The biggest downfall of Big Al's is their prices. About $30 for a large pizza and $5 for local 12oz beers is a tad on the expensive side; especially downtown with competition offering similar food/drink for a fraction of the price. $5 for a draft beer isn't too terrible, but we weren't impressed with the selection, considering most places on the block offer more options for imports. They need better daily specials too. On Wednesday, their special was a $5 Hamburger or 8 Wings. We have a hard time ordering a Hamburger at a pizza joint and there are three stores within walking distance that have wings for a fraction of that price. Negative comments aside, the atmosphere is great; its a perfect concept for a pie and pub joint. My wife's sister would love the bicycle-riding frog. The waiters are attentive, friendly, and work really hard. Our waiter vacuumed three times while we were eating in addition to his other multiple tasks. Finally, the food is good and the beer is cold. The dough is different, more of an unleavened bread with a nice crunch. If your looking for a Chicago or NY style, you may want to ask for the thick crust (we didn't try it though). Tip: We ordered the Big Al Special. Only get this pie if you absolutely love olives. The olives were very strong and overpowering. We would have liked to have enjoyed the other fresh toppings (the pie had generous toppings), but we only tasted the salt from the olives. We've had pies with olives before, just never this strong. It wasn't really a bad thing, but it was too much for us (less is more situation). read more

This is NOT just a pizza joint. This is THE pizza joint in the city, if not further afield. Big Al's has taken up two storefronts on 3rd street and is packed on Friday and Saturday nights. The main dining room is totally kitsch with a old town cutouts on one wall and a Cadillac on the other side of the room. But none of that really matters because you are here for the pizza. The crust is thin and crispy. The sauce is plentiful but not overpowering, and does not have a sweet taste. Toppings and cheese are well balanced and include everything from pepperoni and sausage to artichokes and spinach. Pieces are cut into squares. I have ordered in a few times and had them deliver a few times and have never been disappointed. It's my favorite place for pizza even if it is a bit pricey. read more

Absolutely the worst cold pizza delivered, with only one of the 4 items we ordered. We are out-of-town travelers and once Chris (the manager) heard that he had zero solutions to their mistake. I haven't been in here for years and from first walk in am very pleasantly surprised by the cleanliness and updated look. They kept e original trinkets of the car and pone but the straight up look is more presentable. My son and I sat at the bar to catch the Big Ten tourney on the huge tv. We were greeted by a bartender and a friendly server. We ordered a order of mozz garlic bread and a medium pizza split with my son getting cheese and mine with 4 toppings. The place wasn't too busy but the crew was working hard getting things done. The cheese read came out in about 8 minutes and was cooked perfectly. Large serving easily for 4 and tasty. Pizza, timed well was out about 10 minutes later and looked and tasted great. They cut their pizza in small squares making it easy to handle for adults and kiddos alike. Great job. The place is big enough for a large party or four and is attached to Carlie's Bar if you want to belly up after you leave here. Idk if because I ordered and it was delivered if they thought they could get away with sad 8.99 cheese curds but I will probably not be ordering or stopping in again. Over priced food for frozen crust and frozen curds. If prices were lower it would be a different case but 17.49 for a 12" pizza is UNHEARD of unless you're dining in at Big Al's pizza. Ordered and picked up two large pizzas; the Big Al's Special and the Hawaiian and both were delicious. The cheese was perfect and the toppings I could tell were fresh and delicious. My son said the pizza was better than another place that we really like. Looking forward to dining inside very soon. We stopped in for a quick lunch while exploring LaCrosse. My mom & I have a garlic intolerance which makes eating out challenging. The host, manager, servers & kitchen were super awesome about helping us figure out something on the menu we could eat. We ended up with a modified chicken taco pizza which was delish! We always so appreciate when people go the extra mile to make sure we don't get sick! Our server was Alex and she was wonderful too. This pizza is not for the lactose intolerant. Knowing we were in Wisconsin, we were not prepared for the amount of mozzarella on the very thin crust pie. We had a baked potato in Texas once that was the size of a newborn, and that's what you'd expect from Texas. I guess we should have reasoned we'd get a lot of cheese on a pizza in America's Teat. But it was overwhelming. Heavy, dense, and greasy, but it was melted. The pepper jack wontons were not wontons or pepper jack, but, again, were cheesy. The pizza had flavor, though. That keeps the stars from being a 2. Update: Thanks for responding, Ryan. Your level of customer service is not common these days, and I will definitely give Al's another shot next time we're up in Wisconsin. Love the area and the Packers. I would never go back here! This is so disappointing to me since I have always loved going there in the past. #1 SERVICE ~ My friend and I sat at the bar, I ordered a strawberry margarita and my friend ordered one of their "famous ice cream drinks." The bartender/server used almost a 1/2 gallon of ice cream, added the liquor (2 shots to 1/2 gallon of ice cream, you do the math) and proceeded to blend it. Because she didn't add enough liquid (ie. milk, or the correct proportion of booze) she ended up with 2 margarita glasses filled to overflowing. Keep in mind she only ordered one drink. On another occasion we sat at the bar again, one friend ordered a coffee which took over 20 minutes to be brought to us and my other friend ordered a tap beer that was on the other side of the restaurant which took another 20 minutes to be brought to us!!! We had to remind the server that we were still waiting for their drinks! #2 The Food ~ On yet another occasion, I ordered a cheeseburger. I figured it would be pretty hard to screw up. But I thought wrong! It was completely burned on one side, so bad that it made a thumping sound when I bounced it against my plate. TERRIBLE!! Unless you like the taste of charcoal. Only go if you want to be ignored. Went in at 1230 on a Friday for lunch. There were two tables with customers, which should not have been too much for the two waitresses who were just standing talking to each other. I sat there for approximately 10 minutes before one of the waitresses acknowledged my presence. She started to walk towards my table, but only was delivering the check to one of the occupied tables. Apparently two tables at the lunch hour provides all the customers they want. This may be a shock to them, but there are plenty of other restaurants downtown who actually want customers. We ordered the classic "Big Al" (pepperoni, green peppers, onion, etc.). The toppings were piled so high it looked like an open-faced Philly cheese steak. Yet, flavor was absent. The crust was thin, which I generally like, but tasted stale. Even with red pepper flakes, the pizza tasted like cardboard with red pepper flakes. Cheese was squeeky, copious ...and flavorless. I couldn't even appreciate the flavor of the veggies. Quite disappointing. We brought home the leftovers and shared them with a friend who, without prompting said, "This pizza's not that good." If you love quantity, Big Al's your place, because even the small was too big for two people with a large appetite. But if your taste buds have any vote, go elsewhere. read more

We were disappointed in the Big Al's Special pizza that we ordered for carry-out. It had about 1/2 the amount of toppings that it used to. Once I got outside I had to look in the box to see if I received the wrong pizza. We had a pizza delivered about once a month for 3 of us at work and had plenty left over for someones lunch the next day. We only had about 2 pieces left of this pizza when we were done. We probably will not be going back (very disappointed). read more

This place was awesome. My daughter and I enjoyed a pizza here the night before her START session (course registration) at University of Wisconsin La Crosse. The restaurant was very quiet when we were there and we were able to get served very quickly. It is a little bit divey, but I think that made it more fun and relaxing. I love(d) Big Al's and have been eating there for years. Tonight I was incredibly disappointed. I ordered a 12" Taco pizza and Buffalo wings to be delivered. The taco pizza had a burnt taste to it and the wings were some of the strangest tasting wings I've ever had. The "sauce" can only be described as a vinegar black pepper. Nothing Buffalo about it. This was my first time coming to the place, it was nice inside, wasn't too busy but were very understaffed for a Thursday afternoon. I ordered a Philly steak pizza, specifically asked for NO jalapeños because I can't handle heat. I explained that I couldn't handle heat as well. There were more jalapeños on my pizza than any other ingredient. The pizza was SO hot I couldn't even eat it. I'm not one to complain to a waitress but it was unbearable. She offered me a discount which I thought was awesome and was relieved a little bit until my bill came back and there was no discount with "nothing she could do".
