I've been getting my cuts from Igor lately. Both Igor and Andy are great barbers so you can't go wrong with either, but my go-to guy has been Igor. First off, the place is very well kept and clean which is something that is important to me when visiting a barbershop. Secondly, Igor is a perfectionist and pays very close attention to detail which is why the gradient in his fades are always buttery smooth. The price is a bit higher than what I was used to in Brooklyn, but in my opinion it's worth every penny for the feeling you get when you leave that chair. read more

2 stars because the haircut was not bad at all. It was great. However.... I had booked an appointment with Igor (Owner) at 6 pm. But rescheduled it for 7pm as there was an opening. I arrived to the barbershop and Igor was surprised that he had a 7pm. He said he had me at 6pm ( definitely not with the greatest attitude). I showed him the email receipt clearly showing the rescheduling. He didn't say anything and called some other barber. He didn't apologize or at least informed me that he is not available and that someone else would be taking care of me. I specifically booked with Igor given the great reviews. Although the other guy was nice and did a great job with the cut, he lied to my face twice. I asked him twice if he was Igor and he said yeah but definitely knew he was lying as he didn't want to look at me. As someone who works in the corporate/business environment you lose credibility when you lie to your clients. While I was getting my cut, Igor basically blamed me for not picking up his calls (called twice). He apparently wanted to tell me 7pm was not a good time. (Then why even have the 7pm option?) Again, Igor not with the greatest attitude. In regards the cut, again a great job. But I've never been to a place where my barber stopped way too many times to change the music... The Place: I figured why not give this place a try, you never know what you're gonna get from a barbershop until your first haircut. I went on a Sunday, afternoon/evening time. No reservation was needed, I was taken care of as soon as I walked in. My friend sat on a cushioned bench near the door as I was greeted by Artur. There are 3 barbers working at a time. The Haircut: I showed him pictures of 2 general styles that I wanted to merge together. He discussed it with his colleague then motioned me to sit down. He told me that he would start off longer. As soon as he parted my hair with a comb and took off a good 3 inches, I could tell that he knew what he was doing. He paid careful attention to details, and when I gave the hint that I wanted to fix the sides, he already knew what to do. I asked him about keeping the bangs, cutting it shorter, getting a shape up, etc. and I trusted his opinion. By the end of it I was extremely happy with my cut. He took his time, was patient, and listened to every request. It did not feel rushed, and the hairline clean up was neat, leaving no stray hairs. Conversation: Artur made polite conversation, he told me about his friends and said he was from queens too. The amount of conversation was not overwhelming, which is nice. Price: For a regular haircut its $20 without tip, no hot towel/wash. I was not informed of any loyalty cards or any type of reward system. Not sure if they take card as I handed him cash while another customer was seated. Accommodations/Drinks: They have a mini fridge full of mini poland spring's and pepsi's. We were also given straight vodka shots (insert russian house joke here). There are televisions lined up at every chair with movies playing. All in all, this place was comfortable and the barbers know how to make you look good. They seem to tailor the haircut to your head and your face, which is much appreciated. read more

One of the best barbers in NYC! I had Mike who was such a genuine guy and did a great job. Originally I came in just to get my beard trimmed but he insisted on touching up my recent haircut to bring it all together -- that part was complimentary. Here are my full thoughts... Beard Trim (5/5): Mike had a full beard not too long ago and knows how to shape up facial hair. He did an excellent job buzzing out my overgrown mutton chops and fading it beautifully into the front of my beard. Very professional cut. Personality (5/5): Mike is a raw, down-to-earth New Yorker. Very friendly and personable. Asks questions to really get to know you but it's not too chatty to the point where it delays the appointment. Future Beard Growth Advice: (4/5): I really appreciated how honest Mike was about my beard. I've cut too far in on the cheeks over time and he offered great advice on how to grow it out. I asked if he had any favorite beard balms or products and he likes beard oil but didn't have much in the way of recommendations beyond that -- which is fine because I'm already pretty loyal to some beard brands out there. Haircut (5/5): I didn't come in here for a haircut but he didn't like how my other barber did my fade. Given the way my hair grows he recommended a tapered look for the back and touched up my sides -- all on the house. I really appreciated that and it really brought together the whole look. Affordability (4/5): Pretty average costs for NYC. I paid $20 for my beard trim (plus tip). As mentioned above, he didn't charge for touching up my haircut which was very nice. TL;DR: Highly recommend Mike (can't speak to the others there). Not far off the L at all so super easy to get to and worth every penny. read more

Because I am in a vulnerable population, I used Yelp's search feature to find a barber where masks were required. Big Apple said they require masks on all cutters and customers, and all employees have proof of vaccination. Unfortunately when I got to my appointment, the tiny storefront was jammed full of people, and none of them had masks. I asked Igor about the mask policy and he was rude to me and said he would not wear a mask. At least don't be rude about it, man. read more

They advertise their price as a single $. And a basic haircut starts at $25 not 20 witches the average although you can find some that are near the courthouse that are under $20 for a basic haircut. And they charge you if you use your debit card which they are set up to take. They want you to use their ATM machine which has a surcharge on it instead it seems. I am a struggling musician, and I did not expect to spend as the base price for a basic high and tight haircut, $25 plus an additional $1.69 surcharge on what should've been a $20 haircut. So I only wrote in a two dollar tip. And I just got my bank transactions sent via email alert and somehow the total transaction is over $31. They added or change the figure to include the tip they thought they should have received apparently. I will be calling my bank tomorrow and contesting the amount which was changed after I left their shop They should be renamed "The Wormy Apple Barbershop" Because if I want to spend over $31, I could've gone to Chelsea and then there would've been hot men to look at at least. The lady that did my 19 month olds hair did not have patience, yes I get that he is a toddler an squirmy. She also did not finish his hair cut and seemed like she gave up.I gave them 3 different chances over several months and each time I arrived back home only to get some scissors and try to finish the job. They would not do around my ears or the back of my head. Anywhere I could not see they would do a half job to save time. I'm talking clumps of hair that are two inches longer than my quarter inch hair on the back! Any adult should be able to use clippers, especially ones getting paid for it! I have been coming to Andy now for regular cuts every couple of months for four visits so far and have been very happy with the results. I bring my wife along for fine tuning at the end of the cut. I have it cut quite short and let it grow and this is what is hard to get right. He doesn't just cut your hair, he guides you. He'll discuss with you first why you should or shouldn't get the hair style you want. If its the latter, he'll suggest alternatives that fit you better. He'll guide you into every step he makes and make sure you're getting what you want. I mean I've never had a guy like him he tells me everything about my hair so I know what to look for. Decided to try this barber shop out as I was walking by in the East Village. I didn't have an appointment-- i just walked in. Mike was on his lunch break, but took the time out of his day to take care of me and my hair. Held up great conversation, made me feel like I wasn't just meeting him for the first time. Good attention to detail-- he was calmly tuned in as i was desperately trying to explain what kind of haircut i wanted. HORRIBLE barbershop!!!! Second time coming to this place and trust me never again. Found this place on yelp and figured it was cool. First time got a cut with Mike, showed him the picture on yelp page and asked for the sam thing, I think he focused more on talking then the actual cut. Turned out nothing like the haircut I wanted. Second time sat with the lady figured can't try Mike again maybe she will do the trick. I was wrong, talked a lot as well as telling me about her singing career. Personally, I've been going to a different barber before this and Igor was able to fix what the other barber did wrong in a few sessions. King of East Village, and the only place I refer others to for haircuts. Igor, Alex, and Artur are as incredible people as they are barbers. Even having moved out of Stuytown, I always come back here for my biweekly fix.; the level of craftsmanship here is unparalleled - just look at the pictures. In an age where barbers are either rushed to get their job done, or minimally skill novices, you want the old school masters who can cut any style skillfully and consistently. This is the first business I've written a follow-up review on, simply because it deserves all the praise. I'd definitely consider myself rather picky with lifestyle preferences (hence writing about food 24/7), but Big Apple absolutely takes care of my grooming needs. They are experts (master barber Igor has 30+ years of experience) and will go the distance to ensure you leave satisfied with how you look. Business is booming, and as of late, I would actually recommend going on their website (that's right) to make a reservation. They are flexible and will work around your clock if need be.
