HORRIBLE customer service! I was at the register with my mother, when a lady with red hair yelled across the store asking our cashier what my mother was doing and saying she's holding up the line. I beg to differ that this store is not suited for the wise people in Palos Verdes. That's where i live and right down the Hill is Big 5. And it's the best place in L.A. to buy affordable quality shoes. Not to mention that it has a huge variety of all sporting gear and more, fairly inexpensive. Due to an ankle injury and metal screwed into my left leg, poor circulation and swelling I can only wear shoes that fit comfortably. The solution was the all leather Spaulding Liberty tennis shoes. If not I would have to wear a wider shoe or different size on one foot. So 3 years ago I bought the 2 pairs available then in my size 12 at this location and another pair at 2 other Big 5 Stores. They all finally needed replacement which is a testament that 4 pairs lasted nearly 3 years being worn almost every day. However to my dismay upon calling Big 5, they informed me that they no longer carried Spaulding shoes. However I still went 2 days ago to see what they had. Picked up a normally $90 pair of white, all leather L.A. Gear tennis shoes on sale for $19.95. Fit great and am a happy camper. Big 5 rocks and offers it all for the outdoor enthusiast. You can get your fishing license here, your lobster license, hunting license and all the necessities that are needed to pursue these hobbies. They frequently have blow-out sales on overstock merchandise, shoes included, which makes the place a haven for frugal shoppers, PV and Wilmington alike. Yes, Big 5 may not be the ideal shopping place for many PV residents, but it sure is for the smart ones. read more

Went in to purchase a specific item and saw an Under Armour sale. Got to the counter and was informed that the sale applied to the striped shirts. Went back to the display and that's exactly what it said. Grabbed a striped shirt and went back to the cashier only to be informed that the sale didn't apply to the color I selected. Had the cashier walk back to the sign with me to inform me I had selected the wrong sku number...really... when it becomes that much of a mystery or smoke and mirrors I am out. Hello Amazon prime. Gotta love the customer service that comes with some brick and mortar. It's no wonder sporting goods stores are a dying breed. When I look at the 1 star reviews, I realize that they are located in Palos Verdes.......Big 5 is definitely not the place for a resident of PV. Like driving a benz all your life and then renting a Corolla and complaining how standard it is. Big 5 is probably the best place for your basic camping/sporting good needs at the best price. This place is so unorganized! I went there 3 days ago looking for a Camelbak, after looking around the entire store, I decided to ask someone. I stood in line to ask the cashier, she insisted they had them over by camping. Went to look again, nope. I went back to the cashier to pay for something and told her that they weren't there. She asked another employee to help me and he told her that they had just packed them up and put them up in the rafters. Waste of time!! The next day, I went back to return the item I had purchased ( $8 under bike seat bag). I was informed that she needed my driver's license. I asked her why, I paid it in cash and had the receipt. The manager had to assist with the return and said if I didn't have my license, they can't process the return. He also pointed to the return policy ( as if that made everything ok). I made a quick stop here today in search of a nice LA Kings t-shirt for my boyfriend. I went straight to their "fan section" which, like almost every sporting goods place was very limited in Kings gear, but overflowing with Lakers and Dodgers stuff... So disappointing. But among all that, I found a t-shirt that was PERFECT except for the size. XXL?! That was not going to work and that was the only size they had left. So I asked the girl at the front register and she helped me out, big time! They had just gotten a new shipment of products, so she checked all the boxes, with no luck. Then, instead of just brushing me off and saying "sorry we don't have any" she took the extra step and looked up on the computer to see if other stores carried that shirt. She even called them for me! Unfortunately, nowhere else had the t-shirt I wanted, at least nowhere within decent driving distance. I need to find one somewhere, ugh! I will probably return to this location if I need something else mainly because of her excellent service! This is one of the more organized and cleaner Big 5's that I have been too (wouldn't expect anything less from a location neighboring Palos Verdes), and yet it is still a place where the staff isn't the most helpful. Don't get me wrong I don't like going into a place and having someone pester me and ask me if I need help or if I'm looking for anything specific or blah blah blah and I get followed around the store, BUT I do like to be asked if I would like some help. I walked around for a while and finally just asked someone if they could help me. They pointed me in the right direction and I pretty much took it from there. They had some pretty good specials because 4th of July is around the corner so I was looking around the outdoors sporting section. I literally, LITERALLY, stood there for 10 minutes until the guy that was right there asked me if I needed something. Now in all fairness he was assisting another customer, but not once did he say he would be right with me or if I needed to see something from the glass case. The service was prompt when I finally got what I needed and checking out wasn't a headache so that was a relief. I know workers from this kind of store aren't die hard athletes or professional hunters so it is understandable that I have as much knowledge about the product as they do. I think Big 5 needs to probably train workers better and at least get employees to be able to answer questions without just reading what's on the label, which is what anyone can do. read more

Came here looking for a bike seat, the selection was about three choices and seats were kinda expensive then what I have seen online at other sports stores. Oh I used to love Big 5...now its more like a clothing store. Is still a decent place, but not as good as it used to be. Came to look for a compression sleeve for my left leg, but the selection was really really limited...like sadly so. I've been going to big five in Torrance for over 35 years I went on Wednesday to ask questions about there delivery on Thursday morning he quoted me a price which was reasonable to me waited there for two hours Thursday morning because there's always a line for certain items went up to the register to pay for what I wanted and the price went up five dollars I've had spoken to the manager the night before after him telling me a certain price that wasn't the case the next day very disappointed I don't see how these businesses stay open when I can purchase almost 97% of the items on Amazon oh well live and learn cannot take anyone's word anymore read more

I called Big 5 to put softball knee pads on hold around 6. I get to Big 5 close to 8:20 and decide to look around to see if there's anything else I would like to purchase. Look at some Carhartt hats and some knives for my job. The hats are located clearly close to the registers and I had nothing in my hand. I go to look at knives, which are clearly in a glass casing. Decided check out the items put on hold and as I turn around the closing manager is giving me a dirty look as if I was taking something or just looking at me funny and the rudest way. When he saw that I saw him he immediately changed his aura but I decided to give him the same look. At this point he's giving me a bit of sass. He says he's going to check stock, just to tell me that they don't have my item. This was highly upsetting, not only did they not put my items on hold but I wouldn't be as upset if the manager wasn't so rude and honestly it seemed as if he wasn't trying to locate my items. read more

It does however have value and if somethings not on sale, ask a floor person when the last sale price was and if it was within a month, you can usually get it. Be careful buying shoes here. They sell some that look lightly used, or have been tried on several times. The staff is great though, as they will give you a 10-15% discount if you point it out (assuming you don't mind shoes that are not factory fresh). I bought a nice pair of Asics and got a 10% discount for them being a display model. I really should knock my old review down to 4 stars for this, but Big 5 is a strong supporter of the 2nd Amendment. For that, they have my utmost respect. read more

This store is affordable, but be prepared to do everything for yourself. I don't know if they're just always understaffed, or if the staff don't like to work, but either way, I almost always have to find things on my own. The staff seem ill-informed and unwilling to help with finding items or answering questions. The shoe department is a huge frustration to me. I used to sell shoes and I believe that the customer needs options. I'm at their store to make a purchase, but when I ask questions, I get answers like "Um.." or "I don't know" or "I don't think so". A shoe department should not be self serve, but this one is. Next time I'll just go into the stock room and get what I need; it's less frustrating! read more

When I need the shoes i come to BIg Five this is by far my favorite place to go to. Coviniently located next to my house. Always low low low prices. Not only good shoes but they also have great variety of fishing, camping basket ball and soccer. good for those atheletic types. :) I found the associated very helpful and friendly. If I could give this location 0 stars, I would. Unfortunately I can't. Avoid this store at all costs but if you must come to this location, beware. On 4/27, my boyfriend and I went in to purchase a Rawlings Baseball glove for me. No one approached us and asked if we needed help. In fact, I swear no one was working that day. After making our selection, we headed to the register. Have you ever dealt with someone who looks like they have absolutely NO IDEA WHAT THEY ARE DOING?? Well, that was our register girl. When she was removing the store sensor, she was struggling. She looked lost and finally rang us up. 4/28 we go to the Dodgers vs giants game. If you have been to Dodger Stadium, you know they heard you into a random lot. We ended up at the top lot and walked our way to field level. It isn't a little walk. I had my glove and when we went through security, the dude said I couldn't go in because THE SECURITY TAG WAS STILL ON IT. I happened to have the receipt and tags but security said I either take it back to my car or throw it away. We walked back to our car which was not easy and we didn't get into the stadium until end of bottom of the 2nd. Today, I go back to this Big 5 and I talked to store manager Enrique. I pulled out the glove and explained to him what happened. Before I could finish he said that this wasn't a security tag for them but for Rawlings with a shitty ass smirk. I asked how was I supposed to know And he didn't answer. He got scissors and cut off the tag and continued to explain to me I should have checked the glove before I walked out the store. I explained to him that when I was in retail, it was up to the EMPLOYEE TO REMOVE ALL SECURITY TAGS AND NOT EXPECT THE CUSTOMER TO DO SO. He had no apologies for me missing part of the game but insisted it was my fault. I ripped the glove out of his hand and walked out. A few mins later I returned to the store to return it. I explained to the girl that I was returning it because the store manager was an ass. Quote me. He came to the register and offered me a coupon. I told him I would take the coupon but I wouldn't use it at this store. When the return was completed, I stood there and asked well?? He had this smirk and said what? THE COUPON!? He stated that since I said I wasn't going to use it at this store I couldn't have it. WTF?!?! I told him, your incompetent staff made me miss 2 full innings at the Dodger game because they couldn't get the damn tag off?!?! He handed me a coupon and I walked out. I get into my car and realize it's for 20%off 2 items. I don't need 2 fucking items! I need 1 thing!!!!! Carson Big 5 is way better but the day I purchased the close we were in the neighborhood. The quality and selection of the products is terrible. My last straw with them happened today. I purchased a "pair" of batting gloves that were stapled to the cardboard. When we came home, we removed both gloves, and they were both left-handed! Arrgh. My son was very disappointed. This has never happened at Sports Authority. Their merchandise is so bad. Yes, they have deals and e-coupons. But for $15, I expected a right and left hand glove. It's not like they were in clearance box. I decided to come here yesterday for a comfy pair of walking shoes. (The previous pair were cute but agonizing.) I went straight to the back and found Dr. Scholl's brand of walking shoes. I had worn a pair from that brand about a year ago. I completely exhausted the shoes from wearing them so much. They make me feel like I'm walking on cotton. They're that cushioned. So, I bought two pairs yesterday in exactly my size and I am utterly delighted. Right now, I am at home and I still haven't removed my shoes. Since I have plantar fasciitis on my feet from running, I have specific needs when purchasing shoes. Also, I have small feet so I could not find my size. Getting help was like pulling teeth AT FIRST and we almost left. But then out came Luke who went out of his way to help us by bringing all the shoes in my size and was very knowledgeable about the support each shoe had to offer based on the brand/model. The brand he recommended met all my needs and just the way he described. Not only that, he gave me the sale price from the week prior even though it was no longer on sale, dropping the price from almost $140 to $40! I called the company who manufactured them, gave them the name and they said the shoes were old and had been discontinued. I told him I bought them at Big 5 and he said they buy them and run them on sale. Now I know why the shoes were wearing down. The inside was old and dry..... I won't be back. This store is HORRIBLE with customer service. Every single time I've come here, it's the same thing. All of the employees just walk past you (almost as if they're trying to avoid you) and don't bother greeting you or asking if you need help. You have to basically help yourself or run around looking for someone to help you. The only good thing about this location is that they have a better selection than most. The only reason I even spent my money here was because they were the only location that had the item I needed and even when I went to purchase it, the cashier didn't even greet me or ask me if I "found everything okay" or even say thank you come again. I called several different stores looking for a specific type of mouthguard, and when i called this location i started off saying that "I'm looking for a specific mouthguard" and the girl who answered was like ok "whats the brand name?" Which i gave her; "Shock Doctor" and then she was like "hold on", and im like "wait, im lookong for a specific type!" "It needs to say "Double Braces Strapless!" My point is, i reoeted this to her at least twice ans she said that they had this product so i said "ok just hole it for me at the register" she agreed. When i get there, and after waiting in line at the register, she said "oh, we sent it back" infront of the manager, whom goes immediately to go get it. And guess what!!! I like this store. Best everyday prices on sporting goods and usually has what's needed. For my kids sports right now football, they have the best deals on mouth gaurds, chin straps, balls, etc... They also have great deals on knives and pellet guns. For fishing, I could use a little more but they always do have something I seem to want. They even have great prices on shoes but maybe not the best selection. But, they always have what's needed at great prices. I even even bought a cheap bow and some arrows here and have had a great time with it in the backyard. I have much more expensive bows but they are way too powerfull for the backyard. So I bought a cheap one here and it's great, perfect for target shooting I the backyard. Perfect weekend warrior store. For example, if you wanted a new bike to ride the strand, you could pick one up here for around $100.00 but if you wanted to hit some serious trails, I would recommend an actual bike shop. I was Returning a cot that came packaged with cuts in the canvas and went with no hassle...which I was pleased. The next part was so much lack of customer service. First off I had troubles finding them and finally they asked for help after I found one. Then before leaving I wanted to make sure this cot didn't have cuts in the canvas. The guy that helped me opened the box to make sure it was good.....THEN left me to put it away. The best part is there are 4 females at the register just standing there not asking to help me as a female. Then while I am at the register trying to put it away one of the ladys has a nerve to say can't you start ringing up too. So now I am left trying to put this cot back in the bag and into the box. This big 5 location is awsome come here for any thing in that category! Sign up for there Emails they send coupons all the time!!!! I've never found any where else that sold shimono fishing poles dirt cheap bought a nice 9 ft shimono surf pole for 17$ with the coupons from there email! Any my favorite part was the customer service as soon as I went to the fishing section I got asked is I needed help and they stayed around if I had any questions they wernt watching me like Hawks like other places and when I needed help they were there didn't ask for his name but it was an old man he was awsome he helped me out on everything I had questions on and he was also helping out an other man out for his fishing trip with his daughter customer service rocks. When I went to go pay the lady was awsome to she was telling me that I can get emails from them but I was already subscribe and she was happy about that she also was help full and fast with my purchase!!
