Came for a tennis racket, and got exactly what I needed! I wanted something sturdy, but still good for a beginner! Then I saw a few of my favorite tennis players partnered with some of the brands, and had to opt for the HEAD racket that featured my girl Coco Gauff!!! It's even in my favorite color, purple! I am one happy camper! The price was also great, so I'm satisfied with the value I received! The store has a LOT going on, and it can be confusing, but luckily the worker was friendly and helpful with locating which section had the tennis items! It also felt very clean, despite there being so much inventory out on the floor! It truly has everything an athlete should need! I have young kids and I get their gear here. Sometimes better prices than online. And it's good to be able to try on the shoes and pants instantly. The store is organized and has lots of brands. Prices are fair. Best part is the clearance section. Service is good. Check out lines are pretty quick too. Only odd thing is parking. The parking lot isn't well painted and the cars drive by pretty fast because it seemed to be used as a short cut to drive through. read more

I've been coming here for all my little league needs. I live about four minutes away. I've never had a problem here. Until today, I was in the Little League baseball section because I had to grab my son a pair of pants and I asked for help, and an associate literally stopped and looked at me and kept walking away. I assumed positive intent. I told myself that this guy was on his way to put something down or let someone know something and then he'll come back to me. He never came back. I saw that he continued to do something else. Then my inner voice told me to speak up and say something about it because I honestly never do. I walked up to the register and I told the guy how I felt. I told him I said hey I called for you and you looked right at me, but you just kept walking when I needed your help. He just looked at me and then turned around and continue to do what he was doing. I looked around and I saw manager looking right at me and I saw another associate looking right at me and I asked both of them if this was how you treat customers here and they just looked at me and then they looked away and continue doing what they were doing. This was unreal lol. This is something you seen in a movie. Everyone here was extremely rude. I will go out not my way to find another location. Terrible service. Manger should be fired. The people that work here are SO rude. Especially the girl at the register. When I checked out she didn't say one word to me. I originally went in for a tennis racket, and couldn't even access that section. There were a hundred boxes and ladders stacked in the way. I saw 3 employees there and not one offered to help at all. I always go to this location and the main reason is Drue the store manager. He is always helpful and goes out of his way to provide excellent customer service. He helped me out of a jam recently and even though he was very busy he took the time needed to help me when he could have either made me wait or had someone else help. Ive never experienced such horrible customer service in my life. I walked in to purchase a knife, the manager named kimberly asked to see my i.d. Which i understand its her job, im im retail as well. I didnt say a word, i handed her my i.d then i waited for her to give it. She spins around and asks me "is there a problem?" Then closes the showcase. I said "exscuse me? " She said " you gave me a look, is there a problem" I said "if there was a problem you would know" She opened the show case then she continued " do you have a problem with me asking you for your i.d" I said "i gave you my i.d didnt i?" "But you gave me a look, is there a problem?" I said "i didnt give you a look, even if i did i can look at who i want how i want" Then she closed the showcase and refused to help me. There are a lot of Big 5 sporting good stores around the Los Angeles area. This is the closest location to me, so it is the one I most commonly go to. Overall, though this shop is somewhat smaller than some other Big 5 locations, it is generally very well stocked and you can find the type of items that Big 5 has to offer. Regarding its size, as stated, this is not a large location, which means that they have small isles. So, you can feel a bit crowded in this store. This being said, their items are well organized and easy to find and the store is always very well-maintained so even though it may be a bit claustrophobic in some of their Isles, they still have all the things you can expect from Bug 5. This Big 5 has a very large selection of shoes. They have the various types of sporting shoes plus they always have a very good selection of weekly specials. So, if you want to get some high-end shoes for a good price, this is a good store to do just that. They also have a very good selections of guns at this location. Obviously they don't offer handguns, but they do have a good selection of shotguns and long rifles. They also sell ammunition so if you need to pick up some ammo, this is a good place to do just that. Overall, good store. The staff is always nice and helpful and you can find all of the sporting items that Big 5 is noted for. read more

I used to spend $$$$ on expensive running shoes because I had problematic feet, and most shoes gave me pain. After I went to a speciality running store and learned what type of shoes and support I needed (high stability, hard/firm insoles) and the proper way to tie running shoelaces, I could just come here to buy way cheaper shoes once I knew what to look for. I love how they have sales all the time, and the website is easy to navigate and tells you what's in stock at your store. Some of the styles may be a bit outdated and might not be the trendiest option, but if you are looking for form over function, then this is the place to go to. And did I mention that you can't beat the prices? Plenty of parking in a shared lot, friendly service. He took the time to listen to what I needed and brought me a couple different shoes and I ended up paying more for shoes I could have went to their warehouse and buying but it was worth it to me as he was such a nice person and HELPED ME So I went to tell the manager how good of a job he did and she looked like she just woke up and so I told her and Left and decided to Yelp it so that it really mattered. There are a couple of Big 5's by my house, this one is the bigger of the two. As a matter of fact this one is bigger than most Big 5 stores that I've been to.The folks at this store are always helpful and friendly. It is also in a great location that is close to a couple of other stores that I shop at. There is plenty of parking with easy access, so bam I can be in and out - done! The other day I went in to get some racquetball balls. They had them at a good price; no line at the register; I paid and bam less than 10 min. I am done and cruising home. read more

HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE... From the moment I walked in. Got the "He-Pulled-Up-On-a-Bicycle Treatment...!!!" Firse the, I guess Asian girl, asked me politly if I needed and help finding anything then as I said "no, just looking," she turned around and exited the short isle that I was looking in, but I stauntly changed my mind and went after her to ask her a question. When I rounded the isle corner she was approached by a younger, taller employee. I could see her gesture to him with her thumb chenched, over the shoulder, pointing backwards motion, couldn't exactly make out what she said, but from what I could gather, it was about big bicycle dude in the isle behind her. I thought, "wow-man," I honestly came here to look for something that I needed. I don't steal. So I walked around the store for a bit, but was uncomfortable in demeanor, so I left, but not without giving her a piece of my mind. I just thought that the whole experience rather rude and distasteful. Won't be going there ever again... I don't know why I have to give any stars to post this place. read more

I have been going to this Big 5 for years. The store is a bit packed but they really do the best with the space they do have. The cashiers and managers have always been friendly and helpful. I tend to mostly buy shoes, running, walking work shoes. They have a good selection and prices. The only unpleasant thing I've experienced (for years now), is a woman that works in the shoe department. EVERY time I go in there she's in a pissed off mood, very short "What size?" Is all she says, with an ATTITUDE. How is it I've gone there for years and this person does nothing but have an attitude and BITCH loudly about other employees not doing their jobs. I was extremely tempted to say "Maybe you should get another job because if I've been coming here randomly for YEARS and EVERY time I do you are BITCHING, maybe you should quit." I mean seriously, it makes my shopping experience SUCK. Everyone else is cool, not sure why she has a job she obviously hates. read more

Lost my Firearm Safety Certificate about 2 years ago so I finally went in to get it replaced on 6/15/22 (I wasn't too concerned about it cuz covid hit hard). It's all about the shoes! For decades, Big 5 has basically built their identity on offering decent athletic shoes at good prices every day. As the parent of two young athletes, I am *constantly* buying athletic shoes. If Big 5 is remembered for nothing else, it's that they consistently offer youth soccer cleats in the $20-$30 range- usually Adidas but also Lotto. Kids high top basketball shoes can be $100+ at Champs, Dick's and other more boutiquey places. I was very pleased to find black and silver Adidas high tops here for just $40. They had a few others, maybe including Nikes in the $55 range as well. Merchandising-wise, this place is the anti-Nordstrom- a bit cramped and disorganized, but the clerks are usually upbeat and patient when crazy kids descend on their store. read more

I don't usually review stores but I had to complain somewhere about the cleanliness of this particular store in the hopes that someone from upper management will recognize this problem. I tried on several clothing items in their 1 dressing room and noticed how disgusting the floor was. There were dust bunnies everywhere and black dirty / dusty / moldy marks all over the perimeters of the floor. Then I went over to the shoe section and noticed the dirt / dust on the hardwood floors throughout the perimeter of the floors there too. I peeked in the warehouse area and the same thing- super dirty. They need to deep clean that store. It's pretty bad. Unhealthy to breathe for employees as well. Great customer service and good selection. Just need to upgrade their store hygiene standard. It's appalling that with all of those employees that no one speaks up. read more

For a chain, you know you can find another one across town so this is not my favorite Big 5. Came in for a water bottle and it took me a little time and two laps around the store to find one. I passed several associates and a manager but no one asked me if I needed any help. I would have said no because I'm a guy but it's nice to have some customer service while they are collecting a check. When I got in line?, there were tow registers but only one line which caused confusion for many and aggravation for me. The clerk explaining the one line policy seemed like she was impatient and frustrated. Believe me, so are we. Get yourself a proper que so we can all get it. Manager keeps buzzing around, but not very helpful. One man asked for service in the ammo department and they loud speakered someone over real quick. So he actually was probably pretty happy. The guy in front of me asked for some help with the watch he was purchasing and aforementioned grumpster said she couldn't manage. I was waiting for her to tell me there was only one line because I had followed the guy in front of me to her register so I could walk the H out, but I'm a big (grumpster myself) so no flack. I paid for my $5 water bottle and waited for the old Thank You. No she didn't. read more

Where do you turn if you arrive late in the season to California and need some beach gear? My Mom insisted that Big 5 would indeed be my best choice. On my list: *A really nice, sturdy beach chair (worthy of several seasons) *a secondary chair for Wee man(though he's really not Wee anymore) *a half dome canopy for Little Dog (yep there's a dog beach here) I was skeptical and had a few surf stores in mind, just in case. As we walked up a saw boogie boards and kayaks in the window......ohhhhhh.....maybe..... This place was jammed packed with sporting equipment. It's super cramped, way over jam packed really. Just to my right, I eye spied the beach chairs. After a few test sits, I chose one, check. Then turn the corner and Moms picks out a bright green secondary chair, boom! Check. Half done canopy, there's a few. I'm wavering on the 20$ or 50$ one. The expensive one makes me cringe, but Mom says buy cheap, get cheap. As we round the corner, I eye spy a beach umbrella for only 25$ on sale, hmmmmmmm, maybe this instead. but....Check. We walk around a bit.....Mom says she wants an exercise bike(uh, you don't even use your treadmill). Can't tell your mother no and it's only 116$ from 169$. Seems sturdy, she looks happy. At the counter, I put up the canopy and ask if it's on sale by any chance. No, says the friendly cashier, but I can offer it to you for 30$?.....what?! Heck yeah. A solid check check check. Mom did admit that the treadmill, went a bit bizerk under her controls and she fell off. But I imagined something much more comical, so I smirked. Thanks Big 5, you came through with flying colors and made my Mom happy. read more

Came in here to see if I could find a wide athletic shoe as I was recovering from ankle surgery and my ankle was swollen. The representative in the shoes department, a younger man, was the least helpful person who showed little interest in making a sale. I asked him to bring out one wide pair of shoes for me and felt like I was bothering him. When I asked him if there were any other brands that came in a wide style he couldn't really answer me. So I left. Won't be returning to this Big 5. The one in Carson or on Hawthorne Street is better. read more

I beg to differ that this store is not suited for the wise people in Palos Verdes. That's where i live and right down the Hill is Big 5. And it's the best place in L.A. to buy affordable quality shoes. Not to mention that it has a huge variety of all sporting gear and more, fairly inexpensive. Due to an ankle injury and metal screwed into my left leg, poor circulation and swelling I can only wear shoes that fit comfortably. The solution was the all leather Spaulding Liberty tennis shoes. If not I would have to wear a wider shoe or different size on one foot. So 3 years ago I bought the 2 pairs available then in my size 12 at this location and another pair at 2 other Big 5 Stores. They all finally needed replacement which is a testament that 4 pairs lasted nearly 3 years being worn almost every day. However to my dismay upon calling Big 5, they informed me that they no longer carried Spaulding shoes. However I still went 2 days ago to see what they had. Picked up a normally $90 pair of white, all leather L.A. Gear tennis shoes on sale for $19.95. Fit great and am a happy camper. Big 5 rocks and offers it all for the outdoor enthusiast. You can get your fishing license here, your lobster license, hunting license and all the necessities that are needed to pursue these hobbies. They frequently have blow-out sales on overstock merchandise, shoes included, which makes the place a haven for frugal shoppers, PV and Wilmington alike. Yes, Big 5 may not be the ideal shopping place for many PV residents, but it sure is for the smart ones. read more
