A must on our way North from Tulsa and usually have other family members meet us there. Just call ahead and let them know you're coming if you have a big party. You can get a 28 oz. top sirloin steak here called the butt club for two for $34.99 I ordered the filet medium well, hubby ordered the small ribeye with a side that's included, baked potato. The salad bar is included with every meal here. The catfish is extraordinarily excellent here, arrive early as they sell out of this fish fast. The filet steak was wrapped in bacon and cooked to perfection. VERY tender. Seasoned perfectly. Cooked perfectly. I didn't take a picture of my filet as I couldn't wait after that first bite. Big Ed's steakhouse has persisted in this corner of southeast Kansas for decades, which would seem to attest to an endorsement from locals. Walking in is something of a trip into simpler times, with a modest space taken up by woodgrain formica tables and green vinyl booths. There are old black and white photos on the walls from the neighborhood, another testament to history. The service comes with a friendly casual grace. There is no alcohol served, and BYOB is not allowed, which belies the tradition of matching red meat with a glass of red wine or beer. Here the echoes of Prohibition result in a choice of soda pop, water or a milkshake. The old school charm could be a pleasure if only the food were good. The salad "bar" is really a small cart with tired lettuce, no tomatoes, and an odd selection of items transferred from large containers of grocery store equivalents, like coleslaw and macaroni salad. One trip comes with a steak, which is more than enough. The steaks are soft and somewhat mushy, as opposed to tender, likely the result of treatment with an enzymatic tenderizer. My porterhouse was anemic and so thin that medium rare was a joke: the outer third cooked entirely through, with a hint of pink not to be found until close to the bone. The usual potatoes are there; hard to make a bad baked potato, although the skin lacked texture or salt. "Homemade" fries were limp, and, there was also an unusual alternative on the menu called "frozen" fries, which we did not dare. Other menu items are available which are surely plunged from the freezer directly into the deep fryer. I have to guess Big Ed's holds on by keeping costs low, and benefits from a minimum of convenient alternatives. Whoever Big Ed was is likely long gone and looking down in disappointment. It seems a little sad because this is the part of the world where there are people who know how to cut and grill a proper steak. Next time I'll keep driving. read more

What a selection of appetizers! We had the grilled chicken and it was really good. Better than you may expect at a place that specializes in steak and their geographical location. This is not your Michelin star restaurant, in fact most will never have heard of the town where this restaurant is at. This is a steakhouse for those who live in the area and it's always packed. I love their all you can eat shrimp night. I remember coming to eat here after I pass every semester in nursing school. The ambience is good considering it's a local restaurant. Visiting family in rural Altoona Kansas. We wanted to go to somewhere local. We love eating at small town restaurants. We were very disappointed in the quality of food. Ordered 2 burgers that were frozen and cooked too long. Ordered 6 oz fillet that was maybe a 4 oz steak. Ordered chicken strips that tasted like frozen strips from Walmart. My son did like his grilled chicken. The sweet tea tasted old and was not sweet. Asked for sugar, waitress bought us about 8 packets and informed us thats all they had left. We spent $90 on food that was below mediocre, over half of the meal went home to feed to the dogs Waitress was very sweet and professional. She was very apologetic. read more

Great Steak! My wife and I were traveling thru Kansas and were going from Chanute to Coffeyville. A guy in Chanute suggested Big Ed's in Thayer. We pulled up and the building was a little intimidating considering it was supposed to be this big great steakhouse. DON'T let the building fool you. They simply invested in making great steaks. I had the ribeye and it was chard outside and perfectly tender inside. My wife had the chicken and loved it. The salad bar was good and the young waitress was on top of getting us anything we needed. With the side salad self selected from a salad bar with six or more salad options the meal was simple and tasty. My husband and I make it a point to drive the two hours from Lawrence, Ks down to this place every 2-3 months. We LOVE the steaks! From ribeyes, strips and filets to their huge "Butt club for two" ... You'll be impressed with the food! The building, the parking lot, the decor ... Not so much. As an added bonus ... I don't even remember why we decided to go here, but I'm glad we did! This is def a dive! Small town in the middle of nothing. Plastic table clothes. Old time dining room. Wow! This place is really good. We were passing through and stopped. The steak was one of the best I have ever had. It was called the Butt Sirloin. The prices were fair. They do not take credit cards. Cash or check. The decor is really dated, it adds to the charm. The servers where nice and the manager lady was nice and came over and offered travel suggestions. I believe the steak was cooked over an open flame. The char on the steak was just right. I ordered medium rare and it was perfect. So many times, I have been to a steakhouse only to be disappointed, as I feel I could have done better at home (I am an avid griller), but this steak was better. Wow! The place really is like 1972 inside. The smoke wafting out of the stack on top drew me in. We were at the gas station next door. The parking lot was full and there was no wait for a table. My little girls cheeseburger tasted like real grilled meat! I loved the place, too bad it's so far from home! Everyone was watching my baby eat watermelon, every server stopped by to say hello! Food is amazing. On Saturday nights (and Fridays too during Lent), they have an all-u-can-eat shrimp special around $20. You can choose fried or boiled. Boiled are my fave; they are huge, like prawns, and delicious! The waffle fries are delish too. And the bartender makes a tasty Bloody Mary. One drawback, you must have a membership to order alcohol, but you can purchase one when you're there. The steaks are very good, along with the salad, baked potato, and roll. My husband DRAGGED me here! We only live 30 minutes away, but I'm not into places that don't have windows-you go to windowless places for strippers; not strip steak, right!? WOW, I was amazed as to how good the food was! I had the filet. It was cooked exactly as ordered. My baked potato was great, except that it was beyond weird to be having a steak and get sour cream in individual packets, like you get at Wendy's fast food chain. The salad bar was such a nice surprise with all the homemade salads. The pasta salad as well as the potato salad with the little smokies are my favorites! I can't wait to go back! We went @ 6pm on a Thursday night and we got right in; no waiting, as had anticipated. Alcohol was inexpensive, food was inexpensive. Very good. The restaurant is a decent size. They only accept cash or checks so no credit cards. On Saturdays, they have all you can shrimp. They do have specials each day. They have a chicken fried steak special on Wednesdays. I asked the about this and they said that the difference is that you can get chicken fried steak any day but it doesn't come with gravy or mashed potatoes. Only on Wednesday. Kind of ruins the purpose of chicken fried steak if there's no gravy. But anyways, I got the Mountain oysters as an appetizer and the butt sirloin (medium rare) with waffle fries. The Mountain Oysters were the first time I've ever eaten anything like that and they were very good. Now I want to go to Colorado and try the Rocky Mountain oysters.The Butt sirloin was also very good. Not a lot of seasoning on it. There was a little bit of salt but I kind of hoped there would be some more seasoning to it. But anyways, I will be coming back.
