I really loved the atmosphere. Salad bar, delicious. Fried cauliflower and the onion blossom, delicious. We got the Butt Club for 2 and the steak was HUGE and so so good! Margarita's were top tier as well! The service was great too!

Don't judge Big Ed's by the outside because the food inside is outstanding!

Great Steak! My wife and I were traveling thru Kansas and were going from Chanute to Coffeyville. A guy in Chanute suggested Big Ed's in Thayer. We pulled up and the building was a little intimidating considering it was supposed to be this big great steakhouse. DON'T let the building fool you. They simply invested in making great steaks. I had the ribeye and it was chard outside and perfectly tender inside. My wife had the chicken and loved it. The salad bar was good and the young waitress was on top of getting us anything we needed. Wow, a big surprise out on U.S. 169 out in the prairie.

I am a steak fanatic. I've had steak everywhere. I've had $60 steak, but nothing compares to the love and sweat that goes into Big Ed's steaks!

Great food. Steaks fire cooked and as good as you can get anywhere. Down home feeling where you are treated like family. Highly recommend.

The steaks were good but everything else was right off the Sysco truck. Definately not worth the overall price. We won't go back.

The service was wonderful, the portions were generous...the fried mushrooms, boiled shrimp and salad bar were wonderful starters. I had the best prime rib here! I haven't had anything so tastefully perfect in a long time. My husband raved about his steak too. I enjoyed the laid back, country setting, and great service. I'm excited to have found a go-to place while visiting Kansas.

The last time we went there the food was excellent the service was even better. Went there tonight ordered a flight of their special drinks they were excellent. When we came to the meal the prime rib Burger in the picture was delicious, the onion burger was very good tasting not cooked properly we ordered it medium rare and it came out medium well and a little dried out the kicker was there was pretty much a whole side of onion on there not sliced. We ordered the large salad bar which was 650 for one small plate the wife enjoys pasta salad so she tried all of their pasta salad one dill pickle and those couple spoons of cottage cheese the only thing edible was the cottage cheese in the pickle everything else taste it like bland macaroni with very big hunks and green pepper and onion mixed in. She noticed this to the waitress after the waitress asked if we were done with it it was still a completely full plate with about four bites taken out. The waitress did not mention anything she didn't offer to reduce the price or take it off of the ticket. Very disappointing. As if there was a no care attitude available this evening they should have put that on the menu. As I said the food was pretty much delicious with a few adjustments made at the table. Will we go back that's up in the air. I'm including pictures of the meal and of the receipt

Add them together and split the difference: three stars. The plusses about the hotel are that it looks cute and has themed rooms. The lobby is very cozy, with comfy couches and a little bar off to the side in a corner. (Fun fact: The bar at Grand Central Hotel was the first operating bar in this town!) It's a pet-friendly hotel. You also get warm muffins and coffee at breakfast time. The minuses about the hotel: Someone had used the restroom in the bathroom in my room and didn't flush. When I tried to flush, it wouldn't. So I asked for a new room, of course. In my new room, the TV didn't work (which was no big deal because I don't watch TV anyway) and the door wouldn't lock. So I went downstairs and talked to the person in charge, and she muttered something like, "Kids these days don't know how to get into a hotel room without a key card." I was like, um? I don't know how young or stupid you think I am, but I'm not too young or stupid to know how to operate a lock. (Also: Thanks for thinking I'm young!) It turns out that you need to jerry-rig the knob to lock it. If you need to finesse a lock in order for it to work, it sounds like you need to replace the lock, or come up with a different system. However, later that night, I had the pleasure of eating at the hotel restaurant. The Grand Central Grill is definitely the place to eat in the area. I got the chicken fried steak, which is a Kansas specialty and served here Friday and Saturday nights only. It came with mounds of mashed potatoes and gravy, and it was one of the best dishes I had in south central Kansas. The Caesar salad was just OK (the dressing came poured on the top and not mixed, which it should be), but the chicken fried steak made up for that. They have a decent wine list for a small town, which was appreciated by me. The service was great, and even though they were busy, our server was very attentive and we got everything we needed.

So when we had a chance to partake in a large family gathering at Murphy's I was looking forward to the experience. Upon walking in, I was very surprised at the place as it reminded more of an old diner than a steakhouse. Open since 1946, Murphy's looks like it's been around that long. Lined with red leather seated booths, there was no place for our group of nine to sit except for a round corner booth where we all crammed into like sardines. The menu was quaint, filled with mainly diner dishes and comfort foods. I decided on the favorite, the "Hot Hamburger", which was basically a hamburger on toast, topped with french fries and onions, coated with brown gravy. Service was fine given the fact they were packed with patrons when we arrived. The food was hot and fresh, including the homemade french fries. Everyone in our group seemed content with their food choices. The only real problem was how we were crammed into one little booth and there was no room to relax and visit. I would recommend Murphy's to anyone looking for a home style meal. If you're looking for a steak house experience, try somewhere else or you'll be disappointed.
