Went to this 30 year old hole in the wall restaurant with a party of 7 last night. Unfortunately, I didn't get pictures. It is an old bar/steakhouse. Classic tin top tucked away and the fact they have been open this long says something. The atmosphere was as expected. Dim lighting, a roadhouse style bar, dinning hall next to the pool tables, friendly service and not too busy but a local favorite. The food was pretty good. We ordered some spicy fried pickles that were good. It wasn't a big proportion by any means though. Their burger menu looks promising with many options. I don't like crinkle frys and that's the only kind they have paired with a burger so I tried something different as I've been told their smoked potatoes are delish. So, I ordered the loaded pulled pork smoked potato. It was huge!!! I took half home. The potatoes could have been cooked just a bit longer and it was not hot enough - the only real complaint around the table but that didn't stop us from eating ours. The pulled pork was good. Seems a little pricy for what it was but it was a lot of food. Other people ordered the 16 oz ribeye special for $35. It came with a salad, smoked baked potato, green beans and I think some Texas toast but I don't remember. It did look like a tasty cut of meat. There was a shrimp plate ordered, and a couple burgers. Everyone ate their food and there were no complaints other than the not hot potatoes. I also ordered ice tea. It was really watered down so I would pass on that next time. I'm normally more critical of the food I eat. But playing pool at Wagon Wheel for league night I decided to have their patty melt. Dear lord, one of my favorites, it was excellent. As good as J's Carey out patty melt. Maybe even better, going to have to eat a J's patty melt tomorrow......., Leftovers by teammates, shrimp was also excellent. Sweet potato fries available were good. But that's not the kicker of the evening. Smoked mashed potatoes & gravy. I feel like I've reached an achievement level in life dear God the smoked mashed potatoes & gravy were absolutely amazing. Never had anything comparable to them. Will have to try the chicken fried steak with smoked mashed potatoes next time. Good service. Typical eatery with pool tables scene, wouldn't think that it's the oldest bar in Emporia forced to move to a new location, food was very very good. I like dives: The food is usually remarkable because few customers will tolerate inferior food and sketchy atmosphere. How many ways does Wagon Wheel qualify as a dive? Side road location. Check. Nondescript, industrial metal building --possibly old storage shed--with minimal signage to announce its presence. Check. Dirt parking lot. Check. Worn interior with 60s-era bar feel. Check. Billiard table in the dining room. Double check: 2 tables. Wagon Wheel is divided between bar and dining area, though the line between them is hazy. I hoped to find a little known spot I'd return to again and again for the steak other Yelpers salivated over. It is little known--judging by the lack of reviews--but I won't return and didn't try the steak. Steaks change daily so call before arriving to learn what's on the menu. Tonight, it was ribeye for $30, or "surf & turf"-- the same thing plus two shrimp for an additional $6. My server explained the steaks are approximately a pound of meat. Dining alone, that's more than I wanted. Both choices would have also put me over my dinner per diem. So, I went with chicken wings--8 for $10--plus a fried mushroom appetizer. WW has several wing sauce options and I thought I'd try 2 or 3. "The chef says 'no' because we make our own sauces," I was told--which didn't really explain why I couldn't mix them. The fried mushrooms came out quickly, hot, and tasty with a heavy, seasoned batter. However, the $3.99 charge felt pricey for four slices--not even a whole large mushroom. Parmesan garlic wings arrived just after finishing the mushroom and were also hot. They were tasty also with a super crispy coating but not remarkable. At supper time midweek when I wasn't dining alone there were 2-3 other parties present, so I had attentive service. But, it was slow for the staff, which filled time describing in street language faults of other employees, and diners' incorrect opinions about how food should be prepared. I wouldn't call Wagon Wheel a steakhouse. I'd say it's the place for an authentic roadhouse atmosphere and menu. read more

Been there many times, never had a bad experience. Food always hot, and the owner doesn't allow anyone else to cook a steak; he cooks the steaks. Period. And they're perfect no matter how you want them. Ribs are fall-off-the-bone superb and the chicken fry steaks are huge as are the baked (smoked) potatoes. The place doesn't look like much from the outside and the inside isn't all that fancy either but the food is predictably good. Maybe a tad on the expensive-for-the-serving-size but it will taste great. read more

I was in town visiting and some local friends and I went to eat here. The Strip steak they had was HUGE so I shared it, and then we each got our own salad and potato. The salad was fresh and good. What you will get are incredibly tasty grilled and seasoned ribeyes and KC strip steaks that can easily serve two. But don't do that. Order a steak apiece along with smoked baked potatoes and you'll have a gourmet meal with leftovers to take home. It's definitely a bar and grill atmosphere, but kick back and enjoy it. The Wagon Wheel was recommended by a person at the hotel I was staying at. I entered the dining room and no one said one word to me. I sat down at a booth and watched as someone from the kitchen area served folks in the booths in front of and behind mine. I sat and sat and sat for about 6 minutes and no one said so much as a word to me. No one asked what I wanted or told me they would be right with me. I got up and left and am writing this review from across the street at the Chinese buffet while enjoying a very tasty Chinese dinner. I will never even walk in the Wagon wheel again, they are very rude, indifferent, and act like it's a privilege for you to spend your money in there. If there was a "ZERO" rating that's what they would get. Forget Wagon Wheel and get some good service across the street or at one of the many places to eat within walking distance. read more

The waitstaff causes me to give this place 3 stars. Our food was hot and came out quickly. That being said: the chicken fried steak tasted like their oil was old. My fries were anemic and my wife's mashed potatoes were instant. I think they are used to cooking for an older crowd because there was a serious lack of salt on both of our dishes. We ordered an appetizer of their fried mushrooms. We received 4 for the price of $3.99. The salad was small and lacking. Our total bill seemed excessive for the amount of and quality of food we received. It's doubtful we will go back anytime soon. read more
