I've had it before and liked it very much, this time though, I ate half and kept feeling not right... Hubby and niece also ate shrimp and tried mine said they tasted ok to them. We had lunch there. It was my first foray into Cajun food in Louisiana. I was with two locals and so I observed the monkey see,monkey do rule. The local had five pounds of crayfish. That seemed like a lot so I ordered two pounds which was just about right for this two hundred pounder. They sell the mud-bugs for $5/Lb. which I am told is somewhat hight due to limited supply. My husband and I decided to go here for a late lunch. The place was quiet and I could tell this was not their busy time. We were greeted quickly by our server who sat us. She was very nice and took our drink order right away. We had the turtle soup and soft shell crab as our appetizers. The soup was a little greasy. You could see the oil floating on top. The crab was wonderful!! Very yummy! For our entrees I had the stuffed crabs with sweet potato fries and my husband had the alligator poboy. The food was good! I wish there had been a little more crab in the crab stuffing. It was mostly fillers and bread crumbs. The reason I'm giving this place 3 stars is because of the price. It's extremely overpriced for being so close to the coast and in a fishing town. For everything we had plus tip we paid $70. It was a little outrageous. I feel like we could have gotten food just as good for half the price somewhere else. Overall our experience was good. We might return but not very often. read more

I have always come to Big Al's to eat seafood whenever I am in Houma on business. For fried seafood, it's good....'course fried seafood really ain't all that hard to get right. Still Al's has always been good. This trip though I decided to try some other dishes and got a cup of gumbo and a bowl of crawfish etouffee. I've made better gumbo than what they served, and the etouffee was just bland and tasteless. My opinion of this placed dropped even further when my coworkers took me to Abears. Now THAT place is down home Cajun cookin'. If you are entertaining folks that don't know any better or you yourself don't know the difference between good Cajun food and tourist Cajun food then Big Al's is just fine. If you are a tourist you might think this is good boiled seafood. There are several other places in Houma to get good quality seafood. The staff although friendly lacked speed. The only bright spot was the charbroiled oysters I have had better but they were decent, I also had the boiled crawfish and boiled shrimp. The crawfish reminded me why I didn't ever eat them in restaurants the shrimp were a little better just not much. Did I mention the staff was slow! Well worth going to. Very large portions. Food tasted great! Only downside was 2 people in our group caught mistakes on their tickets, the waitress said they had new menus ordered and that was new prices. She did change their tickets, but check yours if you go. We had a very large group and with that being said, i thought the wait staff did a great job getting food out, keeping drinks filled, and kept the orders straight. Kind of a nowhere location, but good boiled crawfish, great sandwiches, delicious sides and really good service. The building itself is gorgeous, and the outside seating area is lovely too. Really reasonable prices too, only $4.50 for a pound of crawfish. The po'boys are huge here and the cheaper sandwiches on rolls are giant as well. Come hungry. read more

Good stuff! Get the jalapeño crab poppers. I also had the big Al's platter which had fried everything: shrimp, catfish, oysters, hush puppies, soft crab. If those the regular staples, shrimp and catfish, were the best. I think a crab popper + catfish meal would be a newbies best bet here. read more

I'm in town working for a few days and this was a recommendation I heard from a few people. They weren't wrong! I travel weekly, and am usually alone, so I'm used to bellying up to the bar. When I walked in, there were a few people in the bar taking up most of the space. I saw an open chair pushed off to the side and asked if I could squeeze in. The guys (obvious regulars) immediately made space and told me to have a seat. Looking at the menu, I was a bit overwhelmed. I knew I needed to try crawfish, as suggested by others, but wasn't sure how to even order it! I told the bartender I needed a lot of help. He laughed and said no problem and fully explained ordering off the boiled menu. He didn't try to oversell me on amounts or anything. He eased me into lol. I got a pound of crawfish, half pound shrimp, corn & potatoes. Then the next step! How the heck do I eat these crawfish critters?!? The bartender was about to explain, but then the guys at the bar started showing me. In about 5 minutes everyone in the bar knew I was the yankee in town learning about crawfish and gave tips lol. It was an amazing time! I've loved shrimp my entire life, but on this day I learned crawfish is better! The bartender continued to check in on me ( I wish I remembered his name!) and make sure I was good. Between him and the regulars I felt so at home. It was truly an amazing experience. A local owner who CARES about his business. Amazing, fresh seafood! The gumbo is amazing. Everything always tastes exactly as it should. It is always the same with each visit. Not only are the prices extremely outrageous, but the fried food was horrible! Possible the worst in Houma. The fried gator was so chewy, it was almost inedible. I had the fried crawfish and my mother had the fried shrimp. I found my crawfish to too chewy as well. I also felt that it wasn't seasoned enough. We did have the cheese fries with bacon as our side and that was delicious! When our bill came it was $70!!! We basically paid $70 for cheese fries! Save yourself some grief and go somewheres else. Came down to visit family. There on a Tuesday night. Food was very good and the service was wonderful. Prices in line with other places.

Ate there twice while I was in town, good food, and great staff, anyone who doesn't like this food and place cant be pleased.

We just left from eating crawfish at Big Al's. It could've been way better. We had the chargrilled oysters for appitizers and they were delicious. That is where the good turns to bad. Both my husband and my crawfish come to the table stone cold. I decided to just suck it up and keep mine. However, hubby sent his back only to have "fresh crawfish" returned to the table just as cold as the first time around. Our server was friendly but slow. Even on our way out...we literally ran in to the hostess but never once did she thank us for coming or tell us goodbye, etc. We are greatly disappointed in our overall service and won't be patrons here again anytime soon. Pretty good food, and its very touristy, i highly recommend it for visitors. A little pricey, but you pay for the atmosphere i feel.

On a recommendation from some locals, we ate here while we were on a business trip. We went during the dinner rush so the crowds were about as expected, but even then the waitstaff were pretty attentive. Best seafood restaurant in Houma ! My favorite thing over there is the chicken sausage gumbo with a side of potato salad. It's 8.00$ for small than average size bowl. Diffidently a Cajun style gumbo it's made with a rue! My favorite kind of gumbos! My favorite dessert is the cheese cake , it's the best I found in Houma! When it's time for crawfish season the price per pound is so over priced because there so small. I often get a half of pound of shrimp for 6.00$ and there always so big and good ! Also I tried there hamburger steaks with mash potatoes! Everything homemade! I would recommend anybody to Big Als! read more

The gumbo at Big Al's was so delicious! My husband got the fried seafood plate. I snagged a few fried shrimp. Oh my goodness! They were the best fried shrimp I've ever ate. Next time I am in Houma I am definitely eating at Big Al's. read more

Great fried shrimp poboys and fried pickle chips. The food was fresh and fast. Great for lunch.

I could not have asked for better seafood! Delicious! Being from Mobile, AL, I've had my share of seafood. The Seafood Platter was large enough for two of us to eat with taking home a doggy bag. The sauces to go with the alligator bites and platter were superb. Our waitress was right on cue and her personality made it a very nice experience. I couldn't help leaving here thinking...what a wasted space! The location is incredible, in an old firehouse with super high ceilings, a pleasant courtyard, a cozy bar area, and spacious dining room. Unfortunately, either we got there at a bad time (shift change?) or service is not top of their priority list. We had 3 different people taking (and then forgetting) our drink order. Then the iced tea did come out--watery and tasteless. No worries, I thought...Watery iced tea can be ok with spicy crawfish. Then we were informed that the crawfish was $4.50 a pound, a good $1.50-$2 more a pound than other eateries in the area! This could have been excused if they included corn or something in the boil, but that cost extra. And the crawfish, while tasty, were hard and thick as coconut shells. I cut my finger pretty badly getting into some claw meat. It took forever to get our check, and we had to listen to an episode of Charmed play loudly from the big screen in the bar. Went early on a Thursday night and it was good. Between two of us, we had a dozen raw oysters, an oyster po boy and a shrimp po boy, and two beers, all fine. Not cheap but we didn't find it especially pricey -- abitas were just $2.25, which was a pleasant surprise. One minor complaint was that they butter the bread on the po'boys -- my friend asked for no mayo (and got it) but was disappointed to still get the high-fat treatment. read more
