I like recreation outlet, but this is the worst location. Everything is a bait and switch on prices and the staff have zero knowledge of their own products, even at a basic level. The Ogden and Provo locations don't have any issues, just this one. So if you can, go to one of those. read more

I'm going to give you the caveat first (and its a big one): Know before you go. Be an educated consumer. Do your homework. Caveat emptor. Here's what I mean: Recreation Outlet has some sick deals, that's undeniable. You can get a _______ for pretty cheap (fill in the blank with some piece of gear; sleeping bag, tent, nylon pants, etc) but you need to know what you're getting. They carry a few brands and lines of top-shelf stuff, but otherwise, it's some of the lesser-known brands. Again, that's not a bad thing, but you just need to know before you go. Outdoors gear typically has a law of diminishing returns, so what really is the different between a $30 sleeping pad and a $120 sleeping pad? Well, there's definitely a difference, but if you don't know what it is you're looking for in spending the extra bucks (perhaps it's to shave off a few ounces of pack weight, get a higher R-value, or just get something that's totally bomber) then why wouldn't you pick up the cheaper version. I actually got my air mattress here about a decade a go on the cheap, and it's just now starting to show signs that it needs some repair. Ya, my next purchase may very well be the pricier brand sold elsewhere, but I have zero complaints about the product I've been rocking for a decade. Those gear diminishing returns (spend $50 for something that you'd rate 2/5, $100 for a 3/5, $250 for a 4/5, $600 for a 5/5) are also the impetus in figuring out what's important to you. I'll drop (relatively) big dough on quality socks, but when it comes to pants, I'm a little more price sensitive. Gusseted crotch? Sure, I guess. As long as they fit, I don't really care to drop the extra 50 bones for a higher SPF rating on my pants. The (long and drawn out) point I'm trying to make is that Recreation Outlet is the perfect place to shop for stuff that you want to be good (I ain't hiking in jeans, yo) but you don't need to be the newest, shiniest, most recognized model. And your own tastes, needs, and budget will determine that. Now, lest you think it's a place full of low-end gear, think again. There is some super high quality stuff to be found. Alongside some of the middle-of-the-road sleeping bags, for example, are a few bags that I'd love to add to my arsenal. Since the competition and margin is competitive on that stuff, deals are a little hard to come by. I have to give a special shoutout to Rhett who, no joke, spent a long, long time talking to me about the Wind Rivers. I'm fixing to do more exploring up there, and that dude knows his Windies. He was great about sharing, giving pointers, and even though on that trip I only ended up buying a lexan fork, he was super helpful. So, that's the word. Go look at the outdoors gear. Fill in the gaps. Grab something you never knew you needed. Get an extra performance fishing shirt, with zip pits. Pick the brains of the staff. Just do your homework beforehand and you'll have the best experience possible. read more

As the other reviews have noted the Recreation Outlet is known for their big selection of cheap outdoor goods. What I will emphasis is cheap. Although you'll find some good products from time to time you'll most often find cheaply made, poor quality products that aren't worth your money even if the price is great. I'd much rather go across the street to Kirkham's and buy something that's quality made even if it is a little more expensive. With outdoor gear cheaper is never better and when you invest in good gear it will last you forever. Buy a cheap tent and you might find yourself soaking wet when the seams leak. But get yourself a good quality tent and you'll be dry for years to follow. Maybe the Recreation Outlet has more to offer to some customers than others, but for me I'm going elsewhere. read more

I love this place!! They have plenty of variety, great prices, and there's always some sort of deal going on. They care about leaving doggies in the car, and rather have you inside with your dog instead of leaving the puppy in the heat. Way nice of them! Make sure you check out their mid year sales. Those are insane. Raffles, free stuff, and almost everything 25% off. Maybe everything, can't remember. The excitement of the memories is clouding my judgment. Recreation Outlet sells overstock and one off outdoor equipment. I've bought a number of items here over the years and I've never been disappointed. It's NOT REI, but its not supposed to be. I purchased an MSR cook set for half price, about 6 years ago that is still in great shape after heavy use. Last year I took a friend from Europe to the Ski Truck. A crappy used snowboard set up from the Ski Truck was $175. On a whim, we went to Recreation Outlet, and my friend got a board, boots, and bindings for $150. It wasn't the newest, or best equipment, but it was WAY better than the Ski Truck and even cheaper than renting. read more

I am not an outdoor enthusiast the only I knew coming in here was I wanted to look at hiking backpacks. We were greated immediately by a young man, told him what I was looking for he admittedly let me know backpacks were not his speciality (I love when people are honest) he went and got a young women who could help us. She was so patient and helpful, letting me try on a few packs adjusting them for my short torso. There is no pressure on sales here which I love. They have a small variety of a lot of outdoor stuff, prices didnt really seem lower here then any other store. read more

This place is great for your outdoor needs. It has stuff for backpacking, climbing, hiking, etc. What is great about this place is that you can get things at low prices if you look hard enough. I came in for a compression sack and walked out with a compression sack, a dry bag, and some other little things that were priced low so I had to buy. We typically swing by recreation outlet first to see if we can find a bargain before trying the big name companies. We love searching through this place for deals. Definitely should come by here first for your outdoor needs. read more

Anytime I consider buying anything for outdoor adventures, I check this place out first. I'm not an avid outdoors person but every time I have come here, there are always knowledgeable staff to help me out. They don't BS with you or try to upsell you or try to get you to buy more than you need (in my experience). Every purchase I've made here has held up really well and just used them for snowshoe rental (better snowshoes and cheaper rental rates than some of the bigger stores...). Stopped by after years. Just bought a few items, after moving back from Cedar City asked about the guy who used to run the SLC store years ago. I talked to the guy who helped me, who was helpful explaining my primus alchohol stove. The minimum girl at the register is lost. They both didn't recall the guy years ago set me up with 3 back packs, 3 compressive sleeping bags, a very lightweight pack tent and lightweight accesories. The nice guy helped me with my knew camp stove, but didn't have a clue who used to help me back in 2011? That guy was the shit, he put put us onto so many great trails, his advice was incredible. My only complaint when just stopping by after years was after talking about shopping there years ago and spending way over a grand, trying to remember the guys name and saying, he was so cool, always good advice and a discount for repeat high paying customers. The guy helping me shot back, we don't do anymore! No discounts! I replied dude I need just some butane and a utility bag. I miss that other guy, I think he had long dark hair and maybe a beard? Just bought out first Airstream in January from Outlet Recreation (Ken was our salesperson) and we had a great experience. I received excellent communication from Ken, and he set up delivery/meeting for us in Indiana (half way home) where we picked it up, and with all the necessary paperwork in hand we headed home. And yesterday I received the replacement lens covers for the ceiling lights that were either missing or cracked. And don't forget the starter package that was left for us to begin our adventures in Airstream camping. I would definitely do business with Outlet Recreation again and hope to make North Dakata a stopping place while traveling in that area. Incredible service! I bought a Gregory backpack there a few months back on sale because it was last years model. When I took it up to the cash register, it was the floor model, so the gentleman who helped me went in the back and got a different one, so they could keep the floor model. I went backpacking and felt immediate pain and discomfort and the bag felt like it didn't fit. I realized that the bag that I had gotten was the incorrect size when the associate went to the back to exchange it. I took it in months after I had purchased it, explained the situation, and they did not have the same bag from last years model in stock anymore. So they exchanged it for a completely new 2013 model of the exact same backpack! Incredible service, and they took a big profit hit by making sure that I was taken care of! Go here for the service and expertise. They do have name brand quality products despite what other reviews have stated at lower prices. Then they also have lower quality products for those not wishing to spend a lot of money. I say whatever gets more people enjoying the outdoors the better. This store is a disaster. I made my final trip there yesterday thinking as I walked in that I always leave disappointed, this visit was no different. There is zero customer service, I have never been approached by anyone, the displays ? are a mess with no order whatsoever Men's and Women's clothes mixed in together, sizes mixed up and just general chaos. I have been in at various times on on a very rare occasion you can find something of quality if you look long and hard. I have been retail as a business owner and now as a manufactures sales rep. for over 25 years, this store needs some major T.L.C. close the place for a week and clean and reorganize and train the staff to at least say hello. I won't waste my time here anymore I'll go to Kirkhams or R.E.I. and shop a clean organized store, with staff that communicate with the customers. Bill in S.L.C. read more

I love this store! They have a very friendly and more knowledgeable staff than I have found at a lot of gear shops, and a HUGE assortment of products. I have always had a good experience shopping there and I have been doing so for more than a decade. The whole concept of their business is to have options for every customer, every experience level and every price range. They DO sell some cheap gear that is really made to get you through just a season or two, for casual, twice-a-year campers, but they also carry many of the biggest and most well-reputed brand names in the outdoor gear industry, as well as many well-built mid-range options that will work fine for most people's use. Although I really like Kirkham's too, I usually shop at Rec Outlet, because I can usually get something just as good, from a well-known name-brand and usually at a discount. I also don't think any gear shops in Utah can touch them for customer service, their employees are always there to help you and love to chat about trips to take, places to see and things to do. I appreciate that their staff actually seems to get outdoors a lot and can give firsthand feedback on their products. One of the best things about this shop is that they also buy lots of closeouts and overstock, so they always have some really cool stuff at online/outlet prices. While I agree that for most outdoor gear, cheap isn't usually the best way to go, I have always been able to find good-quality options from leading brand names there as well as cheap options for more casual campers or for less-essential pieces of gear. Plus, they keep me coming back to see what new treasures they have that week at crazy discounts. I would advise though, if you're in there and you see something you like, get it, they may not have it the next time you go in! There are some drawbacks, they have so much stuff that the store isn't very neat or organized well, they don't always have my size or color choice, but when I need something I always check there first, and they've saved me thousands of dollars over the years.
