I chose Vintage Chophouse based on the solid reviews I saw here on Yelp, and while parts of the meal lived up to the hype, some aspects left me underwhelmed. We started with the appetizers, the beef carpaccio and Caesar salad, both were excellent and really set a good tone for the evening. The carpaccio was well-seasoned and fresh, and the salad had a nice balance of creamy and crisp. For our main, we went with the Canada Prime bone-in porterhouse, which came with two sides. The jalapeño creamed corn tasted more like jalapeño grits than corn, which threw me off a bit, it wasn't really my thing. The twice-cooked fingerlings with bacon, chives, and sour cream, on the other hand, were delicious, crispy, flavorful, and well-balanced. Unfortunately, the steak itself missed the mark for me. It arrived lukewarm, not hot like you'd expect from a high-end steakhouse, which was disappointing. For a cut that's supposed to be the star of the show, the temperature really detracted from the experience. To finish off, we kept it light with two scoops of gelato, one cherry vanilla and the other a lemon sorbet. Both were refreshing and hit the spot for a light, sweet ending. Service was definitely a strong point, our server was friendly, attentive, and professional throughout the night. Overall, it was a mixed experience: great apps, strong service, but the main event which was the steak it just didn't deliver like I'd hoped. Perfect spot for a date night. The service was amazing, so attentive and on point. Modern but has a classic steakhouse vibe. I am not a huge fan of steaks, so I got a few sides.The scallops were cooked to perfection. They melted in my mouth and I would easily order this again. The truffle fries and broccolini were both really good. They would make a great side with a steak. Otherwise the other food are just ok. I thought the bolognese was the best of all and it is not even an Italian restaurant. Lava cake is good !! I've heard great things about this place and it's a solid steakhouse. Upscale and classy with live jazz music for an hour on Saturday nights, it's a perfect venue to impress your date! Staff are stellar and happily explain the cuts to you and provide their recommendations. ENTREE: Pan roasted Icelandic Cod (with creamy spaghetti squash, roasted yam puree, green beans and sage butter) had a nicer presentation than I've seen from other reviews. The fish was beautiful and flakey and nicely seasoned. Wish there was a bit more textural contrast in the dish as everything was very creamy and rich. SIGNATURE SIDE: Mac and cheese (with smoked cheddar) had a pretty presentation. Though very buttery, it could use a bit more flavour. DESSERT: Pear Tonka Bean Galette (Praline, roasted pear caramel, vanilla bean gelato) is a shareable size and extremely sweet. It's like eating a warm apple pie filling and the galette is a soft cakey texture slightly underbaked. Steaks came out undercooked and cold. It was strange, as they looked grilled on the plate (plate was also cold, not even warm). Went this steakhouse after visiting Banff. We went for lunch and the service was quick and pleasant. The steak was quite different from what we had in the US. The meat is definitely on the leaner side therefore not as tender as American beef. The restaurant was nice and clean inside. The must try item here is their Canada Prime Bone-in Ribeye. It's almost on the same level as Kobe beef (from a fine dining restaurant in Japan). The only thing is that the steak can feel quite fatty when you're ¾ through...so the vinegary mushroom side definitely compliments this steak. It had given a normal octogenarian a heart attack! Luckily, I'm a bit younger! But nonetheless, Chef sent it out as seemingly ordered! This use to be one of my favorite Steakhouse in the city. However, I feel you can now get better in the city. The steaks are over priced and it's not the same quality anymore. Also, if you ask for rare you will get medium rare, if you ask for medium rare it also won't be cooked to your liking. Also for the price you pay you still need to pay extra for sides. I ordered - Ribeye with black truffle butter Lobster mashed potatoes $16 substitute side Caesar salad Pop $4.50 (yikes) Overall, a pretty okay meal. Ribeye was a decent size and cooked to my liking (thought a bit more fat on it would be nice), but I do wish the black truffle butter had more of a truffle taste. Lobster mashed potatoes were a few bites then took the rest home. The lobster was tasty but overall, the flavor just left something to be desired. I love Caesar salads in general in Canada. I heard a lot of good things about Vintage. To my surprise, it was not as wow as I have expected. Right now in YYC, they have this dine out special. Unlike Vancouver, when there is a dine out special in Vancouver it gets super pack. In Calgary, it was dead. The dine out special isn't a bad deal. For $40, you get a three course meal that included: French Onion soup, striploin and creme brulee. The portion size was huge. But I am after taste and quality and not size. The French Onion soup was more on the salty side. I felt that they added a bit too much balsamic vinegar. So the flavor was slightly off. There were not a lot of cheese in the soup. Plenty of onion and croutons. The 8oz Striploin was a bit weird. Not sure what seasoning or spices they used. It was somewhat spicy. Yes, I am not kidding. It was on the spicy side. Also at the same time the steak was salty. I asked for it to be medium rare and yes it did come out medium rare. The steak was not as tender as I hoped it would be. It wasn't tough either. I was able to bite through it. On the side it came with broccolini and potato fondant. The Broccolini had some sprinkled spice that made it spicy as well. On the bright side the potatoe fondant was not spicy. However, it didn't tasted fresh. It was hard and I felt like it was cooked and left out for a while before it was being served. Not a fan of the potatoe fondant and this is coming from someone who loves potatoes. On the side of the dish, there was the red wine demi and that was good. It had a hint of sweetness to it. It went well with the steak. Last but not least was the crème brulee. The crème brulee portion size was huge. It came with blueberries on the side and a biscotti. I am not a big fan of biscotti by itself unless it is with coffee or tea. So not sure why they put it beside the crème brulee. Not complaining. I did take a bite of it and again, it wasn't wow. The crème brulee was nothing that special. Overall food wise it is 3 stars. In terms of décor, it had that old style or 80s style steak house feel. I do like the seating. The place is big. I came on a Tuesday night and it was not packed. When I left at 6:50, there were only 3 other tables occupied in the entire restaurant. I know on Friday night they have live music. Maybe that is when they get busy. Service was good. I didn't have to hunt anyone down. I have had better steak in Alberta. I can think of one place that serves better steak than them nearby. A very interesting place! The name definitely matches the atmosphere. I liked the atmosphere, decoration and the food. I found the food a little salty, very close to what I experienced in Texas but I still liked it and I enjoyed the experience. We started with some scallops which were really good. The steak was cooked pretty good and I liked all three sides that we ordered: Roasted mushrooms, creamed spinach and honey roasted carrots. Checked out vintage last night for boo's bday and here's what we got and thought: 1) Tuna Tartare -19$ - recommended by our server and it was fresh and tasty. I don't usually like the wontons, but these were good and pretty decent sized portion as well. Would get again and would recommend. 9/10 . 2) Baked onion soup -15$- this was half the portion. Our server was lovely and got them to portion for 2 people. Tasty and would get again. Not top of my French onion soup list, but still good. 8/10 . 3) prime New York strip (10oz) - 49$ - cooked medium rare - it was cooked a little more than medium rare but delicious and buttery feeling - with choice of side - scalloped potatoes - overall tasty and good quality especially for the price -10/10 . 4)prime slow roasted prime rib -39$ - cooked medium rare, but came out more rare. Still tasty, but maybe a bit too rare for my likings. Side of Yukon whipped potato. 9/10 . Overall I would say that it was a nice evening, great service and not actually necessary to break the bank. Drinks are v pricy, but we're not always drinkers and yesterday we weren't feeling it so this whole meal was $122.00 . Next time: seared scallops looked good, pork belly or beef tartare. I might be inclined to try the lamb or do New York again. But for sides I'd get the truffle Mac & cheese or honey roasted carrots or sautéed asparagus instead! . We didn't have room for dessert and I will note I reserved and told them it was for bday and that wasn't even acknowledged... it's the little things people, why? ... would've been a 5 if they did that. Steakhouse in downtown Calgary. The staff was very friendly and I loved the ambiance and decor. The music and lighting made for a romantic evening. Our waiter was very personable and attentive. He took the time to talk to us and give us tips on places to go while we were visiting. I had the filet mignon which was spectacular. This is my third time at vintage and it never disappoints!! I had the 10oz prime rib, truffle mac and cheese and broccolini. The prime rib was cooked to perfection served with a very spicy but real horseradish. The truffle mac and cheese was very rich as expected but was incredibly good. Broccolini was ordered just to add some veggie to the meal. Service was great, our drinks were ordered and served promptly. We had the chocolate molton cake for dessert as the carrot cheesecake was sold out for the evening. It definitely didn't compare to Joeys or Cactus club's molten cake but it was still good. My girlfriend and I ordered a Canada prime ribeye and a medium rare tenderloin. The ribeye was ok, but the tenderloin was obviously overcooked. We showed the server the tenderloin, so the restaurant offered to make us another one. After waiting for around 15min, we were served a very raw steak. It was very awkward for us to ask for a third steak and we were already full at the moment. What's most disappointing was the server's attitude, she was initially very caring, but suddenly became quiet when this incident happened. We didn't want it make it awkward so just left the raw steak on the table, but the server never came to ask us about why or how's the steak even she came around a few times. Our main server was very knowledgeable and educated us on the different cuts of steak, including the best way to cook them (medium, medium rare, etc). He even brought out an entire meat board just to show us. He was also able to recommend certain dishes. The only bad thing about this place was when they got busy (towards the end of our dinner), it became really difficult to chase our server down. I hop on a flight to Calgary for a fun filled weekend of adventure, nature and a wedding. The entire weekend went without a hitch until the last day and a few hours before my flight back home. Why you may ask? Well I decided to try the Vintage Chophouse and Tavern for lunch. I mean I had to try the Alberta beef right? Wrong.... There was two of us and we both ordered the 18 oz bone in ribeye with the lobster mash as a side. I can safely say it left a lot to be desired for. The steak was chewy with so much fat that it was almost impossible to eat. The plate on which it was brought was too small for the steak. And the Lobster mash was cold. Frankly it looked like it was from last nights dinner service and was reheated. I left extremely disappointed and with $200 less in my pocket. I honestly thought about asking for a refund. For that kind of money I expected an amazing steak that I could rave about. Instead The Vintage will be something I will try to erase from my memory. Well that and getting stuck in an elevator while in Calgary only to be rescued by firefighters. However I did figure out that 911 is the same as it is in the states. :). read more

Went to Calgary to visit our daughter and her boyfriend, and treated the poor university students to a special dinner. Had never been to Vintage, but the reviews were solid, and the wine list extensive, so we made a reservation for Saturday evening. Great old steakhouse atmosphere, and a very professional waiter greeted us with a platter of raw steaks, introducing us to their various cuts, including the massive bone in ribeye and porterhouse. We started with a cocktail, i was disappointed to learn they were out of the Last Best IPA, so i settled for an old fashioned, as did our daughter's BF. She had a French 75, and my wife a Caesar, all good if a bit pricey. They decanted a bottle of Yangarra GSM while we ordered our appetizers, the beef tartare, a beer salad, a wedge salad, and some grilled scallops with pork belly. They were all excellent and ample portions. For our mains, we had a 12oz tenderloin, a 14oz ribeye, an 18oz ribeye, and an 8oz tenderloin with Oscar topping. We shared roasted mushrooms, honey baked carrots, Yukon Gold whipped potatoes, jalapeno creamed corn, and truffle mac and cheese. The steaks were all cooked exactly to order, which i find to be less common than it should be, and they were excellent. We followed with a bottle of Antinori Il Bruciato, one of my favorites, and it did not disappoint, an excellent choice with the rich cuts of meat. We were too stuffed to consider dessert, and stumbled out very much satisfied. The service was professional and attentive but not intrusive, and the food was excellent all around, no one was disappointed in anything. I think reading all the hype may have bolstered this place to such lofty expectations that I was bound to be let down by reality. While I wasn't let down, I can't give it 5 stars. Overall the food was good and the service was awesome but unfortunately, now that I've had the best steak of my life (Wallister Stube in Lake Louise), nothing else quit lives up to comparison even this tender, juicy, perfectly seared tenderloin. That said, the place is definitely worth a visit. I would stay away from the oysters as an appetizer though as it was too salty but the seared scallops? The bomb! And the tomato salad was refreshing and cleaned the palate before the steak arrived. I tried something called a Canadian Apple for a cocktail and these people are serious about their alcohol. We travel and dine out often - my husband and I both agreed that our server, Dana, was possibly the best we've ever experienced (ANYWHERE!) Professional, classy and upbeat, extremely efficient, serving several tables, all while wearing a walking boot for a broken foot! Went today for a burger. It was over cooked, burnt even, and devoid of any lusciousness. It was as dry as cardboard; no love. Horrible! And my mouth is still singing from whatever chemicals were added to it. I asked the waiter to check with the 'chef' about the fat-meat ratio, knowing that 20-80 is standard, and I suggested that they consider using 30-70 if they're going to continue to burn the burger meat, in their evident need to feel comfortable about destroying all bacteria. And this is supposed to be fresh ground beef too! He came back and told me the 'chef' didn't know! I was incredulous; that's like a barman not knowing what's in a vodka-soda! This is not the first time they've disappointed. In fact, two of the last three visits have been poor. A steak I had a year ago was anything but medium rare and completely devoid of flavour. What was once a sure thing steak house is now a hit or miss experience. So disappointing to see Vintage take a dive like they have. My wife and I tried this place tonight. And ... WOW! Let's start with ambiance. "Vintage" is a great description; great 50's and 60's music, and a very attractive, well-presented setting. Nice decor, comfortable seating, and a relaxed friendly environment (and a great server with a sense of humour). But, to the food: We started with the crab cakes, and they were amazing ... maybe the best I've ever tasted. We also ordered the scallops for a shared appetizer, and they were just okay. A tad rubbery, but very flavourful. The the mains came: My wife's short ribs were so succulent, flavourful, perfectly cooked. And my NY strip loin was better than any steak I've had in Calgary so far (and there are a LOT of good steaks to be had in Calgary!) We ordered sides like crazy--in fact, we couldn't finish them all. Bacon scalloped potatoes, mushrooms, and the absolute perfect onion rings. Nothing below fantastic. Then the cheesecake dessert: I'm trying to figure out if I've ever tasted cheesecake as good as what I had here ... and have come up blank.
