This is the first time I used a mover for moving my entire home. I was pleased with how smooth the process was. The office staff was clear and efficient. They called with a confirmation and followed up after. The movers were polite and hardworking and STRONG. They took care to wrap furniture to prevent damage. My only complaint was that during the unpacking phase they highly discouraged me from moving any boxes around after they had loaded them off the truck. For instance, I was trying to put storage items on the garage shelves. They insisted on doing this for me. I just dropped it and did the work after they left. I'm sure there was a reason for this, but I figured it was mostly about working by the hour. I did appreciate the time they took to set up our beds, and put shelves back on bookcases. My company hired Big Al's to move a new piece of equipment onto our sales floor. I was concerned because it weighs 850 pounds and has a lot of glass in it. Though we had Nippon Express do our big household move from the Bay Area to Seattle, they subcontracted out the move of our baby grand piano to Big Al's company. They answered all my questions and provided me with a very reasonable quote, given the weight of the items and description of the moving project. Big Al's moved me from Vancouver Washington to nowhere, though beautiful, Colorado. I should've written this review 6 to 7 months ago, but I've been busy being retired. I received about four estimates and Big Al's was in the middle of the road for pricing. Thank goodness I'm not a government agency that has to go with The low bidder. I chose Big Al's because my realtor recommended them. The office was on top of everything when ever I called them. They responded quickly and were extremely courteous and professional.Herman and crew were excellent during the loading process. I was a little behind with my packing so they finished it off when they arrived, and the charge for that was nominal. They arrived at my house on time with a crew of five or six. Three of them, including Herman, were driving my belongings to Colorado. What worked out nice for me was they had another job the day after they packed me, which gave me three days of driving instead of just two. They drove it in two days. Since I drove to Colorado by myself, that extra day was great. My complaint is in regards to the lack of communication during the drive, setting an unload time at my new place, and completing the work. You cannot get a hold of Herman because his mailbox is full. He later told me that is a common complaint. He even told me, Al, his brother, told him this but Herman hadn't remedied the issue by the time of my move. When they arrived in Colorado I had two drop sites, one at a storage unit and the other at my son's house. I received one call that they were approaching Boise, but that is it. There was no communication about what time they were arriving at the storage unit. So I got up at 6 AM waiting to hear from them to meet them at the storage unit. I believe it was pushing 11 AM when they finally called. A few more hours of sleep would've been preferable after my 1300 mile drive by myself. I knocked off one star, because I believe communication is extremely important. I wanted to make sure my personal property was going to arrive OK, wouldn't you? Unloading at the storage unit was fine. Then we started the trek up into the mountains to my sons house. I knocked off another star for three reasons: One - they had trouble putting my bed together. They were mixing and matching the frames from two different beds. I finally realize what was going on and had to straighten them out. Two - They were also supposed to put together my granddaughters bed, but at this point it was pushing 8 PM and I felt they were ready to go. Three - I filled out the comment sheet and send it back to their Vancouver Washington office. I was surprised I never received a call from the owner discussing the matter with me. There went the second star. Bottom line, I would have no problem recommending Big Al's for a local move me. I felt the long-haul could've gone more smoothly. Communication, is of the utmost importance in all facets of our lives. Herman, I hope by now people can leave you messages and you communicate better. When I called to see if Big Al's would be able to move our 1000 lb granite dining table along with the rest of our 3 bedroom house Vicky took it in stride and said "that's our specialty, have you seen pictures of my guys?" Vicky was courteous and provided all the details I needed and she scheduled my move. The guys showed up when promised, worked consistently, carefully and diligently until the job was done. We had an extra logistical challenge in that our table had to be taken apart and loaded so that it could be repaired by a 3rd party before the set up in our new house. The guys were very accommodating and everything worked out perfectly. The price I paid was exactly what I was expecting per Vicky's quote. they came to move me at 9 am, i lived in a tiny 856 sq foot apartment. it took them 4.5 hours to move my stuff out and then we drove a few miles down the road to my new home. It took them 5 hours to unload my stuff. I was quoted 4 hours to 6 hours by their customer service rep. i had a 3 man team, one stayed outside in the truck, one was experienced in moving, but was so busy goofying around and joking with the new kid that stood around watching him work. I tired calling to discuss the service or lack there of and never received a call back. i would not recommend them to anyone. Beware.... read more

If there was a way to give negative stars, I would. Big Al's had been recommended by a friend and the reviews around looked good. We have NEVER had any move be done so poorly. We have moved over seas, we have owned and used our own shipping containers, and have moved numerous times, so this wasn't our first moving rodeo. The 3 packers arrived on time and seemed to fully comprehend the duty in front of them. The house was packed and they were, and did, survey the content. The attitude of 2 of the guys was very... let's say "laid back" about our stuff. Bordering on dismissive. It was a long hard day for sure, and anytime we expressed concern about something, we were always assured by the lead packer there was nothing to worry about. Well, there was a lot more to worry about than we could imagine. Not only did they not use the packing material and blankets we had set aside (and then charged us for their own), they also left stains on the carpet and forgot a few things at the end. When we showed them the items, they threw it on top of the content. Yes, threw. Literally, not figuratively. We were worried and irritated, but hoped for the best and went on. The best has been opening our shipping container only to find things broken, mangled and destroyed. Boxes with lids were loaded upside down; boxes labeled HEAVY were placed at the top; a whole metal shelving unit was placed on top of light boxes, crushing them and breaking their content; a pitchfork was thrown in next to a mattress; nothing we had pointed out as a concern was wrapped; and this is just the first couple of feet of the trailer. Every piece of furniture we have pulled out has been twisted and broken. There are no words to describe this mess. It looks like tornado remains. This was a poor loading experience that has turned into a moving nightmare. read more

I had a very good experience during my recent move. - Scheduling the move was easy, even though I needed for the following week. The quoted price was fair (not too low, not too high). All my questions were answered promptly. I got a courtesy call one day before the move. - The movers were at my place right on time. They were extremely courteous, and they were very fun to work with. They sang all the time, they took excellent care of all my belongings, they were quick and efficient. They also helped me to haul some old pieces of trash out of the apartment, which was clearly not something they had to do. - They arrived to my new place quickly, and they unloaded and reassembled everything in a hitch. Nothing was damaged, nothing was lost. They even helped me to set felt tips on the bottom of my furniture to protect my hardwood floors. - I was billed to the last quarter of the hour as promised, and the price was as it was originally quoted. No surprises. - Finally, I got a follow up call from their office to make sure everything went well. It did. I am extremely happy with Big Al's. After all those horror stories about bad movers and damaged property, I'm happy to say I finally found honest and reliable movers in the Portland area. read more

I just had Big Al's move my mother's valuable Steinway grand from Spokane to Portland. They picked the piano up from storage and delivered it right on time to the Portland destination. The guys were very professional, careful, and polite. The piano was carefully packed and not a sign of any damage. We've used Big Al's a few times now. First, they moved our grand piano a few years ago. They did a fine job with it. Recently, we wanted to carpet our upstairs master bedroom/suite. This is in an old house with a narrow, steep stairway. They managed to pack most of our furniture in the bathroom and then took the rest down the stairs. Three days later, they came back and put it all back where it belonged. I was impressed with the care they took. When moving an old oak bookcase, they showed me where it was cracked (I had never even noticed.) before moving it. They used a lot of blankets and pads to make sure my cherry furniture didn't get scratched. Both crews were pleasant and professional. We will use them again. read more

After a VERY long and exhausting drive, in a stuffy Uhaul truck, from California to Vancouver (relocating my entire life) I decided while driving through Eugene I needed help unloading. Scheduling wasn't hard at all. I did a quick Google search for moving companies and called them maybe 3 hours before my arrival. When I arrived at my new home, they were already there waiting for me. Very nice guys, and super efficient with my time span. There was a $100 deposit plus $162 for 2 hours. It was perfect for me. After 16 hours of driving, for my own sanity, I just could not imagine moving all of my belongings the same day. Absolutely awful customer service, cancelled the day of moving! Left us scrambling to find another mover in time! Claimed to have a employee that had covid and said that is why they couldn't move us, they did not call to tell us we had to call THEM 2 hours before the scheduled appointment and hear that they can't help us. Seriously unprofessional, I called the "manager" and she gave me a lot of sass and used a condescending tone explaining what happened. Told me she called us 3 times in the morning at 8am but I have no record on my phone with no messages what I do have in my call log is a missed call from us to them at 9am and then a phone call from them to us that we answered at 10am telling us about the covid case! I don't know what happened there and why they're saying something contradictory to what I am seeing on my end. Either way the response I got is seriously unprofessional and I don't know why they are still in business with that rude and inconsistent attitude. read more

They stayed in communication, both the office and the crew to let me know the schedule and the price. At the last minute we negotiated getting the old one taken to the transfer station for a very modest sum. The team was professional and obviously were a tight team with a lot of experience. When I was getting quotes for my in-town move, I called many local companies. Three companies never called me back after I left clear messages. One company set up an appt. with us for a quote and then did not show. The remaining three companies showed and quoted. I liked them all but eventually chose Big Al's. Big Al's was not the cheapest quote I received (they fell in the middle) but I selected them because they presented their company with a very professional image - clearly outlined my responsibilities and their legal obligations, had company uniforms and logo'd trucks, and the icing on the cake was that the office staff followed up with me a couple of times before I had made my final decision on a company, just to check in. This gave me the sense that they were well-organized (without being pushy). They just seemed reputable from the outset, and they proved themselves to be. They did what they said they were going to do. They called when they were on their way, they showed up to work at the time promised. They inventoried, had me sign off, then started the clock and got to work. They were friendly, looked professional, took care with my furniture, were efficient, and pleasant. Their quote was accurate (actually came in one or two hundred dollars less than quoted) and I definitely felt like I got my money's worth and chose the right company.
