I called them ahead of time asking if they had any field hockey sticks. They said yes! When I got there an associate walked me over to the lacrosse sticks. He didn't know the difference between a lacrosse stick and a field hockey stick. Very frustrating that I completely wasted my time and gas!!!!! read more

I came in to buy my partner a pair of shorts for the holidays. I was looking for a pair of white shorts, but the only pair they had in his size were scuffed up and stained, so I asked if they had any more in the back and they said no... "Well, these are stained," I said, to which, I'm assuming the manager responded with, "A stain stick will take that right out." I was honestly kind of stunned. I wasn't looking for a discount or anything, but I was hoping for maybe a "We can order those for you online," or "There's a similar pair over here," honestly anything but tips on how to get a stain out of clothing I'm purchasing brand new. So, in the words of Randy Jackson, 'it's gonna be a no for my dawg.' I went home and bought them off Amazon instead. read more

I haven't run into a lazier, less helpful crew of staff, ever. Thumbs way, WAY down for the customer service here. I arrived at the store looking for a pair of sneakers. I found some on the back wall and asked one of the salesman for 2 pairs in my size. He ignored me. And then sighed. So much so that his colleague offered to get my sneakers for him. He brought two pairs from the back, only one was correct, and I never heard from him again, example, how do those fit? do you need any further help? NOPE, not at this store. I then brought them up to front counter so I could purchase them. The ones I chose were on sale. I thought, for a lesser amount than they were. Instead of politely correcting me, informing me, helping me, the cashier, sighed and moaned and then called for back up for a price check. I ended up going back to check myself and the person that she called hadn't even moved or started towards the front. I got back and said I read the sales tag and the cashier gave me and the other salesperson at the desk who was trying to help me figure out the price MAJOR attitude. Ya know, because I was REALLY bothering her with my silly questions about the price. The more attitude she gave me with her eyes and little nods of her head, the worse I felt and finally just as I was stepping forward to pay, I found I absolutely could not. So I didn't. I told her, I changed my mind and wouldn't buy the sneakers because they needed to seriously improve their customer service. Someone get this girl a new life, a raise or something, because this job ain't working for her! (Or really, any of the sales people, save 2-- the man in the red shirt and tie and the guy who was helping me in the front. The 2 in the back and the girl in the front, no thank you.) read more

They are a dying breed.. The sports store. I guess I mostly purchase stuff online but every now and then I like to "browse". They usually have pretty good deals on sneakers. And to be honest you can buy anything from candy to a tent. Pretty convenient and they have a bunch of locations left standing. This was the studio location. After leaving we witnessed a fight between a vagrant and a customer. Manager seemed to handle it well.. Parking is easy also. read more

Last night, I called three different stores to find a specific style of baseball glove. A woman answered, I gave her the SKU number, style, size 12.5", and specified it was for a left hand, right hand thrower. She asked me to repeat it three times and put me on hold for five minutes and claimed she had it. I gave her my name to put it on hold for today. I had to stop her before she hung up and ask when I should pick it up. She said whenever. Everything is fine until I get there today. I drove 30 miles to find out, the woman not only did not put my glove on hold, they did not even have the same size for the left hand. I talked to four different employees, each of which were convinced that it was on the shelf. One employee tried to give me a completely different glove. I was extremely annoyed. But what I can't get over are the following: 1. They did not put a customer's item on hold (what's the point of calling? and why did she ask for my name if they didn't have it?) 2. They do not know the difference between a left and right glove (I specified left hand for right hand thrower) 3. They do not know the difference between sizes. (I asked for 12.5" and they gave me a 11.5". An inch is a huge difference. Also, it's labeled with the size on inside of the glove) When I proceeded to explain this to an employee he asked, "was it a girl? she only does clothes". WOW, at a sports store I figured knowing the concept of left from right and what inches stands for was common knowledge. The employee wrote down the SKU, size, and left hand glove on a piece of paper for me. As if I didn't already have that information, he ended it with "just in case you forget". Incompetent staff, knows nothing about sport equipment, and definitely don't care about customer service. (I called the El Monte Store and spoke to two employees who helped get my problem solved.) read more

Good people work here. They are nice and have a good sense of humor. When you're cousin is a comedian and carries his act in every store he walks into, humor matters. They have a small lot right next to the store which helps a lot because Ventura Blvd is parking hell. Big 5 has great pricing on everything to start with but it's the sales that really hook me in. I always wait for the mailer and then go in to pick up a new pair of shoes or something else that I probably don't need but is priced low. read more

This big 5 was a decent size, the workers are friendly, but didn't r3aly approach me unroll later, but they were helpful when they approached me. But I do want you to keep in mind that it was late when I went in, and they were probably busy getting ready to close. They also didn't mind m3 having a puppy with me, they didn't complain once about it, they in fact welcomed us in when we entered. They were all realy nice and friendly. I would defiantly be back there again. Also their prices were great and had realy nice things compared to the other big 5 locations that I have gone to. read more

I have been coming to this big 5 for about 8 months now and all the time I come get some fishing gear they don't have anything , Everything is always so messy and out of order missing parts I wish they could restock at least once a month on all the fishing gear all the time I keep going back and saying to myself ok this time they will have this they will have that but nope it's all the same... You guys really need to setup up that fishing gear I go to Walmart and they have everything you need but I don't like the wait in the long lines thats why I give you guys a chance but you guys always let me down read more

Maybe it's me ... yet anytime I walk into Big 5 Sporting Goods, it's like Christmas morning! I love it! The Studio City location is not the biggest but they have an amazing selection of all things Sports & Fitness under one roof. I also find, because the store is not massive, the customer service "can be" better and nothing seems overwhelming. Big 5 is moderately prices, as far as sporting goods stores go ... and if you sign up for their email list, you'll receive sales ads & mobile coupons. I came here Sunday evening and it wasn't busy, so that's a plus! I needed some comfortable cross-training shoes. There's a big variety and the guys were very helpful. I tried on about 6 pairs and finally settled on New Balance. They were comfortable and on sale for $40 - SCORE! What made my visit particularly great was the staff - I remember Chris and Oscar knew their product offering and inventory. They are very chill, so because they might not be excited - don't let that fool you. They know their shoes and trust their recommendations. At first, I thought because Chris was kinda cold he didn't know what he was talking about. But then as I asked more questions, he told me about the differences and shoe types and why the NB shoes were more comfy. Anyway, just something to be mindful about. Went in to make a large purchase we waisted about 5-10 minutes at the counter waiting for assistance. There were 3 customers waiting for assistance and we can hear VERY clearly the manager writing up and disciplining an employee with the office door open and asked us to wait. I have never witnessed this anywhere where the manager decides to take disciplinary action over client servicing. When he finished he came out with a neck mask which isn't complaint with CDC covid standards he had the worst attitude and didn't apologize for the wait needless to say we took our money elsewhere read more

I called and asked for a specific size swim suit and the girl who answered was rude. I advised her the size I was looking for only came in young adult girl. A guy came on and stated they had the suit in he size requested. I confirmed it was a swim suit and he said yes. We drove and when we went to pick it up they were handing me spandex boys shorts. There was 1 cashier in the whole store, who just stood there with a blank look on his face. We were planning on buying some shoes, but we walked out. This is a pretty decent Big 5. Keyword "Big 5" - this is not an REI, Cabela's or even a Sports Authority but I pop in here from time to time when I'm looking for something (patella band, jump rope, baseball stuff for the kid, clearance ski items, goggles, swim stuff, random shit I may not really need, etc) and they usually seem to have it and a decent price on it. I swung by this evening to purchase a Daily Adventure Pass for an upcoming hike, one of the closest places to the house to get one of these and I found a pair of hiking boots for $19.99. C'mon, you can't beat 20 bucks for a pair of hiking boots, I'm sure they aren't the greatest things ever but hell I'm a runner not a real serious hiker so I'm sure these bad boys will suffice on my weekly few hour hikes. If you are in the area I'd recommend checking this store out - there's also a new Sports Authority in Sherman Oaks - I find both to have pretty comparable prices, sometimes I can't stand ordering on-line and having to wait - I'm to impatient for that. Give this little old store a chance, they may have what you need. read more

My husband and I are into outdoors and frequent big 5, we went in today with intentions of buying a shot gun. The salesmen advised it would be over an hour until he could help us and was extremely rude. I have my card already and didn't even need the test. We have bought guns before and know the process. There was another gentleman taking his test and he wouldn't even start helping us until he finished his entire transaction. Why not start helping us and then stop when he's done? You could tell he just didn't want to deal with the paperwork seems like he needs to find a new job. Also to add to this I went into the store two previous times 1 I was told by the manager nobody who knew about the firearms was available and nobody certified to sell one, so why do you even have them for sale? 2 I walked In and waited 15 minutes several associates walked by and didn't even ask if I needed help so I walked out of the store. This store needs to get friendlier associates maybe if they made commission they wouldn't turn customers away! Will not return to this store for any other purchases either. read more

Wasn't treated very well by the manager Justin just now when I went in to make an exchange for a more expensive item. I didn't have a receipt but item was in original packaging and I was able to show a e-receipt from my bank. Justin replied "there's a lot of things in my store that cost that amount to you could've bought anything" essentially calling me a liar. I won't shop here again. There is a polite way to say "I'm sorry I can't do that" and there is a rude way. Justin chose to act like he didn't care how I felt about the store at all. read more

This store has a wide selection of items but absolutely terrible customer service!! Upon arrival I could not get an answer out of an associate as to where the bike accessories were. The response I continually kept receiving was "Hold on one moment, someone will be right with you." This statement held untrue as there were barely any associates found throughout the store. The associates that I did find were standing around having friendly conversations with one another but in no way seemed engaged or willing to help the customers. When I finally received customer service for another item I was looking for (mens shoe department) I politely asked if a certain type of shoe was slip resistant. The associate took on my request but seemed lost and confused. When he finally returned, he proceeded to tell me that the shoe I was inquiring about was in fact not slip resistant. His promptness and attitude did not bother me, but what did was that he was referring to a completely different shoe, it wasn't even the shoe that I asked about! This completely made me feel ignored and as if I wasn't a value to his time. Personally, I believe that the associates here need to take a little bit more time to be invested in their customers, rather than their personal lives and the friendships that they hold at work. read more

Just bought a Training Mask to help with my lungs. I hope to adapt my lungs to these California mountains. Ever since I moved here I've been have more issues with my breathing. I'm happy I visited Big 5 off of Ventura. They were very helpful, kind, & speedy. I'll be back soon, maybe tomorrow to buy a Caddis float tube for my great fishing adventures around California. I must use the great deal they have running at the moment for 20% off. The Caddis has everything I need in a float tube & Big 5 has it for the low. The only thing I wish is that they carried a better selection of sweat suits for working out. I could only find Russell brand & I'm not too fond of them. I fee Nike has a better feel. The employees here at 8-9pm are HORRIBLE and the so called manager just tops it off. Both the manager and employee do not want to work and literally look like they would be anywhere else but there. I'm not a big fan of Big 5 stores but they were having a huge sale so I went to get what I needed. They were nice but the cashier was a little unexperienced. Luckily the manager was right behind her and was able to help me get what I needed and be on my way. If you have to use the bathroom you have to go through their employee area passed a lot of merchandise and into a one stall bathroom that has no toilet paper, no seat covers and barely enough paper towels to dry your hands. Good selection of products. However this store fails miserably with the leadership provided by Vordan. He refused to assist a customer in front of me who was asking a very legitimate question regarding the first time 10% discount in a very calm and nice way. Since Vordan didn't know the answer he simply told the customer that he didn't like the way she asked the question and wasn't prepared to help. Typical me. Go on vacation and bring nothing but high heels. So,I needed a pair of tennis shoes,quick. Something plain,lightweight, I told the salesguy,and cheap because I can't fit them in my luggage and will need to dispose of them in a week. He picked up a box of shoes and handed them to me. Plain,white,$ 19.99,and they were my size ! Amazing. Quickest shoe purchase I ever made.
