    First Meeting!

Publicly sharing my response to a "How was your adoption experience" survey from LCHS: First let me say that we are thrilled to have adopted a dog, and happy that it was done via the LCHS. But this question is asking about the experience, and to be honest it wasn't great. I have a Loveland address, but it's roughly an hour to reach your facilities. With nobody answering the phone or emails, there was no way for me to put a hold on the dog we wanted, so we had to just take a chance and drive over. With a wait time - once somebody finally came to the door - of over an hour, that means we'd invested at least 3 hours in what we expected to be a waste of time. And I would add that this was not our first visit to LCHS. A previous visit had been completely for nothing. If you think of each aspect of the process as either having a Deterring effect or an Encouraging one, there's too much Deterrent here. I know COVID will be used as an excuse, but that's exactly what it is. People can find a way to get important things done. I also think the price tag is awfully steep, in comparison to equivalent facilities elsewhere. We adopted a puppy for $300 in Austin last year. Why is LCHS double? Deterrent! On a positive note, a lengthy paperwork application would have been an additional Deterrent, and I commend you for not having one; I strongly suggest that you keep it this way if the primary goal is to help put homeless animals into the homes of people who want them.

Larimer Humane Society has a very nice facility for rescue animals in Larimer County. The adoption process was very simple the people were very caring and we were able to spend time with the animal in a room to see if we were a good fit together. I decided on an older cat to match my lifestyle and was glad to know that some of the older animals are sponsored by the caring workers of the humane society.

We adopted Tony, formerly Carson from LHS. He was a rescue kitty. When we got him home, he wanted to hide most of the time. It took two weeks of playing with him to bring him out of his sad shell. Tony now runs around tearing up the house. He's still a bit skittish, but has adapted to his forever home positively. We love him!

I will NEVER surrender an animal here again. I recently had to surrender one of my dogs due to her and our other female dog not getting along. She was good with our boy dog and ALL people, strangers included, and even our 8 month old child. She has NEVER been aggressive towards people. I can almost guarantee that having her spayed would have fixed the problem. When we called for a status update on her, the shelter said they had already put her down because she is aggressive towards all animals and all people. Nothing but lies!!!!. My advice is take EVERY SINGLE possible avenue you can before taking an animal here. You'd be better off letting it loose in the street, at least it would have a chance at life. Larimer humane society has lost all of my respect. RIP sweet Penny, you didn't deserve what you got and I am so sorry I placed you there.

I love this place. I rescued my 5 year old German Shepherd here and she's the best dog ever. I genuinely can't believe someone even gave her up.

That's a good thing when it comes to dealing with new homes for rescue pups. We are totally and completely in love with Piper. She is the perfect fit for our family. BTW, our son adopted from Big Bones the week before we got Piper. He too had a very good experience and got a great little boy who is a perfect fit with his other dog.

We happened upon Sherlock with Big Bones, and were eagerly awaiting to meet this sweet boy. I filled out the lengthy application and was waiting and waiting for any response. Nothing. I wanted to call them, but they don't have a number listed. So more than a week later I went back to the original post on FB about Sherlock and asked if he's possibly already been adopted. The volunteer was nice, she kept me informed and said not yet. I asked why I haven't heard back yet, she said to check junk mail folder. Of course there it was, sitting in junk mail for over 8 days. I answered his question regarding our home ownership explaining that I am the home owner, but my home is in a Trust and will remain that way. Without any other questions we were turned down and told that we are not a good fit for Sherlock, but no explanation as to why. He said we can try to apply for a different dog. WHAT? No thank you! How rude! I am so deeply crushed. I just wanted to meet him. I will never use this agency. Max Fund and plenty of others, are far more reasonable and easier to communicate with and meet the animals in need. Adopters be warned.

Before heading out onto the walkway, there's a large tent with food and a space where you can watch a short video explaining the sanctuary's mission and the work they do. I appreciated having that background because it made the whole experience feel more meaningful once we were out there. It was also nice that you can grab food and bring it out with you. Obviously you cannot feed the animals, but you can enjoy your own food and bring a water bottle while you walk. I grabbed a slice of pizza on the way out and appreciated that flexibility. The volunteers were genuinely kind and clearly passionate about being there. The facility itself is huge, you walk along a long elevated walkway that stretches over the habitats, which gives you a really unique vantage point. We had beautiful weather and great visibility, so we were lucky to see a lot. Some animals were lounging, some sleeping, and others were playing around. I liked how each enclosure felt thoughtfully set up and spacious, you could tell they are trying to give the animals an environment that suits them. If you are an animal lover, it is absolutely worth checking out. I do think it can feel a little expensive without a membership, but when you see the scale of the property and understand the work they are doing, it makes more sense. Overall, it was a really special way to spend the day.

We try to come early January so we can see the eagles when they come through. We missed that window so there were only a few that we saw this time. The walk was breezy with a slight chill, but the day was lovely otherwise. Always a positive experience.

A reason for caution ?…read more About 6 months ago I paid a deposit of $500.00 to "Rocky Mountain Bernedoodles" for a Bernedoodle puppy. I was told I was put on a master list and wait time could be lengthy. I spoke to the owner Tammie personally and she would not provide any further details regarding how many people were on the wait list and what my number in the queue was. She told me to contact her periodically, but I'm not sure for what, if the wait list wasn't given to the clients. I found the lack of clarity a bit strange but I did not pursue the issue further. In June of 2021, I contacted Tammie wondering if I could stop by for a quick visit to see the facilities and some puppies. She initially said no problem and asked me to provide some preferred dates, which I did. Over the next several months she came up with several excuses why I could not come by for a visit. This is when I started to get nervous. During our last email conversation, she said I could not visit until end of August/September, when she would be back on her premises in Montrose. I could be mistaken, but I get the impression she lives outside of Colorado for months at a time. Every time I have been in contact with her, she has been in Alabama. She told me her son manages the facilities in her absence. When looking over the website "Rocky Mountain Bernedoodles" I definitely get the impression it welcomes any potential future puppy purchaser to visit anytime and also that Tammie is the owner/person in charge who runs the operations at the facilities in Montrose. Personally, I would like to see, when you pay a $500.00 deposit and several thousands of dollars in purchase price for your puppy, that there is full transparency regarding the wait list and who is in charge physically at the facilities. In my opinion, there is a disconnect between what is advertised on the website and my own personal experience with the breeder. During this same time, I had a conversation with a previous client of the breeder who had a most unfortunate experience with the breeder and a puppy purchse. Naturally that made me quite uncomfortable. Not being able to visit the facilities during the entire summer, the lack of transparency regarding the waitlist and the owner apparently living out of state frequently, were too many red flags for me and I requested a refund of my $500.00 deposit. Tammie accepted my request and for this I am grateful. It may very well be that "Rocky Mountain Bernedoodles" is a first class, very well operated Bernedoodle breeder, however I wasn't comfortable moving forward and decided to proceed in a different direction.

You should be careful what you say because she can sue for defamation of character and slander. Next, If you're spending $1500 on a puppy, which is normal for this breed, why don't you get it checked out by a vet before hand. Just like you would a car at a mechanic before you bought it. Also, this breed is known for hip dysplacia and elbow issues. Research the breed before buying any dog, people! Giardia can be gotten anywhere from water. Not necessarily from her water. We have it in our well and don't drink the water or give it to our dogs. Test your water before blaming someone else for what you personally have done. Also, I believe it can be cured by antibiotics, so it's not that big a deal. RESEARCH, RESEARCH, RESEARCH! If you can't handle the breed then don't buy the breed and blame the breeder.
