We ordered the 2 for 1 fish and chips, as well as the 2 for 1 flourless, chocolate torte on Doordash. The fish on their menu is listed as cod with chips and lemon caper mayo. The fish was overly battered, with only a very thin piece of fish inside. It was much overdone, rubbery and did not taste good, on all 4 pieces. The lemon caper mayo was very good though, had a nice savoury flavor. They were generous with the fries, but by the time they got to our house, they were soggy. The flourless hazelnut chocolate ganache torte with raspberry coulis, wasn't the most appetizing. It had a chai flavor, cardamom and ginger taste. Which didn't go well with the raspberry. Whipped cream melted into liquid. This order came to just under $60, which seemed pricey. I heard a lot of good things about this place since I moved to Calgary and was quite disappointed. We came here twice and tried 4 types of entrees: duck breast, AAA elk sirloin, beef sirloin and lamb shank. They were all so tender and paired well with the sides. Some friends and I decided to try out Big Fish & Open Range during their customer appreciation week at the beginning of March. Given the high ratings on Yelp and Google, I was quite excited to see what they had to offer. We were greeted warmly when we walked in, and we were given two menus: one called Big Fish which contained seafood dishes and one called Open Range which contained meat dishes. A bit of a strange concept, I thought, almost like two restaurants in one. We started with the seafood appy platter, which was alright. The smoked salmon was a bit leathery, but the scallops were cooked beautifully. I liked the chutney and tartar sauce as well. For my main, I ordered the pork chop with a sweet potato hash and mushroom risotto ($49). Unfortunately I was very disappointed. The pork chop was quite overcooked and almost tough to eat, and the risotto had the texture of fried rice. The flavors were fine, but the execution of the dish impacted my eating experience so much that it was hard to look past that. We chose not to stay for dessert, as we were a bit wary at that point, but I really hope this was just an off day, as the ideas behind the dishes have great potential--they just need a bit more precision on execution. read more

Came here on a Saturday night and two out of three dishes were very good. I got the apricot glazed wild boar chop, delicious!! We also got the Canadian duck breast which was also wonderful. Booked table for 9.15pm. We were running 10 minutes late, so I called to let them know. We were told that they closed the kitchen. We were already in a taxi on our way. No notification that it was closed, even though they had our booking details, including phone and email. Absolutely disgraceful and unprofessional behavior, disrespectful of customers. Total disclosure - I came here because I walked out on a disappointing fish & chips meal down the street at Joeys Fish Shack so maybe my head was tied into disappointment. The boys took me out for Saturday brunch on Mother's Day weekend. We made reservations on OpenTable but was also asked to confirm our reservation via phone. Our table was all set and ready for us when we arrived (condiments and ice water were set up a few minutes before our reserved time). We ordered the Seafood Platter to start: the scallops were fresh, tender and sweet. The beer battered shrimp was lightly battered, crunchy and juicy. A pair of condiments (house made tartar sauce and smoked tomato chutney) and crackers complemented the cured Arctic char salmon pate, and smoked salmon perfectly. For the mains, I ordered the eggs Benny with blue crab(which I enjoyed immensely). Our son had the pork belly omelette and hubby had smoked lox, poached eggs and brioche. Last night my wife and I had supper at Big Fish & Open Range - Renfrew. We had B.C. Mussels for our appetizer (these were fresh and excellent). My wife tried oven roasted Atlantic cod on ginger rice, I had pistachio crusted Arctic char on mushroom herb risotto. I chose a muscadet and my wife chose a Riesling to pair with our meals. For dessert we shared orange crème caramel topped with blueberries. Everything was delicious, the fish was cooked to perfection and served at the right temperature, and service was prompt, friendly, and efficient. The dining room is small, cozy, and intimate. What a fantastic experience! It was small and quaint inside and felt real homelike and comfortable. The wine list was great with very reasonable prices and the service was superb! Our group started with the appetizer platters - both fish and game. The char on the fish board and the venison on the game board were my favorite meats. The calamari was also delightful. And the Gouda cheese - just wow! For the main I had the special surf & turf - but I also tried my friend's meal which was the walleye. And the pecan pie to wrap it up - made just like my mother makes it! Everything was so good! I will certainly be back for more! Decided to try Big Fish/Open Range.  Ordered via Uber Eats.    Ordered the following: - Nicoise Salad - pieces of nicely seasoned crusted tuna on top of a spring mix salad with seedless black olives, cubed beets, cubed potato, deep-fried anchovies.  A nice vinaigrette tied the Niciose Salad together. - Roasted Bone Marrow - 2 delicious bone marrow with 2 pieces of baguette and a chimichurri sauce - Shrimp & Asparagus Lasagna - mum loves this dish!  It's like a hug on a cold blnight!  Comfort food! - Pistachio crusted Arctic Char- comes with beets, red peppers, mushroom risotto  - truly fresh and so good! - Local Ale Braised Lamb Shank  - a hunking big fall off the bone lamb shank with scalloped potatoes, beets, sausage, broccoli and a hearty rich sauce So darn good!  When this pandemic is over, got to visit this restaurant! read more

We wanted to try some of the game and freshwater fish that Alberta is known for, while visiting. While several places offer bison, this restaurant was the only one that offered elk steak and walleye. Even though our reservation was in mid-afternoon, the manager Andy took great care of us! From a fascinating take on white sangria (it had dragonfruit in it) to their housemade ice cream, his recommendations were spot on. My husband had the elk sirloin, rare, with a baked potato that had been scooped out and stuffed with corn, poblano, and cheese mixture. It was all so delicious, and the presentation was beautiful. I had a walleye filet with sauteed spinach & bacon on top, served on a bed of mashed, seasoned red potatoes. The bacon & spinach were the perfect foil for the fish. And the fish skin was crispy, yum! No bones or scales...prepped really well. Portions were generous, we were absolutely stuffed. And though I loved my fish, I want to return someday to get that tender elk and stuffed potato myself.
