so crazy expensive? I have a couple single free weights that I needed to complete my pair, but decided against it due to the price. Unfortunately, it has been a little difficult to find used weights online, probably due to everyone working out at home 'cause of COVID. I was also able to find some sweet working out fingerless, backless gloves for women (for rowing and free weights; I've been building some unwanted calluses lately) They are surprisingly flattering, and they have nice suede padding on the palms. We stopped by Big 5 today while in the area. I can't say much has changed since my last visit, five years ago... It goes without saying that they have an impressive amount of inventory packed into a pretty small store. They have fishing tackle, camping gear, air soft guns, ammo, sporting equipment of all kinds, lots of shoes, knives and all manner of sporting and outdoor gear accessories, and lots and lots more. Although they do have some items from big brands like Nike, Under Armour, and Head, a lot of what they offer are off-brands, no name brands, and basically just cheap stuff. When I buy outdoor gear I want equipment that's quality made and will last awhile. I'm not sure Big 5 offers much along those lines unfortunately... If you're looking for a bargain I expect it's possible to find some deals at Big 5, but I walked out empty handed today... read more

This Big 5 is located in the same plaza as Toys R Us and Nordstrom Rack, with a large parking lot (but can be a challenge to find parking, especially on a busy weekend). My husband and I decided to stop by this store before heading to Nordstrom Rack (one of my newest shopping obsessions now). What brought me inside was seeing a round plastic sled hanging from the store. With a large snowy hill across the street, it made me think about possibly going for a run down the hill with it. So we walked in and saw the sleds were only a mere $10 and the quality was good for the price. I did not hesitate to pick one up (The kid in me wanted it) and my husband and I made a few good runs down that hill across the street (as many people were actually). But anyways, about this location in general, it is rather on the small side. But they had a handful of other sleds to choose from (some more than $10) in the kids section. They also had some thermos on sale as well and other winter sports gear items. Service was friendly. Would recommend coming here to pick up a sled on an impromptu snow day like the day we went and make your way to the large hill across the street for a few runs. read more

It's hard to know what to say about Big 5. You kinda just have to go to one of their stores to understand and experience it. And when you've been to one of their stores, you've kinda been to all of them. This is the Sugar House location, and it's right on 13th East just south of 21st. I think they excel in inexpensive footwear, and they tend to focus a little more on clothing, but have plenty of gear. It's an odd mix--you don't find too much of the high end stuff, but there are a few brands mixed in to keep me from really calling this a bargain basement kind of sporting goods store. They also sell guns and ammo, in a tiny section of the store, so it's a little like a sports store who married a sportsman's store and they have a penchant for inexpensive stuff and like to go out on the town for a really expensive meal every so often. I'm sure that makes perfect sense. Not a bad place to stop and check when you need a sporting goods basic, but if you're after something really specific, it would be wise to give them a call or just check out a bigger store. read more

I don't really shop at Big 5 except to get reasonably priced skate shoes and the occasional pair of running shoes. The staff at this location are stand off-ish, and a few have completely avoided me when I needed help. I can imagine working a shoe department to be one of the worst jobs ever in a retail, but suck it up. Most the time I can find a suitable pair of shoes that will do the job for 20 bucks, 30 at the most. Other than that, there isn't much in my lifestyle that call for sporting goods. read more

I would like to love this place, but every time I've gone there I've come out empty-handed. Their selection in various items seems limited. I've gone looking for yoga accessories, shoes, bicycle accessories and miscellaneous other things. The last time I went I was looking for a bike helmet. They had one adult female helmet and one adult male helmet tucked away in a corner. I went to return an item that I bought a week ago. They said that they could only give me store credit because I didn't have the receipt, which is pretty standard and I was okay with. I did have all the tags and there was no damage to the item. After scanning the item they told me that they could only give me the lowest sale price in store credit which was 30 percent lower than what I paid. No wonder their parking lot is usually empty and I don't see anybody in their stores. read more

Very very bad costumer service. The workers were grumpy and depressing. I went in to go and purchase something and walked up to the door, just before i went to grab the door Handle they locked the doors in my face and told me they were closed. Very very frustrated that i drive all the way to THEM. to give them MY business and money only for them to shut me out because they closed 1 seconds before i was able to pull the door open. Nate is possibly the most helpful store employee I've ever met. I bought an old World War II era bolt action rifle and he went above and beyond to tell me about it, clean it prior to my visit (a long process for these old guns), and fix it when I applied my limited knowledge of guns to firing it. He even went as far as to give me his number in case there was any trouble and checked in to confirm that all was well with it. Outstanding employees all around. read more

This place never ceases to surprise me with their poor customer service and terrible prices. Tonight I made a trip over to the store to get an air soft gun for my two boys to help pass the time during this COVID isolation. We called to make sure that they had the air soft gun we wanted so imagine our surprise when we pull up and as we are a few feet from the glass door a guy from inside comes forward and locks the doors on us at 6:59! (Apparently with COVID the hours are now 10-7, online the hours are still listed 10-9) He saw us, made eye contact and still did it! We talk to him through the door but he refuses to open as do the other two guys standing just inside the door. Really! So strange, we just talked to them on the phone and we even said "we just talked to you". We knew exactly what we needed, they knew exactly what we needed. We are talking like a 2 min transaction but they didn't care! No kindness at all from any of these 3 guys. Very frustrating and very poor form for any business. We live minutes away but this was the last straw for me, we won't shop here anymore. We'll take our business somewhere else tomorrow and for all future purchases. read more

I went out of my way to get to this store for a specific item of foot wear that had been listed in their current newspaper ad. I did not find one pair of the advertised item. Not one. There were several large sizes specifically labeled for men but non of the 'unisex' sizes advertised. Makes you wonder if they ever had the product to begin with. If you cannot trust that they will have an advertised item then there is no reason to shop there, ever. read more

I would never shop here. It's claustrophobia and just not a nice place to go all together. I've tried to shop for shoes here before but either the staff is completely incompetent or they only have bad products. most of the time the cashier is nice enough but I have talked to the manager, Chris, before and he just doesn't care about the customer. He's rude and probably has never played a sport in his life. he doesn't run a good store at all. The other managers are helpful because they usually give a discount when asked. I've only been really helped by one employee, who actually seemed like he knew what he was talking about. But if you are looking for good quality stuff go to sports authority or dicks. only go here if you want to return it months later and get a new item. read more

What has happened to common sense and customer service...? I was in the store on 8-19-2016. Spent about $40.00. No problem. I went back three days later and gathered about $100.00 or so in merchandise and the salesgirl, Kim, refused to take my Amex, saying she needed an ID. I refused on two counts: First, it is my husbands card and has his last name and my ID has MY last name so I didn't see the point. Secondly, I had just used the SAME CARD three days earlier with no problem. I was shocked and disappointed that the asst. decided to insult me instead by saying they didn't know if the card was stolen! WHAT..? So we talked with the manager about it...TWICE! He said he would make it right... To date...9-13...we have heard nothing in the way of an apology and went to another store and bought everything I had picked out plus some...Maybe if the help took the time to get to know their customers rather than insult them their sales would increase...Still waiting JOE!
