Big Cannoli Lane deserves your visit... The made to order cannoli had that perfect shattering crispy crust and a wonderfully tempered sweetness and creamy centre. It was so good and the service makes this little hidden gem a deserving 5 star.
This gorgeous little cafe surprises you for many reason... it's not some homey little spot. It looks like it comes from some design firm ad. Lovely white warm interiors with beautiful chandeliers, lots of natural light, gorgeous chairs, and an awesome display case with a really nice bar set up. I think this place would make most downtown spots jealous ... and I havent even spoke of the outdoor patio and vaulted ceilings that makes this place so spacious.
I loved stepping into this because the first thing in addition to having my mouth drop in surprise was the super friendly hellos that came from the two behind the counter. I think they're part of the family that owns or runs this spot. There's a cute picture of a group that look similar enough to family on the counter and they were part of it. With genuine smiles and greetings, it just felt like visiting a friend. They were great in explaining the different flavours of cannoli they had and which ones they personally loved or popular. Their enthusiam was definitely infectious and made it hard to make a decision on how many to eat right there.
The cannoli they sold that day came in 2 sizes... small and medium and the filling is whatever your hearts desire! They come in two types... traditional and then specialty. The day I went, traditional was ricotta, vanilla, chocolate and lemon. Their specialty ones were pistachio, chocolate chip, nutella, and oreo. There's a tiny increase in price for larger cannoli and specialty fillings but nothing to stop you from buying one... or 12. In addition to the cannoli, they had gelato (not sure if made in house), other baked Italian treats, and an espresso bar menu.
I cannot stress how great it is to see them only fill the cannoli after you order it. To me, it's the mark of a great place because they put the quality and tastes of their cannoli over convenience and efficiency. Sure it's easier to batch them up in the morning but they'll be soggy and lose that beautiful crisp edge by noon.
Ricotta cannoli - Filled with a rich and creamy filing, this cannoli just made me breath out in absolute joy. The shell was that perfect crisp shatter that you expect from a fresh cannoli shell. I had to be careful to eat over the plate or I'd lose some of the great crust. It had a dusting of powder sugar to give it a slight sweetness. Another thing I loved about this spot is their good hand with the sweetness. It wasn't sugary or fake but the ricotta filling was a nice tempered sweetness. Just enough to bring it all together. Some people may think this filling plain but it's the absolute traditional one that any Italian grandma would stand by. 4.5/5
Lemon cannoli - I loved this one. Similar to the ricotta one, perfect shell... crispy, crunchy, and such a joy to have it shatter as you bite into it. This filling is still light overall even though it was super creamy and silky in texture. The lemon flavour wasn't in your face but it's a nice light refreshing note in each bite. Sometimes you feel you got a bit more flavour. I also liked how this one wasn't super sweet either. A light sweetness to balance the citrus. 5/5
Pistachio cannoli - I still can't get over how good the shell is and the filling as well. This one was a bit more subtle in flavour... it had a more buttery nutty note than the ricotta and a light delicate green colour. I wouldnt say it boldly tasted of pistachio but it's enough to notice it and enjoy each bite. 4.5/5
I also have to appreciate how they filled every shell to the brim ... so it's can enjoy how good and luscious that filling in and still be amazed that you dont feel heavy or being tossed into a sugar coma after eating one.
Cappuccino - I was really surprised by this cappuccino. It was quite good. Robust rich espresso flavour that wasn't bitter or acidic. A nice soft flavour that had a bit of nuttiness to it. Quite delicious and I do appreciate how they had alternative milks. I know some Italian places only do cow's milk. Not here... YAY for that! 4/5
I admit it... I actually used my fingers to kinda sneakily scoop up some of the filling dripped on the plate. It was that good. If it wasn't completely wrong, I would be licking the plate. Oh god... now I've tried this place, I think my continued search for cannolis in Toronto is going to be miserable because I found a perfect spot so early in my search! I guess I'll just need to keep coming back to set my palate and tastebuds straight. read more
