This is the saddest REI on the planet. The store has been gutted of its floor inventory leaving a poor selection of items for sale. We asked a salesperson if they were going out of business because the store now resembles a Kmart on its last legs (she said no). My wife tried to buy some hiking shoes while we were there - eventually the salesperson (who tried to give good service) said "I can't help you anymore." We left empty handed and went to Scheels where the variety, service and prices were excellent (we immediately got what we needed). REI has become a victim of bean-counting business wonks who don't care about the outdoor community. Two can play this game: Cancel my loyalty points: I'll look my outdoor gear elsewhere. read more

REI Salt Lake City outfits you for everything you need to hit the slopes. The Sandy store employees were helpful too--they just didn't carry any stock for purchase. The SLC shop is full service. It carries snowshoes, touring and downhill skis, boards etc and has an assortment of boots for free ride too! The boot fitter matched us with some sic Phaenoms that were perfect for our skiing style. Came in looking a new ski setup this winter on a limited budget. I also don't know much about skis or boots either. But the associate, Rachael, was so helpful! She sized my boot perfectly and patiently answered all of my questions about skis. She offered valuable insight and clearly knows her stuff! I found the perfect boots within my budget and skis for a reasonable price. She also helped me get my skis mounted! Literally made this experience so easy and helpful. Really disappointed in the rude customer service from an employee working in the bike area. I asked for what I thought was a common part (a barb and olive for hydraulic brakes) considering they offer brake pads and even the bleed kit for hydraulic brakes. I was first greeted with "well did you even check over by the rest of the brake stuff?" And then the employee reluctantly went over and looked for himself telling me how a guy previously came in looking for a Fox 36 part which they didn't have and we shouldn't expect REI to have parts like that. When he didn't see it back there he asked someone else, then proceeded to tell me "I told you we weren't going to have it". I did not catch his name, but I guess it is my bad for thinking a place that sells bikes, works on bikes, and has other bike parts would sell a common part like that. read more

I'm a long time REI member and I was surprised to find that REI Millcreek doesn't allow dogs in the store. Rather they provide a place to "tie" your dog to a metal ring in the concrete outside the store while you're shopping - note only one ring provided. While I was there Sunday July 28th there up to three dogs tied outside the store, waiting for owners to return. It was 90 degrees in Millcreek area of Salt Lake on Sunday. To be fair REI did provide a "pop -up" cover for the dogs but no water - a store employee told us that was his job but he must have forgotten that day. So speak up REI Co-Op Members are we OK we having dogs tied outside REI stores? read more

Very shady and sounds like financial problems. I placed a nearly $500 order on June 7 with delivery within 2-3 days. When no delivery was made, I reached out to REI on June 17 and got a reply on June 18 that the order could not be filled but that REI would refund my credit card by July 3 and send me a paper check for points on July 9. There is no reason in 2025 for refunds to take 2-3 weeks, and for any part to be sent by paper check. REI is taking an interest free loan with my money for 1 month. Are they slowing down refund payments to make it look like they have more cash in the bank than they otherwise would? It is exactly what other bankrupt retailers have done in recent years. "Holy moly what is going on" we said as we turned into the parking lot of REI. Masses of people were hovered around the door. Come to find out it's their annual garage sale. They were only letting a few people in at a time, but I was able to go into the main part of the store without any issues. I only came to get bug spray. Sure I can just grab a small travel size, and be on my way, ya right! If you have ever been to this location you know that their customer service is clear in the very back corner of the store. I mean clear in the back corner. This is where the end of the check out line was today. I needed the bug spray so I got in line, miles of people were ahead of me and people kept lining up in back of me. You know how slow check out lines can be, well I waited a few minutes and started up a conversation with a lady behind me who said this is crazy I have a plane to catch. I thought you know, I"ll just have to put on my boxing gloves, and go toe to toe with the mosquitoes, I'm not waiting here for $6. Time is money. We decided to leave the mad crowd. I had the worst experience of my life ever at REI of all places ... I came into look at tents and sleeping bags so I know what I want to buy when I get paid, but I had to pee so I was kinda all over the store looking for the rest room but I did and was in there for a minute (I s issues and medication backs me up sometimes) went back and started looking and looking a blanket and doing math for measurements ( I am not the greats at math) I then started talking to a salesman associate or what ever there called there about my friends music and then about being homeless aswell I am thinking to myself this guy is cool and we talk for a minute then a manger looking guy pulled him aside for a moment and I went and looked at the knifes and he came back. I kinda felt like something was happening but blew it off and I turned around to exit and there were to police officers there and they asked me to take everything out of my pockets because I was accused of stealing from them .. I went into shoke and my disability came out and I started stuttering and thought great I am going to jail and I didn't steal anything. I was honest with police have outstanding warrants and I said great I get to go to jail and not even charged with anything.. they said if I didn't have anything of the store and no felony warrants I would be going.. sorry to these officers but I have been lied to 2 times in the last year with cops saying the same thing.. well they didn't find anything they asked me to grab my stuff and leave I was moving fast enough I guess so I just grabbed everything and walked out and other customers were looking and mumbling to each other.... So REI you lost a sales and a membership for this. As well you will have a anger management flying sign just of property thanks for our freedom of speech law... So if u support this behavior then God forbid you are fake and heartless... Don't call cops unless someone is in danger or medical attention is needed... Came here searching for The Landmark Project XS tees and this store delivered! When I visit National Parks, I always love the camping, hiking, beauty, and serenity, but am usually a little sad that they lack tees in XS to commemorate our adventures. Enter The Landmark Project and its rad National Park tee series and I'm one happy camper! Each local REI only has the tees for the local area so on our road trip I've been collecting the tees for the parks I've visited and am stoked to be able to wear them as a way of showing love for our parks! The #1 feature of this huge store for me is the customer service. I have never walked into the store and not been greeted, and then approached by a team member asking what I need and how they can help. I have purchased a number of items over the years, and have come to really enjoy that you can depend on the brands they carry. This store is NOT a discount store, but is high-end climbing, mountaineering, camping, and outdoor clothing. You can find the coolest little gadgets that make camping so much more enjoyable. I have a backpack from them that I have used for years, and still get asked if I just purchased it. I wish there were something that I could compare REI to in the Salt Lake area, but there simply is not. They have set themselves apart and really the only downside that I can see, is that their stuff last SO LONG that the must count on repeat purchases to upgrade all of a persons outdoor gear. read more

It just doesn't get better than this. REI has everything an outdoor lover can dream of, but the best part is that the staff is insanely knowledgeable. I was purchasing a Yeti cooler and one of the employees asked me what I'd be using it for... after chatting, he recommended I go up one size bigger, and I am so glad he did. The other one would've ended being too small. They'll leave you alone to browse, or they will walk you through everything you need to grab for your upcoming adventure. I never feel pressured here. It's my favorite. Sometimes I like to look at things that I don't intend buying for awhile. I have a long list of 'wants' to add to my gear collection and the employees here get that. Plus, the REI Satisfaction Guarantee is incredible. If for any reason you don't like the product within the first year, they will take it back no questions asked. I haven't had to use it because I always love what I end up purchasing, but that definitely gives some peace of mind. If you come here often you should definitely become a REI Member. It's a one time $20 lifetime membership. Plus they have special promotions sometimes where if you become a member, they'll give you a $20 gift card for your next purchase... so your membership is basically free. The membership gets you an annual reward based on how much you spend, coupons every so often, access to events, discounts on events, and all kind of things that make $20 SO WORTH IT. read more

Fantastic place to buy outdoor gear if you are independently wealthy or if your mortgage company is willing to let you skip a few payments. My friend (a Rockefeller) sent me here to look at ski equipment. $350 - $499 for ski pants, one of them was on sale for $280. What a phenomenal bargain! Only $800 for skis and $500 for boots!? Sign me up! If anything this store will inspire you to make better choices in life so that you might be able to enjoy the finer things. Alas I was not able to stomach all the value here so I had to head down the street to second tracks where the commoners shop. read more

I giggle like a schoolgirl in this place. Tents, stoves, backpacks, books, technical wear, water filters, pads, daypacks, nalgenes. You might as well just scream, "Candy! Candy! Candy!" Honestly, I could spend hours here just shopping, grabbing, stretching and comparing all the gear. And I say "could" as if it was a hypothetical. Let's be real. I *have* spent hours here pawing, caressing, and fondling the gear. It's a giant showrooom of my gift wish list and for a gearhead it's heaven. Starting with my favorites--the camping and backpacking, you get most of your higher-end-ish stuff (there are still some more affordable makes and models) but not the really wonky technical stuff. The really specialty, fanatic stuff is still being pioneered by the cottage industry guys in their garages and small workshops. Fair enough. You can't stock a whole store with the weirdo stuff, and for most the Mountain Hardwear and North Face and Marmot stuff is hardcore enough. Try on the backpack you've had your eye on, climb in a tent you've been stalking, squish the mat you've heard about and toss the sleeping bag around you've been considering. It's like a giant playground. There's probably bike stuff here as well. Well, of course there is. I just mean that I've never really gone into that section so I can't really speak about what's in there. There's a small assortment of gear for technical climbing as well that falls into the "outside of my expertise" category. One of the things I really like about this location is the Wasatch Room where they hold classes and lectures. It's a nice space that's really a bonus of this location. It's large, well appointed, and comfortable. The bring in some really interesting people from local authors to world-famous nature photographers. Check the schedule and pop in for a class. This location also houses the Public Lands Information Center which is supposed to have information about recreation and rules and permits on our public lands. To be perfectly honest, I've picked up some literature from here that was useful on my own, but I've never been impressed with the staff there. Note that it's not run by REI so my rating doesn't reflect the PLIC, but I think it's still relevant. I mean, they've got the space, they're paying someone to sit there. Why couldn't it be someone useful. Note also that it's been a long while since I tried to engage the person there, so hopefully someone new is working there and has a little more pizazz, interest, and knowledge. If not, it's a great starting off point but you'll need a lot of self-motivation to really get the answers you're looking for. May be better off jumping to the book section of the store for the info you seek. The only thing holding me back from a full-on love fest of gear geekdom is the pricing. These days, I buy almost every piece of gear online. It's just too easy to find a better deal. REI is like a showroom for the internet, and once you've selected your item if you can exercise patience and go home to shop the prices you're going to save some dough. However, when you need a lexan foon and you're on your way to the trailhead, this is your number one stop for specialized gear. read more

I can honestly say I'd never set foot in REI until a couple of weeks ago. I had been to REI a few times, but it was just to stand in the parking lot and wait for my Chow Truck order to get finished cooking :) Historically I have not been much of an outdoorsy person, despite living in Alaska for a large portion of my life, but recently I've taken up hiking and officially have the bug. I decided I needed some trekking poles, so I ventured into REI to take a looksy. I was overwhelmed with the amount of items I "need" after browsing around this store. So many cool gadgets. And what's with the climbing wall? I saw that and automatically wanted to go play on it, but stayed away. It was my first time, after all. I found the poles I was looking for in no time. I have been shopping at REI for many years and was happy to see an REI location here in Salt Lake City filled with so many wonderful winter items while I was on vacation late December. With Salt Lake City snowing so much during our vacation (and with such cold temperatures... please note that I was born and raised in So. Cal where it is MUCH warmer), it is no surprise that this location had a great selection (and plenty of items) of warm winter gear (perfect for skiing and boarding too). Much more than the REI location I frequent back at home. But anyways, when I entered this store, a few employees had greeted me and asked if I was looking for anything in particular. It was nice to see that employees were available on the sales floor to help customers in case they need it. On this visit, most winter clothing was 20-30% off, which I ended up purchasing a few items (since Salt Lake City ended up being much colder than I was expecting.. in the single digits!). The woman's restroom was clean upon this visit. Would come back here again if I was in the area. read more

It was more for aesthetic, as the ski did not have problem for functioning. They didn't even fully cover the chip and the color match is pretty funny. REI means high quality with a very good selection for all things outdoors. The staff are highly knowledgeable in myriad outdoorsy areas, and tend to be dedicated enthusiasts themselves so are happy to share stories and advice. They have a lot of nice extra services here too from equipment rental and repair, to a public lands & education kiosk that will help you understand rules and practices around local watersheds. As a recent transplant, this is vital since I had always taken abundant, clean water for granted. The store is massive, which allows for big displays like an area with tents set up, and you can always powerwalk around the store trying on a new backpack or shoes. Finally, members get good discounts through periodic coupons, and with an REI Card you earn dividends that can be substantial if you're a frequent shopper. They also have big "as is" sales maybe twice a year where you can get steals on awesome stuff. The only problem here is there are no returns on this "as is "stuff. Period. So, if your sleeping pad springs a leak the first night you're out of luck. REI is very expensive, without a doubt. I have to knock them one star because their feel good, everyone can enjoy nature philosophy runs smack into a super high prices on most every outdoor "essential" they carry. Even the REI brand is highly costly, making the dream of the great outdoors just that for most people if you buy into the idea that you need lots of stuff before hitting the trail. The store is often super busy, and customer service can be hit or miss. You'll be swarmed one visit, and not find anybody to help you the next. We also got a rather nasty scolding from a manager once because we asked if they'd take a return on "as-is" sleeping pads. We told them they allowed this at our old MN store, but the manager said "Um. No. Never. No returns. We don't do that." in a nasty snippy tone. Ok teacher, we won't he naughty again. We just walked into REI to look at foldable chairs to use at outdoor concert venues. The salesman we asked to help us was beyond condescending. Both my wife and I were utterly offended. Initially, my wife went up to him, (around 5'10: salty gray hair with a beard, and I believe an earring; Not my wife, the salesman) and asked if he was free. He was helping out another couple with a kid. The salesman said he was available to help us. He mentioned that all the chairs were out, unless kids mess with them, and they get moved. Now I grew up in NYC and enjoy joking (called kibbitzing within my tribe) I asked him if the chair I liked would fit the rules at outdoor concert venues. He just said no. I asked joking, "even if I'm short. Don't they have a line like at an amusement park. If you're height is below this line, the chair rules don't apply to you." The salesman didn't smile. He didn't laugh. He just stared at me. I wasn't about to give up. "The smaller chairs are impossible for me to get up with their tiny legs. I'm liable to roll into someone's lap trying to stand up." Our salesman said nothing. Again, he just stared at me. It was so damn uncomfortable. It was utterly dismissive. His behavior reminded me of my teens when I was awkwardly trying to be cool with a girl, and she wanted no part of me. However, I was just trying to buy a folding chair. I didn't want to pick this guy up. This happens in Utah. There seems to be a whole lot of people who feel it's perfectly okay to be dismissive when someone is attempting to joke or be friendly. It would never happen in New York or Wisconsin. It would be considered impolite and a person, especially a salesperson, would at least smile. This is one of the reasons I will always feel like an alien in Utah. I just don't understand some of the overt behavior. It seems to have no place in humanity. read more

I bought a bike for my son spent over $300 and first ride out the chain fell off and wouldn't stay on, I called them first since they were only doing curbside due to covid they said to bring it in. When I got there the lady who seemed to know nothing and was super rude said they weren't doing things like this, and we'd have to come back. I got fitted for both snowboard boots and ski boots this year and a few ski days later found out that both were not only one size too big, but also too wide. I am a beginner so I was looking for guidance on finding a good fit, but they seemed to just sell me whatever so I would buy it so they could get me out of the store with a sale. When I not only had to return the boots but also get my ski's remounted, they gave me the impression that they would do it for free since they had sold me the wrong size boot in the first place. I came back to the store to pick them up and not only did they make me pay in full for it, but they made it seem like it was my fault that I had gotten the wrong size boot. The manager was very rude and unprofessional and I will not be coming back or recommending to friends or family. read more

Great place! Have not been to the rental department since I was a kid so I can't weigh in there. However, when I was there the staff was very friendly and knowledgable. They've got what you need for hiking, biking, skiing/boarding, camping, fishing, etc... I would definitely recommend coming here for your outdoor activity needs! This review is for the ski boot fitting I had with Lincoln. I came in from out of town this last weekend and because it's late in the season I had ordered 3 pair of boots from REI to try in the store. With their help I had made good choices of what to have ready in store for me. While I wasn't able to make an appointment Everest helped out with narrowing down the boots to 1 pair. Then Lincoln stepped in and offered to do a full fitting. Amazing. I bought the Salomon Smax. He was able to put the boots in the oven to heat them up, not just heating the liners but the shell itself since these are the custom Salomon shell. Lincoln spent over an hour with me getting the boots just right, taping bulk to one spot to get rid of a hotspot and adjusting the buckles. He also helped me get fit into a pair of superfeet insoles to keep my low volume feet from rolling side to side in the boot. I must say I now feel like a totally different skier. I'm in the breakin period still but the boots are already crazy comfy and I'm without pain, but feel practically glued to my skis. Bravo to Lincoln!! read more

I always thought at one time they had a huge, gigantic rock wall there. I distinctly remember seeing it several times, but it wasn't there on a recent trip, kinda disappointing, since that was mostly the sole reason we went. REI has always been kind of a mixed bag for me. Most of the areas this store caters to are of little to no interest to me and prior visits were with friends. Still, I liked the idea of them having different foodstuffs that were different than anywhere else I could find them, which is no longer the case. I did enjoy their campfire/tent set-up thing, but not enough to spend time in a store that seems both incredibly vast and boring. I also found their checkout lanes to be mostly chaos, which I utterly deplore. This is a definite change for the worse... read more
