Have eaten their food quite a bit. Work likes to order their food meetings Nothing really good. I am having the fried shrimp today, small, dry tasteless shrimp. had salads and other fried food, not good a few years ago they opened a place in NOLA. lasted about a year but in their defense it was not a good location. that was the first time I had Al's and it was not good. haven't been here in years but unfortunately it was kind of a disappointing experience. they did have social distance in place as some of the tables were closed off. i went on a thursday night and the restaurant was not very busy and they seemed to be staffed correctly. the service was extremely slow (not just the food). i got a shrimp poboy and the bread didn't seem toasted at all. it was average. we got cheese fries and the fries were soft and kind of cold. i know the others i went with didn't love their food either. i respect anyone in the service industry so i do feel bad leaving a lower review but it just didn't do it for me. i think the service could be improved for sure. we have gotten love seafood for boiling for years and that's always good so i do have to offer that advice. read more

I don't recommend. It was like they didn't clean the crawfish enough. Brown water was at the bottom of the bag and the crawfish tasted like it came straight out the mud hole. But to top it off a big ass beetle/roach I don't know what it was, was in it. read more

We brought family there this past Saturday at about 7:00. Party of 6, we were seated immediately. Big Al's is an old-school style, family place done up in cypress with gingham tablecloths, paper towel rolls on the table with hot sauce and so on. A lot like many of the New Orleans seafood places I ate in as a kid (I'm pretty old, by the way and most of those places are gone). A little Cajun and country music in the background and full bar with some good local beers set a nice tone. Our waitress took a moment or two to get over to us, but once she did, the service was as it always is: friendly, casual (everyone is "honey", "baby" or "dahlin' :-D) We had for appetizers, the crab/jalapeno poppers, a crab cake, fried corn nuggets, hush puppies, and some of the ladies had gumbo or shrimp corn soup: The poppers were home made and quite large - not the small, pre-made ones from Sysco or someplace. The crab cake, likewise was homemade and very, very good. it had a good texture as though it was hand mixed. Sometimes this is a product that tastes like it came out of an extruder like a hot dog or something. Anyway, very good. The corn nuggets were like little fritters but better; creamy inside and crispy outside. Very good. Hush puppies were just okay; a but dense and bland but not bad. Just not great. Soup and gumbo were excellent. The soup is a broth soup, rather than a cream soup like a bisque. One of the ladies is from Michigan and it was too spicy for her, but not for us locals. Actually, it is just well seasoned but not hot. She's just sensitive. :-) For meals, most of us had the boiled shrimp, potatoes and corn. I found the shrimp a bit hotter than usual but they were quite good, as was the rest of the meal. After you make a mess of the table, and your hands, you can go to the wash basin, turn on the tap and wash your hands with the soap. Right by the bar. We are staying in New Orleans and we're looking for a place where the locals go. It's about an hour outside of the city and we really enjoyed the drive. It takes you through some small towns. Anyways the food was great. We got crab and cheese poppers and charbroiled oysters as an appetizer and they were both amazing. For our meals we got fried frog legs with coleslaw and gator with onion rings at the servers advice. OMG it was all knock your socks off!! The onion rings clearly were homemade thin onion rings and were to die for. The frog legs and gator were also great!! I am so so happy we went to where the locals go. All of the food was way better than anything in the French quarter. Oh and I forgot to add they're huge portions!!! I had enough left overs to have a nice lunch the following day. read more

Let's start with the good part... our server. He was great. Dealt with 11 hungry, slightly buzzed merchant mariners with separate tickets and got everything spot on. But that's a review on the server... not Big Al's. Unfortunately, despite our servers best efforts, the food was sub par at best. It was incredibly salty and not especially delicious. Portions were good sized for a bunch of hungry dudes, but a lot of bad food does not equal a good dining experience. I had fried frog legs and a cup of seafood gumbo for an app. The frog was fine, the gumbo had crawfish that tasted like last week. Had boiled shrimp for my entree that, despite being a few miles from the Gulf, tasted like they had been frozen for three weeks prior to being significantly overcooked. They were seasoned meagerly. Had potatoes and corn with the dinner. Both tasted old. Not that this makes for big points at a joint like this, the presentation was really really very bad. Service was awesome, prices were high, and the food was not good, fresh, or unique. Big Al's is eminently missable. Try 1921 for Cajun seafood or Osaka for sushi. read more

Followed with a dressed oyster poboy that wasn't the best I ever had but ok. Service fast and friendly. Will go back next time we are in Houma for the boiled crawfish. read more

Been here before and was well pleased with the seafood and atmosphere. Recently visited and selected the lunch special "hamburger steak". As Great as the seafood is I was expecting the same for this meal however I received a hamburger patty covered in gravy. ?!?! I've lived both in Louisiana and Texas and can assure you that is not a hamburger steak!! Please live up to the Big Al's tradition of Great Food and grind out a Sirloin Patty that would make your Paw Paw Proud and serve it up with fresh grilled onion and mushroom with wine reduction gravy. I had been to Big Al's about 4 or 5 years ago while working in Houma. Back then, the portions were large, the shrimps were large and the quality was excellent. I went back today with my family and had dinner with them. I was slightly disappointed with the quality of the food. I had the "Big Al's Shrimp Salad". The salad looked like something that I usually whip up in a hurry at home. The shrimp were small, very small. Also, they did not have much seasoning on them. They were very bland and average. My kids had the Shrimp baskets. Theirs were a bit better. Still, it was pretty average. Next time, I'll head over to Nancy's and see if their seafood is any better. For now, it will probably be another 4 or 5 years before I return to Big Al's. read more

Holy moly!!! My husband and I went in on a Friday evening craving boiled seafood. He ordered Dungeness crabs with a half pound of boiled shrimp. I ordered the snow crab tray with one added blue crab. Awesome fried alligator, though I'm not exactly well versed in what is great gator and what is not. Been here a couple of times while on business from Houston. The waitresses were nice and um... flirty. Then again, my coworker and I had already had a few pops before we showed up. She was INSISTENT that we try this oyster appetizer. Now, my coworker and I both love oysters, but we like them the way Allah intended - raw. These were grilled oysters with some kind of cheesy topping - SO SO good. She was right on. The space is gorgeous; not much modification since its Fire days. I was looking for a place where I could take a college friend who had never had crawfish and headed down the street to Big Al's. I was a little disappointed that the boiled shrimp and crawfish weren't straight from the pot, but they were pretty tasty nonetheless. After a couple pounds of crawfish, that familiar sniffling started, so I knew the grub was seasoned properly. If boiled seafood DOESN'T make your sinuses run, then send it back! The staff was attentive and friendly. However, I thought the place was somewhat pricey, but then again, they had to deal with all the leftover crawfish and shrimp shells, mounds of used napkins and that seafood smell - so maybe it was worth it. read more

Was recommended to this place by a buddy and it didn't disappoint. Went in for lunch and ended up choosing the Dungeness Crab platter. Normally don't get good seafood back home so I thought I'd go for it. The crab was probably the best boiled crab I have had. Sweet and tender with great flavor. It came with potatoes, corn, and sausage which really was over the top for me for lunch. The only down part was the wait time. It took a good 45 minutes for my food to come out, and that's during lunch. Menu is large with plenty of options. Looks like they have a good variety of things if you aren't into seafood as well. This was our first seafood boil spot that we tried being new to Houma, let alone the state of Louisiana in whole- We were recommended by multiple people we've come across today running errands so it was a must for tonight's dinner. And they did NOT disappoint! Bonnie (I hope I got her name correct) was a delight and super helpful! We were torn between the jalepeno crabmeat poppers and the crawfish pies... we played rock, paper, scissors to make the final decision and the pies won. They were different.. in a good way! Definitely full of crawfish meat so you do get your money worth. I would definitely get them again after I try the jalepeno crabmeat poppers. My significant other got the fried shrimp and fish dinner plate while I got the pound of boiled shrimp with a corn and a side of coleslaw; OMG did I fall in love! Since I was little, we've always gone to Big Al's (even when it was on other side of town) for crawfish. For either dine in or pick up, their boiled crawfish with fixings (sauce, corn, potatoes, and sausage) is easily the best in town. So when coming into town this weekend, it was a no brainer to get some to go. The crawfish were super select since it's been pretty warm all winter. They were well spiced with perfect portion of salt and lemon. Definitely makes coming home even better! read more
