We had,a wonderful experience with Big Bones. The people were so helpful. I explained what I was looking for and they found us the perfect companion. We couldn't be more pleased with how easy they made the process.

My partner and I were set on adopting a Pomeranian or similar/mixed. We looked at all the rescues across Denver and northern Colorado and we found our baby girl at Big Bones. Our experience was very pleasant and quick. I made our application on their website and was approved right away. We found a Pomeranian puppy were contacted about a her almost immediately from her foster mom. The foster mom, Stef, has been amazing to work with. We were able to meet her right away with our 2 other dogs and we all fell in love with her immediately. We were able to adopt her that day and she's been a loved member of our family ever since! She is a Pomeranian mixed with chihuahua and Maltese and 100% adorable and good girl.

I applied for one of their rescue pups living at one of their foster mom's homes. Big Bones responded to me the same day I submitted my application. The process was thorough and very streamlined, I was able to pick up my new baby, Sven within 4 days of applying. Laurie, the foster mom is who I communicated and worked with, she was wonderful, responsive and caring. I'm soooooo happy. Sven is adorable, loving and healthy. Enjoying his forever home. Xo

Today I attempted to attend an adoption event in Ft Collins put on by this group ... ANIMAL FRIENDS…read moreALLIANCE. I will not make that mistake again. First, you are not even allowed to just look (not talking about touch) at the animals without completing an application. So I did that. I was looking for a dog/puppy, not a cat and I told them that upfront. When I completed my application I devulged that my cat does not have front claws ... that is when the trouble started. They could not get past that! I currently have a dog and am looking to adopt another (I lost my other dog to illness last year). The lady reviewing the applications proceeded to lecture me on all the options other than declawing. I told her we exhausted those options, it was a decision not made lightly with input from my vet. So that means now I am a person that plans to alter every animal I get??? That is what she inferred. She told me they were going to mark my application that I must sign a contract when adopting a cat (oh by the way, did I not say I was not looking to adopt a cat?). I said fine, then went to look at the pups. She followed me down the isle and continued to rant about cats and wanted me to sign something she was going to add to my file! Enough already! I told her I respect that she has a different view about declawing, she needed to just let it be as I was not looking to adopt another cat. She wouldn't, so when it was obvious other attendees in the store were starting to listen to our conversation, I told her to just throw out my application because I had no intention of staying and listening to her rant any longer. With that I left the store. But that is not the entire story ... the dogs/pups that they did have (very few by the way for an adoption event) all appeared to be Pit bull mixes. So now there is another topic of heated opinion! Beings they have actually been banned in the state a couple of times! I could have ranted on that one given all the children that are attacked and killed by Pit bulls every year! but I didn't go there. I realize many people love the Pit Bull breed. It is not my place to inflict my opinion on them and expect them to accept it as their own. My point thru all of this is the interest of this group is primarily focused on cats, that was very clear. There were lots of kittens there. If this group truly cares about all animals getting good homes they should not be inflicting their beliefs on perspective adopters. Having the initial conversation and putting it on the table is fine, but drop it after that! She will never convince me that for my situation that my cat not having front claws was a bad choice. But she was not interested in the reasons, just harassing me! Obviously not all reputable veterinarians agree with their beliefs or they would not be performing the procedure. There are situations (as with mine) that this is the better choice verses either putting the cat in a homeless situation, or worse.

Then, after you as a customer, are kind enough to provide them with all this detailed information -- they state you will hear from them in 48 hours. WE DIDN'T. When they finally sent an email they stated that we would hear something from them within the NEXT 72 hours (business days). WE DIDN'T. I guess they justify their extremely rude treatment by their last sentence which basically says if you hear nothing from them, you can assume you did not get the cats you attempted to adopt! That is inconsiderate and rude! Their response to this review was they "claimed" they DID tell us there were other people ahead of us trying to adopt the same cat. UNTRUE! (Remember- there were two of us and you did NOT communicate this information to either one of us!) But all readers have to do is look at the multiple other reviewers who also said Almost Home has very poor communication. And, the manager's response was to agree they do have and continue to have this rude policy of failing to notify! I still say if people put in half an hour to answer all their multiple questions then surely they can send out a two minute text informing people they did not get the cat. I was even sorrier that the manager did not agree that they are rude and that in the future they will improve by switching over to a more informative process for the kind people who come to them to adopt their kitties. It appears too many of the cats at Almost Home must be adopted out as a pair which probably decreases their chance of adoption. There was a male volunteer there that seemed like he needs an education about what to say to potential adoptees. He wanted to tell us about THE ORGANIZATION from their point of view instead of providing what he should be saying to customers which is that the adoption fees are very high because it includes neuter/spay, shots and microchip. That is what people want to know so it would be nice if you spent five minutes (or less) teaching them this. As a pair of women with great veterinary care history, animals with longevity, an excellent income, our own home (main home in Colorado and vacation home in Texas) and excellent credit history, it makes me believe if they turn us down, then Almost Home has extremely poor judgement! All of our pets have always been provided with excellent vet care including all shots and even dental care. Our last kitty lived to 14 and only passed away due to renal failure. DO NOT GO TO ALMOST HOME thinking you will be able to adopt soon. They drag out the process more than what is reasonable. ALSO, DO NOT EXPECT GOOD COMMUNICATION or you will be disappointed!

I turned in a stray dog that I was going to adopt if her previous owner didn't come forward. Based on her teeth, face, and personality, she appeared to be less than a year old. Unfortunately, I later discovered that she was pregnant, and after having a stillborn puppy in there care , she became understandably depressed and stopped eating. It's well documented that such traumatic experiences can lead to reactivity in dogs THAT YOU CAN WORK PAST . it was clear upon finding her that she had been abused skinny and scard of dogs and people , a concern I explicitly expressed to the Humane Society staff. What infuriated me the most was their decision to euthanize her as she was there for less then 4 weeks without informing us, stating reactivity and aggression not exploring any of the other rehabilitating options THEY HAVE to keep this yung dog alive . This felt not only unprofessional but also unethical, especially given the provisions of the Colorado Animal Rights Act, which emphasizes the humane treatment of animals. This decision is particularly egregious considering that, in the week I cared for her before turning her in, her reactivity stemmed purely from fear, a natural response to her past trauma and current situation and through out all that she loved kids . She was a scared, young animal in need of care, not a death sentence. I am beyond disappointed with the lack of communication and compassion shown in this situation. To add insult to injury, they have been ignoring my phone calls. When I did manage to speak with someone, the woman on the phone was incredibly rude, speaking to me as if I were a child and twisting my words to justify their decision to euthanize a dog whose life could have been saved. They took a life that deserved to live. Animals deserve better, she deserved better. I hope that by sharing this experience, the Humane Society will reflect on their practices and improve upper management because clearly this decision was made out of pure laziness The avoidable loss of this dog's life is a profound failure on their part. I am the way they are in the way. They handled this whole thing. I'm very hatred for the staff that decided to go through with this and not speak up.

Though the adoption process is long (including a 9 page application, review of app, match-up with a dog, home visit, and finally the actual adoption process), it is so worth it, because for the price of the dog (which varies depending on the age/ability of the dog you are adopting), you get: spay or neuter, vaccinated for distemper/parainfluenza/parvovirus vaccine, deworming, microchip, a 1 hour personal training session or a professional training course at a Shiba Scout Rescue approved facility and senior dogs 7 years or older will also be given a dental if necessary. What I loved most about adopting through the rescue is that we received our dog already knowing that he would be good with our cats and with kids, when we decide to start a family. They keep the dogs for a time to observe them so they can give you a general idea of what kind of dog you are getting. While it is a longer process than adopting a dog through an animal shelter or humane society, I think it is so much more worth it because you already know the dog's personality (for the most part), and whatever problems may arise can be solved through the training course provided in the adoption fee.
